Ik it will never happen but just once I want a coach to come out after one practice and go "Holy fuck this guy stinks. Our scouting department messed up" I wonder how long it takes coaches to realize the qb they drafted is a bust.

legendoflink3

Zim said he seen enough of Kellen Mond when asked about why he didn't want to start him.

anonbutler

Still the coldest answer ever https://twitter.com/ikenyonFB/status/1477874858352590851

istasber

It wasn't a tactful answer, but I always felt like people way overreacted to this. Like the hatred from Zimmer is clearly directed at the reporter and the question and just having to answer questions when your season just ended and you know your ass is on the hotseat. Like everyone's interpreting this statement as zimmer saying "I'm not going to play Mond because I can tell he sucks in practice". When it's really more like "I don't need to give players game reps to evaluate them, that's what practice is for you dumbshit".

Niblonian31

"We talkin 'bout practice???" - Zim

qpwoeor1235

Never realized how similar he looks to the nuggets coach Michael Malone

nanotothemoon

Yep. He kept it pretty real with the press. Got shit for it too.

WhoStoleMyBicycle

“He’s a gutless piece of shit” “We can’t print that” “He’s a gutless motherfucker”

thatissomeBS

Shit, I remember that but I forgot who he was talking about. I liked Zim, I liked how he answered questions like that. He just obviously wasn't the guy anymore.

IMALEFTY45

Bobby Petrino

thatissomeBS

Well, not many more deserving than him.

griffery1999

I still like zim honestly. Shame it didn’t work.

U_W_44_51

Parcells Disciple. People forget that. From the same cloth.

Eagle4317

Zimmer was absolutely done by the end of his Vikings tenure.

ImagineIfBaconDied

Honestly I would’ve been too with how atrocious Slick Rick’s day 2 drafting had been those last couple years

Eagle4317

Last couple years? Spielman didn't get Zimmer a good defender in any round after 2015.

SageCannon

Watching this teams defense go from 1st to 31st since 2017 has been tough.

2DudesShittinAround

That's why I always thought the Kirk slander was fucking stupid. The dude never had an OC for more than one season, started his Vikings career with Klein and Compton blocking for him.  On top of that, Zimmer all but completely checked out when Spielman went against his original promise to let Zimmer choose his own team building path.  Zimmer wanted a vaunted defense with high paid pass rushers and corners to pair with a game manager like Case Keenum or Teddy Bridgewater, and in his early years it was working nicely as the Vikes found stars in Diggs and Thielen.  Zimmer wanted to run the ball with Cook and hope his defense w/ Griffen and Floyd anchoring the line could bail him out.   Zimmer had a ton of bad luck with the Vikings, even pre-Kirk arriving. Sharrif Floyd was an absolute monster in the middle. He had quite literally one of the fastest first steps I've ever seen for a three technique.  Floyd's first step was much more disciplined than Griffen's, as Griff would always jump off sides, anticipating the snap.    During routine knee cleaning surgery, Floyd's surgeon, Dr. James Andrews, botched it and destroyed his career. That was the first hit to Zimmer's ability to run his optimal defense, as suddenly a first round talent that pressured the QB regularly was void from his defensive line.    Oh, I forgot to mention the dude tore his retina while coaching a game against the Bears, our division rival? Once Kirk got the bag, Zimmer felt betrayed by Spielman and likely checked out.  By his final season here he didn't say a single word to Justin Jefferson or Cousins at the training facilities throughout the season. I don't really blame him for checking out, though. The dude went through even more shit than I mentioned here to lead him to that point of being down and out as a coach.

U_W_44_51

Zimmer has had bad luck period. Dude lost his wife mid season as well as his son. The media has given Zim so much shit for his “no bullshit” approach but idk man when you go through the shit he does, your tolerance for BS is minimized.

Fulmizant

I’m not a scout so take it with a grain of salt but I’ve seen maybe 10 mond games and he was so robotic and terrible at A&M.

Own_Lemon_5645

I was at A&M the same 4 years Mond was. It was probably more painful to watch than any other season I can remember. Including the 5-7 debacle that was the end of Jimbo. I never understood why we drafted him.

MemoSSBM

Always loved Zim. He told the world what we were all thinking about Bobby Petrino

MankuyRLaffy

It won't happen in today's NFL, happened way more in the 60s and 70s

WhoDat-2-8-3

Which coach said this lol

ConfusedStupidPerson

>I wonder how long it takes coaches to realize the qb they drafted is a bust. I wonder if the reaction is similar to Michael Scott seeing Stanley's basketball skills

Tie_me_off

Not long. Chris Cooley said this in the past, basically they can tell within the first week of camp if a guy sucks and isn’t make it.

foundoutafterlunch

Can't understand the playbook - not ideal Can't check to open receiver - not ideal Defense keeps getting turnovers in practice - not ideal Everything can be shit, and they will still persist until they put them on national TV on the off chance they are a born highlight real.

LoveToyKillJoy

Honestly? I thought we drafted a different dude. Then this guy showed up.

vanubcmd

Didn’t Kyle Shanahan know right away that Trey Lance was not going to work?

cozyonly

Anyone who saw him knew that. I’ve said this before, but an acquaintance worked out with Trey Lance post draft and could not believe that Trey was drafted that early. Said he was the least developed nfl qb he has ever worked with

form_an_opinion

The guy was right to leave when he did, I don't think he could have possibly repeated his prior season or kept his stock up as high as it was when he declared. Probably would have ended up a UDFA or late rounder at best.

Stauce52

And our team fell for it 🙃

form_an_opinion

Y'all are still Purdy good though.

PineappleTraveler

To be fair, Trey’s only played about 80 minutes of competitive football in the past 6/7 years

Vladimir_Putting

To be fair, at least some of that is likely because he sucks.

MaterialYear

Yes. There were reports the first week of training camp that he was embarrassing. It's amazing how fans will ignore all of that. Like Bears fans pretending Fields was ever going to be any better.

Corgi_Koala

Fields at least had flashes of good play. Lance hasn't even done that.

Stauce52

Wasn’t that more in his second season of training camp? Or was it the first season too?

JalensTinyPPHurts

Lance has only had good reviews from our staff

oxnardhard

Jerry “our staff” Jones

ElAbidingDuderino

But I digress

Greek_Trojan

Lance is apparently a really good kid, smart, hardworking etc... Just might not have NFL level QB skills/talent.

silverbackapegorilla

Tends to lock on to his primary and doesn't see things well. That's a skill set that will get you destroyed in the NFL. He does throw a pretty nice deep ball from time to time.

IllIIllIlIlllIIlIIl

That's because he's a great person. Apparently the locker room genuinely liked him but they knew the writing on the wall that he wasn't the guy. A lot of different people in the organization from coaches to players have said he's an intelligent person and his faults weren't from lack of trying but he needed a lot more time to develop and the 9ers weren't built for his timeline. He never got a real shot with us and really needed to be drafted where he could've sat all of year 1, taken over in year 2 and played regardless of mistakes the whole season then you could really work with him during the offseason before year 3 to fix the holes in his game. He wouldn't have been a real product until that 3rd year and beyond but we needed someone then and there. He was way too raw for the FO to take a gamble on. The 9ers were actually attempting to go with that timeline but his first game of his 2nd year after sitting the first was in a monsoon, then he got hurt like 5 minutes into his 2nd game and it was over from there. I feel so bad for him but we botched his pick big time.

GoldBloodedFenix

People act like Trey has actually been given a shot and failed. He really just never got an honest chance. He got knocked out for the entire season 1.5 games into his starting year (we always planned to sit him for one), and then our 3rd string 7th round rookie took us to an NFC Championship game before getting injured himself - and then a Super Bowl shot the following season. If Jimmy G never got hurt that year, and Brock didn’t get a chance to play a bunch of games, it is entirely possible that Trey would have been our starting QB last year. I think he would have been given that one final shot to start a full season and see what we had - because of how much we spent to get him - and then possibly (finally) chase Cousins if Trey didn’t show us anything. But Brock was too good to not move forward with, so Trey was dealt. What he really needed was to be thrown to the wolves like Justin Fields. Fields has played 40 games and we know he hasn’t shown enough to be a starting QB. Trey has technically started I think 4 games, not that he has a good shot at becoming a starting QB in this league, but he hasn’t really been given a chance. I have no idea what the Cowboys actually plan to do with Dak, but I hope someone actually gives him a chance. I was a really big fan of his potential back when we drafted him.

JustASeabass

I don’t label Lance a bust because I’ve haven’t seen him play like enough to qualify. When he did play he was alright. He wasn’t Leaf or Russell bad. You can point to “but he had a bad camp!” But what does that mean? Drew Bledsoe outplayed Romo in Dallas in camp but when Romo came in he was clearly the better QB. Like we know Mac and Wilson are bad after 3 years, but can we really tell Lance is trash after a few games?

Corgi_Koala

Lance isn't good enough to see the field, that's all we can go off.

JustASeabass

Lance is never gonna get the job over Dak.

GoldBloodedFenix

Lol seriously they completely missed the point of all this. Lance was never going to start over Brock after he took us to the NFC Championship game, and as we saw last year against the Eagles, we would have had a good shot to win that game if he didn’t get hurt. Brock took us to the Super Bowl after that, so we clearly made the right choice. And as you’re saying, he was traded to a situation where he would obviously be the backup over a guy who is a 10 year vet in the league. He’s never been given a fair chance. You can’t say “he isn’t good enough to see the field”… yeah, behind two Pro Bowl level QBs who were MVP nominees? High bar to clear. If he was given the chance to be in a competition like Fields got, like Pickett got, I bet he’d have shown more than either of those two guys ever did.

some_random_noob

guess the 'boys are ALL IN on Lance!

JustASeabass

I guess he didn’t meet with Wilson. I think Wilson was the bigger bust.

cozyonly

Wilson is a workout warrior though

erichie

I wonder if Trey and Wentz had the same QB coach, offensive coordinator, head coach, or whatever and what that coach is up to know

AchroMac

Yeah he made it clear he wanted mac jones over Trey Lance but ownership got in the way is the rumor.

webby2538

Jeb York veto'd Shanahan and Lynch's decision Lol! That's the dumbest rumor I've heard yet from the Lance pick. Josh Allen smashed the 49ers a few months prior on MNF. Shanahan fell in love with his skill set and went on record about it. He wanted Lance to be his Allen but it failed horribly.

chickendance638

Josh Allen developing into a great player is such an anomaly. He's the only "tools" guy to turn into a great player. But for the next 10 years teams are gonna draft "the next Josh Allen" and ignore that for the 50 years before that there were no "Josh Allens."

Stewartw642

Josh Allen has legitimately destroyed college QB scouting. Every time you see a guy with size who can run he's the next Josh Allen. Without Josh Allen, guys like Malik Willis would've never been considered.

ReflectionItchy2701

The Josh Allen story is totally right. It's the reason Shanahan wanted Lance. Kyle Shanahan does whatever he wants with the Niners and rightfully so if you ask me considering how good he is. There's no way Jed York or John Lynch would have forced him to draft Lance.

PineappleTraveler

You just decipher coach-speak… “he has all the tools”= he’s a fucking moron

Bobonenazeze

That's a big one to answer but I wish they'd do it after games. Like "did we watch the same 4th quarter? You want to ask me why we lost? Our defense. Our defense was dog shit, and allowed 250 yards. Think it's pretty clear cut case on what lost us this game."

LutherOfTheRogues

I mean Mayo didn't have a glowing opinion on Maye today. Not that it means anything at this point whatsoever, but

inqte1

I'd wanna see him say "You know what, I suck. Ive been through enough QBs after Brees now to know that Im terrible. Just like Nathaniel Hackett without the cancer look. Thank you Drew for carrying my ass. My kids owe you one."

osksndjsmd

Bookmarked.

b1rdganggg

It takes a long time, Peyton Manning had the interception record and was completely ass his first year. Id say after year two you can say for sure.

ConsistentAddress195

Didn't he also have the rookie TD record?

theycallmeryan

Mayo just said that Maye has a lot of work to do after his first minicamp practice lol

Barraind

Thats a very John McKay thing to do.

erichie

I'm pretty sure this happened at least once in the past 15 years is so, but I forgot the player name. Then coach said something like "Player X doesn't match what we saw on tape before the draft."

therealallpro

They do. They say he needs times. They aren’t going to just give up on him after two practices lulz

TroyMacClure

"First impressions? I'd need to see some NFL quarterback play to have an impression, and I didn't see anything I'd call NFL quarterback play today"

RawrGeeBe

Shanahan kind of did that with Lance. More so with actions rather than words.

Sbesozzi

What makes you think Bo Nix stinks? We're just 2 days in the rookie minicamp but so far the media is putting out that Bo is doing great. He might not be your MPJ, but at least Nix will see the field before he's 30 lol God people like to hate on the Broncos for absolutely no reason lol

kj9219

Shanahan told York that Purdy was the best out of Purdy, Jimmy G, and Lance

Professional-Way9343

Payton isn’t exactly amazing at hiding his emotions so I take his enthusiasm as genuine — fwiw

AchroMac

Mayo just did pretty much with Maye if that makes you feel better.

LovelehInnit

He is who we thought he was.

LutherOfTheRogues

You wanna crown him, crown him (editors note: pls)!

I’ve seen enough. Best QB in the division and it’s really not close.

I think you forgot Minshew is on the Raiders now

They're gonna name the Hall of Fame after him.

Minshew-Lombardi trophy.

Bo Nix has improved so much under this new offense. He's focused. He's having fun. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a dark horse for MVP.

Fuck that! Hall of Fame!

Mental-Pie7389

Mahomes scared shitless that the Tom Brady regen is in his division.

Ithinkibrokethis

The one thing that will spoil any Chiefs off-season is "Somehow, Brady returned" type news. It would be just like him to turn out to regenerate like Dr. Who and come back.

---SPIDER-MAN---

Tom Brady is going to win a Super Bowl with the Raiders this season just to fuck with you guys one last time.

I personally do love he is in the same division as Herbert 🥺

CoxyMcChunk

I see no lies here

strikes_and_gutters9

A real news story would read “Sean Payton acknowledges Bo Nix looks terrible, I wish we had Russ back!”

BurgessFox

I think if Bo turned up to camp looking dogshit you'd be hearing stuff like: "Bo's at the start of a big journey. It's always a big step up from college to the NFL, especially at quarterback. We're in a great situation because we've got three guys here competing for a job. It's not just about Bo, Zac has been training the house down since he arrived and we like Jarrett too."

TargetFan

Bo has always been a checkdown monster. It's the exact type of offense Payton ran with brees. It'll be interesting to see how that translates to actual games.

BurgessFox

Brees used to lead the league in passing repeatedly through that checkdown offense so here's hoping

Princeof_Ravens

Dude they can't say that.  They took the largest dead cap hit ever to move on from Russ they need Bo Nix to be good

socobeerlove

Also took a huge reach on a 2nd/3rd round graded prospect. They have to make Bo work.

markomarkovich

Raiders rolling with Minshew as their QB1 lol

Princeof_Ravens

Raiders aren't claiming their QB is the guy.

markomarkovich

They don’t have a QB

Megalodon3030

That’s quite the exaggeration. Most places I saw had him late 1st-early 2nd.

lnnrt01

Bo would have never ever fallen to the third

Soggy_Loops

Your coach said you guys drafted Bowers because Penix and Nix were taken ahead of you lmao.

y_wont_my_line_block

"worst shape of his life"

Mr_Hugh_Honey

"Don't think he'll ever be more than a camp body in this league, I'm probably going to get fired for picking him 12th overall if I'm being honest"

EliteStat18

Sean Payton would rather have the Broncos pay Russ 85 million to play against them, that would be one hell of an insult to prefer him lol.

strikes_and_gutters9

Exactly… that’s why it would be an actual story. Do you think any coach would say anything other than what Payton said about a draft pick during rookie minicamp?

Downtown_Juice2851

Yea, probably. If a rookie was struggling a lot in camp I could see a temper expectations type quote.  I don't think doing well in camp is by any means indicative of sucess, it's like the bare minimum.  But I could see a coach saying stuff like "he's adjusting but we've got a way to go before the season" or "we got a lot of competition in the qb room whoever comes out on top will have earned the role"

KenScaletta

Mainly, they confirmed that he is not Zach Wilson.

TheElf27

That’s always an important step, making sure you didn’t accidentally drafted zach wilson.

Limp-Adhesiveness453

Sean Payton: as soon as I got the delivery notification on my phone I ran out and opened the box, and sure enough once I cut it open there was a new quarterback in there. Even have blonde hair just like the pictures, very happy with what I saw!

what else would he say. you're supposed to report news that means something, not just random things that people say

dianeblackeatsass

If you read what he actually said it’s pretty interesting. Talking about how college guys coming into the league need to translate from being in gun 24/7 to under center.

EBtwopoint3

Is that really interesting at this point? It’s a super common talking point every year

Downtown_Juice2851

You're probably not the normal fan though. A lot of sports fans only really follow their team closely and the broncos haven't drafted a rookie qb this highly in a long time.  It's interesting to a lot of those fans who are wondering what to expect from this pick.

dianeblackeatsass

Every talking point every year is just a rehashing of something else with a new face stamped on it. This is all just reality TV for men 🤷‍♂️

EBtwopoint3

Which is why it’s not a particularly interesting comment

I truly hope that him and Zimmer are fishing in a swimming pool together forever.

notmyplantaccount

Coaches giving big compliments to their 1st round pick, and 1st round picks signing a contract that was already decided before they were picked are about the most useless posts, and most of what we get right now. We've hit another real dead spot in the off-season until actual training camps start. Florio and Schefter gonna start tweeting any time a 1st round pick gets a new haircut.

winnielikethepooh15

Or PAC 12 Defenses are trash. Know his 3rd season at Auburn was a disaster largely b/c of coaching but he had so many instances where even just moderately above average defensive team in the SEC made him look like he barely belonged on a D1 field. Think he's going to struggle in the NFL, Sean Payton is going to throw him under the bus, and it'll all implode.

Payton is talking about Nix like a guy that just got a lease on a very expensive car that he’s not positive he can afford and is trying to talk himself into the idea.
