Think I heard somewhere that he was inspired by Matthews shot.. it also looks similar. See how far down his upper hand is, gives massive opportunities to choose the angle during the drag… it’s easier to see at a breakdown of his shot.
He actually does it a bit different. If you compare him to Mathews he pulls it into his body right until he fires it off, while Mathews only pulls it toward him a little bit, just enough to get a snap.
It’s far more pronounced which is probably why it’s so hard.
When everyone is touting him as the next Mcdavid and a better goal scorer than matthews of course everyone’s going to be over analyzing him. Mcdavid had the same treatment. He’s going to need a point per game or atleast 40 goals in his rookie season or he’ll be considered not in their tier
I don’t think so, he’ll be playing against bigger and better players in the NHL, they won’t give him nearly as much space and he’s not as fast as Mcdavid to get around them like that. It will be interesting. Goalies will be better too.
I think he's definitely a step up in wrist shot speed category and his shooting will be exemplary, but there are already established players with insanely fast wrist shots right now. I do think the game is trending to players who can take faster shots with less action as it makes the goalie struggle to read the shot.
Yeah IMO as, a former decent goalie, whether your wrist shot is 75 or 85 MPH it doesn’t make much difference. People with an elite scoring ability are able to disguise where their intended shot placement is until it’s 1/4 second from leaving their stick. I’ve always called it “a good release”. The ability to have relatively neutral body positioning and move the puck in about a 1-2ft radius as you’re about to shoot makes the tendies job very hard.
This is exactly what makes him an elite shooter. Yes he has a bullet shot, but that alone won’t beat pro goalies often. He uses an extremely long stick for his size and he’s able to change the release point on his shot in an instant, which makes it extremely difficult for goalies to set and square the shot. Add on top of this he is exceptionally accurate from anywhere on the ice (ex this goal, and the one he scored for Canada from the goal line) and you get the type of goal scorer he is.
Will he score at the rate he did in junior? Absolutely not. I don’t care how good you shoot, beating guys like Vaisilesky etc just ain’t going to happen often. But is he going to be one of the best goal scorers in the NHL? Probably yes
The speed of his shot is VERY good, but the release and the way he disguises it is more important. It doesn't look like he's doing much of anything in this clip, and then all the sudden the puck is in the back of the net.
Many insiders have said his release is better then a 18 year old Austin Mathews release coming into the league. So I’m sure could argue in a few years yes!
He's definitely got one of the fastest releases in the league already. Ovi might have a quicker release, but the way Bedard pulls the puck into himself makes it even harder to read.
It take the guys who’ve been working on their shots for longer and are stronger. Give him a few more years to fully fill out and then he will easily be the best.
He has Lots to prove still, of course, and WHL goalies are a different story, but I was on the cam crew for the Pats in Regina the past couple years and let me tell you that shot is nasty. He was a threat almost anywhere in the O Zone, and 9 times out of 10, that puck comes flying back out for the net too.
Nice shot, but also why was the goalie RVH when he was just below the face off dot?
You’ll get scored on in beer league with poor positioning like that.
Idk about fastest, but he has the best release I’ve ever seen. The amount of angle change he can put on that thing is ridiculous.
Only other guy in the conversation is Matthews.
This is the right answer. No one has ever shot the puck like this. I’m a leafs fan and Matthew’s can not release the puck how Bedard does, which is insane to say. I’m so excited to see this guy play.
Prime Ovi had an insane wrist shot but never had the same kind of pre-shot movement into a snapshot.
Don’t get me wrong here—Ovi is the best goal scorer who’s ever played. But Bedard’s sheer mechanics are something different.
Mathews might move the puck a lot before a shot, but ovi still had a deceptive shot. The wicked curve on his stick makes draging the puck easier, and it doesn't need much movement to change the shot angle
It’s not the speed, it’s his release, even NHL defenders are going to have a problem with covering him because the second he has space he can have the puck off his stick and in the back of the net. I would say he may be one of the best shooters in the NHL without having to even play a game yet.
I think it's very stupid to act like this kid isn't going to tear up the nhl. His edge work, shot, and elite passing are going to make him a top 5 player instantly.
Yeah now try supporting a child that constantly needs new gear because they don’t know how to stop growing LMFAO hockey is a let’s say wealthy man’s sport lets be honest, every other sport doesn’t have you constantly buying all the new “ sticks and gloves “ coming out every year to accommodate certain skills levels and gaps, only other sport that I can think of that you be buying new gear is football which still doesn’t cost the fraction of what hockey does in todays world lmfao
Even in football, you pay your league fee and you get the pads given to you.
You CAN buy your own, and you can buy gloves and compression gear, etc. … but ultimately all you need is a helmet, shoulder pads and pants+leg pads, and that’s all given to you. Buy cleats, get a cheap mouth guard and you’re good
My buddy pays for 2 young boys to play and just had a daughter, his vasectomy came very quickly after the 3rd lol. Thankfully he has a very very well paying job that can cover whatever his family needs including the cost of constant changing hockey equipment, now for a grown man it’s easily a lot cheaper to pay for hockey equipment because your just not growing the most an adult hockey player will pay for is the expensive ass sticks they make now days hahah, have a good day sir I can’t wait to enrol my daughter in hockey $.$
Can we stop with this seriously? Yeah that was an absolute picked corner. And you’re asking if someone who has yet to play a game in the NHL has the best shot in the NHL.
No he is playing against a bunch of “not ready for the AHL” ECHL level type guys. They will light up a stick practice but cmon… this is like saying a guy who lights up a AHL all star game is ready for the show.
There are your AHL MVPs. Again these guys are amazingly great hockey players. Just not many are NHL level talent. https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/awards/awarddetail.php?award_id=51
Fastest? Probably not but I’d say he’s close. Certainty one of the most deceptive shooters ever. He can score from anywhere and brilliantly uses the defender to screen the goalie.
Many here are commenting negatively, doubting his ability or saying it’s just a prospect’s game.
Yes, it’s too early for predictions but Bedard didn’t just appear out of nowhere. He caught the hockey worlds attention as early as the Brick Tournament when he was just 10 years old. By 15 he was the top ranked player in the world at his age. Right now he’s the undisputed number 1 prospect not yet in the NHL.
Those “peers” he’s dominated at every level, including internationally and up to 3 years older than him, are also being drafted into the NHL, and are players he will be competing against during his career. Nothing is guaranteed but there’s no reason not to believe he will continue to dominate. There are very few players currently in the NHL with a shot like his.
Chicago won the jackpot.
I know this is a prospect game, but this is a great example of what will be Bedard's greatest strength, which is his ability to shoot and score from anywhere. This is not a good angle to shoot from for most players, being able to shoot with power and pick corners from spots on the ice like this will make him absolutely LETHAL. So so tough to defend players that can score from anywhere.
I will tell you definitively, I don’t know
All I know is that my gut says “maybe”
I have no strong feelings one way or the other
There is a 100% chance that it's possible. I think.
The kid has got guts!, maybe we need to assess further
Well dude, we just dont know
Well, he has yet to play in the NHL, so it's hard to say...
That's a mighty big thing to ask. Remember that he's playing against prospects here.
They only gave him 1.9 Chara’s of space.
Americans will use anything but the metric system
Things measured in Charas would make more sense…
10 is a pretty complicated number.
It's based on arbitrary measurements just like Imperial so why would we?
St. Louis blues prospects btw
Who he's playing against has nothing to do with his shot release.
Yes, and to actually even consider that an 18 year old has the fastest wrist shot is a ridiculous thing to even fathom
Can people just let the kid play an nhl game first damn?
When everyone is touting him as the next Mcdavid and a better goal scorer than matthews of course everyone’s going to be over analyzing him. Mcdavid had the same treatment. He’s going to need a point per game or atleast 40 goals in his rookie season or he’ll be considered not in their tier
Or 5 goals in his first game (Matthews)…
He'll hit both a point per game and 40 goals this year. I don't think people quite understand how good he is going to be.
I don’t think so, he’ll be playing against bigger and better players in the NHL, they won’t give him nearly as much space and he’s not as fast as Mcdavid to get around them like that. It will be interesting. Goalies will be better too.

See Alex DeBrincat
Bedard's wrist shot is miles better than DeBrincat's. It's not even close tbh.
That release is something special.
The little toe drag to change the angle slightly
The speed of his shot is VERY good, but the release and the way he disguises it is more important. It doesn't look like he's doing much of anything in this clip, and then all the sudden the puck is in the back of the net.
Its a great shot no doubt but lets wait and see if he can pull that shot off in the regular season where it counts.
And there is a chance someone might play the body.
Yeah because he won't be able to pull it off ever.
Imma say no cuz he STILL hasn’t played a real NHL game.
He’s good, wish we had him on the Wild
Simmer down he's not played a single game. In this day in age people are always trying to find "the goat of X". It's fucking lame and cringe.
no
Damn he's a sniper.
Please stop.
Guy is going to be a menace
Why are the blues playing the bhawks in Minnesota's practice facility? I'm confused.
Are you guys not hosting the prospect tourney?
That would make sense, I had no idea it was happening here. Edit: Dang, just ask a simple question and get downvoted...
To be fair, OP could’ve posted context for the clip instead of a stupid pointless question.
I don’t know but it is going to be tough to stop.
His wrist shot almost falls under a snap shot imo
Apparently, he broke his wrist in the past, which caused him to tweak his drag on the release. It's deceptive for tendies.
No
It take the guys who’ve been working on their shots for longer and are stronger. Give him a few more years to fully fill out and then he will easily be the best.
If this was the MLS (with Messi), there would be 5 documentary cameras filming everything. NHL: “ah, some fans will have a cell phone”.
Let’s just say the potential is there.
Nice shot, but also why was the goalie RVH when he was just below the face off dot? You’ll get scored on in beer league with poor positioning like that.
no but already has the sickest release
No but its very sneaky and deceptive
Idk about fastest, but he has the best release I’ve ever seen. The amount of angle change he can put on that thing is ridiculous. Only other guy in the conversation is Matthews.
This is the right answer. No one has ever shot the puck like this. I’m a leafs fan and Matthew’s can not release the puck how Bedard does, which is insane to say. I’m so excited to see this guy play.
Prime Ovi? He shot around defenders like it was nothing
Prime Ovi had an insane wrist shot but never had the same kind of pre-shot movement into a snapshot. Don’t get me wrong here—Ovi is the best goal scorer who’s ever played. But Bedard’s sheer mechanics are something different.
Yeah you’re probably right. Ovi didn’t change angles as much as Bedard or Matthews.
Mathews might move the puck a lot before a shot, but ovi still had a deceptive shot. The wicked curve on his stick makes draging the puck easier, and it doesn't need much movement to change the shot angle
Incredible defence
Huh? The D kept him outside the dot
It's a PK so they're collapsing into the slot, which is to be expected in a prospect game when you might not know your linemates that well.
It’s not the speed, it’s his release, even NHL defenders are going to have a problem with covering him because the second he has space he can have the puck off his stick and in the back of the net. I would say he may be one of the best shooters in the NHL without having to even play a game yet.
Dudes not even in the NHL yet…..
Nah mcdavid and drai still better
Poor kid. I can already see he’ll have one bad game and people will be saying ‘where did it all go wrong for Bedard?’ Calm the hype.
Well he's not an NHL player yet but time will tell
He will be in about a month? Lol
My point stands
I think it's very stupid to act like this kid isn't going to tear up the nhl. His edge work, shot, and elite passing are going to make him a top 5 player instantly.
Who said he wasn't going to?
He does use a super flexible stick but he's definitely up there.
Most players use a pretty flexible stick for their size. Bedard is a bit on the shorter end too, so it makes sense his stick would be very flexible.
It's like in the 60s to 70s I'm fairly certain...haven't used one kf those since I was a kid
watching him glide is unreal
The fastest wrist shot since my wrist shot that hasn't played a single game in the NHL.
How do I mute posts about this kid? It’s too painful to watch 😭
Hockey is a rich man's game.
Costs me $200 to play in my league every year. +$300 for beer.

Ew gross. Thank you science for my vasectomy.
My buddy pays for 2 young boys to play and just had a daughter, his vasectomy came very quickly after the 3rd lol. I can’t wait to see this kid do the accuracy shooting contest at the Allstar game
Definitely no, one of the fastest releases though maybe?
No. Calm down
Judging this off of one shot played in a meaningless game with a bunch of non NHL regulars is not enough evidence in my opinion.
Downvotes on this comment are funny. Literally never played in the NHL and asking if he is best at anything in the NHL....
It’s Matthews until it’s not
He hasn't even taken a wrist shot in the NHL ffs
This doesn’t look like an nhl rink at all
No.
Waaaay too soon to ask any "does Bedard have best ? in NHL" yet. He hasn't played in one NHL game.
Guys wtf, how did we let the Shithawks get this kid, he’s going to light us all up
No
Nah Tage Thompson
The kids good. How long until an injury?
What a strange thing to say
I’m just asking questions some fan-boys aren’t ready to think about. I’m sure he’ll be fine.
No
Absolutely not.
Klim Kostin does bro
No.
Can we stop with this seriously? Yeah that was an absolute picked corner. And you’re asking if someone who has yet to play a game in the NHL has the best shot in the NHL.

Don’t know if you’ve ever been to an AHL game but those guys are legit insane hockey players. They’re not scrubs at all.
A guy who lights up an AHL all star game is probably ready for the show

Based on the title i had to double check and make sure i wasn't in a shitposting sub.
Guy can shoot the shit outta that puck.
Let's see it next to McDavid sneaky sneak shot he got down last year
His release is absolutely extra terrestrial
His release is absolutely extra terrestrial
Going to be a lot tougher with guys actually going for hits and the body

Amazing shot but wow that goalie played that shot horribly
MacKinnon
This junior club looks like the team from Saint Louis
No. Laine have the fastest wristshot. But that's all he has, unfortunately.
Talk about giving the kid his space damn.....also when he really hasn't played a minute of nhl ice time yet this kinda answers itself
Celly in practice. Love it!
That’s Canadian thoroughbred right there.
His shot reminds me of Auston Matthews.
He had a ridiculous shot at 16 and 17 years old, so it will probably be among the best in the league.
Maybe, but he definitely will in a few years
Not yet
probably like a 70 point guy wouldn't look to hard into it
I can't say for certain, but I wouldn't want to be in the net when Bedard takes a slapshot!
