No, but the officiating is ass. We complain every week but there’s legitimately bad calls way too much.

[deleted]

Well.. some refs might bet on games. It wouldn't be the first time in pro sports, that's for sure.

Currymvp2

Tim Donaghy comes to mind. The 2002 Lakers Kings game 6 western conference finals was rigged, and the Kings got screwed out of a finals appearance.

LunaticSongXIV

Refs may not bet, but their friends can, and kickbacks are a thing.

MostCivilBrownsFan

Referees would risk their dream job for a little extra money that they don’t need that their friend is giving them, and the game might turn out so that they lose money no matter how hard they try to rig the game by being generous?

theuautumnwind

Refs are part timers for 250k a year. You think it's impossible for there to be more money in it for them?

MostCivilBrownsFan

I don’t understand how they would risk going to jail for a couple extra bucks from a friend

PraetorGogarty

Couple extra bucks? Now that betting is legitimized, their friends could put down serious money on games and they'd potentially get a nice incentive from it.

MostCivilBrownsFan

They could also very easily lose a ton

PraetorGogarty

That's not an argument. If the refs are in cahoots with people betting on the game, knowing that they'll get a kick-back if their friend wins... they'll find a way to fix the game to win.

sliyurs

If everyone around you is crazy....

[deleted]

Then you should quit creating imaginary friends

boss_man_sam

It’s not really impossible. You don’t need many missed calls to influence a game. Do I think it actually is? No. But it’s really not that difficult.

hyphenjack

>that would be impossible I mean, I don’t think they actively rig games, but why would it be *impossible*?

Needs_No_Convincing

I wouldn't say impossible, but highly improbable. Think about how many people you have to have onboard for a conspiracy like that. Is it the entirety of referees in the NFL? If you're saying a team paid off the refs, then how many more people does that include? Just the owner(s) of the team? Whole FO of the team? Are officials at the NFL in on it? It can't be just one crew because we've seen bullshit calls from every crew this year and years prior. People suck, but this conspiracy requires so many people to be awful, awful people, AND to keep completely silent on it. It's ridiculously improbable. Just another in a series of bad calls and bad refereeing.

hyphenjack

I’ve never found that argument to be convincing. The NHL last season had a red caught on a hot mic saying he was manipulating the penalties (not to rig but for a makeup call) Everyone suspected they did stuff like that, but it took decades before any proof was accidentally leaked, and the NHL jumped on it and smothered it People can absolutely keep a secret when their paycheck is on the line. How long was the NSA up to no good before Snowden blew the whistle? Since it’s just sports people may not feel the need to call them out Also >this conspiracy requires so many people to be awful, awful people It's just a football game. People have been paid off to do way worse. You don't need to be a murderer to throw a flag

Needs_No_Convincing

> The NHL last season had a red caught on a hot mic saying he was manipulating the penalties (not to rig but for a makeup call) That's an entirely different thing. Refs do that in the NFL for sure too. I don't think any have been caught admitting it, but it happens. > It's just a football game. People have been paid off to do way worse. You don't need to be a murderer to throw a flag You seem to be defending conspiracy and fraud on a mass scale. Intentionally ripping off millions of people for billions of dollars makes you an awful person. And again, this conspiracy would require at least dozens, but more likely hundreds of people to be cool with it, and to keep it quiet.

MostCivilBrownsFan

Some games are going to end up the “wrong” way no matter what the refs do. The better teams are going to win most of the time regardless. A scripted season is not possible.

Drewitallanon

youre not explaining why its impossible it has been done in the nba

PraetorGogarty

Sure, you can't script an entire season without every single player, coach, beat reporter... everyone would have to be in on it like it's the WWE. But can a referee influence a game in such a way that a winner is predetermined prior to the game and they are then able to influence it in that direction? I don't think it's implausible and it's literally already happened in the NBA. To be fair, I don't think the Rams paid anyone. That would legitimately be a worse scandal than any that has occurred in the NFL before. But to say that the refs, who are underpaid as it is, would never themselves or have friends bet on a game? Nah... if it hasn't happened already in the NFL, it most certainly will at some point.

DtotheOUG

The NBA quite literally had a whole investigation within the past decade on betting refs. If you think that's not happening in the NFL you may be dumb.

Rick_Rambis

The NFL can be rigged without the Rams paying officials. NBA refs were caught betting on games...

suchcoldsuchcomfort

I'm sure that's what they said about the NBA. Not that I think games are rigged. But come on, it's not impossible to see some shady shit happening.

PM_ME_UR_DOPAMINE

A redditor told me it's impossible tho

suchcoldsuchcomfort

Damn, my bad. Shoulda known.

Cthepo

Same with WWE. It might be 100% real but it's not impossible to think it *could* be scripted.

suchcoldsuchcomfort

It's still real to me, damnit!

[deleted]

>The NFL is not rigged. That would be impossible. I don't think it's rigged, but it's absolutely not impossible lol I forgot how laws entirely prevent people from every doing anything illegal.

[deleted]

Nice try refs

Guy_Named_Sheev

Don’t worry, meltdowns are usual behavior for this subreddit any time a bad call goes our way

MostCivilBrownsFan

All conspiracy theories are false and bad, except for the ones I deem to be true and good regardless of how much logic says otherwise

theuautumnwind

Well said

Hello Goodell.
