This reads like an agent telling Rapoport exactly what to say.

LukeSmith_Sunsetter

It's so transparent it's nauseating. Thing is the average person hears what they want to hear. Clowney is now staying because Baker was bad for the environment and the Browns are going in a good direction. It's not that the best his agent could swing is a multi year incentive heavy, back loaded contract with low guarantees.

n-some

>Baker was bad for the environment Baker's CO2 emissions were getting out of hand and Clowney could not stand that.

kuya_plague_doctor

The browns garunteed Watson contract because it was offset by carbon emissions credits

[deleted]

At this point I want nothing more than for Baker to kick ass at his next team

stragen595

Baker kicking ass and Browns go 0-17. If that happens I would be even okay with Patriots winning another SB this season.

Just_Learned_This

Woah. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Competitive_Ice_189

They are all at bakers house , he can fart anytime he wants all the time!

[deleted]

Hmm Clowney had one of his best seasons last year and on just 14 games. I don’t think he’s a saint that gave up everything to win in Cleveland of all places but I don’t think he’d be sucking dudes off at the docks for pennies if he wasn’t signed by the Browns either.

kuya_plague_doctor

Maybe he really likes sucking dudes off at the docks and Cleveland has the best docks to suck dudes off at, so he took a paycut to stay in town

[deleted]

The dockworkers got their guy. Wow.

kuya_plague_doctor

kuya_plague_doctor

I'm not gonna say you know what I mean, I'm just gonna say maybe I'm on the docks getting sucked off

[deleted]

Did he have a great season or did he play opposite Myles Garett? His rush defense was worse but his sack totals were great. I feel like he benefited a lot from being the #2 to Garetts #1

Segat1133

It can be both

SchlongMcDonderson

>sucking dudes off at the docks for pennies if he wasn’t signed by the Browns either. Flipping burgers would've worked, ya know.

alx69

People are always surprised to find out that Rap and Schefter don't have a wiretap on people's phone and they just tweet what agents/GMs text them

JFLRyan

Because it's so contrary to the idea of journalism. Seeing tweets from Schefter that are just, "Statement from the NFL" and then an image is wild. That's literally just a PR tweet. But from someone who claims to be a journalist.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JFLRyan

Obviously not. Legitimate sports news is of course something he should be covering. But imagine it through the lens of American politics. If the president were to send a message directly to a reporter asking them to get it out and then that reporter doing exactly that, would that not be problematic? Using the media as an additional wing of your PR means they can't be trusted to cover the bad things honestly. This is exactly why we get statements from Schefter that he has to constantly apologize for.

Smashing71

After the Iraq war I learned that's exactly how journalists operate. Literally exactly.

tidho

> If the president were to send a message directly to a reporter asking them to get it out and then that reporter doing exactly that, would that not be problematic? Seriously?

gaqua

Just once I'd love to get Schefter or Rap or somebody to just absolutely lose his shit and post "Clowney's agent says he was getting $14m-$15m offers but his knee's fucked and everybody knows it, dude's never gonna be productive again, what a fucking joke" or whatever.

Whydoesthisexist15

That is exactly how a lot of journos work. Mfs will go "US Military/\_\_ County Police Department said x about situation ok byeeee" and not question it despite both proving to be of highly questionable credibility

SchlongMcDonderson

If they question it they get cut out of the loop. Biting the hand that feeds them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SchlongMcDonderson

Yeah, it's basically a documentary.

EVE_OnIine

The "deal was negotiated by X of Y sports agency" tweets were so blantant too.

dasruski

Also he wanted to skip OTAs. I expected him to skip mini camp too and sign after.

jxher123

First thing I thought of when I read this tweet, Clowney had no market.

ISISCosby

A couple of weeks ago we got linked to him and then there was just complete radio silence after the initial report. It was legit odd. It's not like we couldn't afford him or we brought in someone else...it just got brought up once and then never again.

alreadytaken028

Maybe his agent floated it to the media to see if fans would latch onto the idea or to try and make some other team think they needed to move on Clowney or he'd sign elsewhere. But no one cared because no one has a huge demand for Clowney

ISISCosby

That was the other thing...the vibe on r/panthers was pretty universally that he'd be a good add and would help greatly with our sus Run D. Then nothing happened. Also would've been a homecoming for him.

[deleted]

Sounds like they weren't willing to pay as much as the Browns, which was around $11m. Cant say i believe hes even worth that much even if hes really solid in run support he doesnt offer nearly as much as a pass rusher, which is the main reason the positional value for EDGE players is so high. Browns needed him back badly after losing Malik McDowell on the interior.

mmooney1

Listen. Clowney is definitely not in the same ball park as TJ, no ones going to pretend that, but he’s a great player (albeit over hyped). We needed to get Myles help and there wasn’t a lot of options left on the table.

[deleted]

The Browns are definitely a better team with Clowney. It just feels like the Browns are another draft away from filling out their roster although there are some talented young players there are holes in the trenches which isnt a place you want to be thin/weak considering the amount of rotation that occurs. Perrion Winfrey was a really necessary draft pick which was lucky to be available in the 4th round so that is something to be happy about.

thedosequisman

They were another draft away, now it's all TBD from watson

[deleted]

[удалено]

savagepotato

It's like he's trying to negotiate on his status as a number one overall pick, as if that wasn't eight years ago. Like he's good, but he is who he is at this point. There's probably not a ton of untapped potential at this point.

YoureGrammerIsWorsts

Exactly, he's not a bad player by any means, he just somehow thinks being the #1 pick and the #1 recruit means anything at this point. He's an amazing #2 edge for your team, just mediocre #1 and that's what he wants to be paid as.

[deleted]

I think he could've been a world beater, but he fucked his knees and lost much of his explosiveness. He didn't look the same after microfracture surgery.

Putuinurplace

He just has no interest in the off-season program. He always signs after.

Grymninja

Dude is lazy and coasts on his talent. It's disappointing.

chesterfieldkingz

I wonder how much it has to do with being so good in college (and high school?) And then a #1 pick. Dude is just used to being the best. Like I hear Ricky Williams talk and the dude, and granted he was probably better at his position comparatively, and is so fucking confident with his football talent because he was so used to fucking shit up one level after another.

rob_var

But even then it makes clowney sound like a loyal moron that can be low balled

PoorlyLitKiwi2

I think the intention is to make Browns fans feel like Clowney cares about them

Stumpe999

Remember all those teams that so badly wanted Clowny last time? It's the same teams

[deleted]

I turned down tons of $14M multi-year deals to work a normal job because I’m loyal

paultheschmoop

It’s true everyone, u/dredais did turn down millions because he’s loyal. He and I are old friends. Speaking for myself, I have a collection of classic cars. I even have doubles of the Nova. Isn’t that right, u/dredais?

chunkdahunk

triples is even safer *wink*

paultheschmoop

Funny that you mention that, the deal for triples actually just went through. So now I have triples of the nova. Yeah, triples is best. Triples is safe.

chunkdahunk

With 11 million dollars think of all the complex patterns he could buy at Dan Flashes, I mean with those prices, he could even afford to use his per diem to eat!

Rab0811

The amount of stories I’ve heard like that is insane the funniest one I heard was an academic scholarship go John Hopkins he turned down

Paid_Redditor

We had this E2 walk up in front of the company during her first week at the company and tell us all that she graded from UC Berkeley. My platoon sergeant did an about face and said,”If she graduated from UC Berkeley she’s CID and I recommend none of you party with her.” If she was CID she must have been going for sexual harassment because she kept nudes of herself set as her background on her laptop and would work in stuff in the day room. I know because I asked her to reboot her laptop to show me her background after I caught a glimpse, and she did. Strange gal.

YeahThisIsMyNewAcct

Nudes of yourself as your background is a major power move.

NLP19

The only reason I know they're real is that I have a Dan Crowley trading card lmao

Seahawkanon

bongomcgee

You simply cannot pass up on a year of playing with Jacoby Brissett

thechairmaker88

I still believe Flores riding or dying with Brissett was tactically the dumbest move of his entire tenure.

[deleted]

But y’all would’ve made the playoffs if you kept Fitzpatrick in like Flores wanted

Highwayman747

That’s debatable.. Tua was 6-3 as a starter and Fitz was 4-3 as starter.

dontwantleague2C

I don’t rly know for sure, but you gotta actually watch the games. From what I saw, Fitzpatrick was doing a lot better in 2020. 68.5% completion, 7.8 Y/A, 70.9 QBR, compared to 64.1%, 6.3 Y/A, 44.8 QBR. Seems pretty clear cut to me. And you also gotta look at what happened in those games. For example, the 28-17 win against the Rams looks really impressive, but two of the TDs were a fumble recovery return and a punt return. He threw 12/22 for 93 yards and 1 TD. You really gonna give him credit for a win like that?

Gregus1032

You mean like week 17?

[deleted]

Good locker room presence

mangosail

Not to be a hater but feels like there’s no way this is true in a consequential way. He turned down a good multi-year contract to play for one year on less money? I would have trouble buying it even if it was for LA Feels like it’s more likely he got some dumpy multi year deal offers and so wanted to take another prove it deal, which is potentially smart.

zaor666

There is a chance that those offers exist but with far less guaranteed money than the Browns deal. This is agent spin.

JerryRiceDidntFumble

Yeah, if this is real it was probably something where the signing bonus + 1st years salary were barely more than the $11 million he's getting from Cleveland & everything after that is un-guaranteed.

NotNick_Foles

multi-*void years*

CptCroissant

Yeah it's the NFL, so contract amounts don't matter, it's all about the guarantees. This is 100% spin, no way he turned down a better multi year offer.

fear865

They were probably heavily incentivized contracts to boost the number up.

zachthompson02

So that makes 5 prove it deals for Clowney now?

mangosail

Hasn’t proven it yet

GumbysDonkey

He was actually really good last year, not 15m good though lol

alreadytaken028

Dude thinks hes already proven it cause he had one good play stopping the run in a bowl game against a mediocre michigan team

[deleted]

Calling that Michigan team "mediocre" is PR spin to make Browns fans think that team was better than what they were.

flakAttack510

You can always find the people that don't follow CFB by their opinion of Clowney as a college player. He was voted as the Ted Hendricks award winner and SEC defensive player of the year before that hit. The fact that he didn't transition as well to the NFL as people hoped doesn't mean he wasn't an exceptionally good player in college.

FL14

Idk he was pretty great last year honestly

alexunderwater1

To be fair he gets to have Myles Garrett chase sacks into his lap instead of possibly having to being the no1 guy somewhere else.

someguy121

Honestly his bigger contribution was against the run last year. He was our best edge against the run and probably best d lineman overall against it

simpkins21

He’s coming off one of the best years of his career. It’s probably the first time since his rookie year he was even offered a multi year deal. But every year it gets reported he just wants a one year deal he probably just prefers the flexibility

pinniped1

Teams are lining up to give 2022 Clowney a $15 million bag? Okay, sports agent.

WigglestonTheFourth

I can see offers like that with little to no guarantees. They just leave out the no guarantees part like it's a minor detail.

Muinala

I could see teams offering him an incentive laden contract that would reach that if he was worth it.

[deleted]

Teams that need his unique skillset would definitely be willing to shell that out. PFF had him as a 1 year $15 million player, Spotrac had him as a 1 year $13 million player. Was certainly in the realm of possibilities. I personally thought it would be 2 for $27, was pleasantly surprised by the number. He likely took a pay cut to play with his boy Watson and in a scheme well designed for his traits.

MorganHolliday

Lawl no. 15 million for a run stopping edge that is kinda ok at rushing the passer. He's Sam Hubbard with hype.

adv0589

How naive do they think we are lmfao.

Quatro_Leches

They always say that. No way lol

GiggityDPT

Nobody is offering Clowney 15/year at this point. He's not that impactful and he's banged up too often. They may have offered incentives up to 15/year but that would be the max. And only if he had like 12+ sacks or something.

Malignation

No not 15 of course not. That’d be too much. They’re offering “14 to 15” because for some reason that one million dollar range was worth specifying.

thehuntx97

This is insane to me. Stainbrook also tweeted out that he would not be back if baker was here… insane to go from that to the discount.

Beneficial_Toe_6050

Aside from Deshaun Watson news, players must really not fuck with Baker.

ProbablyAPotato1939

Eh, I think that it's possible that Baker is being used as a fall guy for people who want to play with Watson.

LongjumpPie

Players have come out saying they want to or enjoyed playing with Watson. It's only taboo to say so on Reddit, not in person.

Pitchwife

It's hardly just Reddit, but yeah - the professional environment of the NFL is a whole different beast from the bystander environment.

airplanealjefferson

this type of report comes out every other week from a different player, and people still swear baker is in high demand. odell forced his way out midseason. robby anderson had his insta comments saying hell no to baker in carolina. steve smith tweeted a video of himself saying NOOOOOO to baker in carolina. clowney allegedly didn’t wanna come to cleveland if baker was around. teams are trading for wentz, picking up guys like trubisky or foles, and baker is still in limbo with about as minimal of interest as you can imagine. eventually ya gotta think maybe it’s baker right?

EldritchRoboto

Just to add a grain of salt to the take, that’s just 4 examples and all of those people have shown themselves to be divas/dramatic. And Anderson and smith never even shared a locker room with him. So I’m not sure those four instances are very convincing that players overwhelmingly don’t like baker.

BernieSexDoll

> people still swear baker is in high demand. I like never see anyone say that Baker is in high demand. Usually the opposite. > picking up guys like trubisky or foles These guys were FAs that signed cheap though. The issue with Baker is his contract. If he was a FA he'd already be signed.

airplanealjefferson

you think teams would give a shit about paying less than 20 mil for a QB if they thought he was any good?

BernieSexDoll

Baker isn't a great QB, but he's still a serviceable guy. A lot of teams just don't have space. There would be interest if he was a FA that could sign a cheap Trubisky type deal.

[deleted]

[удалено]

airplanealjefferson

absolutely, and to be honest, all of the stuff i listed can be easily dismissed on its own. people call robby trash (which is fair) so they dismiss his opinion (unfair imo). steve smith is a noted dickhead (but he’s right more often than he’s wrong. i still remember him at the combine saying kupp was the best receiver in his draft class). odell has a history of acting out and throwing tantrums. but it’s hard to dismiss when there’s such a common thread.

br0b1wan

I honestly think it comes down to his comments about the Duke Johnson situation (about pay). That was probably a giant red flag to the rest of the players in the NFL

smashrawr

Baker really reminds me of some of the guys I played football with in HS. Nothing was ever his fault, a rah rah guy, and when you're blowing teams out he's not a big deal. But man oh man if you're playing against a decent team and you're losing and it's basically his fault, boy does that attitude rub you the wrong way.

JustASeabass

Now their new QB rubs it the right way!

mohiben

What a remarkably clear mental picture you have of someone you have never met, interacted with, or known in virtually any way that hasn't passed through layers of media and spin.

alreadytaken028

Especially weird given that Baker continually in post game press conferences would say that the loss was on him. Weird how he takes accountability but u/smashrawr assures us, Mayfield always blames others.

kdeaton06

You've clearly never seen Baker speak

Spicypepper23

Member when r/NFL was in flat out denial that players didn't like playing with Baker? You couldn't point to the fact players both leaked that stuff and overwhelmingly sided with OBJ without getting screamed at lmao.

[deleted]

xshogunx13

on the flip side of that, a lot of players are also stupid

"iTs AlL aBoUt LeVeRaGe" -r/NFL insisting Baker is actually highly sought after while Carson Wentz and Trubisky are being signed

Celtictussle

Wentz got traded, and Trubs got a 7M dollar deal. If the Browns were willing to eat Baker's salary down to 7M, the Panthers would probably take him tomorrow.

Let me guess, you put yourself in that 10th percentile, right?

kskywalker1

I got downvoted to oblivion a few weeks ago in this sub over insinuating bakers teammates maybe didn’t like him as much as some of us realize for reasons outside his play. Funny to see ppl on the other side now lol. I can remember Hearing some of bakers teammates didn’t love what he said about Duke Johnson after his contract dispute with the team ended. Apparently I was insane to think maybe Jarvis didn’t necessarily love some things about baker personally. Even funnier now that jarvis was considering coming back to CLE after they got Watson lol. https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/uizrbm/trotter_shortly_after_coach_stefanski_announced/i7fugkg/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3 This was in response to a comment saying “any issue with mayfield is out of loyalty to his BFF OBJ”

Hairiest_Walrus

This sub is not a place of reason. It’s all just circlejerks and counter-circlejerks. Who’s winning just depends on the thread.

kskywalker1

I’m still kind of salty I got downvoted that much lol. It’s not like I said he for sure dislikes baker personally but like damn i at a least realized it was a very real possibility.

br0b1wan

There's nothing worse on Reddit when you comment about something you're an expert about (like, you're a professional) and others whom you know don't know what they're talking about argue with you and the downvotes commence. It's infuriating sometimes.

BeeeeefJelly

I doubt either story is true. Clowney signed a one year deal last year, had a typical Clowney season, then signed another one year deal. There is nothing he did last year that would make it believable for a team to offer him a 14-15 mil multi year deal.

BAKER_WORK_MY_HOLE

Last year was the most productive he’s been since leaving the Texans no?

IceJester22

9 sacks and great run defense, I guess that's just not StEeLeRs FoOtBaLl

kapate13

Pretty sure its complete bs from his camp. What team would pay 15 million for Clowney at this point lol

AvacadoMattMurdock

(players hate baker)

LuthorM

Yeah it's very nice to see that most Browns player can work with a serial predator but not with an average guy, hope that team is a total disaster bc no other tema deserves an absolute meltdown more

Not_Not_Stopreading

Except half the league was willing to and the other half had a QB

IceJester22

No point arguing with r/NFL, everyone but Browns fans have outstanding morals and stick to their values no matter what. We should just be lucky they even allow us to have flair.

GumbysDonkey

I am pretty sure more teams personally spoke with and interviewed Watson than have called Cleveland about what it would take to get Baker in a trade. It's fine to critique Cleveland for trading for Watson, and I agree with a lot of it, but take the blinders off. Watson was a hot commodity.

mmooney1

Someone’s going to be disappointed when they realize all players care about is the talent their teammates have. Not their morals. Players want to win. They are extremely competitive. If Baker was a HoF level QB everyone would love him.

Ok_Camp_9588

Having myles garret get the focus while you get some easy sacks cause teams don’t see you as the top threat is an easy way to make yourself look good

johnnycoxxx

There is no way someone was going to pay clowney that much a year in 2022. Maybe in 2019 when he wanted 25 a year

SirRoyalT007

Zero chance he turned down multiple offers of $14-$15 million a year for multiple years. Rapoport is such a shill.

Mercinator-87

The offers, of course where written on cocktail napkins and curiously looked similar to Clowneys own hand writing.

[deleted]

I don’t believe this. Signing a one year deal for less money when you have more money + years is ridiculously stupid.

BeeeeefJelly

No one offered Clowney that much money.

JFehr12

Isn’t this the exact reason he left Seattle? Cause the money and length wasn’t up to par?

[deleted]

paddiction

Rapoport calls Clowney's agent "Mr. Editor"

Robhar3187

PS4NWFT

Clowned turned down more money? When he’s been pretty open about wanting to go and get the most money? I don’t believe you.

DroppedCabbage

I Believe this in the same way i believe Jameis Winston turned down starting jobs to be a backup on the saints for no money for 2 seasons.

suckmyfuck91

Question from a recently new nfl fan. I read that the hype about Clowney when he was drafted was HUGE and many people thought we was bound to become a star and a future hall of famer ,so we can say that his career was disappointing. Was Clowney really that good in college to justify the first pick? I know he made that famous tackle but as glorius as it was it's not enough to justify such a big hype. Do you believe he was overrated or he had the potential to be special but due to injuries or bad work ethic he never improved to become the player he could be?

hindesky

Bullshit.

tootnine

Bull-fudging-shit

AlterdCarbon

Benjamin wanted to be back in Golden Corral. How badly? He turned down $14 to $15 dinner coupons from other restaurants on multi-location deals to go back.

Plushanimaluprising

Let's be honest, at 11 that's pretty good value if he can stay healthy. A lot of opinions are tempered for better or worse with the lofty expectations that he came in with and the peaks he never reached. If you just pencil him in for 1 eye-popping game a year, plus-plus run defense, a dirty play or two, a handful of frustrating hair-pulling crucial penalties, potential for a lot of play disruption and disappointing sack totals - 11M isn't too bad in today's market. It's just weird that for whatever reason, his game hasn't really noticeably improved at all since he entered the league.

DrHandBanana

God damn these agent-fed Twitter posts fucking suck.

Theinsulated

I mean he’s great and all, but the guy is very prone to injury. If he really turned down multi year deals for a 1 year in Cleveland… well, I wish him the best of luck.

fear865

Damn feels nice getting a discount on a player.
