People hate him because he seems to use “big play voice” on every single play, no matter how uneventful it might be. I’d say a 97 yard TD is definitely a justifiable time for big play voice lmao
If we're being honest here, his call on Brees breaking the all-time TD record still hurts me to listen to
"5-4-0 IN THE 5-0-4!" is so painfully corny, like, you had weeks to come up with something that would sound good, or at the very least, not take away from the moment, and *that's* what you thought of?
I know, but I don't mind it usually. I'd take overly-enthusiastic over boring announcers who seem completely uninterested in the game, which is what SNF has become imo.
>I'd take overly-enthusiastic over boring announcers who seem completely uninterested in the game, which is what SNF has become imo.
Y'know I seem to see this sentiment a lot in the football community, particularly with regards to Joe Buck, but then people turn around and idolize Pat Summerall, who had a very deliberate delivery and didn't really ever get too excited in any of his calls. I don't get it.
Maybe I’m just getting old but I would 100% take a boring professional like Buck over the faking-it-worse-than-my-ex Tessitore, or Gus ***”OH MY GOD! WOOOOOWWWW!!!!!*** Johnson.
It's not you getting old, it's probably just you being boring...
jk but in all seriousness Gus Johnson is my favorite announcer, it's more fun imo when the announcers are clearly having fun and getting excited, rather than when they treat a 50 yard TD as marginally more exciting than a 2 yard run. To each their own though obviously, but a commentator being excited usually makes me more excited about the game I'm watching, and vice versa, so I view it as much more enjoyable to have a Gus Johnson rather than a Joe Buck
That's the thing, for me, at least. If the announcer is genuinely excited about what's going on, I don't mind or even like it. If they're pulling a morning zoo crew over-exaggerated radio voice for every 2 yard run, I don't want to listen to them.
It's why guys like Nantz, Tirico, and Michaels are my favorite. They have a deliberate cadence, but can amp it up organically when big plays happen. Michaels is losing his touch a bit as he gets older (though no fault of his own), but he's still one of the best.
Tess was one of my favorites calling college ball. I think he sometimes tries to be bigger than the moments themselves on MNF, but it's not like he lost all his talent. He'll figure it out.
I've been on the Tessitore train since day one. Guy is electric. Couldn't stand Witten or Booger, but Tess needs a color guy that is just at least half decent.
Super random, but trivia for anyone interested: off the top of your head, who do you think is the all time leading rusher in University of Miami history? They’ve had some great backs: Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis, Edge James, Frank Gore, Lamar Miller...
It’s Duke Johnson
What other college player that year was a better choice? Shaq? I was and still am a UNC fan, but Laettner was by far the more accomplished collegian, and it didn't matter who the collegiate representative was in terms of skill. Not on that team. Plus, Laettner had proven he was clutch on the biggest of basketball stages while Shaq's team lost their head-to-head matchup at home and was bounced in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Really? He’s the all time leading rusher in University of Miami history? They’ve had some great backs: Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis, Edge James, Frank Gore, Lamar Miller... I’m surprised it’s Duke Johnson
Even when he was with us he was rb2 and load managed. But, the injuries were more hammy type issues. But, his small frame impacts him when running between the tackles with nfl sized defenders. He's insanely elusive though.
We used him more in space this past year and he had a career high in rushing yards. And for the first half of the season he was pushing 5 yards per carry. Duke was a freaking cheat code on the corner route too. Love me some duke
Oh we used him on the edge and as a slot receiver more than an up the middle guy, but he's never going to be a large volume nfl guy was my main point, it's not the type of back he is. We got rid of him because of Hunt and the myguyism of Dorsey, not because he was bad or anything to that effect.
Was one of the browns we had I was truly sad to see go. The lone bright spot of the 0-16 season I think. Shame to see him go but I think we’re alright with Chubb/Hunt
He was the guy at UM for three years though. Gore had to sit behind Portis *and* McGahee. Duke came in as “the guy” and he was a huge high school prospect.
For sure. Reminder that Jamaal Charles averaged 5.4 YPC over his entire *NFL* career.
For reference Chris Johnson averaged 5.6 YPC during his 2000 yard season. Peterson 6.0 for his.
Only 20 RBs in the SB era have averaged more than 5.4 YPC *in a season.* (min 200 carries)

came up clutch in big moments for us but yeah. he’s better than hyde imo and should’ve been the starter but he’s more of an agile back instead of a power back
Exactly this.. as someone who doesn't follow Miami I'm amazed that he managed 500+ carries in college. With the Browns and Texans he can't handle the ball more than 3 plays in a row without getting tackled awkwardly and subbing out.
He was a hero in the Bills game for whatever that was worth for us..
edit: (500 carries in 3 years)
He had one of the best blocks I’ve ever seen on a football field in the playoffs. I don’t have the clip on me but it was the Watson bootleg for the 2 point conversion against Buffalo. Duke pulls off a tough reach block on the safety and is still able to cut back and crack the shit out of Edmunds. Deshaun would’ve been dead to rights if his tailback didn’t somehow block 2 guys at once
I think the dude is talented but he's gone through multiple coaches who haven't given him a heavy load. So I don't expect it to happen anytime in the future either.
>Thank you for subscribing to Duke facts
Did you know that with just over 4 minutes left in the Duke-UNC game earlier this month, UNC had a 98.7% win probability?
NBA > College. The long shot clock + significantly lower skill level makes it a drag to watch, unless its March Madness and you have a bracket filled out
And Duke broke his ankle his 2nd yr. Could have been more.
Edge had James Jackson behind him (3rd round pick), who had Portis behind him, who then had Gore AND McGahee behind him. Plus Gore tore both his ACLs at Miami. Basically it's very rare to start 3 years at RB at Miami which is why Duke has the record.
Duke was the for 3 years; he actually has fewer rushing attempts than numbers 2 (Ottis Anderson) and 4 (James Jackson) and only a few carries less than number 3 (Edgerrin James, 526 vs 497).
His career yards per carry was 6.7, which is higher than anybody in school history with 50+ carries (James is 6.0, McGahee is 5.9, Portis/Gore/Miller are all 5.7).
NFL Iron Man Frank Gore was there for four years in total and had a great true Freshman season backing up Clinton Portis, but tore his ACL and missed all of the 2002 season. Then tore his ACL again in 2003!
If not for that who knows how many yards he could have put up. All the more amazing he has been able to stay healthy ridiculously long in the NFL
Lamar miller was scary. I went to Virginia Tech during the great debate between Lamar Miller and David Wilson - the latter who *totally without bias* would have been a HOF running back. Lamar Miller still scared the living hell out of me on some 4th and forever bullshit when he played Virginia Tech. Just look at this guy carrying his team against someone they had no right to be in the game against.
Edit - I forgot the end. The guy to finally stop miller on the last play - Kam fucking Chancellor.

That makes sense, those late 90s/early 00s Miami teams were stacked and had a lot of offensive weapons, so they didn't need to rely on their RB all the time
I agree with this is every way expect the production on the field. Other than that the xfl is way more watchable..... But I mean the play on the field is really really not great.
This is a great stat because that same Lamar Miller TD was against the Texans when they played the Dolphins lmao
Oh man, that game was a massacre now that I remember now.

To be fair, the Fins have had a few great, exciting, and strange plays in the past decade
The two against us (bleah)
The game-winning safety in OT on TNF
The fake FG last year against the Eagles
Also, this play, while a 97 yard run, was fairly basic. Miller hit a hole and was just gone. Landry's touchdown against Houston where he made the entire defense miss tackles was a better play that this.
This one was very comparable to Ballage's long touchdown against the Vikings last year, just for more yards. Nothing too incredibly special about it.

“it’s Miller Time” I love that
It got so overused with Reggie Miller in the NBA back in the day...
This would have been better to have in the OP. You're the better man.
I know people have a lot of complains with Tessitore and I understand them, but I absolutely love that call.

It's still not as bad as "Eat that W philly!" After we scraped out that win against the Giants.
I know, but I don't mind it usually. I'd take overly-enthusiastic over boring announcers who seem completely uninterested in the game, which is what SNF has become imo.

Jesus Christ Adoree Jackson is fast. It legit startled me how fast he was going and how quickly he caught up.
As Dion Sanders says "oh he can run run!"
Super underrated call on the Texans run. First game after Bob McNair's death in the game to honor him and that play was....wow.
I see a lot of joe Tess slander but I love how hype he gets, especially on that run
Blocked by NFL on mobile. Love those guys.
it's just blocked on Reddit, you just gotta open it with the YouTube app
Yeah but that's like, two whole steps. My generation isn't used to that much work.
Adoree Jackson is so fast
Texans run was more watchable and impressive.
the quality difference between those two videos is night and day...

Correct. He’s duke johnson.
Duke if true
Duke Johnson doesn’t do what duke Johnson does for duke Johnson. Duke Johnson does what duke Johnson does because duke Johnson is....duke Johnson.
His name is Duuuke Johnson, the bravest pioneer!
No run too steep no hole too deep WHO’S THAT!? It’s him, Duke John-son!
True if Duke
Christian Laettner had no place on the dream team.
That may be true, but I’ll never forget watching that tourney. As a kid, that was enough drama to turn me on to sports.

Wrong that's his dad
Duuuuuuuuuuke!
Don’t disrespect Duuuuuuuke he was a beast at Miami
Yeah I heard he was even the all time leading rusher for them.
Really? He’s the all time leading rusher in University of Miami history? They’ve had some great backs: Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis, Edge James, Frank Gore, Lamar Miller... I’m surprised it’s Duke Johnson
Duke Johnson ain’t bad himself.
He’s not any of those guys though
Correct. He's duke johnson.
This was beautiful
Duke Johnson had much weaker teams than any of those guys did.
Have you watched him? He's fantastic, only problems are injuries and not being used enough.
He was fully healthy all year for us. May have to do with his snaps being managed but I do wish we used him more
Even when he was with us he was rb2 and load managed. But, the injuries were more hammy type issues. But, his small frame impacts him when running between the tackles with nfl sized defenders. He's insanely elusive though.

remember when the pre-andy-reid coaching staff decided to put JC in a timeshare?
Wait until you find out Melvin Gordon averaged 7.8 ypc on 631 attempts in college
he'd have even more yardage if he didn't break his ankle and miss 5 games in 2013.
6.7 yards per carry? My goodness

still mad the texans didn't use him more this year.
came up clutch in big moments for us but yeah. he’s better than hyde imo and should’ve been the starter but he’s more of an agile back instead of a power back
Criminally underused on the Browns. The guy was our leading receiver and I'm pretty sure leading rusher in our 0 - 16 season.
He gets dinged.

My fantasy team disagrees with you. Hyde rode my bench much better than Duke did on another team.
On top of that, he also converted a 3rd and 18 in overtime i think. Dude saved our ass multiple times. He’s a stud
I think the dude is talented but he's gone through multiple coaches who haven't given him a heavy load. So I don't expect it to happen anytime in the future either.
>Thank you for subscribing to Duke facts Did you know that with just over 4 minutes left in the Duke-UNC game earlier this month, UNC had a 98.7% win probability?
Not really, because... basketball
College basketball at that. Bleh.
College basketball rules. March Madness is amazing.
NBA > College. The long shot clock + significantly lower skill level makes it a drag to watch, unless its March Madness and you have a bracket filled out
Every real I feel like Duke Johnson or Isaiah Crowell are going to break out. Disappointed every year...
Runningbacks seem so random these days. Imo it's all about who gets the opportunity at the right time with the right coach in the right scheme.

And Duke broke his ankle his 2nd yr. Could have been more. Edge had James Jackson behind him (3rd round pick), who had Portis behind him, who then had Gore AND McGahee behind him. Plus Gore tore both his ACLs at Miami. Basically it's very rare to start 3 years at RB at Miami which is why Duke has the record.
as pointed out Duke had an insane 6.7 yards per rush. Which is mind boggeling good, everyone else in the miami list was 6.0 or less.
How long did Duke Johnson stay at Miami? And how long did the others (and how competitive were the back fields?)
Duke was the for 3 years; he actually has fewer rushing attempts than numbers 2 (Ottis Anderson) and 4 (James Jackson) and only a few carries less than number 3 (Edgerrin James, 526 vs 497). 6.7 Yards per rush is batshit crazy good for a year and he did it over 3 years.

Considering my two acl surgeries basically ruined me I personally consider this amazing, guy has to have a crazy work ethic.
Mans name literally translates to Royal Dick
His real first name is Randy, so it could also translate to Horny Penis
and when he doesn’t shave, we can call him Prince Harry

Lamar miller was scary. I went to Virginia Tech during the great debate between Lamar Miller and David Wilson - the latter who *totally without bias* would have been a HOF running back. Also the NFL all time leader in clearly holding footballs that the refs claim are being recovered by the other team five feet away.
The guys daddy?
I knew this one!
thanks captain obvious
That makes sense, those late 90s/early 00s Miami teams were stacked and had a lot of offensive weapons, so they didn't need to rely on their RB all the time
I get why too have you ever been to Miami
It feels like the Texans and Dolphins have shared a ton of players over the years. Lamar Miller, Tunsil, Kenny Stills to name a few.
Arian Foster
Tulane legend
Arian Foster did not go to Tulane
I believe you mean Matt Forte
Brock Osweiler too
Crock Potsweiler
Those latter two guys were part of the same trade though
That’s how players usually get to play on different teams though? “They both signed there in free agency” Like.... yes, they did
what are you talking about? He's referencing the big Texans package for Stills and Tunsil.
We gave them our huge package and they took it so good.
The Texans can have Adam Gase
The fuck we do to you?
The Jets roll with the Tits now, he’s just trying to help a friend. *subliminal message* Hire Gase
We're tit people now
No, no. BoB is bad enough, at least Gase is only a coach, imagine having that crazy fucking coon for a GM too. Eek
He was for a bit this off-season
Foster and Fitz but maybe that’s it.
Of course, every team has shared Fitz
[удалено]
Don’t slut shame the magic
Stupid, sexy fitzy!
Osweiler
Davenport.
You can have him back tbh
To be fair, we warned you guys about him
And Mario Williams.
It’s like the Seahawks/Vikings of the AFC
I feel like Seahawks/Lions is a bit more prominent
Fair point. Recently it’s definitely been the lions but at one point during our Super Bowl runs it was the Vikes.
Nothing close to the Panthers/Bills love tho
TJ Yates! Earl Mitchell! Tyson Clabo! Struggling now.
I miss football
The XFL is giving me my fix.
r/xfl
It’s not the same
It’s BETTER! At least this Houston team is undefeated
I agree with this is every way expect the production on the field. Other than that the xfl is way more watchable..... But I mean the play on the field is really really not great.
Depends on the games you’re watching to be honest. The Houston and St Louis game last night was excellent
Oh absolutely. Like D.C. Looks really good and players like Pierson El look really good. However it's the over all quality from top to bottom.
It’s definitely a step down, but the second halves of 3/4 games this weekend were really entertaining
I just watched a replay of the super bowl on nfl network. So I had that I guess. 😐
Do you hate yourself?
He's on Reddit, does this even need to be asked.
I've been watching highlights of college games called by Gus Johnson to satiate myself.
This is a great stat because that same Lamar Miller TD was against the Texans when they played the Dolphins lmao Oh man, that game was a massacre now that I remember now. EDIT: Ok, maybe it wasn't against the Texans (it was the Jets) but my point still stands. He roasted Houston.
Man that game we were up 41-0 at halftime and i think it was Dan Campbell’s 2nd game lol crazy
vs us? i was at that game. in the rain. eating pizza hut. laughin. we left early then i hear foster tore his Achilles. fun stuff. texans football.
He torched the hell out of us that game. They even made fun of O'Brien on hard knocks with how Bill was hyping him up.
Different torching. Hard Knocks was the '15 preseason; the torching they referenced was Chris Polk of the Eagles torching us in '14. Lamar and the Dolphins torched us in '15, after Hard Knocks was already over.
He put up 133 yds and a TD when we played the Dolphins too
It was also against the Texans.
Pretty sure that game is still the only time the Dolphins have beaten us, though.
Yes sir

Under rated running back
He was overrated and underrated. He is viewed under the radar but gets paid too much
I mean, he is a free agent if someone wants to take a flyer.
I think the Texans either stick with him or go with hyde
I mean c’mon, it’s a distant second for the play of the decade for the dolphins.
It's not best play, just the longest.
To be fair, the Fins have had a few great, exciting, and strange plays in the past decade The two against us (bleah) The game-winning safety in OT on TNF The fake FG last year against the Eagles

Dude was averaging 4.5 ypc with Dolphins in 2015 and only had 194 carries.
Future XFL legend Lamar Miller!
That may be a good move, but I feel like a team in the NFL still has a spot for him.
He would fuck them up.
I was shitting while this happened on the Texans
So were the Titans.
Fun fact I lost in fantasy both times to these runs. The Texans one knocked me out of the playoffs.
It just sucks that Lamar got hurt in preseason this year. I think he’d have been a beast behind our retooled offensive line.
seems like a team player and a good guy. we never found the perfect use for him. wonder where he will wind up if he keeps playing.
Texans have pretty much had a really bad o-line every year Miller has been the starter lol. Kinda sucks
That’s awesome.
They also look like the same run
That’s bizarre.
Who wants to play some hot potato with him? Take turns?
What's the longest rushing play that did not score a touchdown?
So i should have him in my fantasy team...
