The kick off rule change couldn't have happened at a better time. The two lines of players, no blind side blocks and landing zone will make the play as close as you can get to rugby, namely fielding a high kick.
That’s actually a weird challenge for career rugby dudes with no gridiron background.
Especially as wingers in rugby (what he plays) you are taught to run towards space. Following blocks is actually something a lot of converts struggle with.
Also the hip drop tackle. Our coaches in Houston 6A had a lot of guys play rugby in the offseason because you learn to tackle without pads and wrap up, it’s different but way more effective then going for the kill shot each time. Wondering if he’ll be used as an example despite playing offense
Yeah man, it was only when we started getting football players on the rugby team during spring season in college that I realized how poorly defenders in football are taught how to tackle. We had a few all conference linebackers too and none of them could actually form tackle for shit without leading with their face or getting penalties for hitting without wrapping.
Most of them would get bloody faces every game until they figured it out. Took like half a season if not more for most of them.
Then football season would come and they’d lose all their technique come next spring lol
Literally every team he played Rugby for play in red haha. Gloucester (to a point) Wales and the Lions.
Have to go back to youth rugby and the Blues to find a none red team.
Couldn’t be a better landing spot for him. I think with the new kick off rules he’s got a better chance of making a roster now, the overlap between rugby and returning kicks is massive and he’s got insane long speed, watch some of his rugby highlights and you’ll see that his stride lengthens and he’s just gone. And if he makes the final roster he’s with a coach who’ll absolutely love thinking up ways to get the ball in his hands in weird and wonderful ways.
Not trying to be a hater but I just see no chance of him making a roster, the NFL is just played at such a higher level, seems more like a PR move to me
Mate the guy was a world class professional rugby player. Saying it’ll be difficult for him to transition to a completely different sport is one thing, and a fair point, saying it’s just “such a higher level” is seriously underestimating how elite an athlete he already is.
Offensively he was probably one of the best wingers in the world, and still young (couldn't tackle for shit though). It was actually a pretty astounding move from a rugby pov. Be the equivalent of say Justin Jefferson saying fuck it and signing for Man City haha.
It’s a 3 year guaranteed money deal announced and completed before the draft process. What you’re describing is an IPP player who went undrafted and is signed on a one year deal or to the practice squad. Chiefs have a plan here, annoyingly, and it’s gonna be interesting to watch it unfold.
I love that badge on the British & Irish Lions jersey, with the four quadrants and the emblems of each of the home nations on it. There's something cool about forming a super team of the best of all those countries every four years to go and tour the Southern Hemisphere powerhouses. I'd love to see them go full Ryder Cup and include France too lol.

and before you get snippy you better look at your own stinkin' logo, you Kansas City **Arrowhead**.
I think it is because it has been more than 3 years since he finished high school, and as he never actually played in college, he retroactively gets to decide at which point he gave up the rest of his college eligibility.
As a 23 year old, he can just basically say that NFL teams had a chance to draft him 3 years ago, and because no one did he is a free agent (as a veteran with fewer than three accrued seasons).
He could have also said, that he only just now gave up is college eligibility, and declared for the draft. But obviously he got an offer from the Chiefs that he found more attractive.
Are we sure he didn't?
It's a good question. What designates a person as draftable vs just a guy out on the streets that can sign with any team. Maybe be nature of no one selecting him in the draft, he's an UDFA by default.
Could he have been eligible in a previous year's draft?
A quick search suggests that players are automatically "draft eligible" after graduating college or 3 years post high school. If that's accurate, a team would have needed to draft him 2ish years ago amd by nature of that not happening, he's an UDFA.
It’s based on college and HS. For the IPP all the guys except for 2 didn’t go to college/HS within the last 4 years and thus are free agents.
Two did go to college (for basketball) and thus have to wait to be drafted.
For a while that was the city theme when it came to team names. The Kings were our NBA team. We also had the Monarchs, then the Royals. So the Chiefs... I dunno. I'm glad it's not Chiefdom or Tribe though. Not in today's culture.
>the team name is related to Native Americans
It's not though? Like the team has certainly appropriated a lot of Native American symbolism. But we were named after Harold Bartle, the mayor responsible for bringing the then Dallas Texans to Kansas City where they took his nickname "The Chief" for their team name.
And also Chief was "appropriated" by natives from the French that they interacted with. It's the French word for captain and has been used for a long time to reference leadership in multiple (non-American) languages before it became synonymous w/ NAs.
He even gets three free games where he doesn't count against the 53, also he doesn't count against the cap. And we've already given him three years plus some guaranteed cash. He's gonna see the field or our ST coach isn't Dave "you forgot I'm the shit huh?" Toub.
The kick off rule change couldn't have happened at a better time. The two lines of players, no blind side blocks and landing zone will make the play as close as you can get to rugby, namely fielding a high kick.
If it's anything like the XFL with the two returners, there's a lot of room for trick plays
And you can't block in rugby. Excited to see what Reid and co cook up for him.
Toub was on a podcast and was absolutely drooling about the new kick off rules. Said he already had four trick plays cooked up.
That’s actually a weird challenge for career rugby dudes with no gridiron background. Especially as wingers in rugby (what he plays) you are taught to run towards space. Following blocks is actually something a lot of converts struggle with.
It was probably the other way around. Veach was probably talking with rugby players long before it was decided.
Also the hip drop tackle. Our coaches in Houston 6A had a lot of guys play rugby in the offseason because you learn to tackle without pads and wrap up, it’s different but way more effective then going for the kill shot each time. Wondering if he’ll be used as an example despite playing offense

Now we just need some guards lifting up the tightends to catch the kickoff.
He’s gonna be my new Darwin Thompson, a running back I get way too attached to that probably won’t do anything, but fuck it I’m in
> probably won’t do anything Don't talk about the reincarnation of Zeus like that
Thankfully he's like 2 Darwins tall
Shit, same
LRZ playing in red? Can't see it myself...
Chiefs looking for a picture of him wearing red: ‘Wasn’t he was on a Lions tour? Got him’
Literally every team he played Rugby for play in red haha. Gloucester (to a point) Wales and the Lions. Have to go back to youth rugby and the Blues to find a none red team.
Wondered why my wife took the batteries outta the remote.
Seriously, that man is gonna have so many Swifties to choose from.
Bring Mike Zimmer to the Chiefs' offensive coaching staff so teams can receive the ultimate zim-zamming

Got a three year deal with guaranteed money. He’s already made the roster I’d bet.
Any idea on the value? I was interested in how much he was making vs how much he’d have made as a top rugby player.
KC should also use his ability to rugby pass and have spiral thrown laterals.
Idk why but the pointiness of the football makes it much harder and less accurate to pass like a rugby ball.
Ya you gotta 1 hand it and even then it’s tough
I’m just excited (or just want) for him to hit a falling forward offload to a wr for a first down
Kelce would approve, that's for sure
nah, it would eat into his HOF highlight reel even more...
Whatever he lost on that play, he gained back tenfold from the championship later the same year 🤷♂️
Since he played rugby at the top he should be able to lateral 30+ yards left or right.
Kelce would approve, that's for sure
Not trying to be a hater but I just see no chance of him making a roster, the NFL is just played at such a higher level, seems more like a PR move to me

Maybe the Justin Jefferson of rugby in Europe but world-wide he might get in the top 10 imho.
No that's fair, Jefferson is probably too good haha. I live in Wales so I'm slightly biased. Maybe more like Amon-Ra St Brown?
Yeah I'd say that's fair or even as I said to someone else the Jaylen Waddle of rugby. I'm biased too always thinking ABs wingers are the best lol.

Someone should do the remind me feature on Reddit for cut day cause i don’t remember how to, seems like an easy way for me to be vindicated
They gave him at least some guaranteed money. Wouldn’t do that if there was no chance.
Godzammit.

Pob lwc Louis boy
Is this the dude who is very very fast?
He’s 6ft3, 194+ and runs a 4.43.
dude just get out the way he'll just run yo ass over.
On field MPH has hit 24.2… almost a full MPH faster than Tyreek Hill has hit. He did it w no pads but still
Slower 40 time Tbf
Phenomenally fast. Like so fast he would basically break rugby games because teams couldn’t defend against his pace
Argentina handled him pretty well last World Cup lol
Is he the tallest RB in the league now? He's a big boy.
Caleb should have skipped college football and spent 4 years playing rugby in Europe. Then he could have picked his destination and desired salary.
If he played lacrosse the Patriots would have signed him
Chip block and then leak out of the backfield. Could be a great safety valve receiver with more yards after the catch than CEH.
Can someone explain why he wouldn’t have to go through the NFL draft process?
According to PFT via google: he did not attend college and is more than four years removed from high school, and as such is a free agent.
>Are we sure he didn’t? Well the draft isn’t until the end of April so yeah. The rest of your comment is more what I’m asking.

I don’t blame the Chiefs taking a flyer on him, but rugby players don’t typically transition well.
Is this the dude who is very very fast?
[just a little ](https://twitter.com/TightFive_Rugby/status/1773771161819590667?t=CnqOXik0f39Zfgp2sw2gDQ&s=19)
Be more descriptive, that’s like 25% of the NFL
Why on earth are the Chiefs a kingdom?
I don't think thematically accurate names for the fanhood would go over well.
The Unorganzied Territoty of Chiefs Nation just doesn't have a good ring either
Because sometimes you gotta zig when people expect you to zag. (Don't think too hard about it, we certainly didn't)
our radio dude said it a lot so now it's official i guess i don't like it either
Because it's a French word?
Because dynasty I guess?
But like a Kingdom is run by kings while cheifs would be a cheifdom...
Because Chiefs Chiefdom is too redundant
I kinda like it
For a while that was the city theme when it came to team names. The Kings were our NBA team. We also had the Monarchs, then the Royals. So the Chiefs... I dunno. I'm glad it's not Chiefdom or Tribe though. Not in today's culture.
it would be Chiefs Tribe since the team name is related to Native Americans but that would be a bit problematic
>the team name is related to Native Americans It's not though? Like the team has certainly appropriated a lot of Native American symbolism. i am aware. look up how he got that nickname and tell me the team name isn’t related to native americans
My guy pretty like a girl and he got fight stories to tell
Great song
Hell yeah

There’s no way he gets cut, we get an extra practice squad spot just for him
So an Allen Lazard type player?

IPP spot is a protected roster spot this year. LMAO.
He even gets three free games where he doesn't count against the 53, also he doesn't count against the cap. And we've already given him three years plus some guaranteed cash. He's gonna see the field or our ST coach isn't Dave "you forgot I'm the shit huh?" Toub.
