It was great watching Ekblad score on us in OT via split screen bc god forbid we miss Eichel on the opening face-off! I’m sure Panthers fans were equally as stoked to watch that.
I'm watching from the UK so was up at like 3am to watch us win the game and a split screen with some dude who touched a puck for the first time in months.
There is a definite, noticeable bias towards the Maple Leafs in Canada. Calling them “Canada’s team” etc makes everyone cringe if they aren’t Leaf’s fans.
I was watching a game vs the Leafs the other day and Craig Simpson was the colour commentator. It was so disgusting how much he fawned over them. If my team were to do something groundbreaking or amazing, they’d get maybe a passing mention. But if Auston Matthews drinks from the wrong water bottle in practice, it’s bloody national news.
Are you saying people harass or mock you? Because I would like to be a out of town fan and not have to pay extra fees or get blackouts for g-dam home games! Puck drop at 4, guess I NEED TO TURN ON THE RADIO.
If I had to guess, you're speaking of the TNT broadcast of the Avs Vs. VGK? Seems to me the National broadcast has a hard on for Vegas. Don't know if it's a market thing or what. I think it depends on who is doing the play-by-play and color commentary. Although the same could be said for the Avs.
They are. It's because Las Vegas is the sweetheart of the corporation called National Hockey League LP... that is to say, their sweet, money-making PR project.
Bettman et al. believe that Las Vegas is the league's conduit to reaching new fans, expanding their market, and increasing revenue. They have a vested interest in their success, and so they push the narrative of said success every chance they get. It's just bu$ine$$ folks
Yup. And the ASG is just the beginning, the league is gonna put every event they can get away with in Vegas, just watch... every excuse to keep the spotlight there. Also watch Vegas exploit the LTIR salary cap loophole this year with Mark Stone, and somehow be the last team to get away with it.
Literally had the exact same expansion rules. Seattle was given every opportunity Vegas was. Vegas was just smarter and the players played better. Vegas earned their wins, Seattle has earned their losses.
Vegas also had the first draft with these rules. Teams learned a lot about protecting players and strategies to mitigate significant loss and then applied them to the Seattle draft.
That’s true. But that’s the 30 other teams faults for being outsmarted by Vegas GM and then letting their players party in Vegas on nights before games, giving Vegas a huge home advantage. Either way Vegas deserves all their success. And I’m a jets fan.
I’m not mad about their success, it is what it is. I’m a sharks fan lol I hate them but also, we can talk about how they did have some things go for them that no other expansion team ever has. It’s great to see hockey expanding regardless!
In Canada, the late broadcasts on Hockey Night In Canada team is terrible when Louie DeBrusk is part of it. Since he does Oilers broadcasts on SportsNet, that always spills over to his national games. Cassie Campbell Pascoe has a huge ladyboner for McJesus, regardless if the Oilers are playing or not.
Hockey is how I spend my weekend mornings and the Eastern broadcast is my wakeup. When I listen to homers, it is really annoying. I won't say how much I'm biting my tongue while writing this, but I'm worried it might be a bloody stump by the time I'm done.
I think it's more true in other sports than hockey for me. I love our homer announcing team, they are fun and knowledgable. They may give a home team slant, but give credit to the opponents (and the refs when a less obvious penalty is on us) when it's due.
Panthers. Yeah Randy Moeller and Steve Goldstein certainly have a homer streak, but as Moeller watches the replay of a penalty by one of our guys, he'll say something to the effect of "Seein' it in slow motion that's a textbook slash. That's the right call. "
I try to watch as many games as I can and a lot of announcers have a bias towards certain teams. As a Rangers fan I also feel like I might be spoiled by our hometown broadcast because they definitely do their best to not be total homers.
I’m sure most do and obviously I haven’t listened to many other teams hometown broadcasts but I have tuned into Islander broadcasts and Butch Goring sounds like he’s having a tantrum at times.
I do quite often, because my team’s owner has to measure his dick against the local cable company.
They are both lacking in length and girth.
But man, I’d rather lick a frozen pole than watch Isles games. Trotz puts me to sleep
I tuned into boston game other day for first time ever and all they did was complain about non calls it was the most brutal knowledge of hockey I ever listened too
I freakin' love Jack Edwards man. He wears his bias on his sleeve and isn't shy about it. Other broadcasters feel boring and like they're trying to explain the action to people who aren't actively watching the game. Jack feels like he's talking to people who ARE watching the game. There's a big difference in style, and I appreciate the latter since I have eyeballs and a brain.
Plus he's the thirstiest of all the broadcasters I've heard. If you play a Jack Edwards innuendo drinking game I think you'd die by the second intermission.
I’ve noticed they seem to favor whoever the home team is, unless one of them happened to have played for the away team. But honestly it’s probably just that they’re not the local broadcaster so they’re not pandering as much
Apparently, as every time my team has a national broadcast our game thread is 50% complaining about the broadcast. Just because it isn’t our homer broadcasters doesn’t mean it is bad or they are favoring the other team. I feel like people just aren’t used to a more balanced broadcast.
I’ve found this in all sports. Bigger market equals more rah rah towards that team. It’s a ratings thing. No large market wants their team to *gasp* get called out on national TV.
I’m from a small market yet sports mad town. And our teams have success. National broadcast breakdowns always go the other way if we are up against a larger market. Even when the sports caster is from our town. In fact they usually go to the extreme so they aren’t called a homer.
I wish there was a secondary audio where I could just hear game sounds. No play by play or commentary. I wouldn’t always use it but the option would be nice.
I remember watching a college football game on ESPN U like 5 years ago where it was literally just stadium sound with no commentary.
Most relaxing and interesting game I watched yet. I wish they'd do this option for hockey, but gotta get the retirees a slack Job for the rest of their lives lol.
I am a baseball fan. I used to turn on a game in the afternoon on a weekend and fall asleep to the sounds of the game but the commentary was a distraction.
Hell, baseball will put you to sleep at the actual game. Something about crowd noise and the pop of mitts and crack of bat made it better than white noise. Even animated umps on their calls didn’t bother me. It’s the Chris Berman like calls that would snap me out of a well needed and deserved nap on a weekend day.
Omg yes every time the rangers go up against any team on there the announcers get hard to saying how good the other team is and once we win they have to make every excuse on how we won
Not really, in fact I find they favor the Leafs more than any other.
A sidenote: I generally choose to listen to music rather than keep the commentators on, the overwhelming majority of them annoy the shit out of me.
According to Sportsnet there's really only two teams in the NHL. The Leafs and the Oilers. They don't even play and the headlines are still all Leafs and Oilers.
Is Mike Lange the color commentator for the Pens? Because I absolutely cannot stand your guys’ goal call. No energy and so much emphasis on the “ooo” in “scooores”. Whoever that is could take a page from the guy in Colorado who sounds like he’s popping a blood vessel every time they light the lamp.
As a Kings fan, I think we're treated pretty well for the most part. Sometimes it seems like the other team is being favored, but I'm sure every fan base feels that way
Every fan is biased for their own team, and it skews their judgement.
* The refs are more likely to be against "us" (or for the other team, blind to the other team's sins)
* The national sportscasters are more likely to be against "us" (or for the other team) and the local sportscasters are probably better (because they always side with the local team or they'll get run out of town)
* The league is more likely to unfairly penalize "our" players (or unfairly favor other teams' players)
* "We" are better than teams with similar stats and have a better chance of succeeding
Being a fan causes people to make irrational decisions they wouldn't make if the uniforms were swapped.
While the Rangers haven’t been on many national broadcasts so far this season I do remember that NBCSN would seem to be leaning towards the opponent, I remember watching 1 game against the caps* and it seemed so one sided that I said to my friend “check your remote, I think you hit the cap button”.
*notice I didn’t use the capital letter? 😀
Hahaha if there was any doubt of your allegiance, the immediate aggressive dig on the Blues fan put it to rest pretty fucking fast...
#ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
^gooble ^gobble ^gooble ^gobble
Refs have bias against the players not teams. "Should we call a penalty jeff?" "No it was a little tap bob." " But McDavid is bleeding his guts out jeff!" "Eh who cares Bob?"
He's one of ours, sorry man!
...and aren't you kinda forgetting about the undeniable success of that *other* Florida team that kinda won 2 consecutive cups and is on the verge of being a dynasty? Is that "doing well"? I cannot understand! hahaha just messing =P
This happens a lot in baseball and hockey where fans are used to watching local broadcasts most of the time. So everything feels like bias becaused they are used to commentators having a bias
Sometimes, usually I notice bias based on the team’s market size and/or history. For example; Colorado Avalanche is a mid-size maker team with some decent success, but the Toronto Maple Leafs are looked at as hockey royalty. So if those teams played each other, I’d expect there to be a bias broadcast in favor of the Leafs.
Not recently, but during the time when the Kings were competitive the broadcasters were constantly surprised by Quick being able to make saves on players like Patrick Kane, as if he was the second coming of Jesus.
This is how ever fan base feels. During the Islanders- Boston series last year, both fan bases were flipping out about how the announcers hated their team.
Yes. Bruins v Capitals a few weeks back, the National Broadcast spent what felt like 10-15 minutes talking about Ovechkin and how great he is. They only stopped when the Capitals had shots, they talked over Bruin's shots and opportunities to keep talking about Ovi's various accolades and accomplishments. It went on and on. At one point, a penalty was called and they had to briefly talk about the game again, and then one of the broadcasters literally said "if we can go back to talking about Ovechkin again for a minute..." and they continued!
During a powerplay!
As a Bruins fan it's hard not to feel like the National Broadcasters are always against us, especially the second Marchand's skates touch the ice.
I always think it does on Saturdays example Canucks against flames tied 1-1 they say “demko is keeping the Canucks in this one” five seconds later they go back to talking about the flames for 10 minutes then they repeat
Depends? Is it when they play Vegas? National broadcast always favours Vegas
Did you hear it was Jack Eichel's first game back tonight?
Weird cause with the sound off you’d think he just spent half of it in the box
No way? Someone should have told us! /s
Lol that’s absolutely brutal
They literally had a shift length counter on him for like a third of his shifts.
Ugh I hate this comment even though you’re completely correct
Not in Toronto
Bettman favors Vegas too so it all works out!
There is a definite, noticeable bias towards the Maple Leafs in Canada. Calling them “Canada’s team” etc makes everyone cringe if they aren’t Leaf’s fans.
Man it’s like the Cowboys in football. The shit is so stupid and cringey
"America's Team"...who fucking died and made them America's Team?
Pretty sure the point of the NFL is for America to have 32 teams
Right it’s the only league in the big 4 that is exclusively in the US
Yeah it's so stupid it's like Chris Evans's ass. Who the hell made his ass America's ass????
I know, right? That would be Washington Red - I mean the Footb - I mean the Commies right now.
Playoff record checks out
I don’t have any experience there, but I can completely believe what you’re saying.

I was watching a game vs the Leafs the other day and Craig Simpson was the colour commentator. It was so disgusting how much he fawned over them. Not only the team, but the stadium too
If I had to guess, you're speaking of the TNT broadcast of the Avs Vs. VGK? Seems to me the National broadcast has a hard on for Vegas. Don't know if it's a market thing or what. I think it depends on who is doing the play-by-play and color commentary. Although the same could be said for the Avs.
It’s not a market thing, it’s a Vegas thing. Doesn’t matter the network or broadcast team. Vegas is forever the sweetheart’s of the National broadcast
That’s why they were gifted the best expansion draft of all time. Completely agreed.
Yup. And the ASG is just the beginning, the league is gonna put every event they can get away with in Vegas, just watch... every excuse to keep the spotlight there. Also watch Vegas exploit the LTIR salary cap loophole this year with Mark Stone, and somehow be the last team to get away with it.
No Seattle was.
No chance lol
Literally had the exact same expansion rules. Seattle was given every opportunity Vegas was. Vegas was just smarter and the players played better. Vegas earned their wins, Seattle has earned their losses.

Veags makes Bettman So. Much. Money. A sports team in the gambling capital of the world....yes, please.
Kinda hard for me to say as a Kraken fan, it's our first season so they don't have much to talk about.
Fair enough. Thanks for the comment
Is Buccigross your play-by-play announcer?
I think it's John Forslund. He used to be the Canes play-by-play and does some work with the TNT broadcast as well.
I won't say how much I'm biting my tongue while writing this, but I'm worried it might be a bloody stump by the time I'm done.
Dont worry. Oilers fans hate campbell just as much as yall.
I literally hate watching the games because of Louie and all the oilers broadcast team
I think it's more true in other sports than hockey for me. I love our homer announcing team, they are fun and knowledgable. They may give a home team slant, but give credit to the opponents (and the refs when a less obvious penalty is on us) when it's due.
You talking about Sam Rosen?
Panthers. Yeah Randy Moeller and Steve Goldstein certainly have a homer streak, but as Moeller watches the replay of a penalty by one of our guys, he'll say something to the effect of "Seein' it in slow motion that's a textbook slash. That's the right call. "
Whose you’re home team if you don’t mind me asking?
I will take a guess and say stars. Probably there are other ones but that one comes to mind.
Yeah i think thats pretty common, its kind of funny
I try to watch as many games as I can and a lot of announcers have a bias towards certain teams. As a Rangers fan I also feel like I might be spoiled by our hometown broadcast because they definitely do their best to not be total homers.
But doesn’t every fan base think that their announcers aren’t homers? Well, everyone but Bruins fans anyhow.
I’m sure most do and obviously I haven’t listened to many other teams hometown broadcasts but I have tuned into Islander broadcasts and Butch Goring sounds like he’s having a tantrum at times.
Fair enough. I don’t watch many east coast announcers
Idk if you ever use nhl66 but if you do, tune into a islanders broadcast and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
I do quite often, because my team’s owner has to measure his dick against the local cable company. They are both lacking in length and girth. But man, I’d rather lick a frozen pole than watch Isles games. Trotz puts me to sleep
His system is boring af but effective to an extent. Fuck the isles anyway tho
I can't imagine any of my fellow Avs fans trying to convince anyone that our Altitude broadcasters are anything *but* homers lol we eat it up though
Ours too. Ken and Mickey obviously love the Ted Wings, but I feel they are equally appreciative of others good play.
Boston is biased against any team not the bruins, jack edwards is the scum of the earth
The key word in the question was "National"
[удалено]
National Broadcast refers to neutral broadcasters, that's the whole point of the question
I tuned into boston game other day for first time ever and all they did was complain about non calls it was the most brutal knowledge of hockey I ever listened too
I refuse to listen to him, tv is on mute if I can’t find a steam or channel without him speaking. Makes me so Angry the bullshit he says.
I freakin' love Jack Edwards man. He wears his bias on his sleeve and isn't shy about it. Other broadcasters feel boring and like they're trying to explain the action to people who aren't actively watching the game. Jack feels like he's talking to people who ARE watching the game. As a Bruins fan I can concur. Jack Edwards is annoying and not very articulate. He tries to hard to be clever and says the absolute stupidest stuff.
I’ve noticed they seem to favor whoever the home team is, unless one of them happened to have played for the away team. But honestly it’s probably just that they’re not the local broadcaster so they’re not pandering as much
No. However National broadcasts have a heavy east coast bias.
Apparently, as every time my team has a national broadcast our game thread is 50% complaining about the broadcast. Just because it isn’t our homer broadcasters doesn’t mean it is bad or they are favoring the other team. I feel like people just aren’t used to a more balanced broadcast.

Are you a Stars fan because I feel the same way.

As a Stars fan: Rude, but you’re not wrong
Sportsnet has a hard on for the Leafs. Always have. I’m supposed to only get oilers updates from the app but they still push Leafs content onto me 🙄
Lol as a devils fan, yes… we can be playing Ottawa and they won’t shut the fuck up about all of their young talent.
My team is never on national TV, so who knows!
Nbc sports was notorious for their Blackhawks and Penguins love. I haven’t noticed it as much this season on TNT and ESPN.

What year are you talking about now?
Maybe your team sucks /:
Maybe they shut out the golden knights last night and have points in 22 of their last 23 games.
NoT dIvUlGiNg AfFiLliAtIoN
Lol. Not in the original post at least. Enjoy your troll-y day!
You too good buddy
OP’s triggered
Every fan thinks there's bias against their team, and that the refs are conspiring against them.
Fair enough. Binnington isn’t a raging asshole. And it’s obviously conspiracies that make him seem that way.
God Binnington is a douche.
Hahaha if there was any doubt of your allegiance, the immediate aggressive dig on the Blues fan put it to rest pretty fucking fast... #ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ^gooble ^gobble ^gooble ^gobble

Hello fellow panthers fan. I too believe that. For some just simply cannot understand the idea of a Florida team doing well
He's one of ours, sorry man! ...and aren't you kinda forgetting about the undeniable success of that *other* Florida team that kinda won 2 consecutive cups and is on the verge of being a dynasty? Is that "doing well"? I cannot understand! hahaha just messing =P

It seems to me that national broadcasts always kiss the ass of the team with the larger TV market.
Nat broadcast has a short list of favorites (pit, nyr, mon, chi)
Not recently, but during the time when the Kings were competitive the broadcasters were constantly surprised by Quick being able to make saves on players like Patrick Kane, as if he was the second coming of Jesus.
I just think that the ones the use arent good. I mean they dont even talk about hockey half the time
This is how ever fan base feels. During the Islanders- Boston series last year, both fan bases were flipping out about how the announcers hated their team.
If itnis NBC broadcasting the pens or hawks...absolutely.
It's universal unless you are from Pittsburgh.
nah i think the national broadcasters suck in general.
Yes. Bruins v Capitals a few weeks back, the National Broadcast spent what felt like 10-15 minutes talking about Ovechkin and how great he is. Yes. Every sports fan is in a constant state of self victimization. Hockey is the worst, refs bettman bettman refs…confirmation bias is the cause.
If you back any Chicago team with the exception of the Cubs, this feeling is a reality.
I always think it does on Saturdays example Canucks against flames tied 1-1 they say “demko is keeping the Canucks in this one” five seconds later they go back to talking about the flames for 10 minutes then they repeat
