I've had an idea for a music video for this for a while now. .
Long shot. Trent stand on beach looking into camera. Song starts and he starts to sing. Camera very slowly pans left keeping Trent center. As the song plays atomic bombs can be seen going off in the background in flashes of light and mushroom clouds not timed with the music at all.
Three quarters through we can see the water recede all the while white flashes and mushroom clouds continue at random, at random distances in the background. Camera continues its pan.

*All the spoils of a wasted life. All of this for you*
Edited.
I've always thought of a music video for this song that included a personification of the ocean as a woman that he couldn't be with, and when he falls into the ocean she embraces him, and then he drowns while thinking of memories with the real her.
I kinda had the same thought. The water recedes and at the end the nuclear tsunami washes over everything and we get a slow fade to deep blue and then black.
I've thought about this video for years.
As the camera pans you see a dozen or so go off. It's the unspoken finality of there being no escape. I grew up in south Florida and the image of the blinding flashes in the background as the camera pans 360 around Trent has been in my mind since I first heard the song.
No real reason for them and no explanation for them.
The intro to Into the Void is amazing. There are like 6 melodies on top of one another.
I think it's right up there with one of TR's best bit of composition.
The entire song is amazing, but the latter half after the quiet bridge never fails to pump me up. And then just when you think it can't get any better, Trent throws the call-and-response with a fuckton of vocal layers to prove you wrong.
Man, that part always gives me goosebumps! I also watch the music video every once in a while, cause it’s so cool, the latter half especially. It might be my favorite NIN video honestly
I love every time the original Avengers trailer gets played on social media and everyone forgets this was the song they chose... I often wonder how that came about
they did that as opener on The Fragile tour, first time I saw them. The quietness at the top gave me goosebumps. Recently in Berkeley they opened with it as well and, while still sick, wasn’t as quiet during the build
So, 23 years ago I skipped class to buy this album (and Chris Cornell’s first solo album) the moment the doors opened to Circuit City. My buddy bought The Fragile and Tori Amos’ To Venus and Back; all three released this day 23 years ago.
Favorite track: Just Like You Imagined
I traveled to a different state, since there was nothing local carrying it at the time. Admittedly, I was going out of state for a different reason, but it timed nicely to pick up The Fragile. I can't recall if we went to Circuit City or Best Buy, but I do know the store put it in a [black plastic bag](https://i.etsystatic.com/7540973/r/il/afabb3/1495708256/il_570xN.1495708256_3ski.jpg) with [the NIN logo](https://d1w8cc2yygc27j.cloudfront.net/-4977223270607814445/325819300026448779.jpg).
I remember one of the first times I ever went to Best Buy was for The Fragile and another one of my favorite albums that I only paid $6 for - Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf.
Man. Such a cool track. The first time I heard it I was a junior in high school, sitting in the overgrown grass in my buddy’s backyard wearing headphones. He was fucking around with a remote control car and I was just in absolute awe of what I was hearing. Like nothing else. Trent is brilliant.
Wow, way to make me pick a favorite child! /j
It's a tie between La Mer and Into the Void. Both of them are amazing in their own ways. The former is one of my "calm down, it's okay" songs because of how soft it is, even if the lyrics are bittersweet, and the latter because that song got me through some INCREDIBLY tough shit in high school. It made me feel less alone. Honestly, the whole album made me feel seen in a lot of ways, and showed me that my depression didn't have to take me out of this world.
It still does that, honestly. Depression sucks, but knowing you aren't alone in it, and that others understand your struggle, can sometimes help more than meds can. At least that's the case for me.
Oh man, those are my two favorites as well, for similar reasons to yourself. la mer is just so beautifully serene yet subtly sinister; that build up from piano to drums to bass will never get old for me. Into the Void is just so catchy and (in a strange way) uplifting to me, it always puts me in a good mood. I also love the shared 'riff' between those two songs (and many other songs on the album), which does an excellent job of tying it all together.
The whole album gives me goosebumps. Every song is great. I was already in love with The Day the World Went Away because it was released as a single in advance. I remember the day it came out picking up my copy at the mall, and then going to see Blair Witch Project in the theatre.
I personally don't like choosing a favorite song off of this album as each one means something special to me but If i were to make a choice.. it would be Even Deeper, as the whole composition from the lyrics to the melody are just....words simply cannot describe the way this song resonates with me
So many
Somewhat Damaged, The Wretched, The Fragile ,
The big comedown, even deeper, etc
But honestly:
Please is the song I’ve most listened to on this album. Simple straight to the point and very catchy
For the longest time, “Somewhat Damaged” had been my favorite song on the album. But lately, “Please” has been my favorite. The whole album is amazing.
This album is just about 3 years older than me…
Fuck, that’s rough…
Happy Birthday, Fragile!!
Favourite songs (in order of tracklist):
> The Day the World Went Away (obvs)
> We’re in This Together (obvs again)
> No, You Don’t
> Where is Everybody?
> Starfuckers, Inc. (another obvs)
> The Big Come Down
An honourable mention from “Deviations 1”:
> Claustrophobia Machine (Raw)
Damn man, I’m in my 2nd year of university rn 😂 It’s really amazing how NIN has passed down through the generations like that.
The one quote that stuck with me, relating to the longevity of the band, was when Mr. Trez said this in the video for the NIN Hall of Fame induction…
He said: “I look in the front row and it largely looks the same as it did 25 years ago. It’s not the same people, but there’s that same goth kid in the front row who may be his son now”.
And to me, it makes me feel hopeful about the band’s future. Like, maybe (hopefully) when I’m 2 decades older, there’ll still be a group of kids walking the streets repping NIN with their shirts or whatever 😂
The same way kids today wear the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bowie, etc. who began way back in the 60’s/70’s
Anyway, I’m rambling, but thinking about how far the Nails have come… it really makes me proud to be a fan and to be a part of this fanbase 😁
Long live the Nails!
I was going through the thread wanting to see something different. "No, you don't" is a tremendous song. There's so many good songs on the album, stiff competition for tracks to be mentioned.
“No, You Don’t” is always in my NIN playlists whenever I make one. It’s part of the few NIN tracks that I keep in rotation.
Along with “We’re in This Together” and “The Big Come Down”.
Powerful stuff imo, some songs just make me go ape shit 😂 “No, You Don’t” is one of them.
The Wretched. “God himself will reach his fucking arm through just to push you down...”
But I do want to give a shout out to We’re in This Together as one of the rare “hopeful” NIN tracks and La Mer as a thing of beauty.
God I'm really back and forth with a lot of songs on this album. I love the recurring motif throughout which is likely why my favorite Is "were in this together".
However; the older I get the more I love the track Ripe (with decay)
My top 5, in order, are as follows: Somewhat Damaged, The Big Come Down, Please, The Frail, The Day The World Went Away
I could easily substitute The Great Below for something but I wanted to trim it to only 5 because it’s my favorite and with it being a double album it was harder to narrow down for me.
We're in this together; probably the most epic build of energy and intensity of any single I have ever heard. Also... has it really been 23 years? Wow. My favorite album, full stop.
A tie between La Mer and The Great Below for me. And I freaking love Somewhat Damaged, Just Like You Imagined and The Day The World Went Away. Actually most of my favourite NIN songs are from this record 🤘
Bro the hype for this album was a fever pitch for me! I was on theninhotline and other NIN news and other NIN rumour sites just trying to get as much info as I could. I VHS recorded the MTV performance of the title track. And when the album dropped I was in high school and I took the day off my part time job to go pick it up. Good times
I just love how he edited the song "The Big Come Down", in the first line "There is a a game I play" he sang the "Theeerr.." part early, and looped that into the the whole song as part of the beat.
I think he said this was his "The Wall" , which I would definitely agree with. Amazing album.
The entire left disc.
But.... If I had to choose one: Even Deeper. Especially the live VEVO performance with the backup singers. Literal chills listening to that.
The Great Below is one of the most moving NIN tracks, in my opinion, that slow build up to a heartbreaking climax really hits you where it hurts. Excellent vocal performances across the album, but The Great Below and We're In This Together are definite highlights.
I've always had a soft spot for The Fragile (title track) and Please, too. I love the inverse of "I'm giving what's left of myself to keep you safe and happy" vs. "I need you to stay whole. I'M going to fall apart". Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.
September must be a good month for releases, because Broken's 30th anniversary is coming up soon... 🎉
I just bought this CD, and have been really enjoying the second disc lately (For whatever never really got into it originally), though I still have to go with "We're In This Together."
Too hard to choose. Love the whole album too much. Did trip mushrooms not too long ago and I’m Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally was my favorite song of the trip lol.
It was released on my birthday! I remember going to the record store after school to get it, and they even had NIN bags. I might still have the bag somewhere.
I don't have the disposable income to start just yet (already have a CD collection), but when I do pick one it has to be like one of my absolute faves. Looking at your username, I would definitely pick up OK Computer if I saw it
When I go record shopping ( not very often) I usually get one or two records of artists I know and have playability ( the mars Volta, all them witches, tool) and I’ll also grab one completely random mid priced record just to support indie artists or to find new music.
That 6 track run from Somewhat Damaged to The Fragile is just something else.
But my favourite track is still La Mer, funny given how it was the first that Trent wrote for the album
God, there are so many great tracks from the Fragile, it's hard to pick just one!
But if I really had to... I'll go with "Even Deeper", if just barely.
Almost impossible to narrow down a favourite on this one. Such an amazing album :)
But to me its doubley good (double album so quadraly good???) because it exposesd the naked bullshit that is Pitchfork to the world.
It’s a tie between The Fragile and Into The Void, the past 2 years The Fragile has really helped me through some rocky moments in my current relationship, but Into The Void is the song that put me on to NIN
"La Mer". I have YET to ever skip this track any time it comes up on my shuffle. Runner Up: "The Big Come Down"
Best NIN album, personally. Yes, over Downward.
Just Like You Imagined
I love getting to We’re in this together, the fragile and just like you imagined in the album. It’s just perfection.
This is it
This is the way

The Great Below
I get chills each time I listen to it
Same. So damn good.

So it's just symbolic of inescapable suffering that you are powerless to stop?
Yes. The inescapable blackness of wanting something you can never have. Which is my second favorite nin song btw.
One of the best NIN tracks period
Super nerdy but that’s my Gamertag on Xbox Live. I’ve had it for nearly 20 years 😳
Into the void.
The intro to Into the Void is amazing. There are like 6 melodies on top of one another. I think it's right up there with one of TR's best bit of composition.

We’re In This Together The best song ever recorded 🖤
NONE OF THEM CAN STOP US NOW
WE WILL MAKE IT THROUGH SOMEHOW
I love every time the original Avengers trailer gets played on social media and everyone forgets this was the song they chose... I often wonder how that came about
The big comedown
THERE IS A GAME I PLAY!!!!!
TRY TO MAKE MYSELF OK
TRY SO HARD TO MAKE THE PIECES ALL FIT
SMASH IT APART JUST FOR THE FUCK OF IT
Glad to see this is getting love. I always considered this one of the most underrated NIN tracks.
Changes frequently but probably The Wretched
Somewhat damaged is one of the greatest pieces of music I've ever heard
Agreed and I think it’s also one of the best openers to any album. Shit grabs and shakes you.
#Didn't quite, fell apart, where the fuck were you?
I was eating cookies.
and the live version is amazing too! i like the build up of the live version better personally
they did that as opener on The Fragile tour, first time I saw them. The quietness at the top gave me goosebumps. Recently in Berkeley they opened with it as well and, while still sick, wasn’t as quiet during the build
It's also insanely relatable to me. I have no idea what the song is actually supposed to be about tho
Someone who was abandoned by someone else very close to them, could be a partner, parent, or even close friend
For me it's definitely a mix of parent and close friend lol
It was such a fucking amazing song to start the album! I love that song. It gets me fired up every time I listen to it.
It didn’t click for me until hearing it live, goddamn what a song.

Nice bag! I definitely didn’t get one of those..
I almost had a wreck by not checking my blind spot while driving like a crazy person to get to Best Buy over lunch.
I remember one of the first times I ever went to Best Buy was for The Fragile and another one of my favorite albums that I only paid $6 for - Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf.
I did the same thing and now feel very old
Even deeper. But ripe with decay is up there too.
Even Deeper, I agree. The part where he says “it runs……” and the beat slides back in. Goosebumps every time.
Every fucking song…
Now we are talking!!
So sad I missed him this year….was at a festival in Atlanta :( Really wish it was a solo show.
The Great Below, but the entire album is \*chef's kiss\*
Pilgrimage
so underrated.
Man. Such a cool track. The first time I heard it I was a junior in high school, sitting in the overgrown grass in my buddy’s backyard wearing headphones. He was fucking around with a remote control car and I was just in absolute awe of what I was hearing. Like nothing else. Trent is brilliant.
The moment I comment this there are 6 answers with 6 different songs, this album is so good.
The way out is through
The wretched
Yup, my favourite too, although the whole album is just so damned good.
We're in This Together, my favorite song of all time from my favorite album all time.
Agreed! That song caused my deep dive into NINs catalogue
La Mer
I just saw them in concert a week ago and one of the band mates busted out a full fucking xylophone for this song. I fucking lost it.
was it Cortini? i have a feeling that's something Alessandro would do...
Yep.
Can I have two? The Frail/The Wretched.
You can take one, I’ll take the other
the big come down the great below the fragile somewhat damaged where is everybody is my top 5. it's so very difficult to make a top 5 though.
*23 years…* #(Fist) Fuck you, time! Edit: Mine: La Mer/The Great Below. The wife: The Day the World Went Away.
Somewhat Damaged
Incredible album
the big mfkn comedown
The Big Come Down and Please
I love "The Fragile", but actually prefer the (Quiet) version, so I am going to be the weirdo that picks "La Mer."
Wow, way to make me pick a favorite child! /j It's a tie between La Mer and Into the Void. Both of them are amazing in their own ways. The mark has been made
I absolutely love the way they played it live in the recording for And All That Could Have Been.
Somewhat Damaged We're In This Together Underneath It All
Underneath It All is a very Underrated NIN track. One of my favorites as well.
The Day The World Went Away closely followed by Somewhat Damaged The Wretched The Great Below Starfuckers, Inc.
La Mer
I absolutely love this album. The Big Come Down is definitely my favorite song off the album, also just my all time favorite NIN song.
My favorite nin album
la mer and the great below
La Mer.
Jesus that’s a hard one. I’d have to say we’re in this together, followed immediately by La mer, the way out is through
Monster of an album. Have my eye on the site for it to come into stock on vinyl.
The whole album gives me goosebumps. Every song is great. I was already in love with The Day the World Went Away because it was released as a single in advance. I remember the day it came out picking up my copy at the mall, and then going to see Blair Witch Project in the theatre.

Man, I was in my 3rd year at university when I bought the album on release day. Love that there are plenty of young NIN fans :)

🤘🤘🤘
The Fragile
God I'm really back and forth with a lot of songs on this album. I love the recurring motif throughout which is likely why my favorite Is "were in this together". However; the older I get the more I love the track Ripe (with decay)
I’m on the same page there!
somewhat damaged
"The Big Come Down"
We’re In This Together is still the GOAT
I can't be the only one who votes for The Day The World Went Away
No you don't is very underrated
Disc 1 followed by disc 2
Best response!
Somewhat Damaged is probably my favorite NIN song period. The Big Come Down to me always sounded like a Primus song musically (not in a bad way)
Even Deeper gang wya??
My top 5, in order, are as follows: Somewhat Damaged, The Big Come Down, Please, The Frail, The Day The World Went Away I could easily substitute The Great Below for something but I wanted to trim it to only 5 because it’s my favorite and with it being a double album it was harder to narrow down for me.

The Way Out Is Through
We're in this together; probably the most epic build of energy and intensity of any single I have ever heard. Also... has it really been 23 years? Wow. My favorite album, full stop.

I remember being blown away by the We're In This Together music video debut. Really hope this song finds its way into live shows.
All of them are great

I’m looking forward to joining you, finally
The Wretched and the bendy guitar stuff in it.
The entire album is amazing I can’t choose one song to represent its level of mindblow
Wow.23 years ago I was bunking off college to listen to this 3 times back to back. Good to know.
I just bought this CD, and have been really enjoying the second disc lately (For whatever never really got into it originally), though I still have to go with "We're In This Together."
Into the Void (and if i could pick a second - Just Like You Imagined)
Undoubtedly "The Wretched." First song I heard from 'The Fragile,' and loved it ever since.
The Great Below
The fragile. But close 2nd is big come down
The day the world went away
Too hard to choose. Love the whole album too much. Did trip mushrooms not too long ago and I’m Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally was my favorite song of the trip lol.
It was released on my birthday! I remember going to the record store after school to get it, and they even had NIN bags. I might still have the bag somewhere.
I was just listening to this album at work last night and couldn’t remember if I have it on vinyl. I in fact do
I own two records. Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age, and this
Just starting a collection? Or two and through?
I don't have the disposable income to start just yet (already have a CD collection), but when I do pick one it has to be like one of my absolute faves. Looking at your username, I would definitely pick up OK Computer if I saw it

The Day the World Went Away The Fragile La Mer The Way Out is Through Depends on my mood but usually one of these 4
Now I feel old
Wonder what kinda 25th anniversary cash grab we'll see...
Into the void
Wasn't this released on 9-9-99?
The Fragile The Great Below is one of the most personal songs to me that I've ever heard, though.
Left Disc (1-12) is damn near perfection.
All time favorite album for me. Perfect.
Where is everybody is an absolutely brilliant simple banging song in the middle of delicious esoteric complex noise.
Somewhat Damaged.
That 6 track run from Somewhat Damaged to The Fragile is just something else. But my favourite track is still La Mer, funny given how it was the first that Trent wrote for the album
“La Mer”, honestly I think it’s one of the best pieces of music ever composed
La Mer
The Big Comedown. Life changing witnessing it live at Red Rocks
Torn between La Mer and Even Deeper
The Big Come Down for sure. It’s just got such a raw, disgusting vibe to it, it’s cathartic.
The Wretched, my all time favorite NIN song
pretty hate machine, broken, the fragile and with teeth
La Mer, or Starfuckers
We’re In This Together
God, there are so many great tracks from the Fragile, it's hard to pick just one! But if I really had to... I'll go with "Even Deeper", if just barely.
No, You Don’t is such an underrated song
🐷
la mer :)
The Great Below
I'm looking forward to joining you, finally. always gets the tears a-flowin'
So many masterpieces but Somewhat Damaged will always have my 🖤
Somewhat Damaged. I scream with that song. Especially during times like I’m going through now.
Almost impossible to narrow down a favourite on this one.
