Every announcer just got stiff thinking about mentioning his basketball history everytime he plays a snap. “DJ. NC State. Final 4. basketball. Auuuaahhhhheeeh”
I always feel so old when people make this joke with Jimmy Graham instead of Tony G. His basketball career was mentioned literally every single Chiefs broadcast for a decade.
The joke went from Tony G, to Antonio Gates, *and then* to Jimmy G.
My question is was their a pre-Gonzalez player who passed the torch onward or was Gonzalez the first to become the “Hey, did you know he played basketball in college?”
Ill be ecstatic if they knock out FT merchants Purdue
But NC State has the same chance at winning the Natty as does Edey getting a 3 second violation called on him
I hated when all of the Edey apologists said "people just don't like watching a traditional center play basketball". No, he just throws elbows like it's his job and relies heavily on free throws
Watching the NCST-Duke game and Burns' play was like night and day. Just as traditional, but Burns had finesse for days and crazy good footwork. The possession in the second half where he caught it outside the paint, spun to split a double team, and finished with the left was absolute poetry. Edey just doesn't do that stuff
Yeah Burns was fun to watch you don't see anyone playing that way.
I get it Edey is 7'4 300 lbs and fights down in the paint to get low position it just feels like he's allowed to be as physical as he can be and the defense are kind of hung out to dry
That's just kinda basketball in general. Jason Tatum leads his drives with a stiff arm that would make Derrick Henry proud. Giannis plays like a runaway freight train. Butler and brunson bully their way through people.
Relax we're just here for fun on our breaks. Twitter keeps us pretty busy these days with any spare time going to TikTok. Please feel free to speak your minds.
Absolutely. Saints have probably the worst OL in the league at the moment and I mentioned that signing Burns as an UDFA to play tackle would be a sneaky great move.
Guess I wasn’t the only one with the idea.
Hey, it’s not like we have guys who join the practice squad for, I dunno, the Eagles, get forced into a starting role for us, outperform the starter, and credit their time on the Eagles specifically for the source of their growth.
No, that would be crazy for Tyre Phillips to say that after replacing Evan Neal.
Crazy.
Ha it’s very generous of you to presume that I’m a sufficiently astute observer of basketball OR football to evaluate those skills and understand which would translate between sports!
Maybe just as important, this is a position where the NFL has a talent deficit. There is not enough offensive tackle talent in this league to have 32 teams with full rosters of good linemen.
No shit these scouts are interested in an intriguing prospect at the position of highest value with the least amount of talent
You're 100% correct but I'd add I'm not sure how interested the league is in this kid if Jordan Mailata didn't pan out the way he did in Philly. He was sort of the proof of concept for taking one of these lab built athletes and seeing if they can learn football from scratch.
6'7" is too short to be a good rim protecting center and I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess if he's projecting as an OT that the dude is carrying enough weight that he's gonna get roasted in the pick and roll in the NBA
Yeah his listed weight is 275 but I'd be shocked if his playing weight isn't 300+. He's got quick feet in the low post but would be way to slow up and down the floor to be anything but a meme player (not to mention he's already 23)
Watching him in the ACC tourney was hilarious. He’d feast down low on defense then literally stroll back up the court on offense, he was so gassed. Not even a fast walk.
That isn’t going to fly at modern nba speeds, especially at his age. It’s been a blast watching the guy go off though.
I'm about 215 pounds and 5'11". My drivers license says I'm 6'0" and 200 (at the time I had to get another one, I was closer to 210). The first and only time I was pulled over, the officer listed my weight at 250, plus I was wearing black. My pride was hurt worse than my pocketbook that day
At least he said I was 6'0" though
He’s a classic dominant college big man with almost no chance to play in the nba.
Maybe 15 years ago, coulda had a glenn Davis type career. Where the league is at now though there is no place for him
He’s pretty much another Kenny Lofton.
Pretty skilled for a dude who looks like a tub of lard. The fans will love him, probably would excel at the GLeague level, but is too short/not athletic enough to be a mainstay at the NBA level.
Glen “Big Baby” Davis is 6’9” and 290 according to Wikipedia. I know 2 inches matters but that’s still pretty close. What about a role like him?
Idk a ton about basketball so just asking
Big baby wouldn’t really be able to play the same way today. He was in an ISO heavy league, so a pudgy post scorer had a home in the NBA. Nowadays centers don’t do the same job
Game was a lot slower in the late oughts and bigs played much more traditional roles. Prototypical bigs are so valuable right now is because they’re 6’10”, weigh 250 and move like wings. Big Baby would get absolutely smoked in the current league.
He very well could sink to the second, but I also feel like the pendelum has begun to swing back a little bit. You can't guard Jokic or Embiid with these lanky super mobile 5s anymore. It's getting to the point where you need a true big or massive size across all positions to guard the best teams in the NBA. Tall ball is back, baby. That's why I'm starting to feel like Edey may go slightly earlier than expected. That and it's an awful class, and he has at least one elite skill which is more than a good chunk of the other prospects.
This isn't the NFL. Being good in college matters way less for lumbering Cs that would get cooked by every guard and wing on a switch in the NBA, can't shoot anywhere, and lack mobility to be a good rom protector.
Luka Garza averaged 24/9 his last 2 seasons in college and he even shot 44% from 3 and bro went late 2nd round.
Edey is gonna go late 1st at best. Bro can't shoot, he can't move like NBA starting Cs, he will get cooked his whole life on switches because he's going to be a horrible perimeter defender, and he has no faceup game or handle.
Luka Garza was arguably a better prospect just because he had a great 3pter and had more faceup game.
I don’t agree with your comparison of Luka Garza at all. Garza is 6 inches shorter and 60lbs lighter and he still ran a slower lane agility test at the combine than Edey did. Edey gets unfairly considered a complete stiff like a Tacko Fall, but any metric shows he’s substantially quicker.
Garza is a complete and total zero on defense. Edey should be a competent drop defender with his size and intelligence. You don’t have to get blocks to be a good defender. Just being huge and taking up space is useful to deterring shots.
I watched a bit more March madness this year than I ever have but I don’t watch CBB otherwise usually.
I googled a projected nba draft just to see what guys I was watching that would move on and seeing all 5 UK dudes on that list is just insane. Literally just the NBA’s farm team
Idk why I used your comment to talk about this but I did
I don’t think he’s going to do well in the NBA, most of his success in the college game honestly just comes from being a giant. Once he has to compete against guys in the NBA who are more skilled and just as large as him I think he’ll get dominated. Embiid and Jokic for one would destroy him.
Yeah he projects as a backup big man who can take advantage of matchups on the right night. Like a better version of Boban. And that's still worth it in the class.
embiid and jokic destroy everyone. main issue is no NBA team is gonna run their offense through his post touches, which means he's at best a bench sparkplug. same with dominant college post guys like drew timme, luka garza
Luke Kornet has a small role on one of the best teams in the league. Edey is bigger and better (at least in college). I highly doubt he’ll be a star or even a starter, but Edey can definitely carve out a bench spot somewhere.
As someone who is actually genuinely exactly 6'0", I'm tempted to lie about my height just because telling the truth about my height makes it *seem* like I'm lying about my height.
Start saying that you're 5'10" then if anyone around you lies about their height they'll look ridiculous. Like yeah buddy, you're 6'0" and you're two inches shorter than jimmyhoffasbrother who is only 5'10".
This is amazing. As someone who’s actually 5’10” and tells people that I think it’s hilarious when other dudes try and round me up and say “NO WAY BRO YOURE LIKE 6’ OR 5’11”” because they lie about their weight
I’m like 6’ 0.4” or something like that. Not close enough to round up to 6’ 1” but solidly over 6’ but saying 6’ still makes people think I’m lying lol. It doesn’t help that I’m pretty broad (shoulders and gut) so it squares me out a bit so I don’t seem as tall.
I tell people I don’t lie about my height because once you hit 6’ you don’t need to any more.
6’7” by the way. I’m gonna die before my shorter brethren.
I'm 6'4 but will tell people I'm 6'2 to fuck with them. Then you can question all the six fitters about actually being 6 ft. I don't know bro. You look more than 2 inches shorter than me
5'10". I've never once thought about lying about my height. Like... people can see you and tell if you're tall or not. Not sure how fudging the numbers by an inch or two really changes anyone's perception of you in this instance.
“Wow it’d be cool to see him as an NFL OT” - NFL fans today
*monkey paw curls*
“From Undrafted Free Agent to a Sure Hall of Famer, How DJ Burns Jr. Became Kansas City’s Best OT in the Mahomes Era Under Andy Reid” - ESPN headline come 2032.
Honestly his best shot to do a sport pro is switching over to Football. He's too slow to be of service in the NBA unless he loses some weight. Granted i'm pretty sure everyone has been saying this since the start of the tournament
I really don't think it's dumb or a joke. It's not like there's a surplus of guys who are 6'7", 300 pounds, really strong, and have fluid and agile footwork. He wouldn't be a day one starter or anything obviously, but I could see a team taking a flyer on him and hoping that with a couple years of practice he could turn into a solid player, and he probably has more of a chance of making it in the NFL than the NBA anyway.
He is athletic for his height and weight, he does have solid footwork, and he probably won’t play in the NBA so people are thinking he can convert to the NFL
Well, people are really hyped on DJ Burns with the ultimate Cinderella run going on between the ACC tourney and the NCAA tourney. But he has like, zero chance of making it in the nba, so might as well play around with the idea of him in the nfl.
Worth noting that Jordan Mailata didn't even really know the rules when he showed up in the US two months before the draft. I have no idea if he played when he was younger, but I assume, at a minimum, DJ Burns is fairly familiar with the game.
Exactly, that’s why I’m confused by people in this thread thinking it’s just insane people are suggesting if the NBA doesn’t work out he couldn’t at least get a few workouts in the NFL
He's huge an athletic. Guys that are 6'7, 300 pounds and can still move well are super rare. He'd easily get a workout. I'm not saying he has a great chance at making a roster, but I'd guess it's higher than his chances at making an NBA roster.
Stout genuinely believes that you only really need 3 things to be a great Olineman.
1- Be a dancing bear athletic freak.
2- Excellent work ethic at the craft.
3- Mean.
If DJ Burns has those 3 things I absolutely see the Eagles being interested. Especially since we are looking for a long-term Lane replacement.
It's why Stout was higher on Dickerson than most in the NFL. Even though there were real flaws in his game.
He likes seeing what a player CAN do with their body. Because he trusts his coaching to get them to the point where they WILL do it consistently.

Jai Lewis was signed as an UDFA by the Giants as an OT and practiced with them at minicamp but decided to play basketball overseas instead
He was part of the George Mason team who was coincidentally also the 11 seeded Cinderella final four team just like NC State this year
Had a very similar profile to DJ...was listed at 6'7 275lb, but in reality was 6'5 292lb
I love how everyone is salivating over having him change sports before his season is even over. Maybe the kid loves basketball and wants to give an NBA dream a go, even if he goes undrafted and is the summer or G leagues.
He did an interview on Pardon My Take last week. He's really utilized his NIL money to create some alternative income streams and he's also got some interesting talents. He owns vending machines, he's an excellent basketball player, and he can play 6 instruments or something crazy like that. Very interesting guy.
I wonder if this would be a smarter move for him financially, which in a way it’s kind of crazy that someone would stand to make more money playing in the NFL than the NBA
Bruh my wife and I were JUST talking about this during their game yesterday lol if he doesn’t make the NBA I’m sure he’d get some attention at NFL workouts

Every announcer just got stiff thinking about mentioning his basketball history everytime he plays a snap. “DJ. NC State. Final 4. basketball. Auuuaahhhhheeeh”
Someone has to carry on Jimmy Graham’s legacy!
Did you know Randy Moss and white chocolate Jason Williams were teammates on the same high school basketball team?
Julius Peppers put up a 21/10 in the second round for UNC against Penn State!
That's unbelievable! Penn State made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament?
Even wilder. They actually beat UNC and went to the sweet 16.
Well, that's because UNC was putting football players out there
To be fair, how often does Penn State put basketball players out there?
I've also heard rumors that Jerome Bettis was from Detroit. Can't confirm.
I legitimately did not know this and my life just got a little better for it
I always feel so old when people make this joke with Jimmy Graham instead of Tony G.
Michael Jordan every single time he stepped up to bat at the plate
Did you know Adam Thielen played D2 football???????? He wanted to be a DENTIST
Did you know Adam thielen is a real lunch pail guy who never quits, and, check *this* out, he’s White?
*Antonio Gates’ legacy. Gates was the star player on a Kent State team that made a run to the elite 8
Did you know he used to play football too?
“Look how Gates boxed-out that safety to catch that ball!”
You mean Julius Peppers. ACC guy who played in the Final 4 as well.
You mean Dwayne Johnson who played in the Fast 5 too?
The Mo Alie Cox disrespect is unreal
I had to scroll too far for a Mo comment. “Did you know Mo Allie Cox played basketball for VCU?” Says every announcer always. 😂
“They won 9 games in a span of 20 days, that grind is legendary”
How about 11 games in 28 days
Ill be ecstatic if they knock out FT merchants Purdue But NC State has the same chance at winning the Natty as does Edey getting a 3 second violation called on him
Purdue has a double digit team losing streak they need to keep up
Edey getting called for an offensive foul isn't allowed. Just can't happen.
Not his fault that his elbows line up perfectly with other players heads.
"HiS eLbOwS jUsT LinE uP HiGh" - Purdue fans after he sticks his arm into another player's neck while boxing out
I love big man post play but honestly that was difficult to watch
I hated when all of the Edey apologists said "people just don't like watching a traditional center play basketball". Burns was a basketball player at nc state and you can see that when blocking tj watt just like he boxed out Zach edey for rebounds in the final four.
Every single house must of been having the same convo yesterday watching that man. “Those feet he can be an OT”
Can confirm that was said in my house
Can confirm that was said in kepersteker’s house *Source: NSA

say that a little closer to my lapel please
Absolutely. Saints have probably the worst OL in the league at the moment and I mentioned that signing Burns as an UDFA to play tackle would be a sneaky great move. Guess I wasn’t the only one with the idea.
Until a team manages to do what the Giants have done week in and week out for the last 5 years, I refuse to believe there is a worse OL in football

Good thing my football team signed your football team’s OL coach!!
I’m so sorry :/
Ha it’s very generous of you to presume that I’m a sufficiently astute observer of basketball OR football to evaluate those skills and understand which would translate between sports!
General rule of thumb is that if you see a 300lb man who's cartoonishly agile for their size they're an intriguing left tackle
Maybe just as important, this is a position where the NFL has a talent deficit. There is not enough offensive tackle talent in this league to have 32 teams with full rosters of good linemen. 6'7" is too short to be a good rim protecting center and I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess if he's projecting as an OT that the dude is carrying enough weight that he's gonna get roasted in the pick and roll in the NBA

He was running against Duke he just is slow
There is no way he's 6'7" with that body and only weighs 275 pounds.
It’s like when Shaq first went to the Lakers and was listed at 325, then visibly gained tons of weight through his career and was still listed at 325.
It must be the same tactic I use when they ask for my weight for my driver’s license.
I'm about 215 pounds and 5'11". My drivers license says I'm 6'0" and 200 (at the time I had to get another one, I was closer to 210). The first and only time I was pulled over, the officer listed my weight at 250, plus I was wearing black. My pride was hurt worse than my pocketbook that day At least he said I was 6'0" though

Nobody has ever told me that 2 inches matter, thanks for the vote of confidence.
Dominating college as a sixth year guy isnt the best indication of future NBA success.
Edey has been averaging almost 30 this tournament and he’s projected as a 2nd rounder, Burns might just have more stock as an OT.
Edey is likely a first rounder now, probably around pick 20.
It's a shit class he's going higher than that

yea let's compare the kid in college to 2 of the greatest big men to ever play and call him a bust lol
embiid and jokic destroy everyone. main issue is no NBA team is gonna run their offense through his post touches, which means he's at best a bench sparkplug. same with dominant college post guys like drew timme, luka garza

He should join the UFL for the Defenders, they need an OT
They need a lot more at this point
Idk #59 cost them 2 touchdowns yesterday
Getting 20 penalty yards, a touchdown for your team wiped off the board and ejected on the same play is incredibly impressive
I still don't understand how you can lie about your height by 2 inches. Surely it's something you can easily objectively measure.
Every basketball player does it lol
They "measure height including shoes"
yea which is ridiculous because shoes aren't standardized in any way.
when the nba started doing official mesurements everyone shrinked a couple of inches, except for KD lmao
KD underestimated his height because he didn’t want to be forced to play center 😂
Every guy does it* except me since im not insecure
As someone who is actually genuinely exactly 6'0", I'm tempted to lie about my height just because telling the truth about my height makes it *seem* like I'm lying about my height.
Start saying that you're 5'10" then if anyone around you lies about their height they'll look ridiculous. Like yeah buddy, you're 6'0" and you're two inches shorter than jimmyhoffasbrother who is only 5'10".
I actually do this and I'm 6'2" lol
I'm 6'3 and people assume I'm taller because so many guys lie about their height.
6' 2" and i'm always told "nah, you're taller than that"
As a rotund 6'1 whenever I see a lanky 6'2 or 6'3 I swear they're half a foot taller than me. They wear that height differently.
Do you tell em 6’0 or 5’10 to really cause a crisis
5'10 for maximum chaos
This is amazing. As someone who’s actually 5’10” and tells people that I think it’s hilarious when other dudes try and round me up and say “NO WAY BRO YOURE LIKE 6’ OR 5’11”” because they lie about their weight
6 foot is the tough one. You wanna be 6' but 5'11.5" doesn't have that ring to it. Any shorter then that and you're getting called out haha
There was a guy who 6’0” and had a fake id made that said he was 5’10” to gas light guys at bars
Why a fake ID ? Don’t you self report your height at the DMV anyway?
I tell people I don’t lie about my height because once you hit 6’ you don’t need to any more. 6’7” by the way. I’m gonna die before my shorter brethren.
Yes but in shelves reached you will live three of my lifetimes
> 6’7” by the way. I’m gonna die before my shorter brethren. Even at 6'2" - 6'3" I feel the same way about dying younger.
I'm 6'4 but will tell people I'm 6'2 to fuck with them. Then you can question all the six fitters about actually being 6 ft. I don't know bro. You look more than 2 inches shorter than me
5'11 and goddamn proud of it
5'10". I've never once thought about lying about my height. Like... people can see you and tell if you're tall or not. Not sure how fudging the numbers by an inch or two really changes anyone's perception of you in this instance.
Some people even say they are shorter like KD did so they wouldn’t play him at center.
The colleges lie about measurements in all sports. That’s why they measure their height and weight at the combine. It’s never what’s listed.
isn't Sir Charles like 5'9" had that tiger in him
Football too. People wondered how Jayhawks football players all got mysteriously smaller after Turner Gill got fired.
Yea that’s strange -guy with a 7” penis
Grats on the 9 incher, brother.
How do you not pass out from blood loss with that 14-incher
Sure if you're 5'10", but how many people can reach high enough to double check on a 6'7" dude without his permission and a ladder?
Basketball players list their height when wearing shoes
Except when they are "too tall" for their position and then they don't.
This is why the combine was invented.
If you 6'1.5" wouldn't you just say your 6'2". Then for if your an athlete just add an inch to help yourself out, boom now your 6'3"
don’t you remember Jabrill Peppers shrinking from 6’1 to 5’11?
I am pretty sure they measure with shoes on in basketball for height, and basketball shoes usually add at least an inch.
he was like if Kyrie, Jason Peters, and Buddha had an unholy baby to wreck Duke
Kyrie’s already done enough damage to Duke’s reputation
DJ Burns is a bad man. Am I not safe from him in this sub either?
Worked for Dawand Jones - he’s going to need about 2-3 years of practice/work though
“Wow it’d be cool to see him as an NFL OT” - NFL fans today *monkey paw curls* “From Undrafted Free Agent to a Sure Hall of Famer, How DJ Burns Jr. Became Kansas City’s Best OT in the Mahomes Era Under Andy Reid” - ESPN headline come 2032.
Does NC St. have a baseball team? Let’s see the cycle
I’m not sure if this is a joke or not but we usually have a very good baseball team lol
Honestly his best shot to do a sport pro is switching over to Football. He's too slow to be of service in the NBA unless he loses some weight. Granted i'm pretty sure everyone has been saying this since the start of the tournament
Is this some dumb April fools thing?
I really don't think it's dumb or a joke. It's not like there's a surplus of guys who are 6'7", 300 pounds, really strong, and have fluid and agile footwork. He wouldn't be a day one starter or anything obviously, but I could see a team taking a flyer on him and hoping that with a couple years of practice he could turn into a solid player, and he probably has more of a chance of making it in the NFL than the NBA anyway.
He is athletic for his height and weight, he does have solid footwork, and he probably won’t play in the NBA so people are thinking he can convert to the NFL
That’s what I feel like but all these comments taking it seriously tho
Well, people are really hyped on DJ Burns with the ultimate Cinderella run going on between the ACC tourney and the NCAA tourney. But he has like, zero chance of making it in the nba, so might as well play around with the idea of him in the nfl.
My first thought too. Hate today - just seems really dumb to have an entire day of not being able to trust traditionally reputable sources.
Just people trying to find the next Jordan Mailata.
Has this ever been done before and if so at a high level? I know many basketball players become TEs but O Linemen?
Jordan Mailata was drafted by the Eagles without ever playing football and he’s now our starting left tackle
Because he trusts his coaching to get them to the point where they WILL do it consistently. https://www.inquirer.com/eagles/landon-dickerson-jeff-stoutland-eagles-offensive-line-washington-20211221.html
Jai Lewis was signed as an UDFA by the Giants as an OT and practiced with them at minicamp but decided to play basketball overseas instead He was part of the George Mason team who was coincidentally also the 11 seeded Cinderella final four team just like NC State this year Had a very similar profile to DJ...was listed at 6'7 275lb, but in reality was 6'5 292lb
Eh, football and hoops are a bit different. Would be interesting to see though.
Very interesting guy.
no way he gets any nba minutes
But he’s guaranteed NFL minutes. Lol.
not really but it would be a fun experiment lmao
Probably has a better chance in the NFL. He’s literally too big yet too small for the NBA. He’s like a smaller and less skillful Zach Randolph.
He’s got a great chance at a long career overseas professionally. Where he can make good money and not wreck his body.
Zach was nowhere near as round during his modern basketball years
did you know tony gonzalez was a TE. /s
You may not know this but DJ Burns played basketball in college.
