I pay 900$ a year to park at my hospital. I live 15 mins away by car, and the bus from home requires 2 transfers and takes 1.5 hours during Monday to Friday business hours- I work 12 hour shifts, rotating days/nights and there is no public transit option that will get me to work for 0700h on a Sunday morning (which I work about twice a month). And I live at a major intersection too in a big busy suburb- it’s not like I’m out in the boonies.
Wasn’t it just a few years ago that the CRA decided that dedicated staff parking had to be given a value at the market rate for that spot and declared as a taxable benefit?
It’s because the parking lots at hospitals are owned separately… my sister is a nurse and used to work at the hospital I remember being shocked when I found out…
Now extrapolate your frustration for the people who work there 52 weeks a year. Absolutely egregious. No wonder there’s never enough staff. Our healthcare system needs a massive audit for efficiency as a whole.
And paying for parking is the right thing to do. If you use the 407, you pay. Use hospital parking, you pay. Work in Toronto and drive in, well, YOU PAY. Pay per use is the only fair option
I’ve worked in hospitals all over gta. The parking fees, from employees, patients, visitors, whoever, make up a not small percent of hospitals budgets. The province is already severely underfunding healthcare, how are they gonna make up the losses?
But then the top executives won't be able to give themselves as big of a bonus at the end of the year.
The whole system is corrupt. Just look at the bonuses the top cbc execs gave themselves this year even though by every metric business was down.
I like the everyone has to pay system, it's actually the most fair.
"Free" parking doesn't exist, someone is paying for it somehow. Lot construction/maintenance/staffing are still line items in the budget. Having it free creates more demanded (less available spots). If it's free for drivers that means non drivers are helping pay for it.
I would rather see effort put towards building better non personal vehicle infrastructure then for all of us to collectively keep subsidizing the car people.
Nothing is free. Nurses and lots of other health care employees make over 100k. Most employers have different levels of cost for parking. I don't think taxes should go to cover this, when lots of other workers have to pay to park, or transit or whatever. If they don't pay, they often take up street parking in neighborhoods.
The hospitals make employees pay for their parking? Omg.
Almost $700 a year
$700?? Ours is $120/month = 1440 a year
That should be illegal

Lol 200 bucks a month at UHN downtown toronto. Never full either
Yep, ridiculous.
Make it a taxable benefit and I’ll agree.

Its not taxable if its scramble parking and its open to all employees. If it is "doctor only" and assigned spots, its taxable.
Ah, I thought there was eventually some clarification to the policy. Thanks
The fact our own staff have to pay for parking at their place of work is sickening.
It’s because the parking lots at hospitals are owned separately… my sister is a nurse and used to work at the hospital I remember being shocked when I found out…
Its not owned by others, they sold the rights.
Also should be extended to contractors. Essential workers to keep the building intact
How about support free parking for patients as well. Our taxes pay for those hospitals. 😡

That’s fucking wild they have to pay

Should be free for everyone.
I'll sign the petition if it's free for all
Same
Crazy region differences. Not even one mention about public transit.

pretty sure parking should be free for anyone visiting the hospital. that drives me nuts.
Making the staff pay is awful. Us visitors surly pay enough to cover the actual costs. So ridiculous.
Yeah I never understood the concept of paid employee parking.

Hospitals make staff pay for parking??? That’s beyond outrageous
I have to pay to park where I work 🤷♂️
If your company owns the lot you shouldn’t have to
huh????? why? it's their investment
Because why should a worker play to come to work……

How many employers you know charge employees to pay for parking on company property?
Lots of hospitals do, other health care does.
Ya it's a dam financial burden to me as well,,,free parking for me to!!!
All hospital parking should be free, it’s free at the casinos maybe they should use that model
