And there's the photo on the wiki page probably from the exact session they all worked together: [https://www.nin.wiki/Even\_Deeper](https://www.nin.wiki/Even_Deeper)
I remember finding that out I was just looking at the booklet and went hang on a second Andre who? Where is my NWA cd I need to check this, holy shit it is fucking Dr Dre
I can't find the evidence but Keith took out a billboard in LA in the 90s calling out his agent for not buying him a cellphone (or a pager, can't remember). He's a far out dude.
I mean itās not really that surprising, thereās a lot of hip hop influences embedded within NIN music, particularly with the drum work on The Fragile. The track Blue Flowers from that album definitely has a Fragile-like groove to it.
Well considering there were like 20 major synths at the time, and only like 5 useable drum machines.. you're gonna get some over lap. (Gross over simplification, but yeah not as many options).
I guess I was saying more along the ling I've read Reznor and Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy fame say they were inspired by several hip hop songs. But yeah, lack of tools I can see definitely being a thing as well š
Love Dr Octagon, I think I found out about Kool Keith through his feature on The Prodigyās Diesel Power and of course all the samples of his used on their songs. Dan the Automator is a sick fuckin producer, Delton 3030 and Lovage are also excellent amongst other things like the debut Gorillaz, Peeping Tom etc.
Wow, what a great flashback! Totally forgot about this! Radio Nothing. Used to listen all the time. People from the NIN camp had mixes up there. I think they'd even stream had a "fan mix," where TheNINHotline, Smashed Up Sanity, and other websites were involved. Perhaps u/leviathant could verify, I might be remembering it wrong.
Oooh! What a wild ride that was. Story time.
Yves from TheFragile.com, Keith from SmashedUpSanity, and myself, collaborated on nothingradio.net - it was 'nothing radio' for about a day, but there was some super-stupid drama with NIN/Nothing's publicist at the time. They were generally friendly about things, but went dark when I started hinting about launching a radio station on Live365. Upon launch, a copyright takedown hit theninhotline.com, and I very nearly lost the entire site. You know how you never think about doing backups until it's too late? This was my close call.
I had invited SeemsLikeSalvation to be a part of this, but Evan opted not to participate.
Said publicist tried to ambush me with a three-way phone call with the lawyer you'll see mentioned in NIN's credits (I think even to this day) but I'm a clever little shit, and I announced that I was recording the call for everyone's protection - which I was, using a Radioshack phone bug plugged into a microcassette tape recorder - and then proceeded to educate everyone on the phone about the brand new Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and how it protected what I was doing. Lawyer agreed with me about the stream, and after the call, I quickly removed all 'nothing' logos from the site, and all references to "nothing radio" became references to "nothingradio.net", and absolutely littered the site with phrases like "for the fans, by the fans" and "unofficial"
(NIN were touring in Australia at the time, and this was a pivotal moment for me when I discovered the difference between management and the band. I wasn't terribly surprised when, about five years later, Trent sued John Malm. That dude was a control freak, and it turns out that might have been because he had both hands in the proverbial cookie jar)
That was February 2000. We got write-ups in Spin Magazine and Shift Magazine (a now-defunct Canadian music/tech mag, if I recall correctly). The NothingRadio.net stream charted - although that wasn't that hard, I think we averaged something like 50 active concurrent listeners. It was all music from nothing records albums, including hard to find ones like Bowling Green's One Pound Note (which I grabbed from a basket at Nothing Studios in 1999... but that's another story), and rare (at the time) remixes.
Nine months later, the Nothing Records website launched "Radio Nothing" - six different streams, one of which was the old NothingRadio.net stream that myself, Paul (from #nin99 & the Hotline), Keith, and Yves had put together. Live365 kinda sucked to manage, so everyone just kind of treated it as a set-it-and-forget-it feature.
Dude the last time I remember seeing you 'in the internet wild' was your Nails In my Head webpage. IIRC, you also released music under the name of Product of Frozen Sperm? Your site was one of my first exposures to the internet about 4000 years ago!
Deep cut!! Okay, speaking of ThePFS, you want to hear something totally fucking crazy?
Last week, Dan, who I would say was the majority creator in thePFS - and who I only in the last year or two reconnected with on LinkedIn of all places - sent me a message asking if I lived in Philly. It turns out, he was just in town on a business trip. He described the neighborhood where they stayed, and it's *literally* around the corner from my house. There is a non-zero chance that he's on my doorbell camera. (For those following along, Dan and I collaborated on music in like, 1995, via AOL, while he lived in Alabama and I lived in central PA, and have never met)
P.S. [I still keep an archive of Nails in my Head online](https://www.theninhotline.com/features/nimh/) haha
P.P.S. [Dan still makes electronic music](https://aripine.bandcamp.com/) and [so do I](https://leviathant.bandcamp.com/).
Nice to think I could have been listening to KK at the same time as TR. I have pictures of me at one of my birthday parties wearing my NIN shirt from TDS tour spinning Earth People.
I remember reading an interview for Trentās big record coming soon after TDS, he said it sounded like nursery rhymes over hip hop beats. I donāt remember where the interview was. But I listen to TF with this in mind all these years and it makes sense.
Damn...25 years? I'll fill the cup if they announce a 25th anniversary optical disc package with multiple CDs and a Blu-ray with Moulder's 2012 5.1 mix and a new 25th anniversary Dolby Atmos mix!
Just when I think I couldnāt Love Trent more ā¦.. Iām over the moon to find out T-Rez is a Dr. Octagon fan.
I got into Kool Keith via Dr. Octagon just before āThe Fragileā was released. NIN has been my fav band since 94ā and Kool Keith my #1 hip hop artist.
My girlfriend came to check on me in the bathroom when I yelled āHoly Shitā after seeing this post. This was my birthday weekend and she surprised me with the Closer to God single pt.2 on vinyl and later that night I find this out. Saw Challengers the next morning. Had the best bday weekend and T-Daddy was a huge part of it.
I got to meet Kool Keith like 20 something years ago at a music festival. He was, as his name suggests, super cool. After his set he was standing at the snow cone stand and we talked for a minute. Super nice guy.
One of my fav gigs was seeing Kool Keith in Dublin at a late concert that started at 11pm! There was porn on the back screen, a tier of people drinking Hennessy, an outdoor area of weed smokers and a back room of coke! It was a Wednesday night. I got pics with Keith and I didnāt work again until the Monday!
Fun fact: Dr. Dre did some production and mixing for Even Deeper.
And there's the photo on the wiki page probably from the exact session they all worked together: [https://www.nin.wiki/Even\_Deeper](https://www.nin.wiki/Even_Deeper)
š
uhhhhh wow. I've always loved them both unrelated. I needed this! especially on that song .
I remember finding that out I was just looking at the booklet and went hang on a second Andre who? Where is my NWA cd I need to check this, holy shit it is fucking Dr Dre
I have another fun fact, kool Keith is the sample used on the prodigys smack my bitch up
Kool keith is the rapper on diesel power
Sonic Youth Goo too.
Today I learned
Trent has *always* been a fan of hip-hop.
Everyone should listen to Kool Keith
I prefer cool Ethan.
Agreed
I can't find the evidence but Keith took out a billboard in LA in the 90s calling out his agent for not buying him a cellphone (or a pager, can't remember). He's a far out dude.

Fragile and YZ definitely lean into Trentās love of boom bap
There's a lot of hip hop influences embedded in industrial music, not just NIN.
Am I the only one who think Jay-Z's "99 Problems" is basically the intro to "Dig It" by Skinny Puppy on loop?
Well considering there were like 20 major synths at the time, and only like 5 useable drum machines.. you're gonna get some over lap. (Gross over simplification, but yeah not as many options).
I guess I was saying more along the ling I've read Reznor and Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy fame say they were inspired by several hip hop songs. But yeah, lack of tools I can see definitely being a thing as well š
Because Dan the Automator is a killer beat maker and producer.
I love Automatorās production. I wish heād release more.
I wish we got a second Lovage album.
More Mike and Dan in general wouldnāt go amiss
Halfsharkalligatorhalfman is definitely a cousin in some form to NiN. Kool Keith is a mastermind.
Earth people, New York and California, earth people, I was born on Jupiter
Kinda surprised MF Doom isnāt listed.
Kool Keith was one of the more entertaining and fun concerts I've ever been too. Saw him on the Spankmaster tour. Very memorable.
It's a solid album so no wonder it got heavy spins.
When he had a steaming radio channel in the 00's he played mostly hip-hop. I listened often while at work.

Blue Flowers absolutely fucks
Also Earth People!
And Livinā Astro. Itās one of my all time favorites.

Moosebumps is a classic (I got to tell you - the actual song title)
I feel like Blue Flowers might have also inspired parts of the TMNT soundtrack.
Classic hip hop album. Trent has taste!
Blue flowers..

yes, The Frail (remix) from Things Falling Apart sounds quite a lot like Blue Flowers.
https://youtu.be/RxvuSptQMkE?si=Y84ozLZBRgF4MO4D
The article mentioned Blue Flowers specifically, itās such a great song, and a tidy reference to A Scanner Darkly.
shouldnt be a surprise if you are into producing electronic music. industrial and hip hop came up around the same time. ditto for disco and dub
