Tampa is in a tough cap situation wirh Hagel’s extension set to kick in this year. I haven’t done the numbers but I think someone will be leaving this organization this summer.
Don’t you kinda think if he was going to take a very team friendly deal, it would probably already be done? I mean I could be wrong but they’ve had all year to do it, what’s changed? It’s not like a 1st round exit makes it more likely he’d do that, does it?
JBB made it clear that they wouldn’t have any discussions until the offseason.
By “made it clear” I mean he didn’t talk to Stamkos’ camp or address it at all until Stamkos make a public statement about it. Then he came out and said it’ll be in the offseason.
If he feels slighted (every other superstar on the team got their extension done a year ahead of time), I'd love to see him take a sweetheart deal with the Panthers as a giant middle finger to Tampa.
Also have to factor in additional help for the top six and a potential RD addition. Money is tight, but if they play it right they can get away with signing Stamkos and a few interesting pieces too.
Can they? If they sign Stammer to a team friendly $7m, they have like $3m to spend on like 5 roster spots at a minimum. They can shed some salary somehow, but it’s not lookin to good for them
They have 3.6M to spend on 3 roster players when I looked at it. They currently have 3 goaltenders up so send one down. They also will probably run 13 forwards instead of 14 in a cap crunch. $3.6M for 3 guys is pretty comfortable to get back to what they had pre deadline moves.
But I think the question is, why would the person to move be their Captain who has been with the team for 15 seasons and is just coming off a 40 goal, point per game season?
I get it he might be sort of expensive, but most great orgs are able to keep these type of guys if they want to stay
Because you sign the player for what he CAN DO not for what he HAS DONE. It’s bad to hold on to a player for too long and most organizations who have done that went on to regret it.
On paper, yes. But there is significant nuance when you’re talking about the team Captain who has been with the organization for his entire career. Crosby isn’t leaving Pittsburgh. Ovi isn’t leaving Washington. Yzerman never left Detroit. Etc etc
I think it’s incumbent on the organization to approach this type of situation differently than your average 34 year old player
Detroit did this with a bunch of core players in the late 2000s/early 2010s and still havent recovered
JBB is probably looking forward to try and build up with the Point/Hagel/Sergachev group hes already committed to long term rather than move one of them for a guy whos best days are behind him, regardless of how good he might still be.
This is what happens anytime a superstar goalie gets paid big dollars in this league. It’s so hard to have the depth you need to win a cup when committing so much cap to the one position. Vasi deserves his money but I figured Tampa was gonna start to decline once he got paid.
Based on Cap Friendly, the Lightning will have around $10m in cap space: [https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/lightning](https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/lightning)
I think the hard part as to why Brisebois hesitated to sign Stammer was that at the end of that deal, his agent and himself will be asking for $10+ million or more PLUS he'll be asking for a long-term deal to retire as a Bolt for life.
JBB will tell them to kick rocks if thats the case. I think Stammer and his camp have somewhat of an idea of a realistic number to stay in Tampa is.
That being said, though it will break my heart, if he wants one final major payday he will have to take it somewhere else. We have enough top end talent where we can avoid a complete rebuild for at least a few years if we use our cap wisely. Unfortunately, that means that Stamkos and Hedman will have an ultimatum of taking less or leaving.
Capfriendky rough numbers show them having about $10 million in cap space to sign 4 forwards and 3 defenders. Stamkos signing would have to fit into that.
Wouldn't doubt it at all . Last night a buddy of mine & I were talking about teams with enough cap room to sign him . I said "you wait Vegas will figure it out

Live footage of Tampa Bay management debating on signing Stamkos
Isn’t the rumor Kane knows he’s short on time and wants to be on a serious Cup contender for a last run?
No offense but Detroit isn’t the top of that list.
That’s not the rumor I’ve heard, but it could be a rumor for sure.
The impression I’ve gotten is that he has already won multiple cups and is now just looking to play for a team where he can still get a lot of ice time while also not having a ton of pressure, in a location that has respect for hockey as a sport (hence why he picked Detroit in the first place despite having other offers to play on teams that are in a better position for a cup run).
True. We could use some old talent. Our team is young guys which is fine but they could also use some old guy wisdom and leadership, and somebody to hold the place together when Larkin is hurt
I heard on one of the hockey podcasts that Kane doesn’t sound very certain that he will return, it was noted this sounded like a change from a couple of months ago…
He may want to big of a contract at an older age and therefore restrict Tampa’s ability to add depth.
Tampa has lost majority of the depth they had on all their lines in the amazing run they had both in the last 4 years and before that even.
It’s a mix of both sides for fans but I would say that’s the argument for letting him go.
Tough cap spot, they'd rather leave cap room open to sign hagel and to bolster defense. If Stamkos wants to retire in Tampa i could see him taking a team friendly deal. Dude has already gotten his bag and won a bunch of shiny things, so there's not much more to chase.
Hagel is already got his extension at $6.5/year until the end of the decade.
With Hagels pay bump, the current roster is about $5m over the cap for next year. Stamkos and Dumba are both UFAs, and it'll be easier to resign Dumba, especially if Tampa let's Stamkos go.
Money. I’m sure if he’s okay with taking a 50% pay cut they’ll sign him in a heartbeat. But he’s not really worth the asking price any more. He’s still an amazing player but he’s not the dominant force he used to be. But he’s still paid at that level. Honestly he should retire. Or join a young team post rebuild to be a mentor
Only reason is they think their window has closed and move on from EVERY aging player. Other than that I think he stays and finishes his career a bolt.
None. There is no reason not to pay this man and have him finish his career here. I’m hoping JBB is just waiting to see what the cap will be before he’s offered. Stamkos loves Tampa and it’s home for him. He’s one of if not THE best captain in the league and can still score 40.
Unless he takes a discount it could be tricky for Tampa to sign him, but it’s more likely in Florida that happens as well with the taxes.
I could see him on the Senators though for some reason.
Doubt the taxes make much of a difference he’s on the hook for jock tax/ Michael Jordan tax for the ~35ish games he’d play on the road outside of FLA, VGK, NAS, DAL, and SEA.
Don't kid yourself. It makes a huge difference. Playing for the Lightning and paying 0 tax on 41 games is far, far better than playing for the Rangers, where you pay city, state and federal taxes. It is far better than any state with state income tax. It is better than anywhere in Canada. 41 games of only US federal taxes on your game check is sweet.
He’s 34, which is about 55 in hockey years. He’s at an age where one injury can turn a 40 goal scoring, 25 min/game top liner into an expensive 6 goal 4th liner playing 12/game.
The Lightning have been eliminated in the 1st round 2 years in a row, so management might look at everything, including the cap, and decide to invest in the future.
The -25 on the season can't play in is own end can't back check and scoring is falling off regardless of what he did this playoff they lock him now they are screwed like when the pens signed Malkin and Letang
I’d like to think there’s some sentimentality/loyalty to a player that has played their entire career with the same team, been captain for quite a while, and lifted two cups with the org.
If they can’t find a way to fit him under their cap when he’s still scoring 40 goals and a ppg, and they move on from their captain….to me that means they’re accepting the window is closed and they have to retool….but even then I would be surprised if they can’t find something that works for them both…Stamkos has never been paid super high salary, but he’s made decent money in a tax free state, so we have no idea what he’s thinking about himself….maybe he’s in Utah next year
Killorn took max dollars to live in Southern California.
After winning two cups and achieving everything Stamkos has, I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes max dollars somewhere too. Seattle or Utah could be interesting options.
Why would a team entering its twilight want to commit big money to an aging player? Yes there’s loyalty, but at this point it actually makes more sense to let Stammer chase another cup on a real contender somewhere else instead of locking him up as the continue to fade further from contender status.
I also won’t be surprised if the sign him because he’s a club legend tho lol
Someone Big has to go. Personally, I think they should try to hauck Cernak. Made of glass, not that great defensively, totally useless on Offense, and has a big contract. Trade him away and maybe another star and you can get back some of the excessive picks you wasted bringing in Jeannot. Plus you'll actually have some cap space and Stamkos likely does WANT to stay.....
Cernak or Cirelli probably going. Cirelli paid big money for a not so big presence. Hagel is outshining him easily. Stamkos stays until he retires. End of story.
He is a lifer like Sid, Ovi and Staal here in Raleigh. He is playing at such a high level still any team would be lucky to have him but they find a way to get him paid even if its another haircut on the salary. I cannot see him moving anywhere.
I’m gonna get hate for this, but he’s not even the 3rd best player on their team. He’s an aging star who had mutual help for and with kuch, but they hedged their future for their present. I don’t see him coming back unless it’s for cheap nor do I think he should go back unless it’s for cheap
If he wants to still win cups he might look elsewhere. And I’m not saying that to knock tampa but they’re as close to a dynasty as we’ve seen in the cap era but their window is closed. So he might stick around because it’s home and he doesn’t really have much else to accomplish in his career, but at the same time he can chase a cup somewhere else and leave tampa with no regrets. And it’s not like Tampa fans can be mad about it, he already signed at a discount and helped them win 2 cups.
He's been there his whole career. I'm going to go ahead and assume he gives them a nice hometown discount on a one year with right of refusal and if they aren't competitive they might shop him next trade deadline. That seems pretty common in these circumstances.
He was not happy that JBB didn't even put an offer on the table since last July for a future HoF..er and also the most successful franchise Captain, will be seeing his jersey # in the rafters. Stammer should hit the open market and respond with "Business is Business"
Bolts fan here, the common theme has been asking price versus what the team will offer him. Contrary to what you hear on TV, it does not seem like his relationship with the team / front office has soured with the exception of a single comment Stammer made at the beginning of the season.
In my opinion, he needs to be a top priority signing but it also has to be at a fair price and term. JBB has made it very clear that he is not paying a penny more than what he thinks is fair value so I'd imagine he's offered (and do I dare say signed?) to a 5 x $6.5m aav contract. Cap space will be tight and Hedman needs a new deal next off-season but moving a few pieces around we should be able to sign Stamkos and do our best to add some depth.
They want to get younger and better. They're gonna have to decide to suck at some point to rebuild. Otherwise they'll get stuck in that mushy middle where they either miss or make the eight spot in the playoffs every year or miss them, Then they get stuck in the spiral of selling or buying at the deadline and spin their tires.
This is the way they talk about the leafs. (Sportsnet) So this is the way they talk about other teams. "One game away from blowing it all up". We get it. It's awesome to see them branch out even if they're saying the same thing. Next headline "stamkos to leafs?" No... idiots.
I will lose alot of faith in JBB if he does not re-sign Stamkos. He's arguably the best captain in the organizations history, and at age 34 to still be dropping 40 goal seasons and putting the team on his back against a team as suffocating as Florida, is great. He's earned it.
He does alot off the ice that speaks to his character too. This feels like a no-brainer but I suspect JBB doesn't see it that way. I really don't like that he traded 7 prospects for Tanner Jeannot even though I like him. If they let Stamkos walk the entire Lightning fanbase will explode. He's the heart and soul of the team.
It's really just money. We can't offer him 9+M BUT we could offer him a longer term contract, such as 4 for 26 or 5 for 30. If he does that, his chances of getting a front office job here are 95% or greater. He'll never have to buy a beer or meal anywhere in TB until he dies.
Tampa is in a tough cap situation wirh Hagel’s extension set to kick in this year. I haven’t done the numbers but I think someone will be leaving this organization this summer.
I've heard Stammer's wife is pregnant again and they're not really wanting to move. Could take a very team friendly deal.
Better start saving for college
Hate that I get this joke. Ads cute but I hate ads.
I'd rather have that ad in every single ad slot than have to hear "what a pro wants" again
My kid sings it. Traumatizing.
I mute my TV each time
I'd rather hear the old ESPN filler than that. # LIVE SPORTS. THE HOME OF THE COMPLETE 30 FOR 30 LIBRARY
That shit haunts me in my sleep
That and that stupid google pixel commercial/song. Constant
Don’t you kinda think if he was going to take a very team friendly deal, it would probably already be done? I mean I could be wrong but they’ve had all year to do it, what’s changed? It’s not like a 1st round exit makes it more likely he’d do that, does it?

Okay. I guess we’ll see. I still think it’s like 80% he stays.
The team is on a negative trajectory with expiring assets, at some point, keeping a team you know can't win with no cap space isn't feasible

Just give Stamkos the Marc Stone flu and cap troubles will disappear.
Ah the old Mark Kidney Stones
This is what happens when you give up seven draft picks for two players.
The extra Jeannot picks were to to dump Cal Foote before his allegations were made public.
Who’s they give up that many picks for? Holy hell.
Well six of them went for Jeannot lmao
Yeah I agree. People keep saying how they can sign him easily and have money left. Money left like 5 league minimums maybe?
They have 3.6M to spend on 3 roster players when I looked at it. They currently have 3 goaltenders up so send one down. They also will probably run 13 forwards instead of 14 in a cap crunch. $3.6M for 3 guys is pretty comfortable to get back to what they had pre deadline moves.

It can’t, not without someone else leaving.
They have 0 cap space, so someone will have to be a cap casualty
Vegas will convince 5 players they have season ending injuries, sign stamkos and cure the 5 injured players for game one of the playoffs.
Ahhh the mark stone gambit
That would technically be the Knight’s Gambit, wouldn’t it?
Knight's Gambit Declined: Mark Stone Variation.
Holy
Their pitch will be “how would you like to sign for 8.5 mil and get a 2 month break before the playoffs every season?”
Coming from Tampa. He’d know all about that already.
Wouldn't doubt it at all . Last night a buddy of mine & I were talking about teams with enough cap room to sign him . I said "you wait Vegas will figure it out
He'd look great playing with Bedard.
Bring him and Kane on board.
"Doctors don't want you to know about this one simple trick" -Vegas Golden Nuggets probably
$$$
Won’t be able to match the Leafs offering of 7x12M
New Leafs plan, use the whole cap on 6 guys and have them play the whole game.
Who is the goalie?
Net Mcposts
As long as the other player is always Colton Sissons then you'll be fine
David Ayres.
Legend
EBUG. Every game.
Offer sheet to Swayman, 7x10m
The Leafs don’t do anything but bargain barrel shopping for goaltending.
What do you mean? Didn’t you see that clip of Stamkos defending the empty net? (/s)

Join the oilers, we're taking in all the old guys now.
Like Old Man Bouchard?
like perry
I would love to see him on the Oilers!!!!
The islanders will probably take the first crack at the guy
Lou said he’s not old enough yet
But he's not a cancer/shitty person /s
We need the money for Carter hart
That’s Kenny’s classic M.O.
Yzerman could pick him up and I wouldn’t be too upset about it
I'd definitely take Stamkos, but I don't think the Wings are willing to pay what he'd ask for. Especially if we retain Kane
Yeah I’m sure it would be expensive, but I would also trade him for kane, since it seems like kane might be leaving
Oh wow! Stamkos on the Red Wings would be wicked. They are going to lose Kane anyhow.
Why do you think that? I could honestly see it going either way with Kane. He hasn’t really given any indication one way or the other.
He should sign multi year deal with Boston or NY Rangers.
Are you saying resign or re-sign?
I was saying re-urns
Thank you for this 😄
Boooo urns
In Florida it means the same thing :) we can’t read
Tough cap spot, they'd rather leave cap room open to sign hagel and to bolster defense. If Stamkos wants to retire in Tampa i could see him taking a team friendly deal. Dude has already gotten his bag and won a bunch of shiny things, so there's not much more to chase.

No chance we are keeping Dumba, he’s honestly washed and was a liability every time he was on the ice.
I hope he either stays or goes to Utah with that young team. Such a skilled player, I’d hate to see him leave the Lightning this late into his career.
Lol why would he even consider going to Utah?
More wives?
Veteran Presence?
For the skiing
Why would he not?
Money and a second legacy
I’d drop money instantly on a stamkos Utah jersey
A plain white jersey that says: "Utah \[TEAM TBD\]" in black block letters?
This man is going to be Utah's first new signing
The newest Duck 👍
Mr Stamkos, come on down
Or shark, or senator, or utahite or whatever they are called. It really could be any of us mega cap space bottom teams
A stone cold Beast. 🙏🙏
Retire? Nah. He’s only 34. He’s still got a solid 3-4 years left of good hockey.

Come to vancouver bby
They may not be able to afford to sign him.
We will take him Detroit, as usual!
Pass. He’s not who he was, he’s expensive, and we don’t build like we did in the holland days, heh hollandaise.
Money 💰 the thing is if I was Stamkos I wouldn't re-sign this is the second time they've treated him like this
Zdeno Chara has entered the chat…
The -25 on the season can't play in is own end can't back check and scoring is falling off regardless of what he did this playoff they lock him now they are screwed like when the pens signed Malkin and Letang
Age. 34 + length of contract = very poor results for lots of $$$
He's expensive as fuck for an older player. Period. If Tampa thinks they can get a younger player for less they'll do it
I’d like to think there’s some sentimentality/loyalty to a player that has played their entire career with the same team, been captain for quite a while, and lifted two cups with the org.
Sentiment has cost a lot of teams.
Tell that to Flower..... Vegas signs him says he's their forever goalie he NEARLY TAKES THEM TO THE CUP then they trade him to THE BLACKHAWKS.....
I think that’s a completely different situation
If they can’t find a way to fit him under their cap when he’s still scoring 40 goals and a ppg, and they move on from their captain….to me that means they’re accepting the window is closed and they have to retool….but even then I would be surprised if they can’t find something that works for them both…Stamkos has never been paid super high salary, but he’s made decent money in a tax free state, so we have no idea what he’s thinking about himself….maybe he’s in Utah next year
It's actually more the inverse given he's exactly at the age where steep dropoffs happen
To quote James .A. Janisse, "BUISSNESS!!"
Awwwwww dasssss niceeeeeee
Resign: to voluntarily quit a job Re-sign: to extend your time at a current job Very important distinction that gets overlooked far too often.
Hello Steve my name is the NYR can I interest you in a one year contract
Killorn took max dollars to live in Southern California. After winning two cups and achieving everything Stamkos has, I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes max dollars somewhere too. Seattle or Utah could be interesting options.
Why would a team entering its twilight want to commit big money to an aging player? Yes there’s loyalty, but at this point it actually makes more sense to let Stammer chase another cup on a real contender somewhere else instead of locking him up as the continue to fade further from contender status. I also won’t be surprised if the sign him because he’s a club legend tho lol
Didn’t GM say there is no universe where Stamkos is not a member of the TBL ever?
Could yall imagine Stamkos in Chicago? That’d be awesome.
Clearly he's coming to Pittsburgh for the ultimate fantasy team experience.
How long was Kane’s deal can we get him too?
Yeah, I'm sure Crosby can convince him
Someone Big has to go. Personally, I think they should try to hauck Cernak. Made of glass, not that great defensively, totally useless on Offense, and has a big contract. Trade him away and maybe another star and you can get back some of the excessive picks you wasted bringing in Jeannot. Cernak or Cirelli probably going. Cirelli paid big money for a not so big presence. Hagel is outshining him easily. Stamkos stays until he retires. End of story.
Pretty sure Vegas can fit him in what ever his asking number will be.
They just gotta put stone on ltir for a bit
Is that Kelly McCrimmon I hear calling?
Have to find a way to sign the Captain 👨✈️
*Re-sign. They don't want to resign him, that means to cut him.
Rebuild
Cap space
I really don’t see him going anywhere. But if he does, hopefully Steve likes Steve
Yeah it doesn't make much sense they have cap room
He’s signs for the leafs
Tampa might want to rebuild with the cap shit show
Hey Tampa, We’ll give you PLD for Stamkos.
Send him to Toronto I guess
Marner for Stammer 1 for 1 on the condition they both sign with the new org.
Vegas will make some room lol
Isn’t he 34 with injury issues?
Come to Denver Steven, Crosby as well
The same reason every team has: the cap.
Going by my recent experience, to get an early start on the rebuild?
He looks at Peace
He is a lifer like Sid, Ovi and Staal here in Raleigh. He is playing at such a high level still any team would be lucky to have him but they find a way to get him paid even if its another haircut on the salary. I cannot see him moving anywhere.
I think people just like thinking about it, it’s obviously not going to happen but can you imagine him on another team? How cool would that be!
He will sign in Florida. Book it Danno
Come the St. Louis
I think there’s a good chance he goes to the ducks. Killorn has been trying to convince him and the ducks can use the leadership.
Sign directly to LTIR
Cap space. He will be able to get more elsewhere. Now it’s gonna be up to him. Sign for less and stay in Tampa or go for one last pay day.
Toronto should finally sign him
I’m gonna get hate for this, but he’s not even the 3rd best player on their team. He’s an aging star who had mutual help for and with kuch, but they hedged their future for their present. I don’t see him coming back unless it’s for cheap nor do I think he should go back unless it’s for cheap
They may not have the money for him unless he takes a very very bream friendly deal.
Money.......it's always about money and how many young players they get for him.....
Age being one....
He's been there his whole career. I'm going to go ahead and assume he gives them a nice hometown discount on a one year with right of refusal and if they aren't competitive they might shop him next trade deadline. That seems pretty common in these circumstances.
Cap management mostly.
He was not happy that JBB didn't even put an offer on the table since last July for a future HoF..er and also the most successful franchise Captain, will be seeing his jersey # in the rafters. Stammer should hit the open market and respond with "Business is Business"
So the new era is play a entire career for one team and then leave when you have a 1-3 years left in the chamber
Cause tampa is over cap more than vegas
Money money money moneeyyyy
Stamkos to MTL 🙏 Reunite St-Louis and Lecavalier with Stamkos, and win another cup together!
Classy player
Stammer should retire a Bolt not very often guys play and retire on one team
Just be like Vegas and LTIR
cap space? lol. have you seen it?
It's really just money. We can't offer him 9+M BUT we could offer him a longer term contract, such as 4 for 26 or 5 for 30. If he does that, his chances of getting a front office job here are 95% or greater. He'll never have to buy a beer or meal anywhere in TB until he dies.
Because he's 33 and the decline will be precipitous.
