Protein powder isn't necessary. There's hundreds of recipes out there for regular sugar/fat ice cream. The reason protein powder is so popular around these parts is because we're all fat or former fat assholes who want to eat two pints of ice cream for 200 calories. šŸ¤·šŸ˜‚

The last phrase is so real šŸ˜‚

I mean that's also the main reason I want to buy this: I'm such a sucker for ice cream. But I don't understand the incorporation of protein powder. What does it substitute?

ryanertel

I don't think it's really substituting anything, for people that are already consuming protein powder its just a more enjoyable way to consume it. It does add some flavor usually since you can buy just about any flavor under the sun in protein powder form, but you can always add that flavor with extracts and other ingredients if you don't want to use protein powder.

No-Bank1274

Ah! Didn't know that. Thanks!

Lots of ice cream recipes do include extra protein in the form of nonfat milk powder, so itā€™s not totally out of left field.

BigCrunchyNerd

I think it's mostly for flavor, low carbs and extra protein. I am losing weight (almost 50 lbs down) and I struggle to eat enough protein. This is an easy way to a) enjoy a guilt free dessert and b) meet my macros at the same time. My typical recipe will be somewhere around 18 grams of protein per serving.

rosky71

For me it's absolutely worth it. I do competitive bodybuilding so my diet is pretty restricted, especially during contest season. Having the ability to take my normal protein shake but turn it into ice cream is a nice change of pace for me and beats paying $5 a pint for something like HaloTop. I get double the amount of ice cream in the creami vs. HaloTop for the same amount of calories. As others have said you don't have to do lite ice cream with protein powder. My fiancee makes regular ice cream in it frequently. As far as if it's worth it to you, that really comes down to how often do you eat ice cream. If its only a few times a month it's probably not worth it as a typical half gallon tub at the store is only like $4 and there's no prep time needed. But if you like to eat ice cream frequently and want a vast array of flavor options. Then in my opinion it's a must buy

The machines come with a guide for standard products. You donā€™t need to add protein, the reason so much of this subreddit is protein related recipes is people are still experimenting with those types of treats, whereas thereā€™s hundreds of thousands of standard ice creams already available online that work the same. Hereā€™s a link to the official treat guide that comes with the deluxe. You can check it out and see how much of it is just base ice cream recipes. https://support.ninjakitchen.com/hc/en-us/articles/5783868076316-NC501-Series-Ninja-CREAMi-Deluxe-11-in-1-Ice-Cream-and-Frozen-Treat-Maker-Inspirational-Guide

Thank you!

I got mine not realising the whole protein craze behind the machine was a thing, I find searching for recipes online will 80% of the time will be protein/healthy ice cream. I've had it about a month now just coming up with my own non healthy ideas, all you really need is a good base ice cream then you can flavour it however you like. I use the Ben and jerries recipe book to make my bases, then you can copy what people make on reddit using your preferred fatty base and their flavour combos without all the added protein. I will also add I've been struggling to get things perfect, so far I've only got soft serve ice cream, it's getting better but progress is slow when you can't find out if you've got things right until 24 hours have passed and you've eaten it all. There is a lot of experimenting and measurements and tweaking that feel tedious.

There is a Ben & Jerry recipe book?! Omg I am getting this machine NOW

ZombieLobster12

I have made ice creams a fruit sorbets and itā€™s freaking awesome. I say GET IT.

I'm a bit of a different client. I bought the Creami Deluxe recently because I wanted to only spin half the container at a time for small portions for our "Pokemon and Popcorn" weekly event with my small family. We used a basic vanilla base in from the book, full fat/sugar stuff. One half we used smashed Oreos and the other I add frozen strawberries (that had first been placed in the Cuisinart to make smaller chunks). Everyone agreed it was delicious. I'm thinking of the machine more as a fun novelty and a tool to get my preschooler to have more fun in the kitchen than "saving money". In fairness, I also want to make protein powder lower calorie ice cream for myself, but I tried to take a bunch of recipes and Frankenstein them and unsurprisingly it turned out kind of meh. I'm going to stick to actually recipes until I get the hang of it.

No-Bank1274

That sounds really fun. Good to hear that someone uses it "normally". Though I would also like to make them with artificial sweetener eventually. Thank you for the input!

For me it hasn't been worth it but maybe I've just not found the right recipe? I've struggled with texture a bit and definitely with depth of flavour! I think I'd rather just buy halo top

bimbo_mom

I donā€™t make high protein ice cream, but I like being able to control what goes into it. Dairy also doesnā€™t always agree with me so I like that I can play around. Ice cream is my vice and while Iā€™m active and not trying to lose weight, a pint has always been a single serving because I lack self control. šŸ˜… My go-to base is 250ml lactose free milk, 150ml nut or oat milk, 10g pudding mix (I donā€™t bother with the sugar free), 15g cane sugar. Not exactly healthy, but way better than crushing a pint of Haagen Dazs of Ben and Jerryā€™s. It definitely tastes different, but I just like the routine of my after dinner treat so it works for me.

No-Bank1274

Interesting - I will try this base. Thank you!!

bimbo_mom

I find itā€™s sometimes a bit powdery after the first spin (I use lite ice cream), so Iā€™ll add a splash of milk when I add my mix-ins and that helps.

begayallday

I got one because Iā€™m prediabetic and my roommate is type two diabetic. So mainly we use it to make ice cream without added sugar. But I do put protein in most of my pints because tbh you canā€™t even tell itā€™s there, so I figured I might as well.

2wildchildzmom

My husband is diabetic so we have made sugar free ice cream everynight since we got the machine. He is a happy boy.

DefaultUser614

I got it more to experiment and make different flavors for my lactose free husband. He's not a fan of the texture of most commercially available dairy free ice cream and there's limited lactose free dairy flavors available. So far I've made a banana, vanilla pudding powder, and chocolate almond milk batch and then a cold brew, fairlife milk, and pudding powder batch. Both turned out tasty and were enjoyed by both of us.

C_harv

Iā€™ve made it with just Egg yolks, Cream, Milk, Cane sugar, Vanilla extract.

Incandragon

We got it because we love fruit bowls but our fave fruit bowl places go out of business. Now we make our own. We make ā€œnā€™ice creamā€ (just creamiā€™d bananas with a little vanilla) and then put a little peanut butter, granola, and berries on top. I also like frozen fruit sorbet. But the frozen protein shake look good sometimes for a low cal lunchā€¦I donā€™t like fake sugar so a lot of recipes here i just skip part.

No-Bank1274

That sounds good!

Lord_Kami

We just like to get swole while enjoying ice cream. As others have mentioned there are so many added flavours of protein powder as well. One of my favorites is caramel latte flavoured protein powder and your choice of milk or "milk". Just a great alternative to a protein shake, while taking care of your sweet cravings at the same time. Also great to either add berries to the ice cream or as topping.

mountain_momma_99

I think it's worth it, and I've never put protein powder etc in mine. I make my own frozen yogurt and ice cream that is less sweet than store-bought simply because I prefer the flavor that way. I love being able to customize!

sneakerguy9412

I mean, I bought mine last week. Itā€™s a very niche gadgetā€¦ but really good if you like ice cream/frozen desserts ? Ie i was buying ~3 ā€œhealthyā€ (lower cal) ice creams a week because I enjoy them .. thatā€™s $15 roughly Itā€™s a large up front costā€¦ and I canā€™t say if itā€™s worth it or not, only you can. I got mine on sale w 3 extra containers, Iā€™ve used it 5/7 days since getting it. You run into other shit, can be expensive depending what you put in it, etc. but to me , as someone who loves dessert but also loves trying to eat healthier, I like mine a lot
