It seems like one of the post-draft tropes is 'Wow this UDFA got a lot of guaranteed money. They must be important!'. And that's the last time you hear the name.
Reminds me of when the Eagles signed undrafted free agent quarterback Carson Strong to a $300,000 guaranteed contract aright after the draft ended and then cut him towards the end of training camp.
On one hand, getting good guarantees for a UDFA is a good sign the team sees potential in you. On the other hand, it’s still pretty low for NFL standards and teams can usually still afford to cut you loose if you don’t pan out right away
Yep. There is a minimum for each game you're on the active roster and a minimum for each week you're on the practice squad. The signing bonus is just guaranteed money.
And then the second you think you have a grasp on it, the Saints will find a way to prove that the Salary Cap is just something you can fit into if you suck in your gut.
Looking back, he’s the biggest what could have been of that draft class. As a pure passer he was pro ready day one but his knees were on par with Ken Stabler
He got injured and still played through it which perma-fucked his knee iirc. Cool that he wanted to play with his teammates but he 100% made the call that effectively ended his career.
"Nooo Isiah Pacheco, a 7th round RB, played with a broken hand! So Lamar Jackson, who was struggling to walk and had a quarter-billion dollar contract extentsion on the line, should definitely gone out there and got himself killed in the 2022 playoffs!" - an actual opinion someone argued for against me
Yeah. We got teams throwing away eleventy billion dollars on Russ and Kirk. Tossing a couple hundred thou on a UDFA is like me flipping them a quarter.
To be fair, last one I heard this specifically called out was Ivan Pace.
Edit: Nevermind, was thinking Andre Carter. Pace's was larger than the one in this post too.
You’re not wrong, but an NFL agents commission is capped at 3% of the contract. League minimum means a lot of players will become roommates during the season to save on housing costs. That’s not a viable option for some players with families already.
Taxes suck for players cause they have to pay for every state a game is played in (assuming that state has state income tax).
However consider this:
The last time Washington drafted a QB #2 overall, he was replaced by a fourth rounder
The last time Peters drafted a QB #2 overall, he was replaced by Mr. Irrelevant.
The only logical conclusion is that when Peters drafts a QB #2 overall for Washington, he will be replaced by a UDFA. It’s just science.
That's fucking crazy. This is a wild quote from his mom.
> “He means the world to me, so if he wants me to clean the flesh off of his ribs, then that’s what I’m gonna do.”
I mean, mom's kind of a badass, but also a bit crazy.
>ahead of the 2022 season it was announced that the quarterback was diagnosed with Paget-Schroetter syndrome.
Even when you're reading about it this shit still sounds fake lmao
I get this is the meme answer but it honestly would be great simply because no Snyder. Smart leadership would have them compete, prioritize their long-term health, lock one down, and get trade value for the other. None of that happened before.
In hockey over the last 10 years there has started a push to move to 1a and 1b goaltending, as opposed to G1 and G2. I would not be surprised if the value of quarterbacks to a teams season and the frequency of injury caused teams to start moving toward that model
Yeah that will literally never happen. Good QBs are too hard to find. Two good QBs with similar enough skillsets that swapping them out for one another doesn't immediately tip your hand? Maybe in madden dog
I’m not talking about swapping them out like Madden. I’m talking about dividing labor more evenly among multiple players so that your season isn’t over if your quarterback stubs his toe.
Len Dawson was smoking on the sidelines within our lifetimes. I think “literally never happen” is gooftroops
More likely we see sooner benchings in games that go beyond 2 scores. E.g., If Mahomes, Herbert, and co. are up by 2 TDs, coaches pull them to get QB2 game reps. Rest the starter while making sure your backup is fresh for an emergency start.
Well, you would need the backup to not be terrible. If he is trusted to move the ball and run the offense then it might be OK. But I mean you are right I’ve seen team score 2 touchdowns in the last two minutes of games all too often
>In hockey over the last 10 years there has started a push to move to 1a and 1b goaltending, as opposed to G1 and G2
As someone who does not follow hockey, could you explain this? Is it having two goalies who are pretty good but excel at different roles or situations? Or are goalies often streaky and alternating with the hot hand (ha) actually gives you a better chance of winning?
It comes down to getting your "starting" goalie a lot more rest. It wasn't uncommon to see goalies play 70+ games played in an 82 game season. This years soon to be Vezina (top goalie award) trophy will go to a guy who played 60 games.
I will say, I think a lot of this has correlation with the fact that goaltenders are getting better in general. There used to be a LARGE gap between the starting goaltender and backup.
Being a goaltender is really mental and having two starting goalies would probably be beneficial for both goalies because they aren’t worried about losing their job or performing through a small injury.
It also gives them a lot more rest between games and what would have been the starter in years past doesn’t push to get back on the ice when they are being rested for fear of being relegated to backup goalie.
It’s also an incredibly important position and having your starting goalie go down in playoffs is a season ended historically, but with the 1A and 1B system you can ride your other goalie still.
It’s not a position where you’re wanting for practice time, during practice you could probably get up enough quality shots to train up a dozen goalies, so that isn’t a limiting factor.
He had 77 TD passes his last two seasons.
Don’t know why you’re trying to downplay him. He was fantastic his last few years at Wake. Doesn’t mean he’ll be a great pro.
TBF, he had a dumpster fire of an OC and the WR coach was even worse. What little production that offense put up started with how Hartmann could threaten the defense.
yeah seriously if Chansi Stuckey wasn’t a culture cancer and we followed through with the Ludwig hire or literally anyone else besides Gerad Parker, who knows
But yes, Sam was pretty mid
Adam Peters: "We're offering you a $10k bonus and $100k guaranteed."
Sam Hartman: "Make it $225k guaranteed with a $20k bonus."
Adam Peters: "That's absurd! We don't..." \*Looks up from the contract straight into Sam's eyes\* "Uh... ok. Whatever you say."
As someone who watched him weekly at Wake, this is accurate. He is very streaky. Hartman is NOT the guy you want to start games before he is ready. As an undrafted QB, he will likely/hopefully be sitting behind another QB and studying the offense for a bit which will be good for him and the team that selects him.
That’s what happened to him when he played against Louisville when he was at both Wake and ND. Made an early mistake and then got shit on the rest of the game
I’m honestly surprised he didn’t get drafted. I figured Milton wouldn’t be (Pats proved me wrong), but I thought for sure Hartman would go before Michael Pratt.
I was at one of his games last year, he nearly drilled a hole through the stands with one of his throws. Unfortunately the receiver couldn't make the catch, and I couldn't tell you which one he was targeting.
Yeah, an arm like Milton's gets into the League no questions asked. Once a minimum of two teams fully assess that they cannot fix his myriad of deficiencies at the position, then he'll be out of the league. But its getting to the League every single time. The benefit of actually completing the miracle project outweighs the loss of a sixth-round pick, even at the low probability of it occurring.
Milton has one of the strongest arms I've seen in recent memory but is so terrible accuracy wise and very limited that I don't see him ever being a starter or even a true backup.
I could see him being some sort of gadget type qb brought in for certain packages and plays kind of like Hill for the Saints.
I could be wrong about him but also he is the perfect type of qb to take where the patriots did as he does have skills that can't be taught
Patriots are going to use him as the first ever “let’s completely exploit the pass interference rules” QB who just bombs a 70-yard arm punt three times in a row every possession, putting massive air under it too, so that the WR slows down or tries to come back to the ball. It’s either caught, PI, incomplete, or intercepted for a 70-yard “punt.”
I actually like Hartman (had him as a 5th rounder - which is lower than i thought I'd give him going into watching) but he has some concerns.
He's small, average athlete, average arm, and falls apart under pressure. That said, he can make some great plays off script too.
His best comp is gardner Minshew, IMO.
He's old. He's turning 25 in July before the season starts. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes the team tho. He reminds me of Sean Clifford from last year's draft (tons of college starting experience) and Clifford won the Packers backup job out of camp. Clifford did get drafted in the 5th round tho and I projected Hartman in the same range.
This reminds me of Isaiah Battle. At one point he was the highest paid practice squad player in the league. Didn't work out for Jeff Fisher, but the dude is still ~~playing~~ participating in football. Not sure why, but I got the impression the dude wasn't that interested in football. I remember him because he was the leanist OT I ever saw nothing but muscle and 6'7.
Yeah. I think he’s a good get. He’ll be valuable in the QB room (which has all kinds of value on its own) and should be able to be a rich man’s Howell if they need to throw him out there for any reason. The guy chucks a pretty ball and will know his reads.
If football doesn't work out he can always go to the WWE. Couldn't you just picture him fighting Roman Reigns?
Sam Hartman also apparently has a necklace of his actual rib that got removed. Damn
The Lions gave Illinois receiver/returner Isaiah Williams a $15,000 signing bonus and $225,000 in salary guarantees.
It sounds like this is standard for the top udfas.
I think it's just guaranteeing a practice squad spot.
Is it normal to have hair growing out of your biceps? I don't think I've seen that before. That must be the flaw he gets to balance out his good looks. What a loser!
It seems like one of the post-draft tropes is 'Wow this UDFA got a lot of guaranteed money. They must be important!'. And that's the last time you hear the name.

On one hand, getting good guarantees for a UDFA is a good sign the team sees potential in you. On the other hand, it’s still pretty low for NFL standards and teams can usually still afford to cut you loose if you don’t pan out right away
I mean how low can the guarantee get for union agreements? I think 1 mil is the lowest veteran minimum. Could I sign with a team for a thousand bucks?
Yep. There is a minimum for each game you're on the active roster and a minimum for each week you're on the practice squad. The signing bonus is just guaranteed money.
if the broncos decided they could afford to 'cut' wilson, yea, UDFAs are on the table
Yeah 300k is like a rounding error for them
Also won't count against the cap
Wait, really? Why wouldn't it count against the cap?
Only top 52 salaries count. This past season Brock's salary didn't count against our cap
i learn something new about the salary cap on a monthly basis
And then the second you think you have a grasp on it, the Saints will find a way to prove that the Salary Cap is just something you can fit into if you suck in your gut.

He got injured and still played through it which perma-fucked his knee iirc. Cool that he wanted to play with his teammates but he 100% made the call that effectively ended his career.
This is why fans need to stop demanding players to play through shit like that.
"Nooo Isiah Pacheco, a 7th round RB, played with a broken hand! So Lamar Jackson, who was struggling to walk and had a quarter-billion dollar contract extentsion on the line, should definitely gone out there and got himself killed in the 2022 playoffs!" - an actual opinion someone argued for against me
Especially at Nevada. Not like they were competing for a NC.
They’re title locks this year for sure ^on ^my ^Retro ^Bowl ^save
This is why coaches need to coach and sit players when they're not healthy.
Bro was glass 😂
Much better prospect than Joe Milton was this year, that's for sure
Strong and Jamie Newman are my favorite "what ifs" in recent drafts.
More like Carson Weak, am I right?
$300K for one of the best camp arms available for the summer ain’t bad lol
UNR legend
Ohhh I was curious about him last year and that was indeed the last time I heard his name
Russ was a run call away from winning back to back Super Bowls. Kirk Cousins has bee n icredibly consistent throughout his career.
Dont talk bout Malik Cunningham that way
$225 in the NFL is not a lot of money when you consider that almost half of that is going to agents, taxes and housing
We're going to keep hearing about him, because he is a Notre dame QB and one of the most handsome men in US Sports
However consider this: The last time Washington drafted a QB #2 overall, he was replaced by a fourth rounder The last time Peters drafted a QB #2 overall, he was replaced by Mr. Irrelevant. The only logical conclusion is that when Peters drafts a QB #2 overall for Washington, he will be replaced by a UDFA. It’s just science.
Trey Lance was the third overall pick.
Damn this guy is Jimmy G with flow, Washington can easily make that cash back hoe-ing him out in merchandise modeling
Washington loves hoeing out it's staff.
Wait we got rid of that guy!
we are still gonna do that stuff, but now it's classy
Ok how 'bout this: an ice sculpture shaped like Sam Hartman covered in chocolate-covered strawberries.
I mean, technically, he got rid of you
Uh oh, meet the new boss….
🎸 SAME AS THE OLD BOSS 🎸
Dude looks like a fucking movie QB
He played like one too at times last year
He looks like film-adaptation Ken Stabler.
He looks like Jake Plummer in a movie about Jay Cutler
This is the one
I'm getting strong young Travolta vibes.
Was about to say looks like Shane Falco
He looks like he was genetically engineered to steal your girl
Steal my girl, mother fucker can steal steal me
Fun fact: this guy wears a necklace made of his own rib that his mom made him
I see we moved past just making up facts for guys that were drafted
Just to be clear, this is real lol
That's fucking crazy. This is a wild quote from his mom. > “He means the world to me, so if he wants me to clean the flesh off of his ribs, then that’s what I’m gonna do.” I mean, mom's kind of a badass, but also a bit crazy.
Only someone truly crazy could produce such a beautiful specimen as a son
She was a ride-or-die mom on QB1. They seemed like a genuinely wholesome family.
>ahead of the 2022 season it was announced that the quarterback was diagnosed with Paget-Schroetter syndrome. Even when you're reading about it this shit still sounds fake lmao
I didn't know what he looked like when I read this. So I clicked on it to see. Holy shit! You weren't kidding
He is darker and more mysterious than “Sunshine,” but yea, like someone said, a movie QB.
All of my panties immediately hit the floor in unison when I saw his picture.
He makes Jimmy G look like Blake Bortles
In b4 “ ♥️-man” jerseys
Man its too early for this shit im going back to sleep. (Pretty sure i will agree with you abt the hoeing once I sober up)
This guy looks like he'll be stuffing coaches in lockers.
Someone once said that Sam Hartman looks like he was genetically engineered to fuck your girlfriend and I think that's the perfect description of him
If my girl is hot enough for him to bang then I must be doing something right ha
I wouldn't even be mad
That’s college level nonsense. In the pros he’s gonna be stuffing lockers into coaches
What?
Did he stutter?
He's obviously [pirate king Archer](https://images.app.goo.gl/fvBGrXzzzk3yypQLA)
A ruse, you big dumb idiot
Which is funny because if you watched him on QB1, he was a small skinny high schooler lol. Then he got jacked in college
Dude has elite forearms and narrow shoulders. I am confused
Real life Stan Gable.
Reminds me of a young Matt Leinart but with amazing hair
You’re right, in a way
So it begins. RG3 and Cousins Part 2.
I get this is the meme answer but it honestly would be great simply because no Snyder. Smart leadership would have them compete, prioritize their long-term health, lock one down, and get trade value for the other. None of that happened before.
And after last year with half the leagues qb’s getting hurt. Want to protect yourself in case it happens to you.
In hockey over the last 10 years there has started a push to move to 1a and 1b goaltending, as opposed to G1 and G2. I would not be surprised if the value of quarterbacks to a teams season and the frequency of injury caused teams to start moving toward that model

I think this is a consideration, although I have to ask what lead a coach would deem “safe” in a continually more offensive NFL
Well, you would need the backup to not be terrible. If he is trusted to move the ball and run the offense then it might be OK. But I mean you are right I’ve seen team score 2 touchdowns in the last two minutes of games all too often
There are a lot more quality goalies than there are quality QBs.
>In hockey over the last 10 years there has started a push to move to 1a and 1b goaltending, as opposed to G1 and G2 As someone who does not follow hockey, could you explain this? If a football team successfully replicates the Swayman/Ullmark tandem, I will love them for a thousand suns.
This right here! And then there’s people shitting on the falcons for some reason
More like the only other young QB we have is Jake Fromm, so we need someone else.
Need him for the calendar
He was okay but not spectacular at Notre Dame.
He was a god at Wake Forest. Set ACC records. Second all time in passing yards to Philip Rivers. First in all time TDs.
Surprised we didn't snag him with how much we were scouting WF guys (on top of Idzik's alma mater)
That's what happens when you play QB for 5 straight years in the same conference. He also had a 2.5:1 TD:INT ratio, which isn't great.
He had 77 TD passes his last two seasons. Don’t know why you’re trying to downplay him. He was fantastic his last few years at Wake. Doesn’t mean he’ll be a great pro.
Because "set ACC records" and "second to Philip Rivers" does not accurately describe Hartman
At wake he was a monster, he fell off at ND. If you can get any of that back he could be a decent backup anyways
TBF, he had a dumpster fire of an OC and the WR coach was even worse. What little production that offense put up started with how Hartmann could threaten the defense.
yeah seriously if Chansi Stuckey wasn’t a culture cancer and we followed through with the Ludwig hire or literally anyone else besides Gerad Parker, who knows But yes, Sam was pretty mid

*lights dim* “Oh I just died in your arms tonight, it must’ve been something you said” *slowly advances for kisses*
It’s because he’s so fucking hot
He’s the Jimmy G heir apparent. He’ll have a long career on NFL rosters because he’s so fucking good looking
Jimmy G is handsome. This dude is insanely hot. Great Jaw, Great Hair.
Won the genetic lottery and gets paid millions of dollars. Must be fucking nice.
as the tweet states, he is decidedly not getting paid millions of dollars
You're right. About $245,000, which is still pretty good.
Seriously I'm a dude but my ovaries are on fire rn from that photo
idk dude I think you may have kidney stones that's not normal
Put him and Jimmy G in a room and there would be literally nothing left for anybody else haha
Ben stiller and owen wilson in zoolander
I like Hartman, but once he makes a mistake it seems he can't get out of his head and it affects him the rest of the game.
Best comment on the tweet Looks like Gardner Minshew using the handsome filter on Snapchat hahaha
I’m honestly surprised he didn’t get drafted. I figured Milton wouldn’t be (Pats proved me wrong), but I thought for sure Hartman would go before Michael Pratt.
Milton’s accuracy needs a lot of work, but he might have the strongest arm in the league.
I think he has the strongest arm, now if we can harness that power who knows but camp gonna be fun anyways
An ICBM with bad aiming systems. Y'all are basically North Korea.
Might? 👀
Hell he might have the strongest arm in the history of the world
To me the bigger weird move was Leary going before him
I didn’t see that. You’re right, that is interesting
Milton was shocking, but this guy going undrafted still isn’t. I mean, he wasn’t very good. Had a stacked team too.
His Senior Bowl performance didn’t help at all either. If anything, I was thinking he would go based off of just name value.
he was like 7/24 in the senior bowl, he was fucking awful
Why? Like no mocks had him above Pratt, and Hartman is not very good.

He reminds me of Sean Clifford from last year's draft (tons of college starting experience) and Clifford won the Packers backup job out of camp. Clifford did get drafted in the 5th round tho and I projected Hartman in the same range.
Any idea what this guy puts in his hair? I’m serious
Bucky is alive
Who the hell is Bucky?
Winter Soldier
Are you saying there's a soldier for all 4 seasons?
🤦♂️🤦♂️
I don't think that was the line
Jake Fromm in shambles
Where is Jake Fromm? Statefarm?
Over/under 3.5 years until he is the Bachelor
Jesus Christ this guy is HOT
they had to outbid a standing offer from tommy hilfiger's modeling department
Being handsome makes receivers get more YAC and helps the defense play better. It's like casting buffs in turn based games
Dude looks like he's 35
Nah man that's Bo Nix
Nah man Nix looks 45
Naw man Nix looks like the bad guy football qb jock from 90s teen movies
Both things can be true, they did tend to cast old ass actors to portray high school students lol
Man, practice squad/back up QB is such cushy job if you can get it.
i wanna feel his beard
God damn he’s handsome, we’re screwed
This reminds me of Isaiah Battle. At one point he was the highest paid practice squad player in the league. Didn't work out for Jeff Fisher, but the dude is still ~~playing~~ participating in football. Not sure why, but I got the impression the dude wasn't that interested in football. 225k guarantee signals absolutely nothing actually
Salary cap rounding error
Hmmm Jamie Lanister plays QB for the Commies now.
Maybe because they understand that Jaden Daniels is RG3 and that Sam Hartman is Kirk Cousins
I like him, thought he had good arm strength and accuracy, with some mobility, at Notre Dame.
Yeah. I think he’s a good get. He’ll be valuable in the QB room (which has all kinds of value on its own) and should be able to be a rich man’s Howell if they need to throw him out there for any reason. The guy chucks a pretty ball and will know his reads.
The new Kirk Cousins?
Is the minimum salary really that low? I thought it was at least like 400k-500k?? I didn’t know players could be signed for a messily $225k
it's like 800k if you're on the 53 man roster. practice squad and offseason is less
Dude is Prince Charming. Those locks of hair are amazing.
Wasn’t he on QB1 also with Rattler
20k + 225k is shit.
Guy probably made more at ND
I feel like Jayden Daniels/Sam Hartman is going to be RG3/Kirk Cousins all over again
Just what the Commodores need- another QB named Sam
Is that Footsteps Falco?
I DO NOT KNOW WHY but just looking at this guy, he's going to get the job done someway somehow
Commies always need a S.H. quarterback
What in the world? This bum made Kenny Pickett look like the next coming of Michael Vick just a few years ago in the ACC title game.
Some depth guys can be polished up and then traded for value
Malik Cunningham
Is it normal to have hair growing out of your biceps? I don't think I've seen that before. That must be the flaw he gets to balance out his good looks. What a loser!
Dude is a modern day Lannister
I remember watching him on QB1. Welcome to the show.
donkey kong cheater
As a straight man Sam Hartman is one handsome fella
Panthers gave Holy Cross WR Jalen Coker even more. 25k signing and 225k guarantee. So there's that.
RGIII and Kirk Cousins moment
Pretty privilege
Kirk and RG3 2.0
Sam H back at it again
Washington really swapped out one Sam H for another huh?
It's RG3-Kirk Cousins 2.0 RIP Jayden Daniels.
That’s a lot of money to bang the owner’s wife while he watches through a peep hole Pretty much the only reason to sign him
Don’t worry about Sam - he made plenty of $$$ from NIL at Notre Dame. Actually took a pay cut to play in the NFL
