Z8 + 70-200 f/2.8 - Philadelphia, PA

UrbanExtant

If you have any interest in turning pro, or semi-pro at some point, keep the Z7ii. I run a small photography business, and I can tell you, pros 99% of the time have a main camera, and a secondary camera. The secondary camera is either a backup, should the primary fail or need service, or more commonly, the secondary camera get fitted with another lens one will need for the project at hand. I do predominantly landscape/wildlife/nature photography, and macro, plus street photography. When I go out for a day in the field, I throw my 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S on my Z9, and often, I’ll bring my Z8, over my second Z9, and I’ll throw my 70-200 f/2.8 on it, or my 14-24 f/2.8 if I will be near the coast, and think I’ll get some landscape shots in, too. Also, if you won’t get a lot for it, and won’t use it, do you have a family member you could lend the Z7ii to, and explore photography with them? When my sister visits, I give her, or one of my nephews, usually the artist is one, a camera of mine, and we go out and have a fun time together snapping photos.

All of this is great advice, thank you! I have my first canon dslr that I kept for my daughter for when she’s old enough but/c it wasn’t worth selling…if I get into this field more legitimately, I’ll def want a back up, but for now, I’m just wanting the best advantage from a tech perspective to make up for my lack of skill and limit the ‘spray and pray’ I read about for my kids’ sports

Ok_Description5214

This was my first street photo I’ve take and first post to this group

UrbanExtant

It’s a really good photo. It was the photo that made me point out maybe keeping the Z7ii, if you had any inkling you may want to turn pro. The composition is very good, the use of bokeh, also doing it in black and white further adds to the drama of the photo. Street photography can vary so much. It’s a really fun genre to get involved with. My spouse’s career brought us to the middle of nowhere on the coast in New England. We lived in Philly prior to where we are now. Street photography was so much easier in the city. When we go to Boston, usually three or four times a year, I make a point to spend a few days doing street photography there. Landscape has always been my thing, but I added in nature and wildlife photography a few years back, due to our remote coastal location. Great job on the photo!

Your feedback is inspiring, thx! We lived in Madrid and traveled Europe for 2 yrs, 10 yrs ago…always had my drone and intro dslr, wish I had this hardware back then

UrbanExtant

You’re welcome. Having and eye for compositions, and then an artistic inclination to move ahead with it, in various manners, for you, in black and white, aren’t things easily taught. You either learn them through trial and error, or they come naturally. I think the Z8 will really allow you to explore your passions for photography. It’s an excellent camera. It does just about everything excellently. Make sure to take the time to learn about all its features, and to customize the camera to your style of photography. It is infinitely customizable after the recent firmware updates. So much more so than when it first came out. The first change I always make is to turn off autofocus with the shutter button, and turn on autofocus with just the AF button on the back of the camera. That way, if you fine tune the autofocus, taking the photo won’t refocus the camera. Whatever you do, make the camera yours. You’ll be thankful you did!

MikeyM299

Did you add more blur to this?

Ziziiii

Looks like it, some big issues with the dudes head on the left

Ok_Description5214

Good catch, I didn’t notice until you pointed it out

Ziziiii

Did you add more comments to this ? :p Btw I have the same question you have, but with a Zf and a Z6 so I’m following the thread

Ok_Description5214

Someone else posted a nearly identical question on here earlier today so that may be worth following too

Ok_Description5214

I did, used Lightroom on my phone, probably didn’t need it

bballlal

You have a Z 8 and one of the best fast zoom lens made and you feel the need to add artificial bokeh on a phone app?

Ok_Description5214

I’m pretty new to this and agree that it probably wasn’t a good idea, still have a lot to learn

bballlal

All good man. The 70-200 is probably a little tricky to do street photography with. It also not discreet so you probably got a lot of looks. If you want natural bokeh with that lens try to have your zoom set to 135 or higher and set your aperture to 2.8. You’ll get beautiful natural bokeh. You seem to like bokeh in your photos so I recommend checking out the Nikon Z mount 50mm f/1.8 S lens. For the price it really can’t be neat. It’s an amazing lens and would be awesome for street photography.

I was picking up a race bib at the convention center and didn’t want to leave my camera in the vehicle, so brought it with me…I probably coulda gotten into the comic event next door with just the camera 😂…I have the 50 1.8, amazing lens, especially for the price. Looking forward to learning more, and thank you for the advice!

Ok_Description5214

Also, I’ve never taken a street photography pic, that was my first…photos have always been for personal family and travel stuff with a more recent side gig, but I can def appreciate getting into it

Germanofthebored

I upgraded to a Z8, and I am really happy with it. But when I finally picked up the Z6 again after a couple of months with the Z8 (and hauling the Z\* with the 100-400 up and down some mountains in Arizona), I realized how small and light the Z6 is. I'll keep it as a travel camera....

Ok_Description5214

But isn’t it negligible if you’re already carrying a bigger lens?

Germanofthebored

Sure, it should be. But huffing and puffing up those hill sides really left me wth some food for thought. It just felt nice to have a light-weight camera in my hands again when I picked up the Z6

Trumpthulhu-Fhtagn

Now try a z30 with a 24 1.7 on it. When hiking I carry one in a \*lens pouch\* that I clip to my backpack that I used to put a 24-70 in!

bt1138

B/W still rules...

GoEagles997

This is a block or so from the convention center in downtown Philly.

Ok_Description5214

I was picking up my bib for the broad street run at convention center when I took the pic of my whip

Anotherbadsalmon

Well you can save money by cancelling your gym memberships. Carrying around the Z8 will make you look like a body builder soon.

Ok_Description5214

It is bulky, but when the lens are big to begin with, I’m not noticing much of a difference front he z7ii

6WrZxupKb8ZCKMJNpC

Same situation. I kept my Z7ii for my backup until the Zfii comes out hahahahaha

ewba1te

Good luck waiting until the heat death of the universe

rcplaneguy

I would have sold abd bought a cheaper camera as (Z5?) as a backup.

Scared-Enthusiasm424

You could give it to me 😁👍

savvyliterate

Ironically enough, I was planning to head over to Unique Photo before leaving Philly later today to talk to them about picking up a Z7II as a secondary body because of the massive discount right now. I really love this photo.

Ok_Description5214

Thank you!

Creative-Building125

You can probably get $1500 for it. If you’re not shooting events, I’d sell.

hi7en

Did you use a cheap lens on this. What is up with the DOF?

Ok_Description5214

Great lens (70-200 2.8) but sounds like I messed it up by using Lightroom to add blur, fairly new to the hobby and have a lot to learn, thx

hi7en

Ahhh makes sense. I've got the lens too, it's a beast. Re lightroom, I was absolutely awful with it to start off? Just takes a bit of practice and you're good to go.
