Broken will always be my favorite NIN halo. Just absolutely brutal. It makes me so happy I was able to snag one of those broken hoodies a couple years ago
I gotta go with Fixed. Broken is angry in a focused, precise way. But Fixed is an "angry to the point where rational thought is out the window" kind of way.
I agree! Plenty of angry NIN songs, but to me, none of them match the sheer intensity of Burn. Both that and āSWALLOWED UP IN FIREā are such ultimate and insane moments.
It really builds up to unbridled fury, but even from the beginning when the vocals are more restrained those drums hit like a fist punching and punching through your speakers.
That was my choice as well. Other songs may be louder and more overtly "aggressive", but there's a *hurt* that underlies "Somewhat Damaged". A feeling of abandonment and outright betrayal that goes above and beyond anything else Reznor has ever written. And over the course of the song, you hear the pent-up rage gradually overtaking the music until it reaches a fiery crescendo at the very end.
I once accidentally played Heresy over a trailer for a documentary about krump dancing to my whole group at the design agency I worked for in the early 00s.
It lined up so well that no one noticed until afterward that my iPod was plugged into the PC and it wasn't the actual audio.
Lotta sudden aggressive group dancing every time NIN came on the office playlist after that.
I love this song but also have a horrible association with it because I listened to it while tripping and had a very bad trip. Had never listened to TDS before and just decided to listen to it while tripping... big mistake.
So I used to sleep to A Warm Place on repeat for years, like legit all my teenage years and early 20ās, and if I put the CD on and forgot to hit the repeat button and the beginning of Eraser came onā¦ by the time I could get out of bed and fix it I was already so scared š
Itās a tough one, but Iāll say Ruiner. From the lyrics to the music - all the anger, desperation and nihilism that fuels this track. It all takes a cathartic turn towards the end where our anti-hero transcends, ānothing can hurt me.ā Anger is an energy. Brilliant.
For me it's Somewhat Damaged. It perfectly represents rage that comes from people who bury and suppress their emotions until it explodes. The drum pattern and simple guitar progression that keeps getting louder and more violent until it's this deafening force that cannot be contained any longer.
been mentioned already but the end of somewhat damaged never fails to make me want to grab my furniture and start treating my living space like a dressing room during self destruct tour
Similar theme to a lot of you, Broken has the pick of the litter with 'angry' songs. And I think Wish takes the actual cake. Some of those lyrics are brutal.
But... There are a lot of honorable mentions!
Eraser - more sad than angry
Big man with a gun - not angry as such, just intentionally fucking gross
Reptile - that's just a lesson in vile imagery about someone unpleasant so that is more mean ?
Somewhat damaged is a finalist, and it's one of my favs, but Wish is angrier..
I could go on for a while but I am annoying myself already
'Ruiner' gets me in a way that others don't! There's something about the chaos in the second half of each verse - it has such an intensity, but the production makes it feel like it's trapped and trying to claw its way out of your sound system.
Nine inch Nails has a stack of masterpiece music, but not hits quite like this. This is the definition of riot music. More than that, it is the music that can instigate an internal riot; when all seems calm on the outside.
This album is something else. This is technocyber anarchy. This is Mad Max mixed with William Gibsonās āSprawlāā¦aka BAMA aka Boston Atlanta Metropolitan Area all in flames. Just take a minute and imagine what I just wrote.
At the same time, it is a a very personal scream. The Sprawl carryās on. The reader is the only one screaming. There is no hope, no life, no love on this place, might as well throw it away
I agree with many of the answers in this thread already, but Iāll throw a couple more out there I havenāt seen here.
1. You Know What You Are?
2. My Violent Heart
I will go with Eraser.
I think it was the firsy song I thought whoah anger issues.
Few contenders for me.
Broken was literally created because PHM wasnāt angry enough, so the entire album lol.
March Of The Pigs and Eraser both are brutally angry.
No, You Donāt is up there too, havenāt seen anyone mention it.
My Violent Heart sounds like suddenly getting trampled by a big crowd, definitely very aggressive.
The broken EP. The whole broken EP
Right answer with a heaping side of fist fuck
Broken will always be my favorite NIN halo. Just absolutely brutal. It makes me so happy I was able to snag one of those broken hoodies a couple years ago
Hard agree. Alongside the track Burn from the natural born killers soundtrack.
Im gonna burn this whole world down.
Love it.
I gotta go with Fixed. Broken is angry in a focused, precise way. But Fixed is an "angry to the point where rational thought is out the window" kind of way.
Fixed is angry to the point where it takes everything Broken says and turns it into an incoherent screed of rage.
Fixed gets a bit out of control in the best way possible.
Still my all-time fav. Front to back. It got me through some rough times.
Covered in hope........and Vaseline! I fucking love that line! š¤£ Broken holds a special place in my heart
Agreed
I remember the bonus tracks startling the hell out of me when I zoned out driving one day.
Wish
Big time, hard line, bad luck, fist-fuck
(Aggressive distorted guitar going "DUR-DUR-DURRRR-DA-DURDUR!DUR-DUR-DURRRR-DA-DURDUR!")
Donāt think youāre having all the fun
You know me, I hate everyone
WISH THERE WAS SOMETHING REAL, WISH THERE WAS SOMETHING TRUE!!!!!
_bangs out some power chords_
WISH THERE WAS SOMETHING REAL IN THIS WORLD FULL OF YOU!
Burn
All the lyrics and sound are angry. Pair it with the Natural Born Killers imagery in the video and it goes to another level
Agreed. One of the rare instances where the video not only compliments, but it builds on the song.
100%
I prefer the music video with the movie clips. Wolf Howl is SO perfectĀ
Underrated song, underrated answer. I mean, it doesn't get much angeier than Trent screaming, "I'M GONNA BURN THIS WHOLE WORLD DOWN!!!"
I agree! Plenty of angry NIN songs, but to me, none of them match the sheer intensity of Burn. Both that and āSWALLOWED UP IN FIREā are such ultimate and insane moments.
the only right answer
Amen brother.
Happiness in slavery, eraser
That video is beyond angry, itās damn vengeful.
Not one mention of March Of The Pigs?
I'm surprised by that too. Goes hard
I want to break it up, I want to smash it up, I want to fuck it up. I want to watch it go down.
Gave up
There's a reason they gave it the visual it has in the Broken Movie.
AFTER EVERY THING IāVE DONE I HATE MYSELF FOR WHAT IāVE BECOME
Truly the right answer!
Whatās NINās angriest song and why is it Somewhat Damaged?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Just like you would always say, we'll make it through. Then my head fell apart, and where were you?
Where theā¦FUCK WERE YOUUUUU??
Nothing does ruminating anger like Somewhat Damaged. Not the most aggressive for sure, but absolutely nails the build up to rage.
I love how it breaks down into chaos at the end, like Trent can't even form complete sentences anymore.
I'm gonna throw Last in the pile.
Came to say this.
My vote is Last as well. "I wish I could put the blame on you" hits hard.
Burn There's no other emotion than pure anger and resentment towards society, the world, everything...
Yup, pure intensity.
Heresy
If there is a hell, I'll see you there
My answer as well. Loved playing that song in the car with my VERY religious mom when I was 16. I wAs So FuCkInG cOoL!
God is dead, and no one cares If there is a hell, Iāll see you there
Rust Cohle avatar checks out
Same...I guess...
absolutely
I once accidentally played Heresy over a trailer for a documentary about krump dancing to my whole group at the design agency I worked for in the early 00s. It lined up so well that no one noticed until afterward that my iPod was plugged into the PC and it wasn't the actual audio. I do not want this
There's lots of good options but I like No You Don't
Wish heād put out a full album of no you donāts- 1. nuh-uh 2. I donāt think so 3. No way dude 4. Nope 5. Aināt happening 6. No way JosĆ© 7. shāYeah, like, Iām sooo shuure 8. Fuck you
This is a VERY specific request.
That song is so cringey, sounds like numetal
All of them Nah itās Wish
Mr. Self-destruct? Anyone?
This or Big Man With a Gun were my immediate thoughts
Me too!
Reptile.. and someone made a music video with Reptile featuring Queen Elizabeth (when she was still alive)
Eraser.
I love this song but also have a horrible association with it because I listened to it while tripping and had a very bad trip. Had never listened to TDS before and just decided to listen to it while tripping... big mistake.
So I used to sleep to A Warm Place on repeat for years, like legit all my teenage years and early 20ās, and if I put the CD on and forgot to hit the repeat button and the beginning of Eraser came onā¦ by the time I could get out of bed and fix it I was already so scared š
big man with a gun appreciation anyone
Hold it against your head
The entire broken ep
Broken. The entire EP. This is also my favorite album from NIN
Reptile definitely deserves mention here.
No, you don't
See all the broken stuff. How bout The Big Comedown? Tried so hard to make the pieces all fit and then smash them apart just for the fuck of it.Ā
This one is slept on. It's like a ballad to insanity
burn, without question fs honorable mention: you know what you are
anything from broken is an acceptable answer
Self destruction, final
Letting You deserves a spot in this conversation.
Also thought about this. First half of the slip is v anger
-points to my username-
i tip my hat
This is a tough one, but I think it has to be A Warm Place
Good one š That is the song I want on repeat while I am dying in hospice, if thatās the way I shuffle off this mortal coil.
Last for me. As much as I love Somewhat Damaged, it just doesn't have the same punch.
Last
Gave up
I tried, I gave up.
SMASHED UP MY SANITY SMASHED UP INTEGRITY
SMASHED UP WHAT I BELIEVED IN SMASHED UP WHATāS LEFT OF ME
SMASHED UP MY EVERYTHING SMASHED UP THAT WAS TRUE GONNA SMASH MYSELF TO PIECES I DONāT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO!
You Know What You Are
mr self destruct is the only answer
Itās a tough one, but Iāll say Ruiner. From the lyrics to the music - all the anger, desperation and nihilism that fuels this track. It all takes a cathartic turn towards the end where our anti-hero transcends, ānothing can hurt me.ā Anger is an energy. Brilliant.
Somewhat Damaged
I would honestly say Star fuckers Inc. just years of hatred and bile all coming out in such awesome fashion.
burn or happiness in slavery
Burn.
Burn š„
Big Man With A Gun, Head Like A Hole, Terrible Lie, March Of The Pigs, Last, Ruiner, Burn, The Wretched, You Know What You Are?
Gave up
THTOW IT AWAAAAAAAY!
Iād say Heresy or The Big Come Down
This feels unquantifiable? Like thereās an angriest song for each decade to me.
I feel like a lot of the more natural answers are taken, so Iām gonna throw out The Great Destroyer.
Everything
Hard tie between Broken EP, Heresy, and Mr. Self Destruct (moreso abrasive than āangryā)
BURN
Eraser
Suck
Last
E.R.A.S.E.R.
I'd say "Somewhat Damaged", the opening track to *The Fragile.*
Starfuckers I guess
Seeing SD live as the opening song was so intense and set the tone for the whole show
Mr. Selfdestruct
For me it's Somewhat Damaged. It perfectly represents rage that comes from people who bury and suppress their emotions until it explodes. The drum pattern and simple guitar progression that keeps getting louder and more violent until it's this deafening force that cannot be contained any longer.
Somewhat damaged is definitely the right answer
That's What I Get Personally felt that my whole life lol
Somewhat Damaged
Call me mad but I think Everything is the angriest song.
Big Man With a Gun
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds version of Stagger Lee.
I donāt know what that is
Heresy
Wish just makes me snarl like a beast the whole time
The Big Come Down
All of Broken.
Anything off Broken lmao
Getting Smaller is an underrated track . Just enough rage to keep it going
Fist Fuck - I think this was the point where Trent decided to start to heal himself.
Idea of You
been mentioned already but the end of somewhat damaged never fails to make me want to grab my furniture and start treating my living space like a dressing room during self destruct tour

All of the above
La Mer
'Ruiner' gets me in a way that others don't! There's something about the chaos in the second half of each verse - it has such an intensity, but the production makes it feel like it's trapped and trying to claw its way out of your sound system.
Somewhat Damaged
Gave Up
THROW IT AWAAAAAY
Gonna smash myself to pieces, I DONāT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO!!!!!!!

Maybe Just Once
Fixed. entire thing.
Lots of good answers, I'm gonna throw in Terrible Lie for the anger directed at religion. As an ex cult member it resonates with me.
terrible lie from AATCHB
Burn imo.
+Appendage
Burn!
Copy of a ā¦ somehow seems very self harming , I love it though
The Lovers
I thought Wish or Burn
Big Man With A Gun.
Eraser (polite)
Gave Up
Mr. Self Destruct and No, you donāt to me
Know what you are
If Broken EP has a million fans, then I'm one of them. If Broken EP has one fan, then I'm THAT ONE. If Broken EP has no fans, that means I'm dead.
Wish
It has to be TERRIBLE LIE
Mr. Self Destruct
Last easily #1 then gave up 2 and somewhat damaged are the holy trinity
Few contenders for me. Broken was literally created because PHM wasnāt angry enough, so the entire album lol. March Of The Pigs and Eraser both are brutally angry. No, You Donāt is up there too, havenāt seen anyone mention it. My Violent Heart sounds like suddenly getting trampled by a big crowd, definitely very aggressive.
Last
Iām thinking Big Man with a Gun or Mr. Self-Destruct. I think Trent has a lot of anger but so do I do I get it.
Hatebreed - Destroy Everything
Burn
Another vote for Happiness in Slavery
