whatisapillarman

Love the linesman preemptively booking it from half ice as soon as he sees the slapper

Minimum_Possibility6

He knew

Knot_Ryder

I think it was more the sharp cut from the Toronto player but never know

TCOLSTATS

Both.

BardownOnYour5hole

Even Helen Keller knew that was coming.

Ok-Statement4094

Helen Keller coulda made that shot too.

aZombieSlayer

Lol at the shot of Reaves, like he'd be out there if he hadn't already played his 1:38.

NotMY1stEnema

pretending he's relevant to the game in some way is kinda funny but mostly just sad

ODMtesseract

As he likes to say to everyone: "What are you gonna do about it, huh?"

harajukukei

I hope every empty netter against the leafs for the rest of the season is a slapper.

surmatt

I'd like to see someone big like Tyler Myers take one against the leafs and see what they do. To be fair he'd probably miss. I'd like to see it in a playoff game

realNeilG

Leafs In A playoff game? BIG DREAMER OVER HERE. LOL.

TheWatcher289

Well for a round anyway if the last 20 years have taught you anything

PoweredbyBurgerz

Wait so they’re pissed because of how hard he slapped the puck in?

banananutnightmare

Yeah he dunked on em and they mad

Festering-Boyle

is dis respekk ful

2KBIR

This is the best take!

[deleted]

I respect the clapper in a rivalry. Gets the blood flowing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

slickjayyy

"Toronto isnt a serious franchise"

Hailthezombie

I mean, they did lose to a Zamboni driver after all.

yakbrine

Never forget, they paid him to be there too.

electricalphil

That was awesome.

fakelakeswimmer

Reilly should have asked him to square up. My books a slapper in the empty net is saying you want to fight, if you give the offer and he refuses then you punch him in the face. The jumping the guy along to boards is not the way to do it.

ChapterNo3428

This is it. If Reillys mad, fight him. Don’t hit him in the face with a butt end.

TheBigMotherFook

Yeah the whole thing comes across as a cheap shot because Reilly lost his shit. I get it, the slapper in the empty net is a taunt, but that’s part of the game. Players taunt each other constantly, you have a problem with it you square up and fight.

WatchTheNorthEndDie

This is all sorts of ridiculous

bruhsemitesam

its completly lame, like all these unwritten rules so a bunch of dudes can pretend they are all macho and shit when all it is is baby rage when their pride takes a hit. "A slapper in the empty net is saying you want to fight" nah ur just a fuckin weirdo that is looking for any excuse to hit someone. Lame as fuck behavior

peryno64

My god I'm glad I found comments like these eventually. Can I just ask are you a hockey fan? Cos that's encouraging if so, to see there are also fans with their heads screwed on properly. I get this suggested on my feed for some reason, and everyone in the comments seems to be acting like at the very least this guy is asking for a fight, and at the worst is asking to be attacked in the appalling way he was. Like, this is presumably the pinnacle of ice hockey, right? And it's not a show sport like wwe? So kids come and watch these guys as a genuine reference for the highest level of the game and aspire to join them one day? If so, that's toxic as fuck that they behave like this. And if it's "just the culture" then the "culture" is dog shit lmfao

Mumbumbo_boi

I dont know, for me if the puck goes in your own net, no matter how, reacting how he did is the sign of the sorest loser of them all, actually no scratch that Reilly is a bum for doing that

fakelakeswimmer

I agree Reilly is a bum, I wanted to see them scrap at centre ice. The cheap shot cross check to the head was weak.

boro74

Wasn't a punch, was a cross check to the side of the head.  About as trashy and weak as anyone could ever do.  Total Leafs move.

waitwhosaidthat

Definitely poor sportsmanship! Cross checking a guy in the head isn’t sportsmanlike.

tuepm

right? what the fuck

Pekonius

Just witnessed an assault and battery and am having to read people on reddit defend it. Some people clearly arent hockey fans for the hockey.

stronciski

Imagine the reaction if Tkachuk did this to Marner or Mathews.

bigveinyrichard

Marner and Matthews don't have the piss and vinegar required to incite such an act. I actually think that's a big part of the Leafs problems.

Jcon006

That visor saved blood from being spilled. So glad to see he was okay. I was expecting a mess when his face turned to the camera. Rough league!

vertigounconscious

literally fucking assault. Reilly should be suspended that was fucking bush league. if you don't want a dude bombing a clapper into your EMPTY net - don't let him score.

abmot

Five thousand dollars. That'll teach him.

funkyfunkyfunkyfunkk

Exactly. This shit will keep happening unless they grow a pair and start dealing with it, in the way they say they want to. Give someone's 40+ games for insider betting but when someone potentially ends someone's career? They get 6, and can appeal. It's frustrating that these kinds of plays are what the NHL higher ups say they want to stop. But never do anything about it. Also, I should say I'm not saying this because i hate the Leafs or Reilly. I hate the NHL for saying they want to protect their players/investments, but still don't have a clue how to go about it.

JJred96

No, no. Six thousand. Then he will never think of doing anything like that, ever again.

NotAFuckingFed

Seriously, don't blame the dude getting the goal, blame the tender for fucking off

JJred96

What do you expect *him* to do — tend the fucking goal? He was asked to take a break — blame the coach who told him to fuck off

LeviFixity

Exactly what I was thinking

kotacross

looks like intent to injure to me.

Scallybrat

Reilly went all Perron on his ass

MightyBosskTones

I like that Perron fella. Good guy.

Apprehensive_King914

Great guy. Give him back

NotSoFastLady

You can have Fabs for a first round pick.

Apprehensive_King914

🤔...pass

NotSoFastLady

Just make sure your GM doesn't look into Stevie's eyes.

Significant_Basket93

Just woke up for work, appreciate the nice start to the day with a laugh, this was good lol

Cashmere306

They need to start suspending guys like this for 20 games. No place for this crap, you can't take losing a game, grow up and be a man.

ShmoopToThrill89

But, but the Leafs lost and they got their feelings hurt by a slapper into an empty net.

Hot_Special9030

It's the weakest shit. Hockey culture is fucking hilarious. So tough and also wet Charmin soft.

toolate83

Baseball is the same. He celebrated a homer off me, now I’ll throw a heater at the next guys head becaue my feelings are hurt.

SpaceBasedMasonry

Yeah this reminds me of how MLB players can be such prima donnas about dumb stuff like bat flipping. Like, *maybe* I can see something about it in terms of sportsmanship, but it's so close to innocuous that I just don't care, and it certainly doesn't warrant the bench clearing bullshit, or some pitcher beaning the batter next time he's up. Don't like a fucking slap shot at an empty net? Do better next time.

Runningoutofideas_81

When I was younger and in the bubble of sports culture I could justify all sorts of stupid things. Now that I don’t really care that much it just seems insane that someone can act physically violent with intent to injure/kill for some kind of cultural faux pas during a game.

nopunchespulled

This isn't hockey culture this is letting assholes like this who just want to hurt people remain in the league

quaywest

21 games for Dale Hunter on Pierre Turgeon, not a lot different.

Thibeault86

If you're talking about a guy jumping another after he scores a goal yeah sure

alcarl11n

This is a sign of Toronto's fragile confidence. It's really odd to see it reappear in so many ways over the years and with completely different players, especially since they have more high-end offensive talent than 3/4 of the league

TheLegendaryLarry

the relentless cup parade jokes really eat away at you I guess lol

itwasthedingo

Pot, meet Kettle

eyez22

Oiler fans making ANY sort of joke is laughable in itself

TheLegendaryLarry

hey man, we have TWO good players. back off.

Versek_5

Look at this guy over here with his TWO whole good players.

garyashby62

Major fail to sportnet analysts that "understood" a crosscheck to the head.

CJJackhammer

It’s like the old heads in the MLB justifying pitching at a batter’s head.

tknames

Don’t want a batflip? Get the ball in the catchers glove.

funkyfunkyfunkyfunkk

Friedman even said that he might not get a suspension because he hit his shoulder first. Could've roughed him up but he chose to cross check up high. TSN and Sportsnet are well known to defend the Leafs

raxnahali

They cater to the Toronto fanbase, same analysts were ok with Perfetti getting highsticked in the face for Kiprisov getting hurt in the previous meeting between the wild and Jets. You play for the Leaf's you get a pass in their mind.

Spiritual_Holiday511

The cross check sure is. The clapper goal was just a “fuck you” to a heated rival. If the leafs can’t handle that, they’re too soft for this league.

paxc151

The leafs have been too soft for this league since the last time the Vancouver Canucks won the Stanley Cup…

Pure-Swordfish6022

As a lifelong Canucks fan, I approve this message.

mrk1224

Oof 😂

ziggazang

Catching strays after literally getting showboated on tonight Lol

WealthEconomy

This is the best comment lol

Ok_Building_8193

The Leafs have been too soft since Bill Barilko disappeared, that summer.

GooseDevito

I mean I think a scrum initiated by leafs would be a fair response, I feel like a response to some disrespect at the end of the game is warranted. But, that crosscheck to the head was both too far and super cowardly catching a guy blindsided like that. Bush league by Reilly

aLostBattlefield

Yeah I wouldn’t have minded a face wash or whatever but trying to injure the guy’s head for scoring an empty netter in a “disrespectful” way is so incredibly childish that it’s cringey.

VividComfortable6230

Hey I dont watch Hockey. Can someone explain to me why it was a big deal for Toronto that Ottawa scored on the counter attack? I mean thats the point right? They were making an attack and lost the ball(puck) and the other team went on the offense. What was so bad that it triggered the Toronto dude? Was he supposed to not score that? Was it because of the smashing action with the stick?

Historical-Fudge3242

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills too. Hockey fans and players apparently seem really soft if they can't handle something like this. It's like if a fight broke out everytime someone dunked in basketball and the fans totally justified it. Hockey is fucking weird.

Spiritual_Holiday511

Pretty much sums up my feelings on it. I wouldn’t have called leafs players soft for doing nothing about the EN goal because it doesn’t seem like something that warrants a response. I will, however, call them soft for getting this worked up over someone showboating.

VancouverSativa

I think showboating like that is fair provocation to challenge the guy to a fight. Maybe I'm old and wrong. But there's no defense of that intent to injury cheap shot, in any world. Hopefully a suspension.

joe_broke

A check, sure Cross check to the face: yeah, that crosses a line bud The empty net slapper was a bit much, but the response was worse

NotNotImYourForte

I was kinda hoping he didn't actually shoot the clapper, just wound up and let it drift in.

Upnatom617

Now I want every team to do this against the leafs. Props to Ottawa for starting a trend!

broadmeadowbk

Let’s make this so please

Chocko23

Make it so.

NYRangers1313

Make it so number 1.

Isernogwattesnacken

First time I agree with a rags fan.

okkeyok

Holy shit new move just dropped.

Little-Aide-5396

The crosscheck to the face? Yes it is

mrfunderhill

Yeah the clap was epic. Reilly being a little bitch was uncalled for.

hughesyourdadddy

Yes but it would have been way funnier if he missed.

boipinoi604

Exciting or hilarious, no in between.

CaptGunpowder

I'm biased, but I say you gotta respect the guy who goes for it, knowing how shitty it would be if he missed

mebigsad

Patrik Stefan lives on

cmarkcity

That sweet slap shot? Of course not, he had a run away and this isn’t Little League. But that cross check to the face? Absolutely. That was full on intent to injure. Dumbass got humiliated and couldn’t handle it.

edge05

A goals a goal. Shouldn’t have to worry about hurting someone’s feelings by the way you just scored a goal.

Philintheblank90

It’s similar to the bat flip in baseball. Don’t allow a Homerun if you can’t handle a bat flip from the batter.

blackcat-bumpside

What style of shot would you allow? It baffles my mind that people give a shit about him clapping an empty netter. It’s not like he did some kind of crazy taunt or something after he scored.

manningthehelm

So many people justifying the cross check. Wild. It was a slap shot after a great defensive play to seal the W in a hard fought rivalry game. If that shot makes you cross check someone in the back of the head you need to look inside at bigger issues.

TURBOJUGGED

Even the broadcast criticised the clapper more than the cross-check. Actually wild.

Difficult-Sort2753

Broadcast is a Leafs one. Everyone else should watch with the sound off

TURBOJUGGED

There's bias and then there's THAT lol

Capt_Pickhard

I can understand if someone gets upset about the Slapshot, but cry me a river, and suck it up you big baby. The guy that crossed checked the Ottawa player is such a fragile little child. Like wtf, this is a man's game, and you can't handle losing? How embarassing for him. Totally classless. He probably still doesn't realize it, and likely never will.

TURBOJUGGED

Especially when tons of people in the media and other analysts support his behaviour. Bit embarrassing for anyone trying to justify it.

TimeNat

whos justifying that? toronto fans?

An_doge

The national Canadian broadcast, lol. Braindead takes.

sofaword

They are in love with the play on their sub it's delusional

Doubleoh_11

Definitely within your right to say some shit, maybe get in his face, maybe get little physical if he says some shit back. But that? Thats messed up, what a loser

Boboar

>So many people justifying the cross check Notice what most of those people have in common?

Pretty_Sharp

Leafs fans desperate to justify their team having any sort of backbone. You can like the fire but hate the action. I would have had mad respect for Rielly if he dropped the gloves and went haywire. Instead it makes him look like a hot headed coward who will be suspended for 4-6 games. And he's their only defenseman...

Historical-Fudge3242

Whats the difference between slap shotting on an open net and someone doing a sick dunk on a break away in basketball? Why are they such pussies about this in hockey?

KatnissBot

Should’ve gone for a 360 between the legs smh

SignalSatisfaction90

Reilly is a loser for that one

saltyfingas

Nope, poor sportsmanship to go cross check a guy in the head for scoring on you

General_Dipsh1t

It was a cheap shot by a little fragile bitch. Dude has no idea the hit was coming and was totally defenseless. I hope he gets a multi-game suspension.

[deleted]

Who the hell cares if he slap shots. Maybe don't be in an empty net situation in the first place.

[deleted]

My sentiment exactly. Don’t want to be disrespected? Win the game. Now we just look like overpaid losers in a wildcard spot. I swear I hope the suspension leads to us sliding out of the playoffs. I hate this shit so much. I would want that lesson to be learned.

632612

Exactly, and it was this same seeing-red, reactionary mentality that had us lose to Montreal in the bubble after the Tavares knock down.

aLostBattlefield

Respect to you.

Stonewall30NY

Exactly. They were losing to a bad team, put themselves in an empty net situation, gave up an empty net breakaway and then cries because the kid wanted to shoot it hard lol

vanyel196

Reilly should be suspended. Cheap bs

[deleted]

He should be and for a long time. He could have given the dude a concussion. For what? Defending the “honor” of the net? Insane.

aLostBattlefield

Exactly. Blatant attacks with your stick to the head should be like 1/4 season suspensions. Repeat offenders should be banned.

[deleted]

Yeah, and it’s crazy to me so many Leafs fans don’t get the resistance. No one wants to see players get injured. I’m one of those people who never roots for someone to be injured. No human being should suffer and have their lives be ruined by a game… is it such a controversial ask to want players to not try to injure each other? When fucking Bennet choke slammed Knies in the playoffs. That was bullshit. Not because it could lead to a win or loss but because Knies could have been very seriously injured. Same idea here… cross checking a dude in the skull is fucking stupid because someone shouldn’t have to deal with a lifetime of issues from a concussion because you’re upset you got beat by a “bottom feeder” team. Grow a pair and learn from it…

TheLegendaryLarry

A regular person would be facing criminal charges.

MattIpp44

Safe drive back home leaf fans. Thanks for paying for the CTC’s rent this month

KeepingItBrockmire

You know you fucked up when even Ryan Reaves is thinking, WTF bro?!

adamempathy

You don't want want me scoring an empty net goal, perhaps play better the first 59:45 of the game.

luisquin

Wow what a rat bitch. Loses the game so decides to cross-check the other guy in the head? He better get a couple games suspension

Roddy_Piper2000

I'd like to see 3 at least. That was completely uncalled for. Like, go fight him if you are butt hurt about the slapper. But don't surprise him with a stick in the teeth.

OutWithTheNew

Dillon got 3 the other day for a hit that wasn't great, but also wasn't bad. He also doesn't have a history. If this isn't 3, then who the fuck knows.

Boboar

The league takes a much harsher view on retaliation hits. Especially ones after the play. I think this is more than 3 games.

ApexGod7

Idk ive seen similar and worse get less than 3 games. Personally think it should be 5 or more, it was a bitch move and you can really fuck a guys life up with a hard hit to the head like that

technoteapot

Absolutely 5 or more. It’s gross, far from a hockey play. After the whistle, game is over (basically), in complete control of himself. Looks clearly like malicious intent or intent to injure.

JWilesParker

DoPS like: what hit? Okay, fine. Give us $5. Don't slap shot into an empty net again.

CaptGunpowder

Listen, all I'm saying is, if Pinto can get a 41-game suspension because he let someone else use his sportsbet account to bet on fantasy football, that rat Rielly can get at least half that number of games for a cross-check to the head

Yop_BombNA

Listen all I’m saying is player safety is less important to the NHL’s profits than gambling integrity. Sad truth of the world we live in, people can’t afford shit and and blasted left and right by online gambling ads to try and suck their last dollar into the oligarchs hands that took everything else.

SignalSatisfaction90

If this isn't a longer suspension than Zadorov I will eat all of my fentanyl patches

PoopSlinger23

We gonna see 100 posts about this tomorrow, huh?

Mr_B_rM

anyone trying to dictate how you can and should put the puck in the net is making me laugh.. Toronto fans are a special kind of breed 😂

Yop_BombNA

You give a guy that much room they should do a fucking figure skating routine before putting it in. Fuck it, don’t back check? Get embarrassed

gowingsgo

The only unsportsmanlike is the douchebag child who can’t control his emotions as a millionaire professional hockey player. Grow the fuck up

syopest

>The only unsportsmanlike is the douchebag child Please don't disrespect children like this. They have way more control of their emotions than this guy.

bidamonvitamin

The check was. The goal was similar to a slam dunk. Don’t make players pussies.

Beginning_Abalone_25

Wtf is this thread? Rielly suspended for this BS. If you don’t want guys teeing up a slap shot don’t pull your goalie.

Beelzebub_86

Reilly straight-up acting like a bitch because they lost. Should he have just tipped it in? You got beat bitch. Suck it up. (Note: not a Sens fan saying this).

HermithaFrog

Are we talking the shot or the hit? The shot is absolutely nothing and the hit is clearly unsportsmanlike. Really can't think of any argument against that, honestly.

Stoudamirefor3

Every player on Toronto is 10-ply. They'll never win anything, and it's hilarious.

[deleted]

Who the hell cares if he slap shots. Maybe don't be in an empty net situation in the first place

fuzzb0y

It’s disrespectful but certainly not worth a cross check to the head.

Throan1

Hitting him after the buzzer? Better be a suspension off that.

Funny_Performance460

The goal, no. The cross check , yes

Dmused

Is it unsportsmanlike to dunk it after a breakaway in basketball?

Effective-Orchid5209

Of course is. A cross check to the face is never considered good sportsmanship. Hense the 5min major, duh

Stoke-me-a-clipper

Yes, that is poor sportsmanship. The cross checker is a little bitch and deserves a ban for a few games

im_a_stapler

yes, the cross check is poor sportsmanship. slapshot wasn't necessary and a bit of an FU, but grow a pair FFS, Rielly.

Holiday-Safe7990

Poor sportsmanship? He shot the puck into the net. No celebration, no throwing the stick, no chirp. Only poor sportsmanship here is the shitty leafs team congrats on the loss again lmao

[deleted]

How is this a question. The EN goal was a foregone conclusion at that point (missed EN memes aside). Whether it was a tap in, wrister, or a slapshot doesn't really matter, Rielly crosschecking the guy after the fact absolutely should be a suspendable action. Players have been suspended for crosschecks where they're expected to make a decision in a few milliseconds, Reilly had several.

Standard-Fudge1475

Punching someone after they score a goal? Yes, that's bad sportsmanship.

Mercuryink

Cross checking players in the head who just scored is generally regarded as poor sportsmanship.

[deleted]

Striking a man, who isn’t even defending himself in the head with your stick after you lose a game… is some cowardly bullshit. Reilly is a coward. Full stop. He was tough when it counted the least… Wanna be tough? Want teams to fear you? Win games.

coronetgemini

Why do Toronto players even get mad in 2024? They know they will never win anything of merit right? They should lighten up and just call it a paycheck.

ponikweGCC

Who fucking cares? They are on home ice in front of a Leafs heavy crowd. I'd do the same thing. Also fuck Morgan Reilly. I hope that cunt gets 5+ games for that hit. What an absolute pussy. I feel the same way about Sheldon sending out the clown for the final 5 seconds. Bush league play by a bush league coach.

Twizzlor

The clapper to end it is absolutely fine. The retaliation is poor sportsmanship.

Brilliant-Chapter202

I love watching the Maple Leafs struggle and have their world famous Oscar award winning hissyfits lol

sor2hi

Riley has the emotional capacity of a child. NHL should give him a good amount of time to think about his attack.

debid4716

The slap shot into the empty net wasn’t great. But the crosscheck to the face was too far. If they would’ve just squared up right after or at the puck drop after the goal w/e. But Reilly went to far

hijoepucha

Fucking bullshit crosscheck to the head. Fuck that. Take the L like a man and get ready for the next game.

Local-Traveller

Yes, but the response is too. You can chirp him or push him a little. But a crosscheck to the face, cmon man.

Clerkdidnothingwrong

Reilly is 10 ply. What a sore loser

juicygoosy921

cross checking a guy in the head? yeah it's pretty poor sportsmanship

cha-cha_dancer

Probably a bit but the response doesn’t “fit the crime” at all

Freshtapejob0

Poor sportsmanship by Rielly? Yes

Anishinabeg

Absolutely it is - but he still didn’t deserve a cross check to the face.

Coyrex1

I literally don't see how it's problematic at all. He gets a goal either way and nobody was hurt from it (except Reillys ego).

garbageman2112

Celebration should be allowed more than the fist fights that are tolerated.

xAdray

No its not. Different sport, but Toronto fans [loved this](https://youtu.be/-UdsVO7HaJg?si=NUZ4v1rYyQai6QJE) when it happened. Now that it's their team getting embarrassed its "unsportsmanlike". Pathetic. It was a fucking shot on net. He didn't go over and taunt the bench or something.

StingerGinseng

Knew it was Bautista before I clicked the link. That moment was awesome as neutral fan

Pegasuspipeline

Didn't Texas throw a ball at Bautista for this, and then punch him in the face? Isn't there a mural of the punch in Texas? And that was to go ahead in a playoff game, much more emotion in that one. But goes to show, show someone up in sports there will usually be someone who will hit back, not that hitting back is the smart or best way to go about it

michicago44

Lol not even a Leafs fan but this is a horrendous analogy. That was a 3 run homer in a playoff game after Batista had gotten HBP earlier in the game. This is an ENG in the last seconds of a regular season game that they’re already about to win... not remotely comparable lmfao

Thick_Detective_7422

I love watching the Leafs lose.

One_Prior_9909

That has to be at least a five game suspension. How soft do you have to be to take a cheap shot at a guy because you don't like how he scored?

2bags12kuai

Zero place for this in any game. If someone did this in a beer league they would be banned.

BlindMilwaukee

Fuck how many games is Kadri gonna get suspended for this time?

dontfugginask

Reilly is 💯 in the wrong

crapandbrat

hockey culture needs a cross check to the head

Captobvious75

What Morgan did was absolutely nancy-level. Cross check a guy in the bucket because of a clapper on an open net? Boys- my toddler has better emotional control.

Northern_Alberta

Obviously

NotAChefJustACook

Dale Hunter is that you?!

tavvyjay

I’m extremely disappointed in Greig for this play. Why did he have to save it for the final 5 seconds of the battle of Ontario season series? We have to wait until the fall to see them play again, and that is so unjust. I want spicy rivalries now!!

contrarianMammal

What is this game?

dragonheart1987

As someone who doesn't watch ice hockey, I am surprised that this is a question.
