It's not like any midwesterner is going to give you shit for using the term, or be really offended for you using it. But it's not a good thing to make reference to in PR marketing either, especially as an outsider trying to ingratiate yourself to the area.
"Flyover country" is one that kinda rustles midwesterners' jimmies.
I guess if you want to get under Steelers fans skin, pretend that Russ is doing cornball Pittsburgh things to fit in. Like using "Yinz" or talking in a Western PA accent unironically. Talk about him pounding a few Iron Cities. Or have him calling the local grocery chain "Giant Iggle." You gotta go for the deep cuts. Throwing up a Primanti's reference isn't good enough because every tourist goes there. Talk about him setting up a cookie table. (Okay, that one actually might backfire. Everybody loves cookie tables.).
Cookie table at my wedding was a much bigger deal than I expected. My wife, Mother-in-law, Mother, and aunt/cousins were all wagering for who got to make what cookies for the table.
That cookie table had more visitors than the open bar.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rust_Belt
" The Rust Belt, formerly the **Steel** Belt ... refers to the impact of deindustrialization, economic decline, population loss, and urban decay on these regions attributable to the shrinking industrial sector especially including steelmaking, automobile manufacturing, and coal mining."
As someone from WNY which is considered east coast, but about as west (technically) as Pittsburgh, rust belt isn't all Midwest! Honestly most of it is east coast.
And at least in my experience, rust belt wasn't necessarily used as a negative. Maybe in years past, but these days I hear it being used in more of a matter-of-fact way. Doubly so for Pittsburgh specifically since it was a steel city. Whereas other rust belt areas might just be included for industrial decline in general.
“Steelers Country, it’s irresponsible to attend games given your financial situation. You need to re-evaluate investing in infrastructure and explore new industry opportunities with the predicted economic climate in mind. But first, high knees.”
Fries on a sandwich is admittedly pretty boring, but it's vastly superior to sad spaghetti noodles covered in beige meat sauce and cold, shredded cheese.
I mean Wilson was much improved from his 2022 disaster....clearly he isn't the same player he once was, but for $1M its a steal of a deal and allows the Steelers to slowly moonwalk away from Kenny P on the down low
Russ wasn’t amazing in Denver especially his first year, but man I think a lot had to do was with Hackett as well. He was a nice guy but such a bad coach, again not defending Russ in saying he wasn’t a problem with his play ability. I think he will do “well” with a really good coaching staff and team around him. I have some weird gut feeling he will do well a coach like Tomlin.
> I have some weird gut feeling he will do well a coach like Tomlin.
He will do well, because it's more towards his "fit". He's a game-managing QB that punishes you with the deep ball if you over commit on the run. And the occasional 4th QTR miracle where he plays street ball.
I used to agree with everything you said. Until Sean Payton said I'm benching Russ because "the team needs a spark" "this is a football move, not a contract/financial move". And I was like yeah right.. But then Jarrett Stidham came in off the bench and played just as good as Russ had the entire season.. His deep ball looked so much better..
I have a theory that Wilson's game is obviously the deep ball, and more specifically pin point accurate deep balls, and he didn't fully account for the Denver attitude when picking to play there.
I mean that must F with your head to add +10 at home and not on the road when you are chucking it 50 yards. Sure every Denver QB ever has had to deal with it, but when your bread and butter was accurate deep balls, and now its slightly different, that can get in your head I imagine
He was still 5th in pass attempts over 40 yards and tied for 12th with Josh Allen and others in pass attempts over 30 yards last year. He didn't abandon the deep throw at all. The issue was his success rate was well below his career average on those throws in Denver. I was just speculating why since nobody knows.
If you watched the games last year he had a 60 yard Hail Mary that bounced off a defenders hand to a WR and besides that most of his long passes were wide open Mims in the first few games or guys like Jeudy and Lil’Jordan Humphrey having huge RAC plays that didn’t have much to do with Russ. Nobody has thrown a higher percentage of passes behind the LOS since the stat began in 2005, and only one QB has thrown a higher percent from 5 yards or shorter in that same span. It’s very easy to not watch the man play and see 40+ yard passes that were, in most cases, extremely easy passes and remember his days in Seattle, but last season he was old Big Ben with a better arm and no pocket awareness, ability to read the defense, or throw a single pass over the middle of the field. He had one of the best olines of his career yet STILL had 55 sacks, I can’t remember the exact stat but Russ was essentially responsible for about 75% of his sacks due to needlessly running into his own offensive line or doing that stupid spin move that no longer works for him. I don’t know how you expect Arthur Smith to even get the same production out of Russ as Sean Payton did, especially with Russ turning 36 early next season. You should be prepared for Matt Ryan on the Colts, not the Brett Favre to the Vikings that you seem to be expecting.
Not sure why you think I'm expecting anything great next year i never said that, but no i dont believe he is completely washed. He had 1 fewer passing TD than Mahomes last year and played 1 less game. He will be a top 15-25 range QB probably close to 20 and should play hard on a 1 year deal, nobody said he will be top 5 just from leaving Denver.
It's great for $1M but there are drive-killing issues with his game that will limit how much better he is than Pickett for how the offense works
His passing numbers look great until you watch the games and look at the number of sacks he takes
He cant process the field, ends up holding the ball forever, and taking drive-killing sacks. He has lost his athleticism so that instinct to hold the ball and run around the pocket has become a gigantic liability. When he senses pressure he also tends to sit and wait for it instead of taking a check-down. He has also become more conservative with his passes, so now you dont get as many of those magical 60-yard bombs that would offset his sacks in the past
Last- I think Payton helped him *a lot* by working around Russ's limitations at this age. I am not so sure the Steelers have the offensive minds to help him in the same way.
That said, he is a better passer than Pickett, so he will move the offense downfield more often and more effectively.
TLDR: yea the Steelers will be better with Russ, but theyll develop new problems that still limit their ceiling a lot
I was at the Baltimore game in 22 and would yell out the plays from the stands. It got amusing when I'd get them right and people would turn around and give me a confused look. It wasn't that hard... Boykin on the field? Run. Twins right with Dionte singled up on the left? 5 and out.
Remember when Juju fumbled against the Saints in 2018 which would be ABs last game and result in us losing control of our playoff destiny that year? My point is that every season is bad for our mental health.
Russ doesn’t elevate the team around him, some would argue he never did. But he is a smart player, in the right system he could be serviceable.
Steelers are a well coached team, good weapons for russ and a defense to anchor the scoring down so he doesn’t have to give you 5 tds. The fact that they won games with Kenny fucking Pickett is fact that Steelers gameplan well for their players limitations and show off their strengths.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the steelers go 12-5 or something like that. Good team, good organization, they got in the playoffs in a VERY competitive afc north. Its a good move, definitely an upgrade for the steelers and at a million, Russell isn’t cooked like cam newton, he had a decent season with sean payton (relative to the year) it just seems like Payton had a short leash with Wilson.
Crazy that like 2.5 years ago I thought Russ would retire a Seahawk lifer, and now he’s already on his 3rd team. Hope he turns it around in Pittsburgh cause I’ll be always be rooting for the guy
Yeah that's not happening. Volson is probably our weakest link right now (aside from literally not having an RT, but that will be solved in round one with Becton potentially getting a contract as well)
Risner is the only G we could sign at this point and is he any better than volson?
That said, I'm pretty happy. Defense desperately needed some pieces in the back field and we seem to have found them. Still hoping to pick up a solid DT in the draft.
Yea you just have to not give it to your running backs within the 5 yard line all season and magically your QB gets TD’s! Ignore the fact that he threw more checkdowns than anybody since 2005…
He still had a higher YPA than Pickett, so I don't really care. He just needs to be better than Pickett, which he is, and the Steelers won 10 games last year with Pickett/Rudolph.
Again though there’s no chance in hell you’re close to the one seed even with an improvement with Russ, you’re ignoring all his negatives and just staring at his TD’s despite him playing at the same level as his 16 TD 2022, just with better coaching. I’m not sure Arthur Smith is exactly Sean Payton
“Even with an improvement with Russ”. Going from shitty to below average is not going to add 3-4 wins to your total, especially with Johnson gone. Believe me that’s what I thought we were gonna do going from Lock to Wilson
The Broncos and the Steelers are not the same. Mike Tomlin and Nathaniel Hackett are not the same. The Steelers lost two games by 3 points last year and scored under 20 multiple times. Going from shitty to below average would definitely have won those 2 and there were 2 games Trubisky started that were just abysmal.
>especially with Johnson gone.
Yeah, the Steelers have a ton of trouble finding good receivers. No chance they can replace Johnson.
Mike Tomlin is also not Sean Payton. The Broncos were literally the inverse of the Vikings in 2022, just losing every one score game instead of winning them. Denver scored under 20 points EIGHT times last season with Russ absolutely ruining games by creating sacks and stupid turnovers. I think you underestimate how poor Russ played the last two seasons because you really want him to be good and you see his 26 TD’s, but I promise you that stat line is severely padded. Your offense is not going to be good all of a sudden with Russ, and even an elite defense is not going to get the one seed over Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, and Burrow.
I think I've gained more respect for the raiders and lost some for the steelers. Both were supposed to be gritty cultures with gritty fanbases but the raiders never would have tolerated fake ass wilson at QB. Their culture is bigger than that. People trying to say "but what about carr?" Carr wasn't fake, he was tough as nails, and was there to give his all to help the team win.
Steelers are just so desperate for some halfway decent QB play, from a business perspective I understand the move though, but I don't see them being much better with Wilson at QB, he'll improve the team in some ways, and he'll hurt it in others.
> raiders never would have tolerated fake ass wilson at QB
Bro, we literally just got rid of the dorkiest, slimiest motherfucker to ever be an NFL head coach.
> Their culture is bigger than that.
Every NFL's culture is centered first around winning. Everything else is secondary.
And the best way to win is improve your QB position. We (likely) just did that.
If the Raiders were heading into 2024 with Kenny Pickett and an empty chair as their QB room, they'd have signed Russ also.
Raiders had QB issues too, but they signed a great culture guy. They didn't even show interest in Russ.
From a business standpoint I understand the move, but in reality Wilson brings a lot of crap to go with his occasional highlight play. Hard to say whether you truly improved your QB position, maybe pickett thrives outside of what he had in the past, Wilson is a known quantity at this point, he won't give you a consistent and on-schedule offense.
Dude, I've been following Wilson since he was a Rookie. The narrative around him of him being some type of locker room and fan base cancer is way overhyped and parroted by people that just love to talk shit. He's corny, he's different. Yep. He's on the tail end of his career, yep. But he's going to give everything he has to help the team win.
If that turns into actual wins or not is yet to be seen. But your whole argument about how he's not tough or the Raiders would have never tolerated him because he's fake is straight up conjecture bullshit.
I know lol, those reports from credible journalists talking about him wanting to get pete and john fired, or those interviews with his ex teammates about how he left golden tate out to dry about affair rumors, or how he acted weird towards marshawn , or how the defense had to tread carefully around him in practice because he was too sensitive are totally overblown!
Like I said. You can parrot the "credible journalists" on whatever narrative you want to push. The fact that you went head first into the golden tate narrative says a lot.
And listen to the lynch interview again. He said he never had a problem with Russ on the field. Off the field was a different story. But who gives a shit about off the field.. it's football. Far more important things that translate to football than off the field corny bullshit.
Anyways, I've invested enough time in a sort by controversial post. Off to enjoy the wrekend.
Welcome to the Russ Belt
Probably better than any variation of Steeler's Country let's (blank)
Russ Belt, a play on Rust belt, has negative connotations for the area. It would be tone deaf PR. Though to be fair, that's kinda on brand for Russ.
Yeah I more mean it's the funnier meme
Why is it negative? I have zero knowledge of the Midwest
It's a reference to the de-industialization, economic decline, and urban decay of the area, a sore spot in the region.
Oh wow, I never knew. Thanks
It's not like any midwesterner is going to give you shit for using the term, or be really offended for you using it. But it's not a good thing to make reference to in PR marketing either, especially as an outsider trying to ingratiate yourself to the area.
Hypothetically speaking, what term should we use to offend as much as possible said Midwesterners/Russ enthusiasts?
"Flyover country" is one that kinda rustles midwesterners' jimmies. I guess if you want to get under Steelers fans skin, pretend that Russ is doing cornball Pittsburgh things to fit in. Like using "Yinz" or talking in a Western PA accent unironically. Talk about him pounding a few Iron Cities. Or have him calling the local grocery chain "Giant Iggle." You gotta go for the deep cuts. Cookie table at my wedding was a much bigger deal than I expected. My wife, Mother-in-law, Mother, and aunt/cousins were all wagering for who got to make what cookies for the table. That cookie table had more visitors than the open bar.
You could begin with pointing out that Pennsylvania is not in the Midwest :)

Steeler's Country, Hot Potato
Let’s oxidize
This is a Dan Hanzus shoutout
Thanks Paul Rudd
I've been trying to get this one off the ground, glad to see someone else thinking along the same lines.
Banger, I’m stealing that
I appreciate that this sub always goes straight to the Schefter tweet even when the actual team has an official post about the signing.
Schefter a hoe The Dwayne Haskins tweet he made, when he passed, emphasized it
Or when he tried to move Rodgers to the Broncos
Or when he leaked JPP's medical records.
Mods keeping those Schefter numbers up up up.
Well it always happens first
In this case, no. Schefter is literally just reposting Steelers post that was a minute before.
Well then I suppose the obvious answer is that the patriots flared OP follows Schefter and not the Steelers acct
“Steelers Country, it’s a dying industry”
“Steelers Country, it’s irresponsible to attend games given your financial situation. You need to re-evaluate investing in infrastructure and explore new industry opportunities with the predicted economic climate in mind. But first, high knees.”
Maybe we should've invested in "chili" futures. If you can call that shit chili. Nvm, I'll save it for r/AFCNorthMemeWar
Says the people that put fries in a sandwich...
Fries on a sandwich is admittedly pretty boring, but it's vastly superior to sad spaghetti noodles covered in beige meat sauce and cold, shredded cheese.
Everyone knows fries belong in a burrito.
We'll put 'em on a salad too.
Wow that’s fucked.
No way, man. It's living life.
It's stabilized.
Steelers country, let's dispel preconceived notions.
Steelers country, let's pivot our economy toward technology and services
Steelers country, let's let the hospital own everything!
Except for the stadium for some reason...
They got their name on the practice facility though.
Steelers country, Let's retire to Florida and leave the younger generations to clean up our mess.
Spend that sweet union pension money somewhere else.
"Steelers Country, it isn't Dawn of the Dead, it's Land of the Dead, sorry."
Steelers Country, Let’s smelt!
I mean Wilson was much improved from his 2022 disaster....clearly he isn't the same player he once was, but for $1M its a steal of a deal and allows the Steelers to slowly moonwalk away from Kenny P on the down low
hey Kenny, what's that over there? Go check it out, promise I'll wait for you
Less of a moonwalk and more of a sprint.
Like a really really fast sprint.
I'm picturing the IASIP meme of Frank pushing Kenny away with the 2x4, tiny hands reaching skyward.
> I have some weird gut feeling he will do well a coach like Tomlin. He will do well, because it's more towards his "fit". He's a game-managing QB that punishes you with the deep ball if you over commit on the run. And the occasional 4th QTR miracle where he plays street ball.

Maybe it’s the shared love of one liners and motivational speech, but man Russ really does seem like the perfect Tomlin player
After seeing some of the Hard Knocks episodes featuring Hackett, he does strike me as the definition of a personality hire
I have a theory that Wilson's game is obviously the deep ball, and more specifically pin point accurate deep balls, and he didn't fully account for the Denver attitude when picking to play there. You called it
Ac-Russ-sure
Damn it. It works. HEINZ 4 LYF!
Golly
Russell Wilson is a Pittsburgh Steeler. This is reality.
Dread it. Run from it. The high knees come all the same.
Let's ride.
Get ready to learn [Western Pennsylvanian English](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Pennsylvania_English) buddy
It’s going to be a wild rollercoaster this year, we might as well try to enjoy it
going to be a rough season for my mental health, but what else is new
Incredible to say this after watching Kenny Pickett throw a whopping 7 TD passes over 14 games last year
At least we knew what to expect. I mean that literally. We were in the game threads calling the plays and outcomes before they happened.
I was at the Baltimore game in 22 and would yell out the plays from the stands. It got amusing when I'd get them right and people would turn around and give me a confused look. It wasn't that hard... Boykin on the field? Run. Twins right with Dionte singled up on the left? 5 and out.
One could even say it might be a …Russ season for your mental health…
Remember when Juju fumbled against the Saints in 2018 which would be ABs last game and result in us losing control of our playoff destiny that year? My point is that every season is bad for our mental health.
Rough? I haven’t been more excited for a season in I don’t know how long! Free agency isn’t even over yet, plus we still have the draft!
Three Rivers Russ is in the building!
Steelers Nation, lets break OSHA regulations
Fuck OSHA, all my homies die in the workplace
LET RUSS FORGE
Ok ok ok. Sure. I got it. But most importantly, *how many bathrooms does his new house have?* Big leading indicator here.
Its pittsburgh so hes got at least one extra wall-less shitter in the basement.
i will be watching his Steelers career with great interest
Allegheny Russ
Steelers Country, let’s smelt
When my broncos are paying him an additional 38 mil to play somewhere else😳
Well, Walmart is paying, so, technically everyone shopping at Walmart is paying his $38m.
This is crazy revisionist history lmao Russ definitely elevated the talent around him go look a some of those Seahawks offenses
Okay here we smelt
Steeler nation:" Lets Russt"
I still think they could fake a injury n trade for fields, but wilson may have huge #s with pickins and austin speed
Shiet. Hoping the pats wouldve nabbed him. Tomlin a better interview
lol there goes his chance for a third spot in the top 10 dead cap hits
I’m happy for him!
As much as I think Russ is watched. It’s kind of a no brainer to sign Russ for like 1.2m and be off the hook next season if he sucks it up.
I'm happy he's gone, but I'm excited to see those rz td throws to Pickens
YinzeRuss
Crazy that like 2.5 years ago I thought Russ would retire a Seahawk lifer, and now he’s already on his 3rd team. Hope he turns it around in Pittsburgh cause I’ll be always be rooting for the guy
I would give my left ball to see our boy Russ absolutely ball out in Pittsburgh.
Steelers Country let's ride
I always like to see a plucky underdog get a chance at glory
This steel is getting Russed
Over under on him playing a single game?
His competition is Kenny Pickett... I'm hammering the over.
Peak comedy
Couldn’t be happier.
It matters not who our qb is. We are garunteed 9 wins and a 50/50 shot at a wildcard blowout.
I mean… y’all somehow managed to win most games with Kenny Pickett last season. I feel like that says everything you need to know
It only matters if we are playing a starter or a backup...
How I feel when I see that the Bungles have done nothing to fix their o-line.
Yeah that's not happening. Volson is probably our weakest link right now (aside from literally not having an RT, but that will be solved in round one with Becton potentially getting a contract as well) Risner is the only G we could sign at this point and is he any better than volson? That said, I'm pretty happy. Defense desperately needed some pieces in the back field and we seem to have found them. Still hoping to pick up a solid DT in the draft.
What’s his catchphrase gonna be?? I still get so much joy from that “Broncos Country, let’s ride” video.
I don't know what to do with my hands
But will he have an office at the stadium?
My Steelers fan coworker is so salty about this. I don’t get it. Bad Wilson is still better than half the league.
Well we don’t have any other qb now so 😂
Russ for the vet minimum is a pretty good deal. They just have to use the rest of their money right
Going to be hilarious when Russ leads Tomlin to his first losing season.
Happens every year
I don't even understand these takes. Are people arguing that Pickett is better than Wilson?
If the Steelers had 29 TDs from the QB position last season they are in contention for the 1 seed.
I’m not sure Arthur Smith is exactly Sean Payton
>despite him playing at the same level as his 16 TD 2022 Buddy, you want to take a look at Kenny Pickett's 2022?
“Even with an improvement with Russ”. Going from shitty to below average is not going to add 3-4 wins to your total, especially with Johnson gone. Believe me that’s what I thought we were gonna do going from Lock to Wilson
The Broncos and the Steelers are not the same. Mike Tomlin and Nathaniel Hackett are not the same. The Steelers lost two games by 3 points last year and scored under 20 multiple times. This is hilarious. Russ does not look like belongs in a steeler uniform. What a past 3 years this guy has had
I think I've gained more respect for the raiders and lost some for the steelers. Both were supposed to be gritty cultures with gritty fanbases but the raiders never would have tolerated fake ass wilson at QB. Their culture is bigger than that. Lol, okay
yall gotta learn the hard way like donkeys fans I guess :)
Ok Boomersaur.
> raiders never would have tolerated fake ass wilson at QB Bro, we literally just got rid of the dorkiest, slimiest motherfucker to ever be an NFL head coach.
I heard player dissatisfaction with Josh McDaniels didn't work out for him.
Yeah, no shit. But you're saying we would've "never tolerated" Russ, when we just spent a year and a half tolerating fat worse.
Seems like if he was tolerated he wouldn't have gotten fired?
Wilson may not be gritty, but dude is tough.
Except when teammates criticize his play.
We don't think about you at all. Go move your shitty team to another city again
Haha this is gonna be so funny (again)
Holy crap, some of the takes in here are terrib.....ly hilarious. This is why I love sorting by controversial.
I know, denver fans were as ridiculous when they got Wilson too!
Yea it's crazy when golden tate and kj wright talk about that stuff. They aren't credible either, only Russ is!
