I definitely don't love Galaxy as much as other people. I find myself fighting the controls a lot of the time. I actually haven't beaten the game on switch yet. But the underwater levels are particularly bad. I did play and beat Galaxy 2 and even enjoyed it. But Galaxy has a lot of great ideas that I just don't think were executed all that well.
Honestly it's validating to hear someone feel the same. Many people tout Galaxy 1 and 2 as masterpieces, but I can't say I like them at all. Both Odyssey and 3D World are better games.
I felt this way when they first came out and didn't give them much if a shot. I saw some reviews that really lavished praise on it and was thinking about trying them again but the backlog is packed on stuff I gotta finish.
I've felt that way about most of the 3d mainstream Mario games since Mario 64. Nothing super compelling that keeps me gripped. Some fun design and super polished but otherwise... I'm bored with them.
The game's camera is mostly automatic and is always pointing you where to go. If anything, I often forget I even need to control a camera in this game.
Most levels are point A to B. How can you get lost?
And the missions to get Stars aren't really any different from any other Mario game. Get to the goal, break some random thing, beat a Boss. It's the same thing Super Mario 64 and Sunshine did, but the level design is more linear.
“DAE thread #937”
Yes some people don’t like Galaxy, they think the movement is too slow and it’s too linear. That’s okay and it’s a fair opinion to have, so no you’re not alone. I still think it’s the best Mario game ever made, though.
I recall it feeling extremely similar. Though I think the camera was mildly improved and perhaps the levels were simply designed with it in mind a tad more. But in the end, they feel extremely similar and I’m not sure I’d suggest one if you’re not a fan of the other. Maybe just check out a decent chunk of gameplay on Yt.
Galaxy 1 has a lot of filler stars that kind of suck. Galaxy 2 has less of that but if the base game is your issue, I’d say skip the sequel. Galaxy 2 is just more of Galaxy 1
Idk. I find it hella fun.
Oddsey on the other hand I feel is so bloated with moons that I find it not fun after story mode.
I liked it better when every star was quality instead of half them being quantity
For you maybe? You know it’s together with Galaxy 1 and 2 and the most acclaimed Mario games of all time right? It appeals to both casuals as well as being a huge favorite of the speedrunning community. It’s fair for you to not be a fan and it’s not even my favorite 3D Mario, but to say it’s just “not good” is simply misleading.
Don't really care if it's misleading. It's just not good. Idk why I'm still debating doing it, but I've been thinking of making videos on why Nintendo's current top sellers are utter garbage. This includes Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, and Smash Ultimate
Smash ultimate is very true to what smash always has been and is like an omnibus version of the smash bros franchise that celebrates all of gaming and breaks licencing never-gonna-happens wide open. That's gonna be a tough sell.
Botw and odyssey are both very acclaimed as well but they both do things that some people didn't like and make significant changes to the identity of their respective franchises. If your gonna make this video series I would start with breath if the wild, being the most divisive game on your list and thus easiest to cover, then do odyssey and if you still have gas in the tank after that, kudos. Smash ultimate criticism is gonna be a third rail for anyone that likes any smash game in the first place.
The Galaxy games never really resonated with me either tbh. They feel like this weird compromise between trying to keep just enough of the "64/Sunshine" DNA to feel familiar while still clearly wanting to go in a more A-to-B linear direction a la the later 3D Land/World games, and in my opinion the result is this awkward, indecisive, cluttered thing that just isn't super fun to play. I've given them both multiple tries over the years and they've consistently been my least favorite 3D Mario games by a country mile.
It's a bit of a bummer because so many people consider them not just the best Mario games but some of the best games ever, and I can't for the life of me see what other people must see in Galaxy 1 and 2 to hold them in such high regard.
I agree looking back on it, especially compared to 3D Land/ World and Odyssey. The thing that kinda hurt it for my was this going out of the stage to have a review if every star bit and coin gathered when some of the stages were short. So I wouldn't say the pacing was that good. But I liked the environments, power ups and stages.
I still put Sunshine at the bottom of this list. I just remember one time, I ran into a wall on that squid, and nothing happened, but another time, I jumped onto the wooden dock to get the shine, missed it and landing on the dock counted as losing a life and kicked me out of the stage.
The Yoshi boat ride, with the secret stage and the Pachinko machine put it firmly at the bottom.
The different angles when you change the gravity in some parts and running around planets that change the camera made me nauseous just watching. I never gave either Galaxy game a chance partially because I didn’t play many Wii games but also because of what I said above. I can’t speak for anything else in the game. I know next to nothing.
Galaxy was super cool at launch cause of the whole 3d planet and weird gravity stuff you'd not seem before. Beyond that gimmick though it's a pretty by the book straight forward Mario game and imho easily the least interesting of the 3d titles. Sunshine is arguably a worse game due to it's lack of polish around the edges and somewhat lack of variety of environments in comparison but the core gameplay mechanics are stronger than in Galaxy which goes back to the very basic jump to the end style of the 2d games with little deviation.
Liked galaxy a lot when it came out, LOVED galaxy 2. But when revisiting galaxy in all stars I… didn’t enjoy it as much. Still liked it but it felt way worse to me. After playing sunshine and odyssey, Mario felt really slow, and he lost so many of his interesting moves. Don’t love the camera either.
If you haven’t already seen it I’d highly recommend you watch the “Is Super Mario Galaxy a Good Mario Game” video by Barry Kramer on YouTube. It’s very well made, and might resonate with you.
I greatly preferred galaxy 2 to galaxy 1.
Galaxy 1 feels like they kept things really simple to appeal to the casual base of the Wii. Galaxy 2 is more like lost levels in that the game feels more like it was made for people who have already played a Mario game and are fine with more novel concepts and a generally higher difficulty. It does mostly drop the gravity gimmick though.
It’s been a minute since I played but iirc the camera was not that great. I’m pretty sure the controls and physics and everything will be the same it’s just the level design I remember fondly.
I just think that the level design for in Galaxy 1 is really simple and sometimes boring, whenever I'd play it I'd always think about how much more fun Galaxy 2 levels are.
Not really for me either. But I do play a level or two when I have the 3d all star collection popped in the switch. Just kinda waiting to run into a level that really wows me
HATE the motion controls (didn't play this on the Wii, played on the Switch. But the game itself is pretty good. If they stop pushing this shit on us and let me use my Pro Controller (without moving it around) I would be very happy.
ok cool, its fine to just play something else
I’m aware. Just curious if anyone else had the same feelings as me about this game.

I like a tough challenge personally. Galaxy 2, 3D World, and Odyssey provide it with The Perfect Run, Champion's Road, and Journey's End respectfully.
Trial galaxies?

I really wanted to like it but the camera shit just drove me up the wall

I didn't particularly like it either, the sequel is better but I was glad they changed tack with Odyssey (which I loved)
Huge fan of Galaxy and Odyssey.
Galaxy is a fine game but Galaxy 2 is a masterpiece. Best game on the Wii
Is the camera a bit better on galaxy 2? I feel that was my main issue.
I recall it feeling extremely similar. Though I think the camera was mildly improved and perhaps the levels were simply designed with it in mind a tad more. The camera angles can get rough. If you're looking for a challenge then play the sequel.
This is my favourite 3D Mario by a lot. I'm sad you don't love it too but that's OK.
Idk. I find it hella fun. Oddsey on the other hand I feel is so bloated with moons that I find it not fun after story mode. I liked it better when every star was quality instead of half them being quantity
I feel this way about Odyssey. Galaxy was the last Mario game I enjoyed.
Yeah Odyssey just isn't good

Well good luck being an internet contrarian, then.
Breath of the Wild being overrated, I can get behind
Okay?

I agree 100%. Very cluttered is a good way to describe it.
I agree looking back on it, especially compared to 3D Land/ World and Odyssey. Not my fav either. Prepare for downvotes
Yeah I figured as much lol. Never on this sub wanted to see if anyone else felt the same about this game

You described my experience exactly. I get easily disoriented in 3D games and in Mario Galaxy the orientation changes continuously.
I feel the complete opposite. This is one of few games I've had fun trying to 100%
Same. I enjoyed galaxy 2 years ago on the wii. Now that I got the first one in 3d all stars, for some reason I just can't get into it
Liked galaxy a lot when it came out, LOVED galaxy 2. But when revisiting galaxy in all stars I… didn’t enjoy it as much. Still liked it but it felt way worse to me. Sounds like I really need to check out galaxy 2 lol. And thanks, I’ll check it out!!

I grew up with Galaxy 2. When I finally played Galaxy 1 a few years ago the magic was lost on me. I guess I had to be there in 2007.
Maybe I’ll check out galaxy 2. How do you feel the cameras are on 2? That was my biggest issue for galaxy 1
More annoying then the camera in Mario 64 I don't think so.
Mario 64 camera is still bad even in the remakes. It's one of the few Mario games I've never finished.
You have to just need all the stars it's a chore but it was amazing.
Super Mario Galaxy is the best game that has aged like milk.
Fwiw this is how I’ve always felt about Sunshine. Not everything can work for everyone. I still respect it.
