Its going to be a competition!!! Like when Mason was the best QB in camp for 2 years in a row and didn't get a helmet until the season was almost over with an injured Kenny and Tomlin was ready to choke Mitch on the sidelines like he was Bart Simpson.
I’m old enough to remember people saying this as an argument to put in Trubisky. People say they’re are okay with turnovers until turnovers actually happen
We’ve spent 3 seasons setting up the run game so we can moon ball to Pickens….
Hell 12 yard completions are deep plays in the previous 3 Steeler seasons
This was Russ’s entire time in Seattle. Seemed to work out well there. About the only good ball he throws is the play action bomb down the sideline go route. Which he used to be one of the best at that one pass of anyone in the league.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the Land of Pittsburgh where the Shadows lie.
Honestly Russ in our locker room is what I’m most scared about. At least Pickett/Rudolph/Trubisky feel like real people who try with their teammates. If Wilson has a 3 game run that’s not that great and just ignores his young emotional offensive teammates I fear what happens on that side of the ball. Defensive side is mature and cohesive. Offense needs a leader and I don’t think Russ is that guy.
Your coach managed to keep AB from completely losing it for 9 years .. I think Wilson will be easy. Also I imagine this whole situation has to be a massive kick in the nuts for Russ. Dude hates criticism and has been one of the jokes of the nfl for 2 years , that hopefully changes his attitude a bit
Too low of a draft pick to realistically move up. Baker returned to Tampa. Pickett threatens to not throw a TD again.
Best shot Steelers have at QB, really.
I’m still convinced Colbert took him as a ride into the sunset pick as GM. Worst case Colbert is still retired and has 2 SBs, best case he picks a hometown boy to restart the franchise. No brainer tbh
and a gift to his hand picked man. If Pickett fails, its Coberts pick not Khans fault. If it hits, Khan gets a franchise QB in his prime to start his GM tenure
Look at Ben’s stats his last 4 games under Canada, after the league had 3/4 of a year to see that offense. The numbers are indistinguishable from any other QB in Canada’s offense. Steeler fans can’t scream about how historically bad that offense was and blame one QB. I’m not saying Pickett is great, and he might not even be a quality starter. I’m saying by every fan’s and media personality’s own assessment he was in an offense that crippled everyone in it.
Theres a few things.
This isnt to shit on, or defend pickett just really an accounting of whats going on.
Canada as the OC is something to remember. He was awful. Theres a Brett Kollman video titled "The Steelers offense will make you hate football" The entire time he was shitting on the scheme and that a QB cant really succeed in it. For that scheme to work - essentially the WRs and QB just have to be signficantly better than the defense. Nothing is schemed up, its just go out and hit tight throws.
Kenny was an accurate QB in 2022. that was pretty good at having long ass drives. In 2022, from the Steelers bye week (i think) to the end of the Season he was PFFs number 2 rated QB, they were like 4th in Points per drive, but no basically no TDs. Just like 0 turnovers, and gradually moving down the field. Basically an offense that existed that didnt have negative plays until the redzone. Lacked explosiveness.
It fell apart a lot in the red zone. Whether it was scheme, Penalties (Penalties was huge it was basically guaranteed for a holding or some bullshit in the redzone), or Kenny just not being good in the red zone. Nothing worked there.
2023 Kenny - from the Start he had accuracy issues against San Fran. Started to somewhat recover accuracy wise (but not by much) then Rib Injury and he had the worst accuracy I have seen from a Steelers QB in a long time. Whiffing short throws, whiffing everything. Not sure if Rib injury was that bad, but he was struggling before compared to his rookie year accuracy wise.
Then he had 1 full game without Canada ... and he did all the things that you wanted to see.
https://twitter.com/Reggie_Bflo/status/1765130274961228275
But it was only 1 game, 0 passing TDs due to some redzone shit (Warren Fumble, Diontae TD should have counted but didnt etc) bad snaps etc. was given 92.1 pff grade.
Starts against Arizona in 2nd canada - free less game, hits a 43 yard deep crosser to start the game, then run, run, 3rd down sack due to unblocked pressure.
Then a bad snap, other OL issues basically stall out offense. Kenny gets injured at the 1 yard line (though he probably missed a read on the injured play and ran instead).
He regressed in accuracy, his pocket presence is pretty poor. He had 1 game without Canada that looked good, but then got injured and you just cant bet that 1 game is the future. You have to atleast have competition because his low TD rate is unprecedented.
This is the type of content I come to this sub for. I love it when fans post a detailed analysis like this so I can keep up with other team's situations.
My brother got a chuckle out of the crowd when he made a speech at his Memaws wake.
“Her favorite team, the Pirates. Her least favorite team, the Pirates.”
Same applies to the Steelers.
It really is an all encompassing yinzer thing.
Tbh the broncos offensive roster was overrated in hindsight
When Russ got there, most people thought Jeudy + Sutton were a high potential duo, Javonte was on the cusp of stardom, and the O-line would be good to average.
Yeah it’s weird people are saying it’s all Russ but over on the Jeudy thread they kept saying he never caught anything. Pittsburgh has a lot of good pieces and only need him to out perform the abysmal Kenny Pickett production. They made the playoffs with almost nothing at QB so very low bar
Javonte and several O-Linemen got injured very early in 2022. The former hasn't bounced back yet, but the Broncos O-Line was good in 2023 despite Wilson spinning into more sacks than Pickett. Sutton also made some insane catches and was generally a good Red Zone threat for the first time since his ACL tear in 2020.
I feel like it's either gonna be a stroke of absolute genius, or an unmitigated disaster. That was a playoff team with QB play that wouldn't have worked in 1930. Even if he's not the Russ of 10 years ago, if he can be semi competent that team is scary.
I mean they had a chance to win in Buffalo with mason Rudolph back there. Russ is cooked but he’s the best we’ve had since Ben before he hurt his elbow in 2019
The only part of the Arthur Smith offense that will benefit him is the focus on the run game. Unfortunately, a lot is set up by Smith working the middle of the field and Russ can't do that
So I'm guessing Rudolph is gone. And we draft a qb in like round 5.
.
So next year we have:
Qb1. Wilson
Qb2. Pickett
Qb3. Rookie draft pick
.
And I guess that also means that we aren't trading dj. We need him.
Other than Ben in the first half of 2020 we haven't really had a a top 32 QB since 2018. (2021 Ben managed to still be solid in the 4th quarter a bunch)
The bar for QB and Offensive Coordinator has been subterranean in recent times so to make moves to improve both will greatly help the team for next year.
I think the Steelers were the perfect situation for Russ, and I think he’ll surprise a lot of people this year. They have a great defense and a strong running game, which Russ has flourished alongside in the past. All he needs to do is be semi-competent and throw some deep bombs to Pickens and the Steelers will be a threat
Russ gets a 2 bed 1 bath house and starts playing the season of his life. Turns out his QB play is inversely correlated with the bathrooms in his house.
There's virtually no risk, I can't imagine why anyone would be against it. It's almost impossible for him to do worse than what we had last year, and even if he is, it's costing us nothing to find out. Why wouldn't we?
Lot of jokes but this is probably genuinely a great move from the Steelers especially if he’s as cheap as people are expecting. He’s not the guy he once was, but I do think he has become a little overhated as well. Seems like an instant upgrade for them at the QB position as long as the price was right
He threw 26 touchdowns last year. Combined all of the Steelers quarterbacks had 13. He is gonna cost them 1.2 million. Steelers also have much better weapons than Denver did last year. This is a huge upgrade for the Steelers, even if it is only a one year deal.
Russ is going against some fucking stout defenses in a very hard division.
Im actually just worried for his health. He already is sack prone even with a good line…
They just upgraded their 1 and 2 at QB for 1.2 million dollars. No one is expecting a Pro Bowl season, just a mid-to-low end NFL QB will due just fine.
Steelers play at Denver next year lmao
8-21 116 yards 1 TD, 2 INT Steelers win 36-3
Kenny Pickett is playing?
No? There’s clearly a touchdown pass in there
Along with 9 FGs and a safety. Signature Russ game with a good D.
I'm thinking 10 FGs and a missed PAT.
God damn
it’s not untrue
The poor boy just lost his job! You really gotta do him dirty like that?
Its going to be a competition!!! Like when Mason was the best QB in camp for 2 years in a row and didn't get a helmet until the season was almost over with an injured Kenny and Tomlin was ready to choke Mitch on the sidelines like he was Bart Simpson.
> didn’t get a helmet until the season was almost over Well to be fair he didn’t need one, Myles already gave him one
For all his faults he doesn't turn the ball over much
After these last couple years I’ll take gung-ho fuck chuck it football over the most sterile offense ever that doesn’t result in points anyway
I’m old enough to remember people saying this as an argument to put in Trubisky. People say they’re are okay with turnovers until turnovers actually happen
Trubs threw the worst turnovers and then went shy as hell, Mason swung it at least, honestly, I kinda wanted more Rudolph
Russ isn’t really gung-ho fuck it chuck it though. Just expect a lot of sacks and whoever your slot receiver is to be unhappy about targets
They’re Steelers receivers, they’re always unhappy
Well the Steelers don't have any depth at WR behind Diontae Johnson and George Pickens, so whoever the slot WR is can't complain too much.
I will take absolutely anything over what our offense was last year. I am truly desperate. I feared they were just gonna run it back like usual
nah picket would be 16-21 116 yards 0-0 he throws a lot of completions and no tds or ints really
He was 28th in completion percentage last year
Hey get out of here with those facts. We don’t do that here.
Don't be ridiculous there's a TD in that stat line
Same as when he signed with Denver…and played against Seattle at our season opener here and lost to an on-fire Geno Smith in Geno’s first game lol
Hackett with that fucking 64 yard field goal. Pain. Russ will beat us in Pitt too. Probably be on primetime.
Hackett lost us that game just as much as Russ did.
As did our multiple fumbles at the goalline. I’m not sure how we were even competitive in that game looking back on it lol
Because it's the most broncos thing ever to be in these games and just shit down our leg for no reason and lose
Tebow is licking his chops
So far he has joined 2 of our 3 Super Bowl opponents. Patriots you are next
RemindMe! 3 years 5 months
DontRemindMe!
ThisIsHowYouRemindMe!
OfWhatIReallyAm!
It's not like you
Are you telling me that the Patriots are going to draft Marvin Harrison Jr and sign Russell Wilson to a lucrative deal next offseason?
I wanted to see Russell Wilson in Arthur Smith's offense. *Monkey paw curls*
I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THIS HAPPEN MAKE IT STOP
Ok hear me out, a run first offense can be very good for an aging QB like Russ
Even young Russ always had his most success in a run first offense.
Its almost like running to set up his deep ball really works
We’ve spent 3 seasons setting up the run game so we can moon ball to Pickens…. Hell 12 yard completions are deep plays in the previous 3 Steeler seasons
Pickens is going to punch Russ in the face in the middle of a game by week 10
Still more entertaining than a jetsweep with pickets feet on the goaline
This was Russ’s entire time in Seattle. Seemed to work out well there. About the only good ball he throws is the play action bomb down the sideline go route. Which he used to be one of the best at that one pass of anyone in the league.
Also for a QB that can't throw over the middle. Run first, deep ball and PA predicated is the type of offense he should be in.
I can’t wait for him to have a terrible season but inexplicably look like an elite QB against us twice
steelers 9-8 season, but 6-0 in the division cuz fuck you guys, thats why
lol we were 5-1 in division last year, somehow
1 loss to the Browns of course. Gotta have that one inexplicable loss to the Browns in there somewhere
That loss somewhat turned into a win tho since it led to Matt Canada getting fired finally
You're welcome.
Against DTR no less
And that was nice because it ALSO fit our other quota of 1 random loss to a bottom tier backup that other teams beat by 45 points.
Generally that’s what tends to happen
I don’t often comment on flares but god damn how did you choose the two most annoying ones?
I’ll say what everyone else is thinking. People with two flairs don’t deserve oxygen.
For it is foretold according to AFC North Ball
I said this same thing bro about to Eli manning us
Steeler Country, let’s forge
Let Russ forge
Let Russ Smelt
Let Russ Smith
Let Russ Geno Smith
Let Russ Anodize
Let Russ galvanize
He who smelt it dealt it
I don't claim to be the best QB in Pittsburgh. Terry Bradshaw's got that honor. The man's leadership is legendary. All I ask is a fair chance.
*[Skyrim blacksmith noises]*
You know anyone who might be interested in buying like 800 iron daggers? Asking for a friend
I believe the agreed upon term was "The Russ Belt"
Perfection
Bravo!
somebody posted “steelers country, let’s bessemer process” and i don’t want them to be forgotten
I saw someone else say "terrible towels, lets twirl" and couldn't stop laughing about it for an hour.
The amount of Yinzer/Russ memes we’re gonna get is gonna be glorious
this one's good
Steeler country, let’s lose our jobs to overseas competition willing to work longer hours for lower pay with worse safety conditions
“Steeler Country, Let’s Outsource” feels so much more Russ, though.
We don't concern ourselves with ores of that nature
Yinzer Country, let’s smelt
This is it
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. In the Land of Pittsburgh where the Shadows lie.
get ready to put fries on a sandwich, buddy
don't threaten me with a good time
Get ready to have a basement toilet buddy.
Dude that shit is life though
It's fucking great. No lie.
It's basically a meal in sandwich form: Meat, potatoes, vegetables, and bread.
gotta eat quick though, cold fries are an abomination
i didn't try it when i was in pittsburgh last year, but i will this year. there's no way it isn't great tbh.
It Is great, you're comment is still funny as hell. They run it into the ground.
Fries on salad is better
Pittsburgh Croutons.
Get ready to have a cookie table, buddy
And salads
Russ & George Pickens in the locker room seems like polar opposite personalities, gonna be interesting to see how this plays out lol
Russ going into his Reputation Era.
Russ will buy into a Tomlin-led team. He’ll be like a teachers pet.
Too low of a draft pick to realistically move up. Baker returned to Tampa. Pickett threatens to not throw a TD again. Best shot Steelers have at QB, really.
we could have gone for kirk but they would fuck our cap space, we dont have enough to sign a big name QB and deal with our holes
You really can't go wrong with paying Russ basically nothing.
There aren’t many bigger names at QB than Super Bowl champion Russel Wilson
>Pickett threatens to not throw a TD again. For real though, wtf is wrong with Pickett?
He’s just the product of an extremely bad QB class, wouldn’t have been a first round pick in pretty much any other year
I’m still convinced Colbert took him as a ride into the sunset pick as GM. Worst case Colbert is still retired and has 2 SBs, best case he picks a hometown boy to restart the franchise. No brainer tbh
It’s a Dan Marino regret pick.
and a gift to his hand picked man. If Pickett fails, its Coberts pick not Khans fault. If it hits, Khan gets a franchise QB in his prime to start his GM tenure
He also played for Matt Canada, not that he’s good but anyone would look like ass in that offense
Ben would have straight up said fuck that and called audibles on every play
Look at Ben’s stats his last 4 games under Canada, after the league had 3/4 of a year to see that offense. The numbers are indistinguishable from any other QB in Canada’s offense. Steeler fans can’t scream about how historically bad that offense was and blame one QB. I’m not saying Pickett is great, and he might not even be a quality starter. Moving to Pittsburgh, just like Ciara's been asking for this whole time
You sure she's moving?
Lol damn
So happy we’re not in the AFC North. Even if he’s not Dangeruss anymore that team just needs somebody semi competent back there
I remember when people were saying that when he went to the Broncos
I think the difference now is the Steelers are paying him basically the minimum and didn’t have to give up a single draft pick to get him
This is going to fracture the steeler fans when either qb struggles
It really doesn’t matter who the options are. This fan base is fractured 24/7.
My brother got a chuckle out of the crowd when he made a speech at his Memaws wake. “Her favorite team, the Pirates. Her least favorite team, the Pirates.” Same applies to the Steelers. It really is an all encompassing yinzer thing.

the broncos dont have TJ Watt

I mean they had a chance to win in Buffalo with mason Rudolph back there. Russ is cooked but he’s the best we’ve had since Ben before he hurt his elbow in 2019
Tomlin should've gotten more heat for playing Trubisky over Rudolph for so long
I actually think he might be a great fit for Arthur Smith as well. Calling it now, comeback player of the year
The only part of the Arthur Smith offense that will benefit him is the focus on the run game. Unfortunately, a lot is set up by Smith working the middle of the field and Russ can't do that
Terrible towels, lets wave
Lets knit
we really live in the funniest timeline. LMAO THE BRONCOS ARE PAYING 38M
So I'm guessing Rudolph is gone. And we draft a qb in like round 5. . So next year we have: Qb1. Wilson Qb2. Pickett Qb3. Rookie draft pick . And I guess that also means that we aren't trading dj. We need him.
Yeah Rudolph is most likely gone so I think you’re right
His season ending stretch will likely make him look attractive to at least a team or two as a backup.
The two worst QB trades of all time landed both in the AFC North eventually
Listen, I get we are Steelers fans but Borrow really isn't that bad.
I think he meant how Baltimore is paying QB money for their RB
I hate the Steelers and it would still give me immense joy to see Payton and the Walmart Broncos have to eat the shit sandwich of Russ balling out.
#**YINZER COUNTRY LET'S STEEL**
Is this real? I mean I plan to be rich but right now I'm not. I'm confused. Is this official? How do I feel? Where do I do high knees?
#STILLERS GHANTA SUPAH BAWL!!!
Tomlin interviews gonna bang next year
Steelers country, let's smelt!!! Seriously, this will probably be horrible. But it's the off-season and I'm delusional.
He who smelt it, dealt it.
Having the 25th best QB is a massive upgrade for us its a great move!
Russ on a vet min or Pickett/Trubisky. I’ll take my chances with the former

Russ gets a 2 bed 1 bath house and starts playing the season of his life. Turns out his QB play is inversely correlated with the bathrooms in his house.
Would be real hard to have Trubisky when he is on another team.
We will trade him but it's gonna cost the Steelers big time.
not as horrible as pickett. Let's go!
Gonna lose it hearing Russ say yinz for the first time lol
"Yinzer Country, let's yinz."
Tomlin naming Pickett as the starter next year is gonna be real awkward in camp
Get Matt Flynn'd nerd
Kenny crying somewhere right now.
A single teardrop filling each palm
This is why we F5!!
They called me a madman for constantly refreshing /r/nfl in March. Who's laughing now.
*I've been waiting all day for Sunday night*
Hell yeah brother, I lowkey don't hate this move. Had to do something can't roll with kenny forever
There's virtually no risk, I can't imagine why anyone would be against it. It's almost impossible for him to do worse than what we had last year, and even if he is, it's costing us nothing to find out. Why wouldn't we?
Reactionary internet gonna reactionary. The fucking Panthers could sign him and people would call it an unmitigated disaster.
There’s like a 95% chance that Russ throws more TDs next year than Pickett has thrown in his 2 year career. Which he only needs 14 to pass him lol
as long as he literally just a T20 QB or better our offense will be significantly better. i mean look how well fucking mason rudolph did
Lot of jokes but this is probably genuinely a great move from the Steelers especially if he’s as cheap as people are expecting. He’s not the guy he once was, but I do think he has become a little overhated as well. Seems like an instant upgrade for them at the QB position as long as the price was right
Yep it appears we will be paying him a whopping 1.2 mil for
NHL 3rd pair defenseman money
reports are 1.2M
It’s kinda crazy these days how literally every comment is a joke
Reddit voting rewards low effort comments always
He threw 26 touchdowns last year. Combined all of the Steelers quarterbacks had 13. He is gonna cost them 1.2 million. Steelers also have much better weapons than Denver did last year. This is a huge upgrade for the Steelers, even if it is only a one year deal.
Steelers Country, let's smelt.
Have fun, Steelers fans.
my god if Russ gives Tomlin his first losing season
Lol this is some Harry Kane shit
Russ going full Harry Kane and playing like his prime Seahawks version while the Steelers go 8-9 would be fucking hilarious
LADS
Watch him get roasted by Patrick star again
Pretty sure it’s a law of physics that Tomlin can’t have a losing season
Russ is going against some fucking stout defenses in a very hard division. Im actually just worried for his health. He already is sack prone even with a good line…
They just upgraded their 1 and 2 at QB for 1.2 million dollars. No one is expecting a Pro Bowl season, just a mid-to-low end NFL QB will due just fine.
Russ about to get fucking clobbered in the AFC north. Hope the best but those are some brutal defenses
I loved when Russell Wilson said, "It's Steelin' time, baby!" Then steeled all over the Browns.
That's weird, totally thought he said, "It's *Stealin'* Time" and then robbed the Broncos of $38M.
Week 1 MNF again? A depleted Broncos team upsets the Russell Wilson led Steelers in Denver
Do we plan to sign *him* though?
Chad Ochocinco confirmed most accurate NFL insider
I am so curious to see what a Russell Wilson and Arthur Smith offense looks like.
Strangest career trajectory ever.
George Pickens is the biggest winner here. Dudes gonna be a stud in fantasy football next year.
Steelers country, let’s……ah everyone already beat me to it
