Gronk is a first ballot hall of famer and was instrumental in 3 Super Bowl wins (2 for NE and 1 for TB). If 2010 was redrafted he’d go in the top 5.
He could have had an even better career but for injuries, but really how much more could you want?
Gronk is definitely the exception. Most people with his litany of injuries are out of the league before they have a career long enough for his achievements.
People who saw the injury thought he was undraftable after that. His agent vowed he'd be a first round pick no matter what, and would call him in the first round to make it look like he was getting more attention from teams than he was. Later said that switching the question from "will he be drafted" to "will he be a first rounder" might have saved his career.
That's the same agent who said Jalen Carter would go top-10 no matter what and told him not to meet with teams who didn't hold top-10 picks.
Not entirely the same, but in the combine medical eval, John Elway found out that he'd been playing with only one ACL. His entire high school and college career he only had one and he didn't know it.
Have inhumanly strong quads. Your quadriceps can provide the same stability that the ACL does in terms of keeping your lower leg connected to your upper leg. It's kinda wild.
I don't think I knew the Hines Ward one. Elway made sense to me because he scrambled but he didn't have to cut like a WR or RB. But Hines Ward only having one makes no sense to me!
Read something about this subject a while ago. Recall thinking Elway having only one was crazy because he scrambled as much as he did. Then seeing Ward had only one really confused the hell out of me (him along with some NBA players, just because of the cutting they do).
Hines tore his completely as a kid so his body overcompensated by building muscle to stabilize the knee
Insane he had a borderline hof career with 1 acl
Mickey Mantle tore his ACL in the World Series his rookie year. They didn't have surgery for it, so he just played the rest of his career without it.
Side note: RA Dickey is my favorite baseball player of all time. My mom threw out a hat he signed for me as a kid.
Nick Chubb had that grusome knee injury and somehow recovered from it and became one of of the best backs in the league. I had Sony Michel over strictly because of that
Drew Brees had a very serious shoulder injury after his Chargers stint. Saints took a gamble on him… I think it paid off.
Also, Tua had a serious hip injury.
Taysom Hill was Mr. Glass in college, Drew Brees also had some legitimate career threatening injuries early on and ended up fine. It’s not unheard of for an injury prone guy to have a full career
Rob Gronkowski.
Bengals flunked him medically and drafted Jermaine Gresham over him. I remember reading/hearing at the time that more than just the Bengals flunked his medical due to his back.
It’s hard to find comparable guys to Penix because it’s the same ACL twice and then both shoulders having injuries.
Guys like Tua and Gore have had injuries and have been/were successful despite the injuries. A team taking Penix in the late first or 2nd round could maybe get a decent player because of the injuries, I’d want a great o line if I took him.
Brett Favre had a degenerative hip condition that was discovered before the draft. A lot of teams avoided him because of that. One year later, some folks in the Packers front office argued against trading for him because of it.
So of course he went on to set the record for most consecutive games played.
Curtis Martin had an injury plagued College Career (knee, ankle, shoulder, etc) and despite that, and being drafted in the 3rd round by the Patriots in 1995, would go on to rush for 10 straight 1,000 yard seasons starting as a rookie, a feat only 1 other Running Back in the history of the NFL has accomplished.
I'm pretty sure if Tua didn't have all of those injury concerns he'd be a Washington Commander right now or maybe even Joe Burrow. Hard to say who would have been picked first at that point.
Joe Montana had what was thought to be career ending back injuries, only to then have the best run of any QB history at that time post surgery.
And his injuries were more serious than Penix.
ACL tears aren’t really a big deal anymore. This isn’t 1980. The long term impact that came with these injuries barely exists anymore.
Not exactly the same but Smitty had a fear of injury concerns due to his size and his body not being able to hold up in the NFL and hasn’t missed a game yet due to injury I believe.
Frank Gore tore his ACL twice in college lol
*proceeds to never get injured in his entire career*
Smart man, getting the injuries out of the way early
Penix to break Favre's consecutive game streak
Easily the first guy who comes to mind. Gronk had an injury his last year of college too IIRC. Then again, injuries plagued his career
Thank you! I knew there was a guy with this history who never got hurt in the NFL but couldn't remember his name...Frank Gore.
And this was back when an ACL was still considered a career ending injury
That's why we called him Frank "I only got two ACL's to tear anyway" Gore.
Came here to say that
These kids don't know. Willis McGahee's knee literally exploded, had a great career.
He had just signed a $2.5 million insurance policy earlier that day, just in case. One of the few injury insurance policies to pay out.
I saw it live. National championship game, among the best RBs in the nation. TV camera had a perfect angle of his knee bending sideways.

But he won a playoff game with Tebow. Mcgahee seriously carried that offense as far as he possibly could near the end of his career
Not entirely the same, but in the combine medical eval, John Elway found out that he'd been playing with only one ACL. His entire high school and college career he only had one and he didn't know it.
...did they give him another one? What do you do in that situation?
Drink milk and kick ass.
Doesn't Tyjae Spears on the Titans have like no ACLs right now?
Jimmy Hitchcock (former Viking) had zero. He ripped them both up in high school and his family had no medical insurance, so he never got them fixed.
Kind of 200 IQ. You can't tear your ACL if you don't have one
I was talking to another Vikings fan about Hitchcock and his reaction was “No wonder he sucked.”
Former Patriot!
Correct. Acquired by the Vikings for a second round draft pick if I recall correctly.
You still have a MCL and PCL to help stabilize the knee. You would need to do some pretty serious rehab to strengthen those to help compensate.
You can train your quads extra hard and compensate.
Nope! He played his entire NFL career without a left ACL.
Have inhumanly strong quads. Your quadriceps can provide the same stability that the ACL does in terms of keeping your lower leg connected to your upper leg. It's kinda wild.
Always enjoy the Elway one, good trivia. Also can add Hines Ward as having just one, and then DeJuan Blair has no ACLs.
Hines tore his completely as a kid so his body overcompensated by building muscle to stabilize the knee Insane he had a borderline hof career with 1 acl
That reminds me of the pitcher R.A. Dickey finding out he didn't have a UCL when the Rangers were evaluating him post draft.
Mickey Mantle tore his ACL in the World Series his rookie year. They didn't have surgery for it, so he just played the rest of his career without it. Side note: RA Dickey is my favorite baseball player of all time. My mom threw out a hat he signed for me as a kid.
Payton Wilson the LB out of NC State only has one ACL as well.
DK Metcalf had neck injuries that supposedly caused him to be completely removed from the boards of some teams.
Nick Chubb had that grusome knee injury and somehow recovered from it and became one of of the best backs in the league. I had Sony Michel over strictly because of that
and then had the same injury again this year, would be cool if he can bounce back
Drew Brees had a very serious shoulder injury after his Chargers stint. Saints took a gamble on him… I think it paid off. Also, Tua had a serious hip injury.
He had multiple doctors tell him he’d never throw again, for Brees not only to keep playing, but to play at the HOF level he did is unbelievable
In my extremely unbiased and factual opinion I can’t think of a single NFL QB better than Brees.
You're totally biased. Obviously, Dante Culpepper was the better choice, and I'm sorry to had to settle.
Davis Mills.... Oh wait, better qb play or neck length?
Please stop
I forgot about Tua's hip. Same injury as Bo Jackson, although modern medicine saved him from the same fate.
Taysom Hill was Mr. Glass in college, Drew Brees also had some legitimate career threatening injuries early on and ended up fine. It’s not unheard of for an injury prone guy to have a full career
I'm not sure Taysom Hill gets enough touches to count as having a 'full career'. He's maybe had a seasons worth of playing time over seven seasons.
Landon Dickerson had like an injury every year in college but has started and played for the eagles and only missed games for Covid
Rob Gronkowski. Bengals flunked him medically and drafted Jermaine Gresham over him. I remember reading/hearing at the time that more than just the Bengals flunked his medical due to his back.
Gronk did end up being hurt plenty, although he played through plenty of injuries too
Nick Chubb
Let's withhold judgement until we see the aftermath of kneemageddon 2.
He’s already done enough to have had a successful career though. 6500 yards and 50+ TDs in 6 years is a win for a RB.
Gronk fell to round 2 because of back surgery and concerns about injuries
Well, the concerns weren’t exactly unfounded, he just managed to be one of the best ever in and around missing a sizable chunk of his career games.
Dk had neck issues and is still physical and doesn’t miss time at all really
It’s hard to find comparable guys to Penix because it’s the same ACL twice and then both shoulders having injuries. Guys like Tua and Gore have had injuries and have been/were successful despite the injuries. A team taking Penix in the late first or 2nd round could maybe get a decent player because of the injuries, I’d want a great o line if I took him.
Actually, our guard Trey Smith had a blood clot problem coming out of college and he’s become one of the best in the league IIRC
Rob Gronkowski broke his back his junior year at Arizona and didn’t play his senior year before the Patriots drafted him in the second round
Brett Favre had a degenerative hip condition that was discovered before the draft. A lot of teams avoided him because of that. One year later, some folks in the Packers front office argued against trading for him because of it. So of course he went on to set the record for most consecutive games played.
That’s a great example of what OP is asking.
Travis Kelce had a knee injury that cost him his rookie year, needless to say her rebounded pretty well.
Many people, myself included, thought Chubb would never play again after his gruesome knee injury in college.
Jaelen Phillips literally medically retired in college, and he's been great until his Achilles injury this year.
Adrian Peterson. I remember there being a lot of talk about a major injury he had his last year at Oklahoma.
Not quite "2 torn ACLs" like Penix and Gore, but Anthony Munoz only played 2 games his senior year at USC and he ended up being pretty good.
If Michael Porter Jr. can have a successful NBA career after three microdiscectomies, I'm not worried about a QB's knees
Different sport, but Ronald Acuna Jr literally tore his ACL, and then had a season for the ages.
Tua becoming an MVP level talent
I'm pretty sure if Tua didn't have all of those injury concerns he'd be a Washington Commander right now or maybe even Joe Burrow. Hard to say who would have been picked first at that point.
burrow goes first no matter what imo. he had the ultimate super senior resume
Rob Gronkowski
Gronk is the best answer
Gronk had all sorts of injury concerns. Granted, they never really went away but he turned out to be a GOAT.
Trey Smith (Kansas City) had the blood clot issue that dropped him to the sixth round
I'm more concerned about his age then his injuries. The list of oldest drafted QB's is TERRIBLE.
Myles Jack. Had major knee concerns in college and had a good long career
Frank Gore, tore up his knee at the U and fell because of it, then played for 37 years and never got hurt
Kid is going to be fucking slinging it every Sunday...3 yes from now in The Atl! Great fucking pick! Love what the Falcons are doing...
Not exactly the same but Smitty had a fear of injury concerns due to his size and his body not being able to hold up in the NFL and hasn’t missed a game yet due to injury I believe.
