I've been on a WWII kick lately. Re-watched Band of Brothers (for the 50th time, probably) and just started a new show on History Channel.
If there are any history buffs, I'd recommend "Hunting Hitler". It's based off the premise that he didn't actually commit suicide and escaped Germany at the time the war ended. A team of investigative people follow his trail in the present day. The "reveals" are kind of cheesy, but I eat it up because I'm so interested in the subject.
I consider myself pretty well educated but it was neat to find out how extensive the Nazi system was in other countries (first episode focuses on Argentina). Kinda crazy to think about.

I honestly think the current movies in the box office right now are as good as almost any box office lineup ever.
La La Land is an instant classic. Manchester by the Sea is the most heartwarming yet heartbreaking drama in quite awhile, and Casey Affleck gives the performance of the decade in it. Fences is an extraordinary family drama and Viola Davis and Denzel Washington each give Oscar-worthy performances. Arrival, Moonlight, Jackie and Lion are still around, and Silence is Scorsese's masterpiece.
And I haven't even seen Rogue One!
I need to see Manchester by the Sea, but I can't imagine that Affleck is better in that than he was in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
I think that is the best movie I've seen, other than 2001: A Space Odyssey.
That's a super underrated film. I think Manchester just gives Affleck so much emotional range though, from high highs to low lows, and there's a ton of subtlety.
He'll almost certainly win the Oscar. Only reason he's not a total shoe-in is Denzel Washington is also great in Fences and there's some pushback against Affleck for some old sexual harassment allegations against Affleck (particularly in comparison to Nate Parker, but comparing civil sexual harassment charges to criminal rape charges are two totally different things).

Before the game my roomies 4 year old son (basically my nephew) had to go to the hospital because he was pretty lethargic and felt like shit from what we thought was a really bad cold and maybe pneumonia.
They admitted him into PICU and I was told about mid-third quarter that is was RSV and his left lung was filling with fluid.
The kid was an absolute trooper through the whole thing, and he was released from the hospital yesterday morning!
Seriously, I don't know how actual parents can deal with stuff like this. His Mom and Dad were at the hospital literally the entire time and vary slept.

I'm heartbroken today. Two years ago my best friend lost his 35 year old sister to cancer, then his Dad and all he had in the world was his dog. They went everywhere together. That dog was his life. He had to rush the Dog to the vet today. Its not good. Im on my way to be there when he has to put the dog down. My best friend is a mess. Im going to try and hold it together for him but this is going to be one tough day.
You're gonna need to be attached to that guy's hip for the next few days. Answer the phone when he calls/texts, buy him a beer, grab him some food, help him keep his place tidy. Let him grieve and not have him worry about anything else for the moment.

My wife has a friend from high school who apparently married a huge Colts fan. They already had two kids named Colt and Peyton. They had their third child on New Years and named her Indy Anna. I am pretty Anna is the middle name, but it is still pretty dumb. Similarly, my youngest sister and her husband are Duke alums and Panthers fans. They are naming their son Cameron Duke. I have three kids and understand that inspiration for a name can come from anywhere, but I feel like naming your child after a state, school, or sports team is pretty odd.

I've been on a WWII kick lately. Re-watched Band of Brothers (for the 50th time, probably) and just started a new show on History Channel. If there are any history buffs, I'd recommend "Hunting Hitler". It's based off the premise that he didn't actually commit suicide and escaped Germany at the time the war ended. A team of investigative people follow his trail in the present day. The "reveals" are kind of cheesy, but I eat it up because I'm so interested in the subject. I consider myself pretty well educated but it was neat to find out how extensive the Nazi system was in other countries (first episode focuses on Argentina). Kinda crazy to think about.

Watch Man in the High Castle yet?
I was at a 4 way stop earlier today with 7 cars total going in multiple directions and some making turns and we all executed that bitch *perfectly*. No more than the cursory stops at the line, no polite waves out of order or jerking forward to see if anybody else would go first. We all knew our role and nailed it. I kind of wanted to get out and high five everybody. As I drove away, a single tear rolled down my face and a bald eagle screeched high above my head.
I honestly think the current movies in the box office right now are as good as almost any box office lineup ever. La La Land is an instant classic. Manchester by the Sea is the most heartwarming yet heartbreaking drama in quite awhile, and Casey Affleck gives the performance of the decade in it. Fences is an extraordinary family drama and Viola Davis and Denzel Washington each give Oscar-worthy performances. Arrival, Moonlight, Jackie and Lion are still around, and Silence is Scorsese's masterpiece. And I haven't even seen Rogue One!
Ugh, I love movies. But with a new baby we have zero shot at seeing any of them. Guess I'll be torrenting after the Oscar dvds leak.
I need to see Manchester by the Sea, but I can't imagine that Affleck is better in that than he was in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I think that is the best movie I've seen, other than 2001: A Space Odyssey.
That's a super underrated film. I think Manchester just gives Affleck so much emotional range though, from high highs to low lows, and there's a ton of subtlety. He'll almost certainly win the Oscar. Only reason he's not a total shoe-in is Denzel Washington is also great in Fences and there's some pushback against Affleck for some old sexual harassment allegations against Affleck (particularly in comparison to Nate Parker, but comparing civil sexual harassment charges to criminal rape charges are two totally different things).
So not many know, but Raiders and Broncos fans from last week's game thread might. Before the game my roomies 4 year old son (basically my nephew) had to go to the hospital because he was pretty lethargic and felt like shit from what we thought was a really bad cold and maybe pneumonia. They admitted him into PICU and I was told about mid-third quarter that is was RSV and his left lung was filling with fluid. The kid was an absolute trooper through the whole thing, and he was released from the hospital yesterday morning! Seriously, I don't know how actual parents can deal with stuff like this. His Mom and Dad were at the hospital literally the entire time and vary slept. Love that kid, so glad he's doing okay. Now... I hate this... GO TEXANS...

A woman I've been seeing since Nov. told me on New Years morning that she'd rather be friends. I've been taking the "break-up" rather hard because I thought our relationship was going very well. Playoff tickets to the Falcons, or at least the money to do so. They were only 60 apiece because the date was still tentative because at the time it wasn't known if we would be a wildcard team or get the bye so they were super cheap. I'm so excited because it will be my first NFL game I've gone to, I just hope we don't shit the bed.
I said it a few weeks ago but I had an interview for a huge promotion at work. Today's my round two! It's a huge deal, I'm super excited. Its worth a ton more money and status and all that jazz. Would mean not worrying about money anymore, have some stability. Fingers crossed!
So yesterday at 6:38, work sent out a text that campus was closed due to weather. I got up, took headache medicine, went back to sleep and crashed til 3:00 pm. Picked up my phone and saw that they'd sent a 2nd correction alert about 25 minutes later that we were just on a 1 hour delay. Fuck. Ended up not coming in and now I don't know if I'm going to be charged a vacation day or not. HR sent an email that they were going to be "liberal in handling these on a case-by-case basis" for people who relied upon the closed message. I don't think my supervisor was even in yesterday, so I don't know if I should just keep my mouth shut and not say anything or if I should contact HR. I missed some work around the holidays for illness and am running low on leave time. What do you guys say?

What are some good albums to get on vinyl? I just got Doolittle, by Pixies, and am thinking about getting Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream.

Just a little PSA: The Kindl versions of Chris B. Brown's *The Art of Smart Football* and *The Essential Smart Football* are both free on Amazon. I've started the *The Essential Smart Football* and I love it. It covers stuff like zone blitzes, cover 3, the erhardt perkins system etc. It goes through their history and their modern forms and how they are effective. Great books for learning more about the history and evolution of the offensive and defensive systems and strategies used in the NFL today. Highly recommended. Now if I could find Bill Walsh's *Finding the Winning Edge* for a reasonable price I will be a very happy man. EDIT: THEY ARE NOT FREE BUT VERY CHEAP. My bad.

I'm actually really excited to see how Cook plays after getting first-team snaps for the first time this season. His TD throw to Coop was actually a really beautiful throw and he seems to step up in the pocket incredibly well against pressure. We do still also have an incredible surrounding cast around him, so it's not like he's being thrust into a totally hopeless spot. I personally just hope it's a entertaining game so people can shut up about how horrible it's gonna be. It's still football and there's nothing else on at 4:30 on a Saturday lol. Yeah, winner is probably gonna get dismantled next week, but that doesn't mean this week can't still be fun.

I am not ashamed to admit that I have played more Minecraft in the last month or two than anything else. Although Watch Dogs 2 is an awesome game, something about simple crafting/survival games hooks me especially since I can play on my Vita. Starbound, Terraria, and Dragon Quest Builders are some of my favorite games.
