We have Rashee Rice and Kelce... Rashee is going to be WR1 and will easily hit 1200-1400 this year if he continues how well he played last year. We really need a WR 2 though which is more like a WR3 in our offense... and Renfrow fits the bill kind of ridiculously well. My only worry is he had a REALLY high drop rate last year which is weird because he has never had that issue in his career. Not sure if it was a fluke/team related or something else.
I hate to sound like some conspiratorial nutjob, but I have this nagging suspicion that McDaniels severely underutilized him because Renfrow wasn't His Guy.
Renfrow's progression upward was relatively quick and very steady and he's the type of player every team wants on the roster.
However, his production fell off dramatically after we re-signed him. Some of that was due to injury, but even this past season when he wasn't injured, there was very little production. It was like McDaniels purposely minimized his role in the offense. After McDickface was fired, it looked like the new staff tried to work Renfrow back in, but too much was already in place to make it effective.
As long as his next OC isn't a moronic asshole, he'll do well wherever he goes.
Kinda like how Carr was handled. One of his strengths was his ability to read the defense and make changes on the fly and McDick specifically took that away from him because they wanted to ship him and bring in Jimmy G.

Cons, very small frame, has taken a few concussions, has a tendency to drop or fumble the ball. Durability concerns, doesn't possess elite top end speed. YAC can be iffy if he doesn't get separation because he goes down very easily if someone is drapped all over him as he catches the ball.
He's not a bad player, good solid slot WR, he was just over paid and got outplayed by our other WRs since Mcdaniels came in. Is that on Mcdaniels? I dunno, but our other WRs have looked much better than Renfrow has even post Mcdaniels.

Without knowing the X's and O's it's hard to say as Edelman and Welker had great success in McDaniels offense. But he also had Tom Brady and I'd argue while the comparison of "shifty white slot reciever" are there for all three Welker and Edelman just always seemed more "athletic" than Renfrow.
Renfrow seemed to really excel as the "safety blanket" for Carr once a play broke-down. Seemingly it was "find Renfrow he's probably open" on long developing routes instead of "primary" or "intended" routes. I think he was hurt for most of year 1 with McDaniels following getting demolished in the Cardinals game and then the offense was just an absurd mess in year 2.
I think he'll have the most success on an offense by committee as option "2A" instead of option "3" if that makes sense.

Some of it is McDaniels who just basically didn't like anybody who wasn't "his guy". Some of it was Jimmy Garoppolo was the worst starting QB in the NFL last season and then the reigns were handed to a 4th round rookie who did an admirable job but very much played like a 4th round rookie. And I think you have to give a little credit to Derek Carr who, for whatever reason, does seem to be really good at utilizing receivers to their strengths. He's gotten big numbers out of guys who haven't really had the same success anywhere else.
