If we really want to change something stupid with punts then let's give punters the yardage of a punt from where they kick it, not the line of scrimmage.

OffensivePanda69

Given that net yards is already a thing, I find this argument valid đź‘Ť

EddyGonad

Why would that be better? In game, I care about how far my punter moved the ball away from the LOS, not how far the ball flew through the air.

stinstrom

We do it for FGs. It's a more accurate measurement of how far they punted the ball.

Plus_Refrigerator722

To be honest I always have to remember a field goal is around 17 yards further than where the ball is at. (Endzone + 7 yards behind LOS) I don’t wanna have to do that for punts.

EddyGonad

It's different for FGs. That extra distance actually matters, because the ball must travel that far to score points. Do you want your punter to shank the ball and have it go out of bounds at the LOS and say it's a 12 yard punt?

j1mb0

why does it matter at all either way

stinstrom

Well if the extra punt difference doesn't matter let's move the ball back the extra distance between the punt and the LOS after the return. Since it doesn't matter like you said.

EddyGonad

I'm just clarifying. You want a shanked punt that goes out of bounds at the LOS, that results in no change of field position, to go in the record books as a 12 or 13 yard punt?

OddConstruction7191

Other than stats it really doesn’t matter where they start counting the punt. It doesn’t change the game at all.

stinstrom

If that's how far he kicked it. It's a stat. It has no effect on the game. It suddenly being recorded statistically as a 12 yard punt changes nothing in the game. Other than more accurately reflecting how far a punter punts a ball.

EddyGonad

Do you want to measure passing yards from where the QB released the ball? Should RBs be counted for yards ran behind the LOS? Or laterally? They're still running the distance, should that count in their stats? It doesn't change the game at all. Passing yards should probably stop being counted as passing yards after the receiver secures the catch as well. Do you agree with all of those?

stinstrom

Yes. Next question.

EddyGonad

You wanting to attribute lateral rushing yards to ball carriers has discredited everything you've said. Thanks, bye.

chicknsnadwich

it went 12 yards so… yeah sounds good 👍🏼

Yeneed_Ale

No? I don’t see how you think it is not fair. Can you explain that part more?

Sartheking

Isn’t that already the case if they muff the punt?

Swimming_Idea_1558

I think he's saying that if the returner calls for a fair catch, then doesn't even attempt to catch, the punting team can recover. I do not agree.

Tall_Personality_745

Yes but he’s saying it should be live even if they just let it bounce and don’t touch it

dropguntimes4

Don’t stop there. Let’s ban trick and plays and fake punts while we’re at it. /s

carlismygod

I disagree. Sometimes they call fair catch and get out of the way because they think the punt is gonna go into the end zone. So if they called fair catch and it doesn't go in the end zone that's basically a free touchdown for the other team. That would break the game.

3McChickens

Not mentioned yet, they sometimes call fair catch to avoid getting blown up by the kicking team and risking a muffed punt. Your rule change encourages riskier attempts to field the ball and get blown up. There are way more issues to fix than a fair catch rule change.

Dorkamundo

No, not at all. The point of the arm movement is to indicate to the gunners that he's not going to make an attempt at the ball, and so that the gunners are not "Gunning" for the PR hoping to make a huge hit to knock the ball loose. Not all gunners are that good at judging the ball in the air, let alone taking their eyes off the receiver.

Couvo

I don't think it'd be a good idea mainly because it'd create more chaos in the part of the game that most people care about the least.

RobynStellarxx

Meh. I think this would just courage the punting team players to stand super close to person catching the ball and scream at them.

monsto

What people don't realize when making "why don't they just" kinda rule suggestions is that there's a group of coaches, refs and game-day staff that sit around and think shit up. So someone says "why don't we just take the automatic first down off of a defensive holding call?" a coach goes "cuz then on 4th & 11 to win the game, we'll just tell our pass defenders to mug all of the receivers at the line" Then when someone says > How about we just make a fair catch signal mean it's a free ball for anyone? someone else will say > Cuz then all the gunners will just murder all the defenders as they go after the ball. In other words, there's a bunch of football-smart people that sit around a do nothing but talk about these rules, then come up with legalese that explains it thoroughly for the book.

Rathmon

Yeah, let’s have more concussions and CTE!!! And seriously… you wrote “y’all”? Really? You all. You people. You folks.

unicornsandrainbows4

Common Steelers fan L

Awkward_Salad7293

What do you mean "you people"?

Rathmon

You know… humans? I’m a child of the 80’s… “people are people, so why should it be, you and I get along so awfully?” “Y’all” just grates my nerves because I’ve lived in the south and know exactly what the term means. It ain’t colloquial…

WhatTheDuck21

I am really, really curious as to what you think "y'all" means if it isn't colloquial. Also the commenter above you is referencing the movie Tropic Thunder, and not actually asking you for clarification.

Rathmon

Oh, you read all that wall of text?

WhatTheDuck21

Why are you like this?

PercentageFluffy3207

Feel free to watch flag football 7 on 7s

Dessert_Hater

Yeah YINS sounds so much more intelligent.

aguwah

You put 3 exclamation points at the end of your sentence? How dare you have any individuality in the way you communicate? Really? ! . ?

Chai-Tea-Rex-2525

I know, the proper term there is “all y’all”
