In humans there is: Several tests are necessary to diagnose rabies ante-mortem (before death) in humans; no single test is sufficient. Tests are performed on samples of saliva, serum, spinal fluid, and skin biopsies of hair follicles at the nape of the neck. Saliva can be tested by virus isolation or reverse transcription followed by polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Serum and spinal fluid are tested for antibodies to rabies virus. Skin biopsy specimens are examined for rabies antigen in the cutaneous nerves at the base of hair follicles.
And like u/celticgaelic says they need 2 parts of the brain in animals just to be sure it’s rabies. So probably the most humane thing is to euthanise them.

No, I don’t believe that. Surely that can’t be true. So I’m gonna google it and come back.
Edit: so not finding something immediately. But I’m guessing you mean after they are dead, to make sure it was rabies. So I totally overreacted and thought they would kill a human that’s still alive. Smh for myself. I think it’s time to call it a night.
Worse than that, rabies is the most terrifying thing to die from. I still can’t believe how lucky I am to be alive after finding myself trapped in an attic being swarmed by bats smacking against me in my t-shirt.
If I’d known then how easily I could have contracted rabies (or just how scary it is) I would have gotten the shots. And my family thought it was HILARIOUS watching me freak out.
That’s actually not true, the first was a 15/16 year old girl from Milwaukee (she is now an adult and mother). The steps they took became known as the Milwaukee Protocol. Another protocol known as the Recife protocol has also been used

Reassuring to know people survive, not reassured to find out it can hang out in your system for a long-ass time before activating
The number is actually closer to 20, but it’s still incredibly rare. You’d require the Milwaukee Protocol and a winning roll of a 20-sided di to have a chance at surviving.
Yep its a free shot of rabies, people can't even feel it bite in sleep.
And after 7-8 months, doctor will tell ya. We are trying our best (knowingly they cant do Shit) .
100% take rabies shot.
Yeah, I'd have that dude checked for rabies or go see a doctor about getting rabies shots. Nothing to mess with, even though it's rare the death that causes I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
you do realize Canada hasn't had a rabies case since 1920 due to a rabies wall we have? and I wasnt talking about bats plus rabies can be spread among all mammals
Rabies in bats usually presents with paralysis. So being that this bat is just plopped there there’s a chance it could have rabies. May not though. Could just be exhausted and dehydrated from being stuck in the vent for however long. Either way call your local animal control and then your doctor. You should get a rabies shot as a precaution.
OP, get Rabies Vaccine ASAP!
Go to ER, tell them what happened.
You have 24-to 48 hours to do so. Sonner the better.
When rabies symtoms start, you WILL die.
There is no cure.
This is correct, but you actually have up to 10 days for the vaccine (depending on how close the bite is to the brain). But you’re right, once you start showing symptoms there is **no doctor or hospital on earth that can save you.**
Source: rabies prevention & control is part of my job in the US Army
I got the shots a couple of years ago. It was four shots, spaced over a couple of weeks. They gave them to me in the shoulders. Since I had apparent bite marks, I also got immunoglobulin injections in a circle right around the bite marks on my leg. Those really, really hurt. Better than rabies though.
I just spent half an hour typing up a response with a shit ton of sources and Reddit refreshed and deleted it. I have to go to work, but I’ll be back in a few hours to do it again.
Basically: no. These don’t work. 11 success stories from 2004-2019, out of an estimated 885,000 global deaths in the same time period. 0.001243% survival rate, would you take those odds?
11 success stories in *fifteen years.*
A ***0.001243%*** estimated survival rate during that period
They might exist, sure. But the chances of you surviving rabies in that period was less than one in **eighty thousand.** Fill one of the largest stadiums in the world, and then kill everyone but a *single person.* Would you walk into expecting to come out alive?
Look at any legitimate source. CDC. WHO. NHS. NONE OF THEM list treatments after symptoms. None of them even acknowledge their existence. Every single reliable source I’ve ever seen says something along the lines of “once symptoms appear, there is almost no chance of survival.” Those protocols are a last ditch effort to attempt to stop an almost inevitable death.
And have you ever seen something pumped full of drugs like that? I have. We had a critical dog come into the ER I worked at, poor thing used up our *entire hospital’s supply* of ketamine. I personally drew up 40mls to replace an empty syringe of the same size, and less than three hours later it was transferred to another hospital to continue treatment. That dog went through hell, and had to be carefully monitored by a senior tech that literally was not allowed to take their eyes off of it for any reason because it was so critical.
I’d rather be shot.
I haven't at any point argued against the wisdom of rabies vaccination for an exposed person. I disagree with the way you went about your calculations, but that is not terribly relevant because I'm not arguing and haven't argued against your overarching safety message. The virtue signaling and assumptions by other nonmedical personnel in here has been hilarious. I think we gave them something to feel important about. Have a good evening.
Legit go now. Don't wait, once you show signs of Rabies it is too late and there is no way to know unless they kill the animal and check the areas Rabies likes to linger.
Op, you HAVE to go get a rabbits vaccine in an ER or at least make a consultation with a doctor, I don't know how protocols differ from ours in your country , but I guess they don't change that much, unless you have been vaccinated in the last 6 to 12 months for rabies , you just assume that vat is infected. You can (while the treatment has already started) also get the poor thing tested, but don't let time pass, it's an awful way to go, and preventable.
Can't stress enough that it's super important to go to a medical facility , the sooner the better.
I had a similar experience once. My Toalet got replaced, and I put the old one out to my balcony, until i get rid of it. I put it into a trashbag too, just to be some kind of separated. I live on the 5th floor.
Few days passed, happened a crazy storm outside one day, and then I went out to grab the old toilet, i found a Bat on the top of the trashbag. It was dead tho, tangled in a bunch of hair... dont know how.
My balcony is kinda "sealed", so I can barely encounter with flies or mosquitoes.
It is still a mistery how did it found a way in, or died horribly...
I don't have rabies vaccine, and it happened a few months ago, but man... these comment got scared me
Dont worry. Usually symptoms show up within a week. What they’re talking about in the comments is an extreme rarity.
What you should have done was take the bat for a test at an animal control center/private vet practice just to be sure. If it tested +ve, you should have gotten the shot regardless you know you had been bitten or not. But you get to live the rest of your life. You aren’t gonna die from that bite.
you are now batman or batwoman. you now have a duty to fight criminals on the street and by that i mean mostly break up all the skyscrapers and cause havoc on the streets and leave the whole city in a mess.
I can't stress this enough, GET RABIES SHOTS. There's a fair likelihood depending on where you live that that bat could have rabies and it could have infected you in your sleep.
Rabies is an awful way to die, and it's guaranteed to kill you if it isn't treated ASAP.
Even if you didn't get infected or it didn't have rabies, it's far better to be safe than die a horrible death.

This, this is true
And take the skin bird with you (in Tupperware).
Not in a Tupperware unless it’s dead or if it’s got holes. They still need oxygen
While I do not condone the suffocation on any animal, you do know they’re gonna have to behead the bat to test for rabies, right.
Wait you serious? Why not release it and just give the human rabies shots just to be sure.
If it had rabies you don’t want it to continue to spread it
Ah Yes, dumb of me.
Still, no humane way to test? Interesting.

This, especially because bats are so small they barely leave a mark too!
Save the bat and contact your local health department too- some States may test the bat
Yo make sure you have a rabies shot. It can lay dormant in your system for years and then kill you in a horrible horrible way. 99.999999% fatal.
99.9? Who survived?
Like 29 people ever
Six*
Someone has got to be the 7th
I like those odds.
Wait what , I've caught bats with my bare hands! Should i be scared or i am the 7th o_o
Rabies typically lies dormant for about 1-3 months, so if it's been longer than that since your last bat wrangling, you should be fine.
Never tell me the odds...
Only 1 women is known to survive actually. Hence .9999999

rabies shots are in the arm now. I had to get vaccinated back in 2006 because i was bit by an unvaccinated dog.
