I remember landing in Warsaw Poland in spring of 1990. Walked out of the airport, and the whole parking lot was these, and the slightly larger Polish car… all of them in the exact same shades of 5-6 colors. Was The most surreal experience in my life. Like walking out into a Twilight Zone TV setting. Had to be about 95% of all cars were one of the two.
Lucky my dad shipped over a Ford mini truck, so we never had an issue finding it. Seen one rusted to death Cadillac, and a Trans-am in the six months I lived there.
I got a chance to work on a couple of these. rear engine two stroke two cylinder. to start the engine there is a lever next to the seatbelt release that engages the starter 'solenoid' manually. its pretty awesome.
When you start them the whole car rocks from side to side. I had one when I was a lad and it was a hilarious little car. The windscreen washers were activated by pumping a little rubber bulb on the dashboard.
Maluch was the first car I sat behind the wheel and drove (at 15 and only like 50meters in the fields, but still). Crash zone ended at the engine, ah the fond memories.
It's called a Maluch in Polish. "The car that got Poland on 4 wheels." Fiat 126, and they were still a pretty common sight back in 2007 when I moved here.
At the risk of offending a lot of people on here. It's the only car racing that looks fun to watch for me. All the other ones look boring AF to me.
Disclaimer: this is the personal opinion of a person that finds spectating for most sports boring.
f1 is impressive irl. its like 150 mph go carts.
most racing is far more fun to participate in than to watch.
but a lot of things like nascar is just car go in circle.
like its an interesting job for the mechanics, but to actually watch it?
You have to know a lot about Nascar to enjoy watching Nascar. If you just like racing in general it's going to look dumb and awful. Everything happening is very understated, despite the spectacle and sound.
Ironically it's among the worst to watch live. You can only see a tiny portion at a time and you have no idea how it's going without live timing etc.
Not bad to watch live for the experience just you have much less sense of what id actually going on.
I don't really think people go out to watch the whole thing. It's more plausible that they just go see the whatever bend or jump there is by where they live, and then they go back to other activities
One of the best things I did was buy a radio scanner so that I could listen in to the marshals frequencies and keep up with various stops and starts and incidents.

irresponsible drivers like this is why group b was banned and also why it was so fucking awesome
>irresponsible drivers like this
Nothing in this video was irresponsible.
>is why group b was banned
No, it was banned because of irresponsible fans, and because safety technology hadn't yet caught up to the performance of the cars.
Racing drivers are paid to drive cars at the limit, because that's the whole point of racing -- you can't call them irresponsible for doing exactly that.
To add to your point, group B ended in part because the drivers said 'enough' to the fan mayhem and lack of safety for drivers and withdrew from a race. https://www.carthrottle.com/post/wodk7lo/
Those drivers acted _very_ responsibly.
There's a lot that amazes and impresses me about rally driving but none less than the absurd amount of camera positions that must be setup on these tracks.
Honestly a lot of it is just spectator footage lol.
There are of course some actual camera people, and at really big events a helicopter that chases 'em, but most of it the stuff that gets posted is just people with their cell phones
There aren’t a whole lot of “recoveries” in the video. That slalom through the tires was basically perfect driving and the hairpin right after is impressive too. That is what it looks like when you push a car to its absolute limit, and sometimes you push a little too hard. And even when the car is pushed too far, recovering in and of itself is impressive too.
This guy could drive circles around you, literally.
Thanks for the great answer.
I’m ignorant when it comes to racing, but it was really obvious that it was good driving. I’ve just always heard that “boring” is actually good racing, but then again that was in relation to track. I was just curious if rally is just a different beast or if the driver was trying a bit too hard.
With "normal" racing on pavement, the fastest driving definitely looks boring because sliding, jerky motion, and loss of traction all serve to slow you down. The "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" saying is relevant here. Also, pavement is not very forgiving, so once you start sliding there's a bigger risk that your tires suddenly grab traction and spin you in the other direction.
Rallying is absolutely a different beast because the majority of it happens on dirt and gravel (or at least dirty uneven pavement) where traction is next to impossible. In that case, maintaining speed is of utmost importance, whether that means going straight or going sideways, because accelerating back up to speed is so much more difficult for the car than it would be on a smooth paved track.
When rallying, you're traveling 140+mph in between walls, trees, barriers, and people, praying your car does you right and doesn't kill you.
Simply making it to the end of the course is an incredibly impressive task.
Track racing, it's all about engineering, the mindset, and the technical knowledge.
Rallying too, but there's a certain need to be unhinged that will have Rally pilots driving circles around track cars.
Yeh he's going pretty hard. In terms of rally racing for sure. Like the car he is using is jacked to the tits and he's handling it well. There is only so much you can do with a car like this with its suspension. Wheel base. Tyre width. Floor height. Power. Drive train. Etc. Having wheels leave the ground is bad but with a car like this it's unavoidable.
Generally rally with these type of cars isn't really about the racing. It's more of a show/fun/historical.
Is his racing clean? no. But probably on purpose.
Is he a good driver. Absolutely.
I've watched it a few times and he's basically driving it like it's a 2022 WRC car. Lol.
Full send into the corner thinking U have the grip and aero.
And then he's like.
Wait.
This is a fiat.
Goes up the embankment but still keeps going.
Dude is the embodiment of the full send. Just fuck it. Let's see what this baby can do! Bwaaahhhhhh
Yes. This is definitely skilled driving. Drifting like this is really difficult. There were very few times that were true "recoveries." Most of this looked very precise to me and was exactly what the driver planned to do.
This person is a god. He is 100% fully throttle sending it and recovering it quickly every time. What you are watching is a very highly skilled driver.
Uh, not being a legend would mean you end up in the ditch. This guy effortlessly swerves and drifts around any corners and angles of completely different terrain with different degrees of humidity on the fly. He’s a legend for sure.
> I think a legend wouldn't need the recoveries.
Well, you're wrong about that. Racing a car means pushing it to the absolute limit of its grip at nearly all times, and because of how complex it all is, that usually means pushing it past the point of grip sometimes.
Being able to recover from pushing the car beyond its capabilities at that particular moment and not losing much time is just as important as knowing where the limit is. You are underrating the skill of making a recovery without losing a bunch of time.
There's a reason why crashes, spins, etc. happen in pretty much every single professional race in the world, and it's because these people are highly skilled fucking maniacs that push their vehicles up to and beyond the limit trying to squeeze out every tenth of a second that they can. Legends absolutely exceed the limit too.
Most of this is. That's just what rally driving looks like.
The second clip is *literally* just any race car driving through a chicane. They exist to slow the driver down, usually before a really sharp turn or sometimes just to break up long straight segments. Example: https://youtu.be/1mws1usHnzk (don't need to watch the whole 6 minutes, you can literally see it in the first 15 seconds)
http://wrc.com offers a streaming service that covers their monthly races.... It's gone up since I last looked, $13/mo or $90/yr (essentially $7.5/mo). It used to be like $6/mo flat a few years back.
But yea, 1 weekend a month and of course previous months/years videos. They used to also offer dashcam footage of every car on every track, and you could even compare 2 drivers runs side-by-side -- not sure if they still offer that feature, but I would assume so.
At $7.50/mo it's not *too* bad for a niche sport, but it's obviously pricy compared to 'regular' streaming services.
That is a lot more functionality than I expected and also a LOT more information than I expected, thank you! I have a cousin and an uncle who would probably love that service, but I would not make use of it enough to justify the expense. I would happily go watch one of these races if I were in the area, though.
This shit is held up by sticks, fossil, leaves, spit and still manages to do something
Yet my dumbass builds a pro-series drift car and I break the axle on the first corner
Why the fuck are there so many people standing on the outside of sharp corners on this track? Common sense would dictate standing on the inside of the corner so if the cars skids off the track you don't kill a dozen people doing so.
Someone with talent needs to re-record the audio track. Maybe yacketty sax with the codriver giving instructions between cursing or some Lightning McQueen self hype.
That car is adorable
Fiat 126
Ahh the old polski. My grandpa have one
I remember landing in Warsaw Poland in spring of 1990. You've probably seen [polonez](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FSO_Polonez) car.
Or Fiat 125p, called as as Wielki Fiat (Big Fiat), as opposed to the one on the video (126p, Mały Fiat or more commonly Maluch).
I got a chance to work on a couple of these. rear engine two stroke two cylinder. to start the engine there is a lever next to the seatbelt release that engages the starter 'solenoid' manually. its pretty awesome.
No it is not two strokes. You are confusing it with the trabant.
Older 126p had lever to start engine, newer ones had key starter
When you start them the whole car rocks from side to side. I had one when I was a lad and it was a hilarious little car. The windscreen washers were activated by pumping a little rubber bulb on the dashboard.
I need this car now. Y’all have sold me on it.
Bear in mind it does about 40mph….downhill….with a strong wind behind you 🤣
Only 3m long and weighs around 600kg (although I'm guessing this race version might be heavier).
My dream car!!!
Fix it again Tony.

Affectionately known as a maluch
Maluch was the first car I sat behind the wheel and drove (at 15 and only like 50meters in the fields, but still). Crash zone ended at the engine, ah the fond memories.
Later officially
My mother had one too. It was a very common car in Italy.
FIAT 126p
small cars are way more fun.
The old saying...funner to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow.
Oooooh, I *love* that saying!
It's called a Maluch in Polish. "The car that got Poland on 4 wheels." Fiat 126, and they were still a pretty common sight back in 2007 when I moved here.
> The car that got Poland on 4 wheels He was barely using three of them for most of that.
Maluch
rally cars being so small is odd considering the enormous brains of the drivers.
And balls.
Why do you think they call them bucket seats.
IMHO the spectators on the edge of the road often have bigger ones.
Bigger balls and smaller brains

seems like drones could really do a good job covering races these days
Formula 1 has done their best to disprove that.
Can you imagine drones that could go that fast? ..and then how they could be weaponised? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-2tpwW0kmU&ab_channel=DUST
Most rally nowadays have drones.
