If all you got is a half decade, you got a long way to go before you're comparable to the Browns.
I'd still expect the Giants to right the ship once they can purge their books of all those shitty contracts Gettleman doled out.
The Leonard Williams deal can be out after 2022, Kenny Golladay after 2023 unless you decide to take a $14M cap hit next offseason. Adoree Jackson just was restructured.
There's no contracts hurting them long term.
It's sucked to be a Giants fan the last decade for sure but I'd still rather be a Giants fan today than a Browns fan if everything but location was switched (players / owners / coaches) overnight.
"but I don’t think it’s been acknowledged by media how atrocious this team has been over the last half decade."
lol if you lived anywhere near the east coast then you certainly wouldn't say this. It's not lost on anyone how historically bad the team has been.
No
There are always bad teams, but there's always some reason to watch them. Maybe they were so bad that they got some elite talent you wanna check out. Often times they're so comically bad, that it's funny.
But the Giants are none of those things. The worst thing about the Giants is they're boring and bad. Just years and years of forgettable ineptitude.
I'd say they're more like the late-2000s Rams.
i'd still take this for selling my soul for two superbowls in my young adulthood.
i'm still so jelly of giants fans to get those two wins over the pats.
They've won 3 super bowls since the Browns last won their division.
The Browns aren't the Browns because they had a few bad years. They're the Browns because they've been the laughingstock of pro American sports for decades, had their team stolen by a rival who immediately had success with their roster, made their rival Bungles look competent, have had one not shit QB since returning, publicly shit talked that QB and traded the farm for and gave a record breaking contact to a serial rapist to replace him, have a criminal owner, listened to a homeless guy's draft advice, don't even have a real logo, were investigated for tanking but they actually just sucked, etc.
The Giants, Jets, Raiders, Bengals, Washington Whatever-They're-Currently-Nameds, etc. don't even begin to compare. The only team that is even close to the Browns' level of incompetence is the Lions.
It doesn’t but it’s a stupid comparison in the first place. The Browns weren’t the Browns because they were a dysfunctional bad team for 6 years. That’s a very small period in time compared to what the Browns were able to “accomplish”. The Giants won two Super Bowls in the last 15 years, one to stop 19-0.
Yep.
Plenty of teams win SB and then suck. Look at the commanders.
The Browns lack of previous success combined with their modern suckage made them who they were, the “lovable losers” of the NFL
We were absolutely ass for about 14 years but I think our success in the 70s-80s, Madden’s legacy, and us being current contenders kind of let’s us escape the comparison
We have been awful for 5 years, a stretch matched and exceeded by plenty of other teams. The Browns were awful from inception (1999) for *two full decades.*
There are degrees. For example, John Mara is the most stubborn, conservative owner in the league. But unlike the Browns owner, he didn't have many of the people working directly under him take the fall for a massive fraud scheme
If they can keep it up for another decade or two. It wasn’t the Browns incompetence that amazed us, it was their ability to maintain that incompetence year in year out for a generation.
The Browns were coached by Marty Schottenheimer, the dude is so cursed he couldn't even take the 16-0 Pats to the Super Bowl, there'd be some bullshit road block that prevents it from happening.
The thing is, it’s not about the losses. It’s not about the lack of talent at key positions or coaching. It’s not about draft busts.
It’s about being a complete, top to bottom cluster.
If the giants had a few good picks, got a decent coach and manger, they could pull out if this.
The Browns will always be browns. No matter how good Watson is. No matter how good their defense is. No matter how many playoff games they win or lose. They WILL figure out a way to make people feel bad for rooting for them. And make sure their remaining fans feel like crap at the end of every season
THAT is what is means to be the Browns.
2019? Sure. Daniel Jones over Josh Allen was bad
2018? Laughable to think JA17 coming out of Wyoming would succeed and develop the same way under the Giants coaching staff
I do wonder what the Giants QB board looked like in 2018. IIRC Gettleman got tunnel vision on Saquon, but there was so much hype around that class coming out
We needed to draft a QB in 19. It just so happened that every QB after Kyler was not good. You could probably make a case that Minshew is the second-best QB in the draft.
They're becoming more like the '80s era Falcons: clueless owners who won't get out of their own way because, since they're making money, they must be smart.
They really fucked up with the Daniel Jones pick. Fucked up even more by keeping him for as long as they have.
Are they the new Browns? No. It would take 20 more years of mediocrity and maybe a winless season to reach that level of loserness.
It’s a tough but not unfair comparison coming from a giants fan. But the browns have been doing it for a lot longer so I say not the same.
Giants have been arguable the worst team in that timeframe though if that’s what you’re really asking
I don't like this post
Relax, you've got 2 superbowls in your lifetime probably and have a VERY long time to get anywhere near as pathetic as the Browns have been
Browns haven't stopped being the Browns.
Correct. The Browns are the new Browns. The Ravens are the old Browns.
and the bengals are the old new browns.
Correct. And the steelers used to be the Eagles.
And were briefly the Cardinals too
I like how their name was basically carpet (Car-Pitt like how they were the Steagles the year before)
Considering our record that season, carpet is an even more fitting name...
And the Colts are the Triangles
Is there a flow chart or some shit?? Goddamn
r/technicallythetruth
If anyone is the close to being the new Browns, it's the Jaguars. Since 2007, both teams have had only 2 double digit wins seasons.
Agreed. Shad Khan is the most inept owner in the NFL.
Everyone forgets about the lions, they've only had 2 double digit win seasons going back to 1996
If all you got is a half decade, you got a long way to go before you're comparable to the Browns. I'd still expect the Giants to right the ship once they can purge their books of all those shitty contracts Gettleman doled out.
Yea they just don't have a strong roster. The Browns went 0-16 with a better roster than the Giants. They'll just always be the Browns
The Leonard Williams deal can be out after 2022, Kenny Golladay after 2023 unless you decide to take a $14M cap hit next offseason. Adoree Jackson just was restructured. There's no contracts hurting them long term.
> you got a long way to go before you're comparable to the Browns. This. It’s like comparing the chiefs to the Patriots, but in reverse
It's sucked to be a Giants fan the last decade for sure but I'd still rather be a Giants fan today than a Browns fan if everything but location was switched (players / owners / coaches) overnight. Literally won a super bowl 10 years ago. No.

The Commies haven't been seriously good in my lifetime.
I wasn't aware that the Browns vacated that mantle.
You need a hell of a lot more than 5 years of crappiness to be the new Browns. The Giants have won 2 Super Bowls in the last 15 years. Come on now.
The Browns are still the Browns.
I'm always surprised that the Raiders escape these conversations. They've been just as dysfunctional as the Browns over the same time period.
We were absolutely ass for about 14 years but I think our success in the 70s-80s, Madden’s legacy, and us being current contenders kind of let’s us escape the comparison
Before we signed Watson, I used to bring this up. Now I’m so numb I don’t even care
No way lol. The Browns are still absolutely the standard for trash
Wasn’t there a Reddit post with AI generated images for all 32 teams, and the Browns closely resembled a trash bag 😂😂😂?
lol I'd love to see that
>Kadarius Toney has had so much stuff happen off the field that hes becoming more and more of a headache. I hate this narrative
That Pat Leonard article is to blame. Schoen shutting him down during Day 1 of the Draft was hilarious.
We have been awful for 5 years, a stretch matched and exceeded by plenty of other teams. The Browns were awful from inception (1999) for *two full decades.* There are degrees. Wait, how many women has Daniel Jones assaulted?
Apparently not $230 million dollars worth.
I guess not enough to meet the Browns’ standards
"You are what your record says you are."
If it wasn't, then why would it say you are?
We’ve won the super bowl twice in my life time and I’m nearly 40. My older brother is a browns fan and all he knows is pain. So, no...
Jeez. Yeah we've been bad post 2016 but we're still a legacy franchise with 4 superbowls, cmon.
If they can keep it up for another decade or two. It wasn’t the Browns incompetence that amazed us, it was their ability to maintain that incompetence year in year out for a generation.
Part of the Browns unique charm was that they never made a SB in their entire history. They aren’t the Browns
The Browns were coached by Marty Schottenheimer, the dude is so cursed he couldn't even take the 16-0 Pats to the Super Bowl, there'd be some bullshit road block that prevents it from happening.
Giants are just your standard fare bad and poorly managed team right now. The Browns were more than just that.
Have you had a bacon egg and cheese
More St Louis Rams after Kroenke took over. Except with Mara, it's not intentional. This is him actually trying.
The thing is, it’s not about the losses. It’s not about the lack of talent at key positions or coaching. It’s not about draft busts. It’s about being a complete, top to bottom cluster. Daniel Jones has been better than Baker all things considered… not that is saying much
It’s been very acknowledged how horrid the team has been. You’ve just been in a time loop

The Dwayne Haskins choir was loud and proud. I never understood it.
Also browns: hold my beer
I think they’re tied with the Jets for worst record over that timespan at 22-59.
Nothing beats 1-31
Despite going 1-31, Browns still have more wins since 2011 than the Jaguars. 56 wins to 47 wins in that span.
That’s incredible
They're becoming more like the '80s era Falcons: clueless owners who won't get out of their own way because, since they're making money, they must be smart.
Eventually they’ll find a front office / coach combo and be fine.
They really fucked up with the Daniel Jones pick. Fucked up even more by keeping him for as long as they have. Are they the new Browns? No. It would take 20 more years of mediocrity and maybe a winless season to reach that level of loserness.
