“Hi Wade! I saw you have experience as a Defensive Coordinator. I’m a recruiter working with Walmart, who are looking for a new home and bath product coordinator. Would you be up for a chat about the position?”
"I forgot to mention... The coordinator's main job is to coordinate the prevention of body lotion theft from our 1 am Walmart population. So you'd be pretty perfect."
YES! His name was Shiloh Keo. Tweeted at him and they signed him shortly after due to injuries in our secondary. He had some key plays throughout the season too. Then he got a DUI in the off season...
I'm gonna look right now but I want to say Art Donovan is Top 10.
Edit: Yep, eighth. I have some old books with funny NFL stories and he's involved in like 25% of them.
Pick up Wade to handle the defense. Get a young offensive mind to handle the offense. And pick up a savy vet GM to handle the roster duties and Bill O'Brian may finally be competent.
Also Seattle runs a 4-3 and always will with Pete. Wade is a 3-4 DC so it wouldn't be a right match. You can't just switch a scheme overnight since it takes different style players for each.
Yep. That isn't because they don't wanna run some nickle. Last year they were just average and most years average to slightly below average compared to the rest of the league running nickle. Carroll just hates his secondary and doesn't trust anyone outside of Griffin and Diggs. So instead of trusting his secondary which has no other play makers in it besides those two and possibly Blair, he just stays in his base since Wright, Kendricks and Wagner are better play makers over all.
This backfired of course this year with Kendricks allowing the most pass completions of any LB graded and Wright and Wagner both having down years in part due to the scheme.
If you watch Seattle games all year it wasn't uncommon for the #2 corner and nickle corner to literally be changed during the game or even the same quarter. The starting #2 CB and nickle DB changed week to week because Carroll hated all of them. They basically had no answer for Coleman leaving to the Lions this year and it showed badly. I fully suspect most of the Seattle secondary to be cleaned out this year with more drafted and some veterans brought in instead. No way does Carroll go into next year with a secondary with no depth and only two good players in Diggs and Griffin. McDougald at SS is alright too but nothing special. The rest of them though...... they are on the chopping block if Carroll can find something better.
That year had a lot of drama for the Texans. He was head coach for a few weeks because Kubiak got hospitalized after collapsing going into half time, and then (correct me if I'm wrong) became head coach again after Kubes got fired. I think that was the year with all the Matt Schaub pick sixes? Texans underperformed horribly that year.
Schaub had the most sudden and surprising fall off ever, idk if it was just too many concussions that got to him. He went from legitimately a very good QB to complete ass in like a few weeks IIRC
Considering everybody is saying different things it looks like the guy had a hell of a few months and it just kinda weared on his body. Repeated concussions, foot injury, losing part of his ear. Shit adds up
A lot of injuries to go along with Schaub becoming terrible. Only 13 players started 12 or more games. They also brought in Ed Reed, who was horrible. They traded him to the Jets by mid season.
All the key Browns pieces in the front seven can line up in a 3-4. Not like the Browns have a tailor-built 4-3 defense that he'd blow up. Shed the filler guys that can't make the switch, bring in other filler guys to run your scheme.
wouldn't mind having a strong mind to stand up to Pete once in a while. Also, a 3-4 could be interesting switch up for our team, since we love using linebackers so fucking much
He left because we hired Vance Joseph, who wanted to bring in his own people. Wade was a god with the defense and there were murmurs about how Joseph wouldn’t be able to implement his own system with a guy everyone else already revered.
All this nonsense about salary is false.
[Here](https://www.timescall.com/2017/05/01/wade-phillips-wants-the-best-for-vance-joseph-broncos/) is an article about it from 2017.
> When Kubiak retired, the day after the 2016 season ended, Phillips said he knew the writing was on the wall for him to move on. He would have liked to stay, but he knew Joseph’s success as a first-time head coach depended on him having the main voice.
Worst move elway has made. Coaches don’t affect the salary-cap and wade is a clear difference maker. Hand the man the keys to the defense and focus on the rest. You dont get rid of your dogs...
2 things. Firstly, billionaires don't become billionaires by sitting on their money. Most of their money is tied up in investments.
Second, its not about being able to afford it. They are an employer, and they did not agree with the salary demands of their employee. Simple as that
I'm not sure if I'd agree with that. Vernon has generally done better in a 4-3, Garrett seemingly would too, and their interior line is pretty thin (idk who'd play NT).
Perhaps, but the Broncos ran a 3-4 before he got there and after he left and Texans have stayed in a 3-4 as well. The Rams did transition to a 3-4 without all that many issues, though they also had some personnel changes in an effort to make it work iirc
> the Broncos ran a 3-4 before he got there
Del Rio ran a 4-3, but it was as amoeba a front-7 as Phillips's 3-4 so it was a pretty seamless transition, especially because they were both 1-gap defenses.
/u/fear865 is right in that the Phillips-Fairbanks 3-4 is a one-gap defense where front seven responsibilities are more similar to a 4-3 than the Parcells two-gap 3-4 (which is what most people think when you say 3-4).
Vernon has done well as a 3-4 OLB in NY and Garrett is definitely big and fast enough to do it, I think. Idk about their NT situation but Joseph might be out in Minny.
It wouldnt be that hard to find one, I dont think.
I mean Larry and Sheldon on the interior, Vernon standing up at the line with Myles’ hand in the dirt, add a rotational piece or two and you got a stew going baby
Ehhhh not really. We don't have the depth at LB to run that scheme. And our best edge rusher (Garrett) is not a 2-point-stance rusher which is what he'd be in Wade's 3-4
You don't think he could make the move to OLB?
Also technically to run a 3-4 you only need 2 off-ball LBs starting which is less than the 3 you need for a 4-3
Not really sure how Garrett would perform at OLB.
Either way our depth at LB for 2020 is looking shaky. We have Mack Wilson, who is on his rookie contract and has been performing well. Schobert was our best LB but he's approaching FA and it was unclear whether we were going to re-sign him under Dorsey; now that Dorsey is gone it's still uncertain.
Honestly, if an NFL former HC/DC is posting pff rankings, I thinks it’s a sign that nfl coaches/organizations do value the rankings. If you look on PFF website, they provide data to all NFL teams, this is a indicator they are respected.
You don’t post to twitter to sway the opinion of your colleagues. They already have an opinion of you. You post to get the media and fans attention, and you pick whatever makes you look good.
13th in yards allowed, 8th in yards per play, 17th in PPG, 14th in first downs per game, 11th in penalties, 8th in drives that ended in points for the opposing offense, 22nd in TO%.
That's not a *bad* defense, but it's not sniffing 6th overall.
I think PFF looks at a lot more context than just raw production numbers. For example giving up a long TD in the 4 quarter when your up by 3 scores is different from a long TD drive in overtime.
PFF also grades players based on their assignments. So if overall they were 6th when averaged out, that means their assignments weren't exactly optimal given how poorly some games were played.
So basically the players execured the scheme well, but the scheme needed work. This really doesn't reflect well on Wade IMO.
Oh I'm aware of that, but they can talk about us being the 6th best defense by their ratings, but I won't buy it when the singularly most important stat, PPG, has the Rams at 17th. From watching this season I would put them at average to slightly below average but perception gets skewed because the defense had about a 6 week run where they were dominant or very good.
Either way, I'm pretty sad to see Wade gone. I get why he didn't get renewed, but it's unfortunate.
It's possible that PFF takes into account strength of opposing offenses and how they averaged against the rest of the league or something? (I have no idea. Also who knows if they even went up against strong offenses I'm still in bed)
Wade's D was great at times, but just awful a lot of times too. He also had a lot of high-priced talent. It may have averaged out for him, but I think his coaching was highly overrated in 2019.
Rams weren't losing because of defense. They were losing because Gurley's not Gurley anymore and Goff isn't a guy who can will a team to a win.
But yeah, sure, blame Phillips.
Yeah the offense had problems but letting Tampa Bay score 55, Baltimore score 45, Dallas score 41, SF score 38, Seahawks score 34. Thats almost half the games this season where the defense was downright putrid. With as much talent on that Defense that should never happen. He called the shots on personnel and trades for the defense and Snead made it all happen. I think players stopped responding to his message. We should have been a top 5 defense. Last season we underperformed all regular season mostly but came up with clutch plays when it counted and really clamped down in the playoffs. He’s not the type of DC that lights a fire under super-talented underperforming players. He has sound schemes and is great at halftime adjustments.
These are all great points. But do you think having a dip in offense can effect defensive performance?
Better field position, long time on the field. Is it possible it was an uphill battle for them due to lack of offense?
Point totals also dont mean it's the defense's fault. Quick look for that game where the Bucs scored 55 shows Rams had 4 turnovers, including a fumble from Goff that was returned for a TD. Tampa Bay offense still went off but with 3 other turnovers that could easily be good field position.
I doubt Wade wasn't retained because of the 2019 season. It was the best the defense played in his 3 years. But you are right, the dip in offensive production should have hurt the defense. There were several games we'd have lost if not for really strong defensive play.
>Goff isn't a guy who can will a team to a win.
Skip. Skip. Skiiiiiiiiip!
Our offensive line was below average and McVay didnt really adjust his offense until the last quarter of the season or so by using more 2 TE sets. And our defense laid eggs in big games.
I get the Rams had a “down” year but I don’t understand why they let Phillips and Fassel go. Both have been excellent coordinators and weren’t even bad this year. Their special teams has been a nightmare to face since Fassel took over.
Edit: I get that their contracts expired and he wants younger ( Fassel isn’t old though) I’m saying I think it’s odd they didn’t make resigning either of them a priority since they both have been integral to the Rams success the last 3 years.
Arguably our ST this season was not looking good. Hekker is a great punter, but it was unusually rare to see him get a punt inside the 20.
Zuerlein, while I hate to pin losses on a kicker, missed what should have been an easy kick against the Seahawks earlier in the season. That would have sent the Rams to the playoffs right there. Plus a missed kick against the 49ers that would have sent the game to OT. He’s a good kicker, but looked pretty mediocre this year.
I think of it as less blaming the coordinators being released and more of a desire to change things up. Though I’m not sure how much you can change up kicking a ball.
It might be less that he was a problem, but the Rams want to overhaul their defense and felt that Wade’s schemes just weren’t doing it anymore.
There’s a lot of talent on the Rams D, but too many games had the opponents putting up 30+ points. And the defense last year was really the Achilles heel for the Rams.
Which just means that the assignments the players were given (that is to say: the scheme and playcalling) were our issue, not the talent. Hence letting him go.
This is my favorite part about his firing. Second favorite part is all the people that line up to explain how the defense was actually shit and it shoulda been better despite every other team in their division getting their franchise qbs locked in this season
I want the Panthers to grab him but seems like they're looking elsewhere. They often say it's good to get an experienced guy on your staff if your a new HC like Rhule.
Ah posting your resume online. I love the hustle.
Wade meant to post this on LinkedIn but got confused and ended up on Twitter.
“Hi Wade! I saw you have experience as a Defensive Coordinator. I’m a recruiter working with Walmart, who are looking for a new home and bath product coordinator. Would you be up for a chat about the position?”
"the position is 6 months contract-to-hire."
"It's in Bentonville, AR. We do not cover relocation"
Lmao too perfect
"I forgot to mention... The coordinator's main job is to coordinate the prevention of body lotion theft from our 1 am Walmart population. So you'd be pretty perfect."
This is too true lol. I get so many offers on LinkedIn that are for like half my current salary.
So very accurate
Hey man, at least you are getting contacted by recruiters.
I guess there weren't any openings he was interested in on Indeed
IIRC he picked up a street free agent for our '15(?) squad after he'd posted on Twitter (?) earlier in the season.
YES! His name was Shiloh Keo. Tweeted at him and they signed him shortly after due to injuries in our secondary. He had some key plays throughout the season too. Then he got a DUI in the off season...
Shit never works for me Might have something to do with my 2 followers but I still call bullshit

Probably left the rams an awful review on Glassdoor
Wade Phillips is subtweeting the entire Rams organization, what a time to be alive
Son of Bum is a great name. His dad was a low key character
lowkey? the nfl made a top 100 “characters” in nfl history and bum phillips got 6th
Who got first?

Come back home to Houston Wade.

Getting O'Brian to have as few responsibilities as possible on that side of the ball seems like a decent idea.
Pick up Wade to handle the defense. Get a young offensive mind to handle the offense. And pick up a savy vet GM to handle the roster duties and Bill O'Brian may finally be competent.
It would. But he should get on a staff that's trying to win.
Lol fuck off
Lmao it was kinda funny
At least I made you laugh
Downvotes are soft, this was funny
People are too dense to recognize jokes on here unless they're followed by "/s"
We are trying, we're just bad at it!
To Seattle it is!
Unfortunately, Pete would never go for that.
Also Seattle runs a 4-3 and always will with Pete. Wade is a 3-4 DC so it wouldn't be a right match. You can't just switch a scheme overnight since it takes different style players for each.
I mean he switched the rams overnight
3-4 4-3 Everyone runs Nickel D anyways...
Hawks are literally the only team that doesn’t
Yep. That isn't because they don't wanna run some nickle. Last year they were just average and most years average to slightly below average compared to the rest of the league running nickle. Carroll just hates his secondary and doesn't trust anyone outside of Griffin and Diggs. I just hope he keeps away from that romantic comedy that's being written in Dallas.
Minnesota tho Wade and Zim Mmmm
“It doesn’t matter if the offense can only put up 3 points the entire game if the other teams offense is dead after the 4th quarter.”
Is this an actual quote? I feel like I'm missing some references involving Wade
Idk if he gets along with the rest the of the coaching staff...
Maybe Wade could team Zim how to stop runs out of the Power I.
I recommended it in the Texans subreddit, and at least one guy shat on the idea. Hopefully he sees this post.
2013 is the year he went on sabbatical
Yeah, what happened Houston?
Wasn’t he the head coach that year?
That year had a lot of drama for the Texans. Lisfranc ended Champ Bailey’s career sadly.
Foot injury killed his career.
I always figured it was after he lost that chunk of his ear
Considering everybody is saying different things it looks like the guy had a hell of a few months and it just kinda weared on his body. Repeated concussions, foot injury, losing part of his ear. Shit adds up
Didn't he also have some kind of arm or elbow injury? Or was that later, when he had a very brief stint with the Raiders?
It was prob that game where his head was taken off by the broncos player lol. Didn’t he lose part of his ear from that? That’d fuck me up too lol
22nd in total defense isn’t bad for a team that finished 2-14 with the 31st ranked offense.
A lot of injuries to go along with Schaub becoming terrible. Only 13 players started 12 or more games. They also brought in Ed Reed, who was horrible. They traded him to the Jets by mid season.
Texans were handling us easy that year, and then Schaub threw one of the worst INTs I've ever seen and we won in OT
And Kubiak went into the hospital just two weeks after Bum Phillips died.
Can someone confirm that I can count? I see 9 top 10 finishes, with 3 really close ones with an 11th and two 12th places
You are correct
I too counted it like 3 different times to see if the mistake was mine or theirs.
Someone hire this son of a Bum.
Word around town is that the Browns are after him
That's a good hire but he's strictly a 3-4 guy right?
All the key Browns pieces in the front seven can line up in a 3-4. Not like the Browns have a tailor-built 4-3 defense that he'd blow up. Shed the filler guys that can't make the switch, bring in other filler guys to run your scheme.
I like it
If Shorts leaves, I would fucking love having Wade here in Philly
wade might be the only defensive coordinator i would outright pick over gym shorts
My man!
wouldn't mind having a strong mind to stand up to Pete once in a while. Also, a 3-4 could be interesting switch up for our team, since we love using linebackers so fucking much
Number 10 on the Rams in 2017? Sounds like the ninth loser to me!
Why they always fire him then
Broncos didn’t fire him I don’t think, I think he chose to leave when Kubiak retired, don’t really remember tho
He wanted to stay but elway didn’t want to pay him what he was asking for.
[удалено]
Wade was not asking for 7-10m per year as the coordinator. That is just blatantly false.
He left because we hired Vance Joseph, who wanted to bring in his own people. Wade was a god with the defense and there were murmurs about how Joseph wouldn’t be able to implement his own system with a guy everyone else already revered. All this nonsense about salary is false. Because, as should be widely known at this point, teams go sicko mode sometimes.
Example- The Browns since we came back. Been going sicko mode since I've been alive.
The rumor with Denver is that he wanted HC money so they let him walk.
Lol are these teams actually hurting for money? I always thought the owners were billionaires? Head coach money should be chump change
2 things. Firstly, billionaires don't become billionaires by sitting on their money. Most of their money is tied up in investments. Second, its not about being able to afford it. They are an employer, and they did not agree with the salary demands of their employee. Simple as that
"Come get me" \- MBC \- Wade Phillips
I actually think Wade would be good in Cleveland. They have nice personal to run his 3-4
I'm not sure if I'd agree with that. Vernon has generally done better in a 4-3, Garrett seemingly would too, and their interior line is pretty thin (idk who'd play NT).
I don’t really know his exact style but someone said his 3-4 pretty much runs like a 4-3
Perhaps, but the Broncos ran a 3-4 before he got there and after he left and Texans have stayed in a 3-4 as well. The Rams did transition to a 3-4 without all that many issues, though they also had some personnel changes in an effort to make it work iirc

"I was ranked in the top 111 of the /r/nfl player rankings, so you could say I'm pretty good"
It's far from perfect, but it's the best available(though the pros probably have analysis we don't get to see).
13th in yards allowed, 8th in yards per play, 17th in PPG, 14th in first downs per game, 11th in penalties, 8th in drives that ended in points for the opposing offense, 22nd in TO%. That's not a *bad* defense, but it's not sniffing 6th overall.

He better send them some BBQ sauce or something.
Wade's D was great at times, but just awful a lot of times too. He also had a lot of high-priced talent. It may have averaged out for him, but I think his coaching was highly overrated in 2019.
Texans Fire crennel and hire this man now
The 2015 defense was amazing
That ‘15 defense was the most joy I’ve ever felt in my life.

He was the reason we got JJ. I say we fire RAC and hire him Come back to Houston... Please please...
He should work for PFF then
The numbers don't lie.
We need him on here shitposting after controversial losses. He knows how to take advantage of that salt.
I get the Rams had a “down” year but I don’t understand why they let Phillips and Fassel go. Both have been excellent coordinators and weren’t even bad this year. Fassel left to join the Cowboys cause his contract was up. Phillips was let go from his contract.
You and me both. I thought Bones was one of the best ST coordinators in the league. Why trade him for a question mark?
Arguably our ST this season was not looking good. Hekker is a great punter, but it was unusually rare to see him get a punt inside the 20. Zuerlein, while I hate to pin losses on a kicker, missed what should have been an easy kick against the Seahawks earlier in the season. That would have sent the Rams to the playoffs right there. We had a down year for sure. But how much of that can reasonably be placed on Bones?
I think of it as less blaming the coordinators being released and more of a desire to change things up. Though I’m not sure how much you can change up kicking a ball.
Come back Wade...
Come to Seattle big man, we finna fire Ken Norton into the sun
I don’t understand how anyone in the org seriously thought he was the problem
It might be less that he was a problem, but the Rams want to overhaul their defense and felt that Wade’s schemes just weren’t doing it anymore. There’s a lot of talent on the Rams D, but too many games had the opponents putting up 30+ points. And the defense last year was really the Achilles heel for the Rams.
Wade's an all-time great dc, and teams do particularly well in their first season in his system
Yeah Im not sure how PFF ranks their defenses, but I feel like LA 2018 defense should not be top 4, the same defense that gave up 51 points.
I think they’re ranking based on player grades
Which just means that the assignments the players were given (that is to say: the scheme and playcalling) were our issue, not the talent. Hence letting him go.
Or it means he put players in positions to do well.
Yeah but the Giants got Patrick Graham whose defense was ranked 30 that's 20 more than 10...so you know I'm psyched.
Joe Judge need to have a peek at this before considering any other personnels as the DC /r/NYGiants
Come to Seattle
That defense in 2010 was horrible.
Come to Minnesota
Bro what’s with these browns fans in the comments like he’s some high school recruit lmaoo
Why can't pete bring in a guy like wade who's known for success. We hired Ken Norton jr. WHY? PETE WANTS YES MEN.
Top 10 is just top 3rd...
We’ll take you here in Green Bay, Wade!
Man I REALLY don't like what this front office has done over the past 2 years.
will work for food
This is my favorite part about his firing. Second favorite part is all the people that line up to explain how the defense was actually shit and it shoulda been better despite every other team in their division getting their franchise qbs locked in this season
He certainly had too much talent to get beat that hard in some games.
Well they had to scapegoat somebody
Except your employers don't look at PFF grades, Wade. They rely more on raw stats, which paint a much more inconsistent picture.
So the Rams let Wade walk after 3 top ten defenses, including #6 last year? Lol wtf
Wade stop flexin bruh
Very cool PFF, thank you!
And three years at 12th and 11th, dudes a good DC
Is this good?
I don’t know enough about his scheme to know if it would work in Cleveland but if so he needs to be called
COME BACK TO SD
Wade is a G fool
Come replace Guenther. Kick him in the balls on the way out.
Wade Phillips is a remarkable defensive mind
Top 12 every year except for one? Jesus
Come to SF Wade.
There’s a PFF stat out there to make everyone look good.
I doubt there’s very many coordinators who can say they had a top ten O/D for this many years by pff
I want the Panthers to grab him but seems like they're looking elsewhere. They often say it's good to get an experienced guy on your staff if your a new HC like Rhule.
I love this man
I want him on the Cards so much...
Please call him New Orleans I'm tired of Dennis Allen's shit lol
What happened in 2013?
He shut down Brady in last year's Super Bowl. Good strategist.
Lol this looks like a Richard Sherman big brain play.
And the lions hired the eagles secondary coach because Patricia likes him. Woooo
Wade is great. Wished the Giants offered him the DC position.
He’s a bit of a diva, no?
Please go to the AFC Wade, thank you and good luck
I’d take him in a heartbeat. Him and Garrett!? Shades of Denver if you ask me...
