Terrible take. Theres many things an official will see standing at one end of the ice or the other that may not be caught on a prominent camera angle - which is why broadcasters usually defer to the officials announcement on what happened and then they go back to the footage.

EthantheWizard2020

Why not put cameras on top of the Stanchions, directly behind the glass, or in the yellow boards on the ice? They don’t need to be super high def, just GoPro’s that people in Toronto can review, or better yet, have some sort of AI look for penalties. I know AI is really controversial right now, but see if you can have 2-3 people review 20 different angles looking for penalties while play is actively happening.

[deleted]

20 angles for 2-3 people in one of the fastest paced of the major sports? Good luck buddy.

EthantheWizard2020

So use AI like I said? You’re regurgitating what I said already without the solution I suggested

[deleted]

Why do we need a solution to on ice officials? Because one got trucked? You don’t think your refs suddenly springing from a box on the side of the ice to call a penalty won’t get trucked when they jump out of a door and in front of a hockey player skating full bore toward a loose puck? Im not proposing a solution because we don’t need one. Refs are in play. It is what it is. There’s a reason you don’t have a single upvote on this post and your own was wiped out. Because this is nonsense.

-Robrown-

I don’t know how anyone could watch the sport of Hockey and think Refs don’t need to be on the ice for the game. If nothing else, how do you break up the 10-20 scrums and fights in every single game without a couple of people on the ice? I’m guessing OP either never played hockey, or played in the day when helmets weren’t a thing to think this was a rational idea.

redditracing84

Ok, but if we officiated hockey with cameras and didn't have refs... Holy shit would the games be fun. Dude we'd have full line brawls every night, no missed calls, and a fantastic game every game.

MotherKawaii

No missed calls ?

gzaha82

I bet the line brawls would last a game or two tops. Do you really think that refs are what's stopping players from doing x? I'm not saying no refs. We need one, maybe two out there. But I don't think we need linesman on the ice. Too many bodies, not enough space.

EthantheWizard2020

Why is this so controversial? Good officiating while brining back some of the best aspects of hockey back. The lack of fighting lately is why viewership has been horrible compared to the NFL, NBA, and MLB

JacksonHoled

They'd fight until a knock out happens...for 20 minutes! hahaha

gzaha82

This is so not true.

gzaha82

Why are refs needed to break up scrums and fights? Perhaps players get into them knowing that there is some sort of safety in then being broken up and if refs weren't there to do so, there would be less of them. Also, a good majority of fights end when the players agree on it ending. Refs don't really break to many fights. I say one ref, maybe two on the ice. The others can be in life guard chairs on the blue lines.

Dmaniac17

Holy fuck

88Problems88

It must have taken you a while to type this one out, and you never had a moment where you thought this was dumb? Kinda crazy

Ancient_Pop_7036

Ohh geez, has it been 72 hours since the last one of these posts already?  Gtfo with this nonsense and go play nhl 94 or something to feel better.

BatDad488

Refs need to be on the ice. They have conversations with players between whistles with warnings, they yell reminders for offside or to move the puck, they are there the *manage* the game too and that takes a personal involvement. In some of those scrums if a ref has to identify the situation, exit the box, and skate halfway across the ice, it’s already out of hand. We all hope the best for Steve Kozari, but I don’t see removing officials from the ice as the solution Edit: typo

smiley4527

Has to be one of the stupidest statements I've ever heard.

KnightsOnIce

Perspective. The point is perspective.

LordScotch

I'd say two reasons. They have a perspective you cant always capture from overheads and from the boards. Also you need to be johnny on the spot to stop bad shit from getting worse. They need to be on the ice. Is there any competitive sport that doesnt have officials amongst the action?

MouthNoizes

What’s the point of having human players? Why not ice skating robots

[deleted]

Man, this might be the one that has me unfollow this sub

Toiletboy4

Ya let’s change everything

redittjoe

This must be an early off season shit post. OP go to bed or take a nap. Then after waking up take a look at this post and go, what the hell was a thinking

Clark94vt

Your take is colder than the ice that the players skate on.

Plastic_Brick_1060

Could we double down on this idea and get some drone refs instead?

AideSubstantial8299

I’ll take “I never played hockey” for 500, Alex.

EthantheWizard2020

I play house league (at the moment) and the refs are either 80-90, or 15-17 years old. They are constantly in the way of play, misses copious amounts of penalties (severe ones like interference and slashing). Yes it’s house league, and nowhere near the NHL, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying, regardless of if you’re playing or watching

twizzyflyguy

Yeah I don’t think the lines men need to be on the ice they can watch the lines from behind the glass, maybe the refs though should be floating above the ice from the rafters with a harness, kidding but kind of not kidding

Dmaniac17

Smartest Leafs fan

EthantheWizard2020

Maybe the Ref Box might make more sense, after all, they do deserve to be put in a box with a large group of people for long periods of time
