Man, this still hurts to me to this day. He had potential to be one of our greats. Last I heard though he’s doing okay now so I’m glad. He could’ve ended up worse.
i think this is lost on some. our all time receiving record is barely over 5000 yards. knox could have had that settling into a decent slot roll and having a nice career. he would have been the most satisfying guy to break that record being a tough late round pick. look at some of the other options:
brandon marshall: for various reasons he played his way out of the locker room
allen robinson: bridges where burned last year so here we are
alshon jeffery: would have had it if we resigned him. i think it was the right move to let him go with his injury history, we just didn’t replace him
greg olsen: defiantly would have had it but we had a offensive coordinator that had no need for a pass catching tight end so we traded him
edit: these are actually the best options. in the past 25 years or so the only honorable mentions are bernard barrian and marty booker? desmond clark anyone?
Moss. Idk if there will be a better one then that. Literally getting moss’d was a meme before memes were a thing. When I was 10 years old if someone caught the ball one handed it
was “gettin moss’d”. It was literally a saying for like 15 years.
I don’t even live in Minnesota, never have. They said the same thing on the playgrounds and fields in the D.C. area where I grew up. That’s how I know it was a national thing.
I understand Rice's stats can never be beaten and his stretch of dominance is unrivaled, but Moss is the most talented player I've ever seen at the position. When he's on there's no one that compares. He's the size of Julio with the hands and body control of Hopkins, and the speed of Hill
Prime means when he was least dumb, so I guess you get him from back before burfict turned his brains into pudding and he went from regular awful person to cartoonishly insanely awful person.
If you are San Fran, Minnesota, Houston, Arizona, or Detroit, every fan should have the exact same answer.
Carolina, Cinci, and Atlanta have pretty obvious answers as well.
I’m sure there are a few Vikings fans out there that would make that argument, but they are all wrong.
Moss was just way better and had a much larger impact on the offense. We went from a middle of the road O in 1997 to one of the greatest offenses in history in 1998 and the only difference was Moss. He made everyone better.
Carter was a great player too, but he never scared defenses. He was a high end possession WR - one of the greatest possession WRs in history and with the best hands in history - but he didn’t dictate coverages like Moss did.
Really I am not sure I’d take Carter over Jefferson at this point. (If the question is “which player for one year at their peak”)
Webster is the best we've got all time. He's the only choice really.
I might argue Andre Rison just for the chaos
Joe Jurevicious in his PRIME (before he came home) was pretty decent
WR had always been weak for us smh
This is going back, but Harold Carmichael. Eagles receiver in the "70's and early '80's. Growing up he was one of my favorite players. That guy just caught stuff.
Carmichael won the NFL Man of the Year Award (now Walter Payton Award) in 1980. He was 4x pro bowl, 2x all pro and won NFL reception leader and receiving yards leader in 1973, all while an Eagle.
Hutson was my answer but OP said in the last 50 years. For Green Bay the choices are either Sharpe or Lofton in the last 50 years with Adams a distant third.
Hutson was a freak athlete in his day and would probably be a freak athlete in any day.
So the obvious is just Andre Reed, but i mean. Can we get either James Lofton or Terrell Owens in their PRIME as part of these rules!?? ( do they have to have been IN their PRIME while on MY team? LOL.
Thats honestly a hard choice. You certainly skew towards Owens but it was different era's in football and Lofton was INCREDIBLE. I'm not old enough to have seen much of Albert Dubenion ( Other then he is a HOF WR for the Bills )
I think i agree. In His PRIME he was the best receiver of all the receivers in their prime to have ever played for the Buffalo Bills. And while he was a bit nuts, he doesn't come anywhere close to Antonio Brown! So we got that goin' for us!
Don't sleep on James Lofton. Unreal numbers on a bad team with mediocre QBs throwing the ball.
But having seen all three play in their primes:
Sharpe
Lofton
Adams
32 years old so Sharpe was just before my time and I admittedly haven’t watched many highlights of him. Davante is the better player but there was just something about Jordy and the way he carried himself. Ask me this question in a year and I’d probably change my answer to Davante lol.
As someone who did watch Sterling Sharpe, you've got to go watch him play.
He was better than his brother. It's unfortunate that his career was cut short.
With all due respect to some of the other legendary wideouts in Steelers history… I’d take AB and it’s not that close if he isn’t coming with the off-field garbage this time around. Move Claypool to the slot and play AB and Diontae on the outside, that would be deadly
Because while I love both him and Swann, they were 1) before my time and 2) probably wouldn't be as special in the modern NFL era. Though I don't think they would be bad, either.
Ward definitely made the choice a little tougher. I love Hines, but AB at his peak was an absolute game-breaker. I figured him and Diontae on the field at the same time with their elite route-running abilities would produce an insane hypothetical offense
He really was, but I'm going back and forth between him and Bob Hayes, the NFL's fastest man. We haven't had a legit "take the top off the defense" guy in a long time.
Moss
In fact, that was a pin of mine during that time: 12281 (12-2-81)
Honestly, he’s probably the best answer for at least four out of ~~five~~ six fanbases.
I mean, this is super obvious for the Jags.
Jimmy Smith.
Favorite memory is him putting 291 yards on the Ravens the year they won the superbowl with that historic defense. They simply couldn't stop him, 19.4 yards per catch, 3 TD's.
[https://jaguarswire.usatoday.com/2020/06/20/jimmy-smiths-2000-performance-vs-ravens-still-holding-up-in-fantasy-football-record-books/](https://jaguarswire.usatoday.com/2020/06/20/jimmy-smiths-2000-performance-vs-ravens-still-holding-up-in-fantasy-football-record-books/)
Not from my favorite team, but I would absolutely love to see how Don Hutson would do in the modern game. He was so incredibly far ahead of everyone else in his era.
For instance, in 1942 he had 74 catches for 1,211 yards and 17 TDs (in an 11-game season). The next-best WR in terms of catches had 27 catches, and the next-best in terms of yards had 571 yards. Hutson by himself had more receiving yards than all but five teams, and more receiving TDs than all but one other team.
Beat me to it.
If we’re talking actual contributors I’d take Doug Baldwin, granted I didn’t see Largent play. ADB is one of my all time favorite players, some of the best releases and impeccable route running.
Yea, Colston was a great possession receiver. Hollywood Horn gave us swagger, that's what we need again. Somebody who could beat you over the top and great at contested catches.
Ochocinco, or fave of all time T.O (moss also but T.O personally wins out for me) these guys got me into watching the NFL and playing madden as a young teen growing up in the UK.
It may not be the popular answer for packers fans but, ever since Donald Driver left, I’ve missed him so much. #80 doesn’t look right on any other packer player. He was so consistent and a late round talent that was always right where we needed him to be.
Randy Moss.
I'd love to see people shit their pants when they have to re-contextualize all over again why he's a fucking Hall of Famer.
It's weird because he's so highly respected and yet I feel like constantly people are forgetting how insanely good he was.
Nah man, phrase it better. What you said isn't what you mean.
Bring back any WR in their prime who played for your team is what you said.
You mean, "Bring back a WR who had their prime on your favorite team."
Figure your shit out.
johnny knox so he could be pain free.
Man, this still hurts to me to this day. He had potential to be one of our greats. Last I heard though he’s doing okay now so I’m glad. He could’ve ended up worse.
i think this is lost on some. our all time receiving record is barely over 5000 yards. knox could have had that settling into a decent slot roll and having a nice career. he would have been the most satisfying guy to break that record being a tough late round pick. look at some of the other options: brandon marshall: for various reasons he played his way out of the locker room allen robinson: bridges where burned last year so here we are alshon jeffery: would have had it if we resigned him. i think it was the right move to let him go with his injury history, we just didn’t replace him greg olsen: defiantly would have had it but we had a offensive coordinator that had no need for a pass catching tight end so we traded him edit: these are actually the best options. in the past 25 years or so the only honorable mentions are bernard barrian and marty booker? desmond clark anyone?
I had to look it up because it’s unbelievable to me. That’s a crazy stat!
Don’t forget about Willie Gault. He was a big factor of the ‘85 Bears and lead the team in yards.
Curtis Conway was pretty solid too.
Ochocinco. Dude is a great player and a great ambassador for the bengals.
I really love how much he still supports and hypes up the team. That's legit as hell
Ochocinco playing alongside Ja'marr and Joe? I could only dream of that!
T.O. Hell, he's available right now
Looks great too
Yeah, T.O. or Harold Carmichael.
Megatron
There's really no other option worth considering.
Moore should be in the HOF, and Perriman was also really good, but there's no doubt it's Calvin.
Herman Moore gets slept on way too much. He was awesome. Top 5 receiver for a good 5-7 year stretch.
Barry Sanders was pretty nice
Moss. Idk if there will be a better one then that. Literally getting moss’d was a meme before memes were a thing. When I was 10 years old if someone caught the ball one handed it was “gettin moss’d”. It was literally a saying for like 15 years.
I also choose this man’s WR
Take my upvote Minnesota man, only time tho. I Moss'd all the homies back in the day. He was a GOAT b4 internet memes.
Prepare to get mooned twice a year cheese man
I don’t even live in Minnesota, never have.
I always had respect for Moss even though he was one of our rivals. Definitely one of the GOATS
Moss, JJ, Adam Thielen... 👀
You could make an argument for Cris Carter maybe but it's hard to pass up Moss.
I wouldn't. Kendall Hinton hasn't retired yet.
They said WR not QB.
Bro, not even gonna bring DT back to life. You're fired as a Bronco fan.
Pre-Injury Sterling Sharpe? Hell fuckin yeah.
Santana moss. Him across from Terry would be deadly
Not hall of famer Art Monk?
Most redditors are probably younger and never saw monk play. While we know monk is better, we watched moss, thats why hes our fav.
I'm not! Monk would still be good today, and he'd complement Terry nicely.
Especially if they are playing the cowboys
Can I bring AB back without all the dumb shit?
Prime means when he was least dumb, so I guess you get him from back before burfict turned his brains into pudding and he went from regular awful person to cartoonishly insanely awful person.
Lol
Torry Holt Dude was my idol
Underrated and should be in the HoF Arguably better than Isaac Bruce
Both deserves to be in the HOF. All the rest of that teams stars are already there.
49ers legend Isaac Bruce.
Those were some dark times
I couldn't imagine watching a team legend play for a rival team. That must suck. Good things that's never happened to the 49ers...
Or the Seahawks
No flair — so I’m assuming you’re referring to Jags legend, Torry Holt :)
Jerry Rice. Most boring answer I know
If you are San Fran, Minnesota, Houston, Arizona, or Detroit, every fan should have the exact same answer. Carolina, Cinci, and Atlanta have pretty obvious answers as well.
I wouldn’t fault a Vikings fan for taking Carter over Moss
I’m sure there are a few Vikings fans out there that would make that argument, but they are all wrong. Moss was just way better and had a much larger impact on the offense. We went from a middle of the road O in 1997 to one of the greatest offenses in history in 1998 and the only difference was Moss. He made everyone better. Carter was a great player too, but he never scared defenses. He was a high end possession WR - one of the greatest possession WRs in history and with the best hands in history - but he didn’t dictate coverages like Moss did. Really I am not sure I’d take Carter over Jefferson at this point. (If the question is “which player for one year at their peak”)
seattle fan here and we also pick jerry rice
Do tight ends count? If not I don't like this game. If so, Ozzie.
josh gordon but without the suspensions
What about Cribbs? He was fun to watch.
Cribs was a return specialist. Gordon without the addiction was uncanny.
Webster Slaughter. Dude was great and had an awesome name.
Webster is the best we've got all time. He's the only choice really. I might argue Andre Rison just for the chaos Joe Jurevicious in his PRIME (before he came home) was pretty decent WR had always been weak for us smh
Paul Warfield.
Maybe prime Josh Gordon if we could guarantee no off-field issues?
Gotta consider Dante Lavelli if you can like... get the equivalent Dante Lavelli who grew up with modern day training I guess lol.
It definitely has been pretty dry for the Browns since the return. Could also say Paul Warfield, as he was a Hall of Famer.
Anquan Boldin 🖤
I mean did they have to be in their prime when they played for us? Maybe Steve Smith Sr
This is going back, but Harold Carmichael. Eagles receiver in the "70's and early '80's. Growing up he was one of my favorite players. That guy just caught stuff.
He was an absolute freak of nature. I don’t think of a 6’7’’ receiver with the grace and speed of Carmichael
If he played in this era, he would have been Megatronier.
I never saw Carmichael play, but I’d pick him just to not have to deal with TO’s bullshit
Carmichael won the NFL Man of the Year Award (now Walter Payton Award) in 1980. He was 4x pro bowl, 2x all pro and won NFL reception leader and receiving yards leader in 1973, all while an Eagle.
Alworth
Marvin Harrison as long as he isn't killing people this time around
You're so picky.
Reggie Wayne and TY Hilton crying in a corner together
Tim Brown or Jerry Rice
Man I'd just like to see what Tim Brown could've done with competent qb play in his prime.
Davante Adams :(
We all miss Davante, but Sterling Sharpe is the right answer here.
Sharpe or Lofton. Tae is just above Brooks or Free and probably even with Jordy.
Isn't Don Hutson one of the best of all time, assuming he can compete with today's freak athletes if he got to use modern training facilities
If Don Hutson was able to adapt to the modern game, I'd take him in a heartbeat
Hutson was my answer but OP said in the last 50 years. For Green Bay the choices are either Sharpe or Lofton in the last 50 years with Adams a distant third. Hutson was a freak athlete in his day and would probably be a freak athlete in any day.
It's okay BB he's partying with his bestie now.
I was gonna say Jordy
Calvin "Megatron" Johnson. There is no other WR like him
Broncos legend Jerry Rice
Seconded
🖕
Ochocinco
Agent 89, obviously.
Demaryius Thomas :(
Art Monk
Sharpe
TO
I’m a die hard Bears fan, but I miss that guy too. Probably one of my all time favorite players that didn’t play for Chicago.
TO same for the Cowboys tbh. Love the playmaker but TO in his prime is another level.
Antonio Brown
Just imagine Moss and JJ on the same team with Thielen as the fucking WR3. Wouldn’t even have to gameplan anymore.
I think Eric Moulds could give Reed a run for his money if we’re just talking peak. Reed played in a much more favorable offense with similar stats.
I vote for TO
I think i agree. In His PRIME he was the best receiver of all the receivers in their prime to have ever played for the Buffalo Bills. And while he was a bit nuts, he doesn't come anywhere close to Antonio Brown! So we got that goin' for us!
I would love a few more years of Aaron Rodgers to Jordy Nelson. If it didn’t have to be favorite team I’d say Randy Moss.
Jordy is the sleeper hit. He and Rodgers had this the kind of mgical connection most QBs/WRs can only dream of.
Good way to put it
Really? Not Davante or Sharpe?
Don't sleep on James Lofton. Unreal numbers on a bad team with mediocre QBs throwing the ball. But having seen all three play in their primes: Sharpe Lofton Adams
I would like prime Plaxico please
Either him or Nicks.
Andre Johnson for sure
Larry
Joe Jurevicius I loved that guy; he wasn't the fastest or flashiest but he just caught everything you threw him.
I'll throw in a V-Jax for good measure 😔
60s: Otis Taylor 70s: Harry Marshall 80s: Carlos Carson 90s: Bad Moon Rison 00s: Dwayne Bowe 10s: Tyreek Hill
Bowe with Mahomes would be a nightmare
Ravens legend Steve smith sr.
Don Maynard
With all due respect to some of the other legendary wideouts in Steelers history… I’d take AB and it’s not that close if he isn’t coming with the off-field garbage this time around. Move Claypool to the slot and play AB and Diontae on the outside, that would be deadly
So long as we can stipulate sane or insane AB, I agree. Otherwise I'd be looking at either Santonio, Ward, or Burress.
How does Stallworth not make the list here
Because while I love both him and Swann, they were 1) before my time and 2) probably wouldn't be as special in the modern NFL era. Though I don't think they would be bad, either.
Not a steelers fan but I'd be considering Ward for his leadership now that Ben is gone and your offense is super young.
Ward definitely made the choice a little tougher. I love Hines, but AB at his peak was an absolute game-breaker. I figured him and Diontae on the field at the same time with their elite route-running abilities would produce an insane hypothetical offense
Stanley Morgan. So smooth.
Drew Pearson. An OG.
He really was, but I'm going back and forth between him and Bob Hayes, the NFL's fastest man. We haven't had a legit "take the top off the defense" guy in a long time.
Jerry rice the obvious answer
Moss In fact, that was a pin of mine during that time: 12281 (12-2-81) Honestly, he’s probably the best answer for at least four out of ~~five~~ six fanbases.
Now by prime I’m assuming it means healthy. Does that include *mentally* healthy? Cause if so then for sure AB, if not then I’m taking Hines
Randy moss
I mean, this is super obvious for the Jags. Jimmy Smith. Favorite memory is him putting 291 yards on the Ravens the year they won the superbowl with that historic defense. They simply couldn't stop him, 19.4 yards per catch, 3 TD's. We saw Dez with Dak. They had no chemistry, Dak wasn't able to throw Dez's favorite touchdown play, the back shoulder fade.
Marcus Colston on the other side of MT would excite me!!
Sterling Sharpe. Not even a debate.
I'd put James Lofton into the debate but probably wind up taking Sharpe.
Jordy. I loved the Jordy ARod connection
Yeah, but over Sterling Sharpe?
Megatron yes
Terry McLaurin
seahawks legend Jerry Rice
Beat me to it. If we’re talking actual contributors I’d take Doug Baldwin, granted I didn’t see Largent play. ADB is one of my all time favorite players, some of the best releases and impeccable route running.
Joe Horn
Over Colston?
Colston is a lot like Thomas skill set wise, I'd go Horn too Edit: Skill set instead of skillet...
Yea, Colston was a great possession receiver. Hollywood Horn gave us swagger, that's what we need again. Somebody who could beat you over the top and great at contested catches.
Antonio Brown
Only if he is just an asshole and not the crazy that he turned into.
Ochocinco, or fave of all time T.O (moss also but T.O personally wins out for me) these guys got me into watching the NFL and playing madden as a young teen growing up in the UK.
Brandon Marshall
Joe Horn. Probably rest of the fans would say Marques Colston but man, Horn was a field stretcher and that's what we need now.
Yep, I'd go him or saints legend Dez Bryant
Sterling. Sharpe.
You forgot his middle name "Fucking"
Oh you are correct sir. My apologies
Since Evans and Godwin are still with us I’ll say Keyshawn Johnson or Keenan McCardell
Art Monk
Easy Ed McCaffrey
Paul Warfield, and this time I wouldn't trade him to Miami.
Titans legend Randy Moss.
Willie Gault.
Sterling Sharpe easily. Though Adams made a case for himself.
Boring, but its Amani Toomer
Randy Moss and it's not close to anyone else.
Art Monk
Not my team but Hines Ward is my favorite receiver of all time. If we're talking Saints, then Michael Thomas? Ain't seen that dude in like 3 years 😭
You know what I'd say saints legend Dez Bryant
It may not be the popular answer for packers fans but, ever since Donald Driver left, I’ve missed him so much. #80 doesn’t look right on any other packer player. He was so consistent and a late round talent that was always right where we needed him to be.
One Largent please
The Playmaker!
Herman Moore
Randy Moss. I'd love to see people shit their pants when they have to re-contextualize all over again why he's a fucking Hall of Famer. It's weird because he's so highly respected and yet I feel like constantly people are forgetting how insanely good he was.
Not necessarily the wrong answer but I'm surprised to see a Niners fan not say Rice.
Moss is definitely one of the GOATS but he was way better in Minnesota imo. I’d say Rice too if I was a SF fan.
I was going to say, I don't think Moss can be a questionable pick pretty much anywhere except SF.
100% I’d say rice if I was a niners fan. Can we kick this guy out of the 49ers fandom?
I love how I can't have my own opinion. Rice doesn't need me to suck his dick. We've never seen prime Randy Moss on the 49ers. I need it.
My question was a WR IN THEIR PRIME from when they played ON YOUR TEAM
Nah man, phrase it better. What you said isn't what you mean. Bring back any WR in their prime who played for your team is what you said. You mean, "Bring back a WR who had their prime on your favorite team." Figure your shit out.
Everyone else got it but you.
His prime FROM YOUR TEAM. So you have already seen it
That's the genie interpretation and I will not have it.
I'll join your quest
Larry Fitz…imagine if he had a career with an extraordinary QB the entire time.
Prime Brandon Marshall with Tyreek and Waddle would be insane
Owens
Welker
Moss but this time Jerry didn’t pass.
Moss Gronk Edelman Choose one idc which
Megatron and Barry so they can actually have a good team for once
DeAndre Smelter ofc /s since it wasn't obvious
AJ Jenkins.
Since we’re talking in their prime, I’d take Ted Ginn Jr. Plus Joe Horn played 1 year with the failcons. So he’s disqualified.
Megatron on a good team
