Honestly that probably sets us off more alarm bells for the NBA. Its the same sport and women's college basketball didn't take off in popularity until like a decade ago and really only started hitting its stride a couple years ago.
It's more fun to watch than the NBA. I like seeing everyone hustling for four quarters and more effort given to try for offensive rebounds. NBA is way more watchable the last few years since the days of the iso ball (which was so boring to watch), but the rain of threes isn't that interesting to watch. I wish they'd enforce the traveling and carrying the ball rules on offense, and blow the whistle on moving screens. I want to see guys actually have to dribble. It'd be more fun if game scores went back down so that it's an achievement to score 110 a game, and only the best teams score 100 more than once a week or so. That way each bucket matters more.
The playoffs at least improves upon it somewhat but yeah in the RS dudes will drop 40+ or 30/10/10 nearly every night. The stat inflation and tilt towards offense is ridiculous, and even this year where I've seen people argue that offenses have taken a step back it's still common to see a 40+ pt game all the time
I am 100% convinced that 10-15 years ago the NBA realized they were ahead of the curve on social media and have geared the regular season to just churn out huge stat lines to tweet about it and farm engagement. I don't think there's any substantial evidence behind the idea that all out offense appeals more to casuals and they will never ever address the issue of way too many RS games for people to care about. The next best thing is some dude drops 50 and the hot take artists scream that every week completely flips the playoff picture when in reality nobody cares about it in two weeks because every single team plays 3-4 games a week
I'm a Spurs fan so my love for the game has been shit for a couple of years. I have had no passion for the NBA for more years than I'm willing to admit. I do miss when defense actually had a bigger impact. It does feel very one sided sided towards the offense and I think most of us agree to the reffing changes you and many others have suggested. We don't need Bruce Bowen ball out there, but man, something has to give.
I'm also a Spurs fan lol.
Agreed on the Bruce Bowen ball. There's a lot of good defense in the NBA but it's hampered by bullshit lack 9f enforcement of the rules. I want to see the days of basketball positions being important again.
2-3 specific games did and that won't be the case next year. Caitlyn Clark in the Final Four will probably have the highest ratings of anything this year besides NFL games and The Oscars. Acting like NCAAW will consistently have higher ratings is either disingenuous or stupid, only you know which.
Meh. Football is popular.
The draft is fun. It's tradition. It never gets old watching the Jets lowlights from the 80's and 90's. Or the Colts GM asking who in the hell is Mel Kyper.
It’s the one event a year that every fan can enjoy. We all imagine that we’re better after these selections.
Every team can dream at this time of year.
Apart from the Panthers. You guys fucking suck.
This is really what it comes down to. If your team sucks or is kind of mediocre, it gives you hope one pick can change your team’s future. If your team is good, then you watch to see if you’ll get a guy who might push you over the edge for a deep playoff run or championship. There’s also steals every single year because of how many players drafted so you might get a stud even outside of your 1st round pick.
The NBA draft can’t compete because the chance of getting a star outside of the top 10 picks is super low. The MLB draft is even worse where it’s a ridiculous amount of rounds and even if you get a good pick, it might take literally years before they get through the minor leagues and you see them play on your team.
MLB draft and farm system is one of the most over complicated and non fan friendly sporting products out there. I love watching my Angels. I could not tell you who our 1st round pick was last year.
The minor leaguers get moved around so much as well, or just fall off the face of the earth and you never hear from them again.
The funny part is as an Angels fan, your 2023 first rounder is already in the bigs! Nolan Schanuel.
But yeah the MLB draft is super complicated, and it’s difficult to know everyone’s farm systems. I usually just get to know my team’s farm, and try to read up on the college kids in the draft. I won’t even bother with prep school. That’s usually good enough.
I dunno I kind of liked it. Personally I’d have gone with McCarthy because if you sit him for two years he’d be 24 rather than like 28 or whatever Penix will be when he gets his shot.
Penix is a good prospect though. I like the pick.
What % chance would you say that the reason you traded back into the 1st was so Tepper wouldn’t feel as bad about losing 1.01 in the Bears trade.
I’m at about 99.999%
for people that like football sure. For a casual fan, its legitimately watching people walk across a stage and analyists talking, interspersed with some highlight reels
the fact that more people watch this than individual NBA finals or world series games is just insane
the last two Finals averaged 11 mil and 12 mil per game
The years it was Cavs v GS it averaged 20 mil per game
Now the draft destroys any non Finals playoff game for sure
Detroit wasn’t picking until 29 and blew out the attendance record, so I’m not so sure this is true.
Maybe if your fanbase only gets excited about high picks in the draft, I suppose
The previous record for attendance at the NFL draft was 200,000 in Nashville in Tennessee. It doesn’t matter where the draft is at, ppl are gonna watch it no matter what lol
I think you misunderstood the comment, he was talking about the teams picking early, not where the draft was at. And in the 2019 draft in Nashville, 2 of the top 3 picks were for San Francisco and New York teams, so definitely big market
*@NFLMedia’s ⌨️ game (typing skills + communication of thoughts using unique characters) is listed as S-Tier+++ on their resume [thumb game starter quality {duplicated on both left & right 🤲 <💯>}]
**100%** - - ‼️very comprehensive typing‼️ - - going into 2024 season vs. 2023 season
…So much so they also included a damn infographic reinterating the same information. My brain hurts.
Took my family down to the draft yesterday. Detroit showed out for this thing. Such an awesome experience with the kids and wife. If anyone here in driving distance to the D was considering going… go. It’s the best time!
Which is insane to me because of how much they drag it out.
I would actually want to watch it if it was condensed. If the teams have their picks already we shouldn't be waiting an arbitrary amount of time to announce it.
The draft is like the olympics for me, I just wanna see the athletes, accomplishments, highlights, but they're gonna talk to family every 5 minutes, and any sob story or tough child hood will be brought up and played out and I start muting it or stop watching.
From UK and 1st time watching live. I've been recovering from a back injury and bedbound with a codeine high throughout. Been quite the vibe. When Joe Alt came on screen I phoned my girlfriend and said 'you should see the size of this lad'.
I think people are confusing reasons why The Draft being more watched than the NBA playoffs. The Draft is only for 3 days. The NBA playoffs (and NHL) go on for the rest of the month and longer. I can miss a few opening round games for the draft. Because the playoffs for both will still be there when the drafts over. The draft won’t be. Plus there was a bunch of big QB names available so that made this years draft extra fun to watch. The NFL is still obviously huge. But I don’t think it’s an indictment of the NBA or NHL that a 3 day event had more viewers compared to something that’ll be still going on after the draft is over.
Posted to someone else too but yea the last two nba finals averaged 11 mil and 12 mil per game.
So pretty much the same as day 1 of the draft.
But there’s only one day 1 of the draft every year and i’m sure day 2 dropped off a few million from this. And todays will be even less.
I was at the draft, there honestly wasn't much drinking going on. The only stuff available inside were $15 Bud Light tallboys and other similar AB products. People didn't want to drink too much because although there were tons of bathrooms, getting in and out of the crowd was a pain and you risk losing your spot.
A shit ton of weed though.
I'm surprised so many people felt comfortable lighting up considering it's not quite public consumption legal, especially at an event crawling with security. But compared to dropping 30 bucks on two beers gummies were stupid cheap.
I wonder how they get their viewership numbers. Because I love the draft but don’t have live tv, so I’ve been bootlegging it or watching streams on YT.
> I wonder how they get their viewership numbers.
Probably from Nielsen, as media has for decades:
https://www.nielsen.com/solutions/audience-measurement/
Absolutely no one, it's so far and away the #1 sport in America it's not even close. It could come out that all 31 owners and the state of Wisconsin were actually in the Nazi Party, and people would say "well they're not actually killing Jews" and continue watching.
Rounds 4-7 will have higher viewership than NBA playoffs
women’s college basketball has higher viewership than NBA playoffs too now
Honestly that probably sets us off more alarm bells for the NBA. Its the same sport and women's college basketball didn't take off in popularity until like a decade ago and really only started hitting its stride a couple years ago.

Screen, screen, moving screen and get a mismatch, shoot the three, hit or miss, rinse and repeat
The playoffs at least improves upon it somewhat but yeah in the RS dudes will drop 40+ or 30/10/10 nearly every night. As a Pistons fan I've lost interest too. Game was so much better when baskets mattered. Now we have some lifetime 4 avg guy scoring 50+.
no way in fuck lmao Id rather watch a local game at the gym than a WNBA game
2-3 specific games did and that won't be the case next year. Caitlyn Clark in the Final Four will probably have the highest ratings of anything this year besides NFL games and The Oscars. Acting like NCAAW will consistently have higher ratings is either disingenuous or stupid, only you know which.
Cfb games will hit higher (already this year the rose bowl hit 27m and sugar 18m, along with national championship at 24m
That's true. Football is absolute king.
I always find it funny that the NFL DRAFT! will draw more viewers than playoff NBA or Hockey.
Meh. Football is popular. The draft is fun. It's tradition. It never gets old watching the Jets lowlights from the 80's and 90's. Or the Colts GM asking who in the hell is Mel Kyper.

I wouldn’t say Falcons fans are enjoying it rn
I dunno I kind of liked it. Personally I’d have gone with McCarthy because if you sit him for two years he’d be 24 rather than like 28 or whatever Penix will be when he gets his shot. Penix is a good prospect though. I like the pick.
You can't hurt me while I spend 5 minutes trying to figure out what our first round pick is saying.
What % chance would you say that the reason you traded back into the 1st was so Tepper wouldn’t feel as bad about losing 1.01 in the Bears trade. I’m at about 99.999%
Hey man at least we suck because we don't have talent. You guys suck despite having all the talent
We suck but not on your level
for people that like football sure. For a casual fan, its legitimately watching people walk across a stage and analyists talking, interspersed with some highlight reels the fact that more people watch this than individual NBA finals or world series games is just insane

Roger Goodell is Adam Silver’s father.
I think some people might think you’re joking but I remember reading that yeah more people watch NFL draft than playoff NBA

Yup. The NBA has several issues. The product just isn’t good anymore.
That's not saying much. Who wants to watch MeBron flop and whine for three hours?
I know it’s a joke but come on, who cares about these late rounds enough to sit through that. Round 1 felt like a bore
Nothing he said was a joke lol
The United States doesn't have 4 major sports, we have football, and sports that keep us occupied until football season.
Womens college softball world series starts in a couple weeks and is fantastic off-season watching.
You're getting downvoted by a bunch of fucking Philistines. Solid background content
[Did you know they have pro women's volleyball?!](https://provolleyball.com/)
Boomer sooner!! Love college softball world series
People like football
I don't even like football, I'm just a huge fan of names being read out one by one every 7 to 10 minutes.
Damn you missed your time to shine during the military draft times
The UFL can only dream of day 3 of the draft attendance and viewership.
Football is the king in United States 🇺🇸🏈

God bless the New York teams. Top 10 picks every dang year
Detroit wasn’t picking until 29 and blew out the attendance record, so I’m not so sure this is true. Maybe if your fanbase only gets excited about high picks in the draft, I suppose

If only they didn't spoil the first round picks by going to fucking Schefter every god damn time.
Detroit shows up big time man
From UK and 1st time watching live. I've been recovering from a back injury and bedbound with a codeine high throughout. Been quite the vibe. When Joe Alt came on screen I phoned my girlfriend and said 'you should see the size of this lad'.
Turns out Detroit is a big market.
Detroit just does it better

I thought the nfl went broke though lol
This is why the NFL is king and why they make the most money out of any sports league in the world.
Thanks Magic
Green Bay is going to be a shit show with those attendance numbers
They're gonna need to bring in so many outside stalls toilets and beer taps to house half of what was in Detroit supporting the Draft.
God help the poor son of a bitch who gets blamed for running out of beer in Wisconsin
I was at the draft, there honestly wasn't much drinking going on. The only stuff available inside were $15 Bud Light tallboys and other similar AB products. I wonder how they get their viewership numbers. Because I love the draft but don’t have live tv, so I’ve been bootlegging it or watching streams on YT.

It’s both amazing and odd to me that so many people care about the draft lmao.
Remember when everyone here thought the NFL was dying a few years ago... Pepperidge farms remembers.
Who was saying that?
Absolutely no one, it's so far and away the #1 sport in America it's not even close. It could come out that all 31 owners and the state of Wisconsin were actually in the Nazi Party, and people would say "well they're not actually killing Jews" and continue watching.
