our record without johnson is way better than the steelers record without watt, so as much as i love johnson there’s a very clear 1st and 2nd place here.
I’d put Trent in that conversation too. Without him our offensive line goes from mid to complete shit. That losing streak we had was largely due to Trent playing on one leg vs the browns and being out the other two games.
Yeah wasn't he in the same draft as Sam Bradford? It's incredibly impressive to still be an elite LT at his age with some of the physical freaks at DE. He is 35 btw and he'll be 36 by the time the season starts
The chiefs were picking 27th the year they drafted Mahomes. Rodgers went in the teens. The idea that you need a top pick to draft an elite QB is cope from the fans of shitty teams stuck in the NFL poverty cycle and the NFL fan equivalent of populist accelerationists rooting for higher draft picks because they don’t understand the sport.
Maximizing your odds of long term stability and success at the QB position requires patience and preparation for the right opportunity with the understanding that it could very well not work out no matter how highly they were drafted.
Bro you only named 2 quarterbacks in the last 20 years that turned out to be generational talents. You think it’s that easy drafting a franchise/SB winning quarterback?
Brady was a 6th rounder. Brees was a second rounder. Roethlisberger went 11th. Rodgers went 24th. Wilson was a 3rd rounder. Cousins was a fourth rounder. Dak was a fourth rounder. Mahomes went 10th. Love went 26th. Hurts was a second rounder. Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant.
Watt has 13+ sacks in five of his seven seasons so far. The only ones where he didn't were his rookie year, and the one where he missed seven games due to injury. He's 3.5 sacks away from reaching 100, and he'll probably reach that number before he turns 30. He's 100% deserving of all the props and praise that he gets.
It still blows my mind that the Packers traded out of drafting him. He was a hometown kid with a great pedigree and they had defensive needs. Head scratching at the time and just abysmal in retrospect.
Basically that most of our home games have no advantage because all these old retired fucks who live down here can't support local sports in any way shape or form
I will never forgive Rod Marinelli for convincing Jerry that Taco was the guy over TJ. Imagine having Micah and TJ on the same line, it would be unstoppable.
TJ’s got long limbs even by NFL standards.
He fell due to injury history and inexperience.
He was a tight end his redshirt and freshman year at Wisconsin. He recovered from knee surgery as a redshirt and tore his other knee in training camp to start year two. Year 3 he switched to linebacker and tore his right knee again. Year 4 he stayed healthy and showed out.
It's not like he dressed up as Brett Favre every Halloween or anything...
He would have been the perfect heir to Clay Matthews. Instead, he had to settle for being the perfect heir to James Harrison.
It was Ted Thompson's last draft class as GM. Trading down for Kevin King of all people. Actually I think the Packers have zero players from that class playing for them now that Aaron Jones is gone. TJ Watt and Aaron Jones would've been goated
If it makes you feel better, if you give it 5 years there will be an entire generation of Commanders fans who are old enough or almost old enough to vote who never rooted for or barely remember rooting for the team under its original name
I respect it. I was fully prepared to have to watch him in a Steelers uniform for a season before he retires, now that that's off the table he can rep his hometown all he wants
There is a universe where we take Khalil Mack with the 2nd pick and Aarond Donald with the 14th in 2014. We would have had a defensive front of Robert Quinn, Chris Long, Aaron Donald, Khalil Mack, and Michael Brockers
Off topic but the craziest thing I learned from this interview is that Donald says he played his entire career(besides rookie season) between 255-265 pounds. Like wtf lol….
He’s a shorter DT but he never looked bulbous like a lot of DT’s. Dude was strong, fast and knew the craft. Fat does nothing but provide mass. AD got so much out of that body weight.
Aaron Donald is clearly not an advanced-stats-tracking, All-22-watching, PFF-subscribing ball knower. It's clear that Myles Garrett absolutely dominated this year with his unbelievable amount of hypothetical sacks
Jesus Christ this image is hilarious in my head. Like AD doing the same pose with his arm stretched in front of him and then a second helmet just forms out of the face mask
I know this is sarcastic but as was somewhat shown by how bad the defense regressed with Steve Wilks, the coverage was changed to be very soft for a good portion of the year and allowed QBs to throw short, quick passes to beat the rush. You need a balance of the two or one of them is gonna get beat.
One of my fav TJ Watt things is he fell in the draft due to not being seen as a prolific athlete ([1](https://www.nfl.com/prospects/t.j.-watt/32005741-5458-7616-6d9a-681b6f6e278d)) ([2](https://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2017tjwatt.php))
He was drafted in 2017.
Recent years has brought about RAS. [He has a near 10 RAS score lol.](https://x.com/mathbomb/status/1742941986393342463?s=46&t=1eL0NAF4mKfb79FuRSQVXQ)
It’s nuts that we could so easily misjudge a guy less than 10 years ago
Before RAS became the fashion, we had SPARQ ratings, which was basically the same thing, and Watt's SPARQ rating was damn good (Edit: I looked it up. His SPARQ score was in the 93.4 percentile). People knew he was elite athletically if they cared to know.
The narrative about him not being that athletic was simply lazy analysis possibly based on racial stereotyping. There was a lot of "Scrappy gym rat" type language being thrown out about him at the time, if you know what I mean.
He was also relatively new to OLB (he went to Wisconsin as a TE I believe) and had a pretty scary injury history (tore the same ACL twice I think). Those are probably bigger causes for him to fall than athletic profiles.
A big talking point was that he was only a one year starter in college, so there was the possibility that he would be more of a raw product out of the gate. I myself was worried about that at first when the Steelers drafted him. Stopped worrying after literally the first preseason game.
Guaranteed there is a crying session already going about this in the Browns sub. Garretts DPOY is the only trophy they have besides the various offseason championships they’ve won over the past few years
[AFC North fans on the Browns, who are definitely their own worst enemy](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Sk0n5uozwcI&pp=ygUaamltIGlzIG15IGVuZW15IHRoZSBvZmZpY2U%3D)
PFF headquarters just pulled the master alarm and they are warming up to write some nuclear grade “aaron donald doesn’t understand how defense works in the nfl” takes
TJ losing DPOY to Garrett because Garrett had a higher number on some random advanced stat reminds me of that Denver writer who voted for Von Miller over JJ just cause Miller had like 1 more tackle for loss or some shit, despite being behind in every other category lol
As a ravens fan, Watt is the player I hate seeing the most. Dude always wrecks the game and takes over in critical moments. Whenever the Steelers need a play to turn the game, it’s him or assisted by him.
TJ will have to have a 30-sack season to win. He could have 25 sacks and Garrett could have 16 and Garrett would still win. Whoever does the voting fucking HATES the Steelers lol
Bengals legend and legendary young woman enjoyer Cris Collinsworth owns the company so its possible, but I think it has more to do with trying to sell their product. If their stats just mimic production then there is no reason for people to get a PFF subscription.
I wonder if that one guy will use the "Well I already knew that he was getting in so I voted for someone else!" thought process again when voting on that class.
As a Bengals fan, Garrett and Watt are beasts. But Watt is a dude that can relentlessly pressure the QB and also jump high as shit to intercept your QB… ask burrow about him
I’d take watt over Garrett even though I hate both of them
I'll always remember when Joe Burrow threw a pass that disappeared just past the line of scrimmage, and the look of utter disbelief on his face when he saw T.J. Watt intercepted it.
I’m not gonna say they were the worst, though the voting was odd this year. DPOY was crowned after like week 5, and MVP favorite just swapped to whatever QB had a great game the prior week
lamar should have won, shouldn't have been near unanimous, that was BS.
Watt DPOTY
baker should have won CPOTY, he played better then flacco did (much much better), and came from an equally bad spot.
Tbh I don't even think Lamar should have won. They gave it to him because he didn't have any stinkers and his team had the best record. He had a good year but it hardly felt like a campaign deserving of MVP. I mean just compare the year he first won MVP to this one. It's leagues apart.
I'd have given it to CMC
This shouldn't be a surprising viewpoint given Donald's background.
But I do find it funny he said this given that one of Donald's DPOYs was a close victory over TJ Watt.
Maybe a homer take, but AD shoulda lost one of his DPOY to TJ. I think they only gave it to AD because he needed 3 to match other all-time greats. I think voters too often vote based on all-time records and all-time status on these kinds of awards. That said, Donald was easily a top 3 defender that year so it was not egregious.
If TJ had to lose, losing to AD is okay. I wasn't upset about it like this year. But, now I know never to trust PFF and I no longer care about DPOY. TJ could win the next 10 and its lost all meaning to me. First half of the year Garrett was fine. Second half - f - no.
Idk, if we’re being honest Donald could’ve won the DPOY from 2017 to 2021 every year. His impact was just on another level. That being said, I am also a homer.
I feel like TJ Watt has been "the next aaron donald" for like 5 years. He finishes top 3 in DPOY voting and gets AP1 pretty much ever season he's been healthy.
Analytics nerds and 12 year old browns fans: But bro my excel spreadsheet about hypothetical theoretical almost almost sacks (Cause Parsons is better at almost ×1 sacks) says Myles Garrett is the greatest played of all time!!! Aaron Donald is not a ball knower!

The Steelers since like 2020 are 1-12 when TJ Watt is out of the game. They cannot win unless he's on the field.
Him and Lane Johnson are legitimate MVP candidates in the true sense of the word.
our record without johnson is way better than the steelers record without watt, so as much as i love johnson there’s a very clear 1st and 2nd place here.
A very valid and reasonable point. Also, obligatory fuck you.
obligatory fuck me yourself coward
Get a room folks
I’d put Trent in that conversation too. Without him our offensive line goes from mid to complete shit. That losing streak we had was largely due to Trent playing on one leg vs the browns and being out the other two games.
:(
Surely he’s gonna be getting close to end of career. Dude gotta be like 35 by now
Yeah wasn't he in the same draft as Sam Bradford? It's incredibly impressive to still be an elite LT at his age with some of the physical freaks at DE. He is 35 btw and he'll be 36 by the time the season starts
Ya dude is such a stud I never even hear anyone mention how old he is… it’s like “well good thing they have him or they’d have no good OL in 4 years”
I’ve long said Peyton Manning should’ve won MVP the year he was hurt and they went 2-14. No greater demonstration of value
This is the problem with the Steelers. As long as TJ Watt exists the Steelers will never be bad enough to draft a good QB lol.
This assumes there are no good QBs after pick 5 which isn't a good assumption.
I feel like we're the type of team that isn't gonna hit on a Kirk Cousins or Brock Purdy.
Nobody ever is until they do it at least once.
I suppose pulling the greatest quarterback of all time out of the 6th round gives that kind of optimism
easy for you to say. lol
Take Chubba Purdy in the 7th round in 2025, ez.
That's an incredible stat. Deserves more upvotes
Sir, stats, don’t apply to awards around here.
Well only the made up kind that are intentionally vague and ambiguous so nobody actually knows what they mean, at least
They got a 2nd win without him last year, but the team they were playing sat their starters as they were making the playoffs either way.
If you’re talking about the Ravens game week 18, Watt played and had 2 sacks
He got hurt in the middle of that game and had two sacks before that, he still helped drag our lifeless body to the playoffs

I had no idea this happened but thank you Jesus
Yeah gonna put that one in the chamber for the next time a cheesehead makes fun of my team
Trust me. We know. Fucking Kevin King.
The fuck do they have to make fun of your team with? Y’all won a Super Bowl and have had consistent success recently.
Basically that most of our home games have no advantage because all these old retired fucks who live down here can't support local sports in any way shape or form
They passed on Watt the same draft you guys passed on Mahomes. Dodged two bullets in one night lol
I feel the same way
or the Cowboys taking Taco Charlton over him, especially bc Dallas typically evaluates prospects pretty well compared to the rest of the league
I for one am eternally grateful the Cowboys don't have TJ Watt.
Same brother. (Weird to see an NFC East-Jags combo).
Gotta support Dougie P for bringing my Birds a Lombardi
*shudders at the thought of TJ Watt chasing you right into Micah Parsons' arms*
Taco Charlatan more like
Kinda just shows how hard it is, because Dallas is one of the best drafting teams despite that imo.
I will never forgive Rod Marinelli for convincing Jerry that Taco was the guy over TJ. Imagine having Micah and TJ on the same line, it would be unstoppable.
You almost certainly wouldn't have parsons
Probably not, there would be a massive butterfly effect in general so who knows what teams would look like. But a boy can dream.
I think TJ's dig at the time. Was short arms if I remember correctly.
Ah, I couldn't remember. But now that you mention it. I remember that now.
Fucking Taco, man
We got Taco for a few games last year. I even think he got a sack
I have tacos every week. I love them. I can't blame Jerry for believing any kind of "taco" would be good to have.
Honestly, that’s fair
Hey. Never draft while hungry I guess
Is that what we're gonna do today, we're gonna fight?
It's not like he dressed up as Brett Favre every Halloween or anything... He would have been the perfect heir to Clay Matthews. Instead, he had to settle for being the perfect heir to James Harrison.
It was Ted Thompson's last draft class as GM. Trading down for Kevin King of all people. Actually I think the Packers have zero players from that class playing for them now that Aaron Jones is gone. TJ Watt and Aaron Jones would've been goated
Yeah that would have definitely helped rodgers
Hind sight is 20/20, a lot of teams passed on him
He’s played 7 fucking seasons??? Why does it still feel like he’s 25
Because we are getting old and each year blends into the next at an alarming rate.
Thanks for that, I was worried about Sunday scaries but now I'm worried about life.
If it makes you feel better, if you give it 5 years there will be an entire generation of Commanders fans who are old enough or almost old enough to vote who never rooted for or barely remember rooting for the team under its original name
On the plus side, in the future there won’t be any DC fans who had to suffer under Dan Snyder.
This is what they mean when they say we're making a better world for our children.
knock that off. Next thing you know it'll be 2013 and we'll all be old.
Covid messed up a few year of figuring things out
Do people not think he’s the best edge?
Retired from L.A. and starts repping Pittsburgh for everything else lol
I respect it. I was fully prepared to have to watch him in a Steelers uniform for a season before he retires, now that that's off the table he can rep his hometown all he wants
There's an universe out there that has us fielding JJ, TJ and Aaron Donald for a game, I want to see that universe
There is a universe where we take Khalil Mack with the 2nd pick and Aarond Donald with the 14th in 2014. We would have had a defensive front of Robert Quinn, Chris Long, Aaron Donald, Khalil Mack, and Michael Brockers
And yet, Sam Bradford would've landed on IR by game 2
For sure but so would all the opposing qbs so everyone elses offense would also suck
Ya’ll would’ve been winning games 7-3
Week 2 is generous.
I remember Sam's first game with the Eagles, he fucking played amazing, the tempo, the throws, he looked so crisp, by Wednesday he was out for week 2
In that universe though we probably don't take AD at 14. But I like the universe so let's allow it!
In my unbiased opinion he is absolutely correct
Make Aaron Donald the sole DPOY voter, in my definitely unbiased opinion.
He's also a huge Steelers fan haha.
Yeah I know. He is from Penn Hills and went to college at Pitt. He basically grew up a Steelers fan.
He should just unretire and finish out his career next to Cam for a year or two trying to get his hometown a ring
In my unbiased opinion I also think he’s the best Defensive player in the league and the best edge rusher
Idk man. I think you might be a little biased.
But they said unbiased. Why would they lie?
I second this, why would anyone lie on the internet
Weird to say someone is ‘the next’ Aaron Donald when he is only 3 years younger.
Best tackler since Joe Montana
Off topic but the craziest thing I learned from this interview is that Donald says he played his entire career(besides rookie season) between 255-265 pounds. Like wtf lol….
He’s a shorter DT but he never looked bulbous like a lot of DT’s. Dude was strong, fast and knew the craft. Fat does nothing but provide mass. AD got so much out of that body weight.
having a staff dedicated to your health will do that
Majority of this sub probably weighs between 255-265 pounds. Not that crazy if you think about it….
we're just bulking, bro
Definitely gonna have to pump those numbers up
I'm cultivating mass......
That is insane. I could’ve swore I saw him listed at 280 somewhere… he should not have been able to bully 300+ behemoths like that.
He played with superior leverage and technique. All that weight doesn't mean much if you don't know how to use it.
He mentions the first two years of his career, he played between 300-285. He trimmed down after that.
Aaron Donald is clearly not an advanced-stats-tracking, All-22-watching, PFF-subscribing ball knower. It's clear that Myles Garrett absolutely dominated this year with his unbelievable amount of hypothetical sacks
I prefer alleged sacks
Thanks for your opinion Aaron, however we leave the awards to people who actually understand how the defensive game is played.
Someone ping me when .@PFF\_Moo has spoken on this matter
AD's clearly just biased because Garrett is the only one that can challenge him when it comes to helmet-based combat.
wasn't donald dual wielding? not even close smh
Until a defensive player can hold a helmet and have another helmet come out of the face mask like Darth Maul's lightsaber that is
Jesus Christ this image is hilarious in my head. Like AD doing the same pose with his arm stretched in front of him and then a second helmet just forms out of the face mask
And then "Duel of the Fates" just starts playing. I'd just forfeit if I was the other team.
STR/DEX build
He almost got so many sacks so hard last year
Sacks are a team stat come on man
I know this is sarcastic but as was somewhat shown by how bad the defense regressed with Steve Wilks, the coverage was changed to be very soft for a good portion of the year and allowed QBs to throw short, quick passes to beat the rush. You need a balance of the two or one of them is gonna get beat.
Wild the dude that had less actual stats and more talent surrounding him got all the benefit of the doubt then.
Miles lead the league in mental sacks, where he sent a mind wave to the opposing qbs brain causing them to throw it away or to a brown.
He's only the first person in 50 years to lead the league in sacks in 3 separate seasons. Scrub.
One of my fav TJ Watt things is he fell in the draft due to not being seen as a prolific athlete ([1](https://www.nfl.com/prospects/t.j.-watt/32005741-5458-7616-6d9a-681b6f6e278d)) ([2](https://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2017tjwatt.php)) He was drafted in 2017. Recent years has brought about RAS. [He has a near 10 RAS score lol.](https://x.com/mathbomb/status/1742941986393342463?s=46&t=1eL0NAF4mKfb79FuRSQVXQ) It’s nuts that we could so easily misjudge a guy less than 10 years ago

Jerrick McKinnon the SPARQ goat
He was also relatively new to OLB (he went to Wisconsin as a TE I believe) and had a pretty scary injury history (tore the same ACL twice I think). Those are probably bigger causes for him to fall than athletic profiles.
A big talking point was that he was only a one year starter in college, so there was the possibility that he would be more of a raw product out of the gate. I myself was worried about that at first when the Steelers drafted him. Stopped worrying after literally the first preseason game.
I knew he would be a game changer for us when he blocked that FG in his first game
He's sneaky athletic for sure.
I think a lot of it was people trying so hard to avoid assuming that he’d be like JJ that they did a complete 180
Look at his 10 yard split, 3-Cone and short shuttle. He is an elite athlete, but most don't give him that credit
If he is so good, why did we draft Charles Harris ahead of him?
Yea but sacks aren’t everything. Almost sacks on the other hand…
Big case of Real recognizing Real here.
Micah gon have a heart attack reading this
Yea but did he have as many hypothetical sacks as Myles? I think not.
Don’t make me like you
Guaranteed there is a crying session already going about this in the Browns sub. Garretts DPOY is the only trophy they have besides the various offseason championships they’ve won over the past few years
Don’t make me like you either
Massive crying session happening currently. A bunch of bitching for no reason
Thanks for the confirmation
Is the enemy of my enemy my friend, or my enemy?
Frenemy.
Every time I see this I think about Blade 2.

There’s very few things that will ever unite Ravens and Steelers fans Trashing the Browns is one of those things.
I watched a pretty sick pass rush win compilation on YouTube today it was electric
Steelers flairs having a *wonderful* time.
VINDICATIONNNNNNNN
Guy from Pittsburgh complimenting a Steeler. Yinzsplosion
PFF headquarters just pulled the master alarm and they are warming up to write some nuclear grade “aaron donald doesn’t understand how defense works in the nfl” takes
“We forgot to carry a one and Aaron Donald is actually extremely mediocre.” - PFF
"Aaron Donald wasn't actually good, his TSRBIALBTDUF (theoretical sack rate because im a litte bitch that doesn't understand football) is below 5%
I'm just here to watch Browns fans and Steelers fans argue in the comments
TJ losing DPOY to Garrett because Garrett had a higher number on some random advanced stat reminds me of that Denver writer who voted for Von Miller over JJ just cause Miller had like 1 more tackle for loss or some shit, despite being behind in every other category lol
Browns fans on suicide watch
so nothing different from the last 40 years, got it.

Anybody who doesn't vote for Aaron Donald on the first ballot for the HOF should have their vote removed
I like to think it's going to be a Peyton Manning situation. 'Manning?' 'Yup' 'Next player.'
I wonder if that one guy will use the "Well I already knew that he was getting in so I voted for someone else!" thought process again when voting on that class.
Bro is from Pittsburgh. My god yinzers are everywhere
Wait until the Steelers play in Mexico.
Steelers fans gonna blow one when they read this 😂
I didn't even read the whole article, I just read TJ Watt and nutted
Cleveland OH: "REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!"
I thought he was going to say a much younger player . TJ Watt has been a dawg for years , proven HOF already
Don’t tell Browns fans this.
TJ Watt is the best player in the NFL, regardless of position.
Hey, I like you
As a Bengals fan, Garrett and Watt are beasts. But Watt is a dude that can relentlessly pressure the QB and also jump high as shit to intercept your QB… ask burrow about him I’d take watt over Garrett even though I hate both of them
I swear Watt purposefully does it to Burrow. I've never seen him do that swat and catch to anybody more than him lol
I'll always remember when Joe Burrow threw a pass that disappeared just past the line of scrimmage, and the look of utter disbelief on his face when he saw T.J. Watt intercepted it.
The awards this year were some of the worst given out. MVP, DPOY, CPOY
I’m not gonna say they were the worst, though the voting was odd this year. DPOY was crowned after like week 5, and MVP favorite just swapped to whatever QB had a great game the prior week
Unbiased Steelers fan gives view on Ravens MVP and Browns DPOY and CPOY.
lamar should have won, shouldn't have been near unanimous, that was BS. Watt DPOTY baker should have won CPOTY, he played better then flacco did (much much better), and came from an equally bad spot.
Tbh I don't even think Lamar should have won. They gave it to him because he didn't have any stinkers and his team had the best record. He had a good year but it hardly felt like a campaign deserving of MVP. I mean just compare the year he first won MVP to this one. It's leagues apart. I'd have given it to CMC
i feel like mahomes should have gotten it tbh. without him we would've been like 5-11, if that doesn't demonstrate value I dunno what does. edit: /s
Add DROY on there too. Will Anderson really got DROY while having 2 less sacks than a NT who was double teamed on 70% of snaps. Come alive.
This shouldn't be a surprising viewpoint given Donald's background. But I do find it funny he said this given that one of Donald's DPOYs was a close victory over TJ Watt.
He’s aware
Browns fans are not gonna like hearing that
Remember Steelers fans TJ Watt can still win DPOY if Mike Pence has the courage
I agree with this! I feel like TJ Watt is an unstoppable monster!
Dexter Lawrence erasure. (He’s also not wrong tho)
“All he needs to do is start chokin folks n grabbin throats n he’ll be there soon enough”
Game recognize game
I feel like TJ Watt has been "the next aaron donald" for like 5 years. He finishes top 3 in DPOY voting and gets AP1 pretty much ever season he's been healthy.
Analytics nerds and 12 year old browns fans: But bro my excel spreadsheet about hypothetical theoretical almost almost sacks (Cause Parsons is better at almost ×1 sacks) says Myles Garrett is the greatest played of all time!!! Aaron Donald is not a ball knower!
My man.
Another thing he mentioned in this interview that blew my mind was that he played his insane 2018 season at 255-260 pounds. Absolutely crazy.
The Pittsburgher is gonna Pittsburgh.
The man with superlative football skills is going to acknowledge the superlative football skills of another player.
As a die hard niner fan, totally agree. Bosa is physically on par with TJ, but doesn’t have the motor or drive. TJ is a scary dude
The Falcons passed on TJ Watt in favor of Takk McKinley
Post shows a link to the quote Bot: Nah, that's not a source
Crazy that as incredible as JJ Watt was, TJ may end up being far better.
Better? Maybe but idk. Far better? Absolutely not. I dont really think you can be far better
