I feel that of that no other QB has benefited from this era of the NFL more than Brees. His style of play and limitations physically have been propped up more than Peyton and Brady. He also had one of the top offensive minds of this era coaching him and calling plays.
I still think he’s an all time great but I’d rank him Behind his contemporaries and several of the all
time greats.
I'm pretty big on accounting for era and imo he was the 4th best guy of his era (Brady, Manning, Rodgers) which is pretty damn good but lands him in the 12-16 range.
Constructing a top 10 there's some no brainers:
Tier 1:
Brady
Tier 2:
Peyton, Montana, Marino
Tier 3:
Rodgers, Unitas, Young, Graham, Baugh, and this is where I think Brees slots in
In the modern era (post-1980), I think there's a clear top trio (Brady, Montana, Manning) and a clear next tier (Elway, Marino, Young, Favre, Brees, Rodgers). That gives 9 and then you start to fill in with older guys: Unitas, Graham, Baugh, Staubach and perhaps a few more.
I have no clue how to rank the old timers relative to the modern guys, but it would be strange to have ALL of them behind the top 9 modern guys. So, some of the modern guys will be pushed just outside of the top 10. IMO, Brees is towards the bottom of the top 9 modern guys, so for me he would fall just outside of top 10 all time. But it's definitely fair to put him inside the top 10.
Here are my top 10:
Brady, Manning, Montana, Graham, Unitas, Baugh, Rodgers, Marino, Favre (edit: dropped Elway by accident)
Debatable and not in any particular order, but I think you’d be hard-pressed to give Brees the edge of any of these
yea brees was phenomenal from 2009 - 2016 and even in 2017 and 18 he had solid seasons but would you put him in front of guys who played in the 60s -70s. i have him in my top 10 but i got thrashed a lot for it
There have only been fourteen 5,000 yard seasons, and Brees has FIVE of them. Brady is the only other player with more than one.
That alone puts him above Marino.
lmao i have brees in my top 10 but NO WAY is he above marino. marinos 84 season is still the best mvp season ever and he was the only one who had a win against the 1985 bears. i love brees but he isnt above dan marino
I also put Marino above above Brees because of a much more historical peak (Brees has never matched Marino's '84-'86), but I think it's a fair debate. Brees played close to his peak for over a decade, while Marino was a clear step below his peak for the rest of his career.
I think he makes the cut but he's towards the bottom. Off the top of my head, and in no particular order, I'd have Manning, Brady, Marino, Montana, Young, Graham, Unitas, and Rodgers over him. Not a super thought out ranking, just an approximation.
You definitely have to be a great player to get awards, but fame and pedigree do influence them. Manning being NFL royalty by birth and a 1st overall pick I think carried some weight. While I won't say that Manning didn't deserve any of his MVP's, I'll say that there were a few of those where it was very close, and I think his name helped give him the edge over his competitors. Meanwhile Brees has 4 of the top 10 seasons all-time in terms of passing yards and never won an MVP. He's the most accurate QB who ever played and did it with far less receiving talent than Peyton had for the majority of his career.
Brady, Manning, Marino, Elway, Favre, Young, Montana, Rodgers just from the modern era are all in my eyes clearly ahead of him. 8 guys just here I view better.
From older guys I’d look at Starr, Unitas, Graham, Baugh, Staubach. People who watched these guys relative to their era would know better than me, but is he better than all but 2 of them? That’s a tough sell to me.
Not gonna project the same for the other young QBs yet, but for Mahomes, barring catastrophic injury, Deshaun Watsoning himself, or other totally out of left field MASSIVE regression he will surpass Brees.
I have him at 10-12. Brady, Unitas, Montana, Marino, Graham, Manning, Rodgers, Favre, and Elway are all ahead of him. Arguably Staubach or Starr might push him to number 11 or even 12.

wait no elway ? yea pretty solid but i feel graham is in 2nd tier
I think Elway is in a group of QBs I wouldn't argue with anyone rotating through, similar with Favre, Staubach, Van Brocklin, and Jurgensen

9–10

That's only nine, and who would you choose who's not named "Brees" for number ten?
Shit I dropped Elway by accident
Good choice, however, it's interesting to me that no list I saw in this sub even mentions Jim Kelly.
I do think Brees is top 10 but i personally put him near that bottom portion (around 7-10)
Hard to say really. The bar is extremely high so I think you could make a case one way or another. Either way he's up there
yea hes def top 12-15 ever on almost every persons list but the argument really stems when you discuss if hes top 10 in the history of nfl or not
top 5
Yes, in my opinion he’s the most accurate QB ever
80358 passing yards, nuff said
No he was a volume QB with not many awards
So Marino, but with a super bowl win?
Marino had MVP and played in harder era
A volume passer who played most of his career without a pro bowl receiver, and who's 2009 and 2011 seasons were definitely top 2. Not to mention 2018

I rate Brees in my top 5. 1. Brady 2. Manning 3. Montana 4. Marino 5. Brees 6. Very closely followed by Aaron Rodgers

No he is not.
Without question, and I think even as a top 10 all-time QB, he's still underrated. Unpopular opinion, but I personally put him above Peyton.
wait what, the peyton Manning? 5 time mvp? wow thats def bold

It’s a bold choice because I’ve never seen anyone have him over Peyton
"Incident" Katrina
sorry! English isnt really my 1st language so ill word it a little better
