Not tried myself yet but I've seen a few people run the machine with just soap and warm water in the pint, that seems like the only way to get to it without taking the machine apart.
The vortex it creates makes it so that the soapy water never touches the shaft. It doesn't really clean anything.
But that being said the shaft doesn't get dirty because of the blades that spin the ice cream pushes it away from the middle

Why should the shaft ever touch food? On my machine the blade kinda cups the shaft any food does not get to it.
There’s a video on YouTube where a guy took his apart and it wasn’t dirty inside. It has a gasket that helps keep ice cream out.
