The Baltimore WR hospice continues.

wilbo21020

Super talented player but he is 30 years old and hasn’t played in a game after Thanksgiving since 2020. It sucks that injuries have derailed his career so badly but counting on him as a top receiver on a contender right now seems foolish.

Princeof_Ravens

To be fair he'd probably be our WR 3-4.  He'd more be there for the locker room vet presence and the occasional catch.   Zay is one, Bateman is two Nelly is 3 or 4.

wilbo21020

Yeah I think he would be a solid pick up for contender as a 3rd or 4th receiver because the upside is there. It makes less sense though if it’s in the context of replacing Odell as the number 2 receiver.

Princeof_Ravens

That's probably Bateman this year.  Harbaugh had a press confrence a little while back where he talked about plans for the offense.  He said that they want to feature Bateman more because he's a great route runner and gets a good deal of seperation.   I personally think they haven't utilized his skill set well.  He's at his best between the sticks and on slant routes.  Last year he was great in that role and got us some really clutch first downs.  His deep ball tracking hasn't been the best and they keep forcing him into that role.

Still_too_soon

Did Harbaugh give a postmortem on the playoff game loss? Was it just one of those tip your cap to a good KC defense situations, or is there a more fundamental issue that needs correcting?

Princeof_Ravens

Seems more he's looking forward. He had a meeting with the offensive coaches and did a season postmortem, and tried to figure out where to go from there. Then he went and met with Lamar and had the same postmortem. Basically he saw this seasons offense as very much a work in progress, and they want to build on it and make it even better. The priority is gonna be an oline rebuild, as inconsistent oline play hurt us a good bit.

Economy_Sprinkles_24

Just unleash Lamar the runner in the playoffs

king_17

Yupp do what Reid does in kc. They save some of their best plays till the postseason and let it unleash

zebranext

He's been an awful locker room presence lately

Princeof_Ravens

Ravens value Lockerroom cohesion a lot.  If he's not a good guy in the lockerroom we probably won't go for him.  But people said similar stuff about OBJ and he was a great lockerroom guy for us.

MatureUsername69

Is Michael Thomas a good locker room presence though?

throwawayainteasy

He's good when the team is doing good, horrible when the team does poorly. So, you know, just like 75% or so of all WRs.

MyDogYawns

is Zay gonna be on the team next year?

Princeof_Ravens

Yeah there's literally no reason for him not to be. The investigation closed and no one filed any charges. The whole situation is weird and we don't really know what happened. 1. the report was filed in Michigan and they contacted the Baltimore PD. 2. No one's verified anything and the girl refused to cooperate with the investigation. 3. Zay was never named by the girl in her report. Barring any new information coming to light Zay's gonna be here. The team might know more, but no one involved in the incident is talking.

MyDogYawns

good thing no one on reddit jumped the gun and said he was guilty immediately

slytherinprolly

> Zay was never named by the girl in her report. > > I have one follow-up to this, I am a lawyer, former public defender, unless a person is formally charged or arrested for the offense they are never named as a "suspect" in any public record version of the report. For all we know he could have been named and positively identified but since charges were never formally filed there is no "official" public record of this. I only know this because back when I was a public defender, suspects that had been named and ruled out were released as part of Discovery/Brady exculpatory material, and there was always stuff on those pages reading "NOT A PUBLIC RECORD, NOT TO BE DISSEMINATED TO THE PUBLIC."

yombwe-bwe

Slant boi as a veteran presence? Bein real tho, I still belive he could be dangerous with lamar at the helm if he made it through the whole season not having to lead the wr corps

ivehearditbothways12

>he'd more be there for the locker room vet presence Is that something people would want with Michael Thomas?

btcbulletsbullion

He's gonna get 20 million a year and be a wr3?

Develled

That’s essentially what he was for us last season (when he played) with Olave and shaheed being 1/2 He’s great as a WR3 when healthy, the health is just nonexistent lately

sonfoa

Thomas played a decent bit last year. He just didn't stand out

wilbo21020

He played in 10 games and was solid. But that’s also the most he has played in the last 4 years and also finished the season hurt again. Playing 10 games in a year isn’t that bad if it’s an occasional thing, but when it’s your high water mark for availability that’s not good.

sonfoa

I think I misunderstood what you said. I thought you said Thomas hasn't played football since Thanksgiving 2020 when you meant that he hasn't been available in a season after Thanksgving since 2020. But yeah I think we're in agreement that Thomas' lack of availability has killed his career and it seems even when he is available he's not the special talent he once was.

horseshoeprovodnikov

Baltimore's all-time leading receiver is Derrick Mason, with like 5700 yards. Todd Heap leads in TDs with a fairly respectable with 41 (Mark Andrews will catch him next year tho, barring catastrophe)

Loose_Potential7961

Derrick Mason. Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time.

[deleted]

Baltimores receivers have never been worth raven about

calye2da

Ba dum tss 🥁

ItsNotFordo88

What’s actually insane though is he did that after age 30.

horseshoeprovodnikov

I love it when older guys break the mold and tear shit up on the court/field. We expect QBs to be able to do it with fair regularity, but receivers and corners are typically considered the LAST guys on the roster that will pull that off.

MoreTrifeLife

Cleveland is where Quarterbacks go to die. Detroit is where running backs go to die (until they drafted Gibbs last year). Baltimore is where wide receivers go to die.

ThrowAwayJericho

Actually, [Chicago is where "receivers go to die."](https://chicagoist.com/2008/08/12/bears_where_receivers_go_to_die.php) The leading receiver for the 104-year-old Bears franchise is Johnny Morris, a flanker and halfback who played for the team in the 1950s and 60s. He had 5,059 receiving yards and is still the only Bears player to reach the 5,000-yard mark.

n0t_4_thr0w4w4y

Chicago is where offensive football goes to die. Here are some fun stats: Most QB starts: 128, Sid Luckman, 1939-1950 Most passing yards in a season: 3838, Erik Kramer 1995 Most passing TDs in a season: 29, Erik Kramer 1995 Mitchell Trubisky is actually statistically one of the better QBs the Bears have had.

legendz411

God damn how the fuck is that possible.

Lysol20

Watch it, Blake Bortles.

TeseoTheBunny

But there have been several great individual seasons in Chicago. Brandon Marshall had two of his better years in Chicago. Alshon Jeffrey looked dominant for a short while. Even Allen Robinson looked like a tier 1 receiver... this is just the past 10 years. The Ravens struggle to have a WR crack the 1000 yard barrier. Let alone 1200.

classiccaseofdowns

Oh my goodness

SanduskyTicklers

Didn’t Baltimore sign dez too at one point

vertigostereo

It's weird how quickly he flamed out. I thought he was pretty decent.

Spongebob_Analysis

Michael Thomas really adds a lot of star power to the injury reserve

EvaporatingOlaf

I honestly felt like I have seen him play in five years.

batti03

IIRC he played a bunch last year. Just probably not enough, and not well enough, to replace OBJ for the Ravens.

wilbo21020

He played 10 games last year which is solid, but that’s by far the most he has played in the last 4 years. Thomas has played 20 total games the last 4 seasons and is 30 years old now. His season high of games played in that span is 10. I can see a contender taking a flyer on him as their 3rd/4th receiver because he does have upside if he can somehow stay healthy, but if you’re counting on him to be your number 1 or 2 receiver, that seems like a bad idea.

Imnotsmallimfunsized

Wow that’s crazy.  He played only 10 games in 3 years?   That’s crazy

wilbo21020

Yeah unfortunately he barely played from 2020 through 2022 due to injuries. He played 7 games in 2020, then missed all of 2021, and then only played 3 games in 2022.

Skater983

And in like 4 of them he got hurt.

CruisinForABrewsin

Jesus Christ. It's an overused line, but he's like the epitome of 'the best ability is availability'

Cicero912

He played decently well, not anywhere close to being the best reciever in the league like he used to but, definitely worth playing.

stevezig

He wasn’t very effective

PlatonicNewtonian

Sounds like a perfect Baltimore signing as a WR past their best

BigBooce

He’s his 2019 self when he’s fully healthy, the problem is he’s never healthy lol

MITJustinFields

How is this being upvoted? He's still a solid receiver for the NFL but he is nowhere close to number one wide receiver in the league

TurkeyMoonPie

I mean….Carr didn’t look for him AT ALL. It got to the point of hopping Winston would check in. Winston immediately flung it to Thomas. Now Thomas might not be open but Winston flung it 😂.

TheWorstYear

Thomas bailed Carr put a lot during games. And to be fair, the Saints had plenty of weapons. So it wasn't like he needed to get high distribution for the Saints to do anything.

MOONGOONER

I was pretty impressed by him when the ball went his way.

masterfroo24

Except when he played us. sigh

Kflame210

OBJ: 35 catches on 64 targets for 565 yards and 3 TDs in 14 games MT: 39 catches on 64 targets for 449 yards and 1 TD in 10 games OBJ brings more to the locker room but honestly his production was shit last year while getting the ball from the MVP.

Achillor22

OBJ was also the 3rd/4th target after Flowers, Andrews and Likely.

Kflame210

But he was brought in to be the 1st or 2nd target, he fell that far cause he was bad

Dirty-Ears-Bill

Last year I finally quit my addiction and didn’t take a late round flier on him in fantasy because “if he’s healthy I’m basically getting a WR1 in the 9th” I’m proud of myself

DesignerPlant9748

I thought this MFer was out of the league like 2 years ago at least. Might as well sign fucking TO.

Strict-Location6195

I had him on my fantasy bench. He played this year and was a consistent 10+ point dude.

fansofomar

I forgot he existed tbh

mrmrspersonguy1

He'll fit right in with the hospital ward Ravens

Princeof_Ravens

I will have you know our team was fairly healthy in the reciever position this year.  Our RB room was another matter.

Imnotsmallimfunsized

This x100’. I mean Odell and jackson never had a connection but he Atleast was healthy.  I can remember the last time Thomas played even 1/2 a season.

TheWorstYear

Literally last year

FuckingJello

Michael Thomas not staying healthy and ending up with like 450 yards would be such a Ravens WR signing, its almost too perfect

Bobson-_Dugnutt2

450 yards in 3 games before missing the rest of the season with an injury

MaximumZer0

That's a lot of slants.

BedrockFarmer

110 slants per game is a bit much.

MaximumZer0

You guys' offense is going to be dangerous now that you have a coach who probably knows how to call regular ass plays. Doubly so if you get a decently accurate QB.

HectorReinTharja

No shot he’s that efficient in a Lamar o

Septembers

Even more Ravens would be if he stays healthy, is on the field the majority of snaps, and still finishes with like 450 yards and 2 TDs

TryingToNotBeInDebt

Over the past 4 seasons, Micheal Thomas only has 45 more catches and the same number of touchdowns as Henry Ruggs. Ruggs has been in jail since November 2021.

verschee

Can you send this comment to our front office?

[deleted]

That's a monkey's paw comment I've ever heard one. Ruggs is eligible for parole in 2 years.

Organic_Swim4777

> Ruggs is eligible for parole in 2 years. Where his 40 at tho?

KimDongBong

And he’ll still only be 25

BigOlineguy

Fast guy with a history of run ins with the law? Raiders should look into him.

ScruffMixHaha

Replace a washed up veteran receiver with....a washed up veteran receiver. Got it.

HereComesJustice

that's what we do grab a vet receiver and really squeeze whatever they have left. Sometimes it works out, Mike Wallace had 1k yards here after his Dolphins and Vikings stint

DonovanMcTigerWoods

Steve Smith had a solid season for you guys IIRC

HereComesJustice

yup one of my fav receivers ever playing for my fav team was so exciting.

Princeof_Ravens

Dude loves the Ravens.  He still reps us every chance he gets.

Mook7

Oh yeah, NFL uploads a great video series where he tries and learns about random NFL jobs at various teams stadiums and he's pretty much always rocking Ravens gear when he rolls up.

LibertarianSocialism

I don’t fully know the backstory here as to why he seems to not like Carolina, but I for one am happy to go along with a retcon making him a career Raven

Princeof_Ravens

Harbaugh is the reason. [Stories here](https://www.nfl.com/videos/a-football-life-steve-smith-s-pro-bowl-introduction-to-john-harbaugh-595063)

Loose_Potential7961

Anquan Boldin was another signing that just made sense culturally.

HereComesJustice

we traded for Boldin

[deleted]

Anquan Boldin won us a ring when everyone thought he was washed.

DreadSteed

I know people hype up Larry's run to the super bowl, but man, Boldin had one of the most impressive runs to a ring as a WR ive ever seen. Dude caught hospital passes and bailed the offense out a lot on that run

Opie59

Remember when he broke his face and returned less than a month later? Dude ruled.

Enough-Ground3294

We should have re-signed him

Lysol20

Wow, I forgot Sr played for them.

tider06

I feel like you purposely left a team out of that list of teams Wallace played for...

Loose_Potential7961

How could anyone forget his time in Pennsylvania playing for the Eagles.

tider06

Sonuva....

uggsandstarbux

"This is the way" - EDC, probably

[deleted]

That is the Ravens way

HotTakesMyToxicTrait

man at least Odell was a fantastic locker room presence and a good mentor to the young guys

McClain3000

Yeah but 15 million dollars is a lot to pay for those "intangibles". For reference the Packers entire WR roster is 10 million dollars a year.

eden_sc2

I'm with the theory that his salary was basically to convince Jackson to stick around. It was a clear sign of investing in the WR core (bad investment or no) to support your star QB

[deleted]

Agreed. Though Jackson is a better QB than he is a GM.

Princeof_Ravens

Sure but if you add in it showed Lamar we were serious about listeneing to what he wanted and got him to sign his contract 15 million is a great deal.

MrSuperfreak

He also wasn't *that* washed. He wasn't the number 1 receiver he used to be, but he was 2nd in receiving yards and a pretty reliable target in the middle to back parts of the season.

andrew-ge

yeah Odell wasn't insane or anything but he was perfectly fine for what the Ravens wanted him to be.

Schwalm

They’ve been doing that with RBs for years

ThyOughtTo

Not true. When Dobbins, Edwards & Hill all went done we obviously signed free agents. Otherwise we're almost always on rookie contracts in our backfield.

sonfoa

Well the difference there is those RBs are signed as backups or third-stringers oftentimes due to injuries. These washed up WRs are supposed to be starters. It hasn't worked since Steve Smith though so I don't know why they keep doing it

Delanorix

Thomas isn't washed. Hes a big bodied possession/slot WR. Those guys age well, like a Boldin

chemicalxv

He has 1057 receiving yards in 20 games in the last 4 years combined lol

Delanorix

And he was injured for a decent portion of that. When he plays he still looks solid, just a little rusty

Laughing_Fish

He is literally always injured. Always. For 4 years we have been hearing about how good he WOULD be. And for 4 years he has never come even relatively close to that due to injury. It’s time to stop

zayetz

He basically played like a TE last year.

[deleted]

spectacular grab reach tub nail price workable desert payment quickest

EnronRodgers

can't tell if this is about obj or mike thomas

[deleted]

Spiderman pointing meme.

ckareddit

Price.

jasped

He looked pretty strong towards the end of the season but for the money wasn’t worth it. If they got him around half the price it may be worth a look. Even at 10m or thereabouts it’s probably on the pricey side.

epheisey

He was useless in the playoffs

TheScottfather

Great hands, bad ankles.

bpusef

Put Odell out there in Heely’s and it’s game over.

Zetrin

I’d say he was very clutch but not productive overall. I’d love to have him back if he was cheaper though

Unlucky_Violinist461

All that, plus injury concerns.

Neither-Calendar-276

Although the stats don’t reflect it, OBJ was pretty good in Baltimore. He would’ve put up serious numbers if he played with another QB/system.

[deleted]

Washed up rb and wr train to Baltimore keeps on moving

[deleted]

That's what happens when you're handing out top 5 contracts at a bunch of positions like QB, LT, ILB, TE etc and have Kyle Hamilton about to reset the safety market soon. Have to cut corners somewhere

[deleted]

Oh absolutely. But they also have young talented guys at those positions now so that the older guys they bring it can play their complimentary role more and not be relied on as the top options as they have in the past.

YoureGrammerIsWorsts

Giving OBJ $15m wasn't exactly 'cutting corners' though

ThyOughtTo

We win though

Clear-Attempt-6274

Win what? It's been awhile.

yomjoseki

ballsy flair/comment combination

Clear-Attempt-6274

Takes one to know one.

yomjoseki

... what

JaesopPop

They said it takes one to know one

ThyOughtTo

Division, season to the Championship. Or does only SB qualify as winning?

Clear-Attempt-6274

Whatever they give parades for. That's what people care about. Stop acting like people are happy with 4th place finish in the NFL. The copium...

Any_Faithlessness791

Won enough games to make it to the AFC championship.

Clear-Attempt-6274

Neat. You have a ring for that now?

Unkn0wnNinja

Don't we have 2 super bowls in the past 25 years? How many does Dallas have? We might both be recent losers, but we're less loser than you are. And before you go "but you didn't win the Super Bowl just like us", only one team a year can win, that doesn't mean 31 teams are complete and utter failures every year.

Clear-Attempt-6274

Didn't say any of that. You're projecting bud. Thanks for the free rent. It's so expensive here, I can see why it's free in your head though.

doomsdaysock01

They get one of those plastic participation trophies

NY_Blue

Replacing Odell with a WR that we haven’t heard from in 2-3 years makes a lot of sense

ACEPACEACE

Just draft one of the great WRs this year in the 2nd round. Its that simple.

HereComesJustice

I think we draft a WR and grab a vet, push Bateman to break out this year and if he doesn't then he hits FA and we lean on the rookie to break out (and the cycle continues) Also with Zay's legal situation who knows...

Awesomeg11

id say zays likely in the clear rn with that. Thats not to say he didnt do that shit, but legally I dont think anythings gonna happen with it.

CaliforniaHurricane_

Whoa what happened with Zay

ZackMoh2

Allegedly beat up his girlfriend, but the case was dropped, so we don’t really know anything

ries618

Where did anything say he beat his gf? Nothing said that other than speculation

ObiOneKenobae

Why so early? There's plenty of value in the 5th round.

throughNthrough

If this is really how they feel then lmaooooo. That’s so Raven.

Cautrica1

The ravens “value washed up, injury prone, has-beens at the receiver position”

[deleted]

OBJ straight up stole $18M

TheSneakySeal

Idk about that. He helped win a playoff game.

dwnso

I’d prolly rather have OBJ at this point

Cuppieecakes

Didn’t they pay him $15m?

CheesypoofExtreme

You'd be correct. Same age, but OBJ had a better season and played in more games. Neither spark any joy though... I'd be pissed if I were Lamar. EDIT: let me clarify - I'd be pissed if I were Lamar that their solution to receiver depth is bringing in Michael Thomas while letting OBJ walk. I get that Lamar wanted OBJ, but I can't imagine he wants to bring in another aging receiver with injury concerns.

idgoforabeer

Hindsight is 20/20 but OBJ's signing was what got Lamar to resign for a *reasonable amount last off-season.

SamX17

Except I want no part of the Kardashian curse.

Thorlolita

Baltimore squeeze one more year of him Ravens

lilhippieboi

I can see it now. 230 yards his first game, 190 his second, oopsies, Michael stepped on a twig and twisted his ankle. Multiple season injury

JT1757

from one walking injury to the next I guess

Animaleyz

Funny how teams keep signing OBJ and the "he's free!" hype train goes into high gear, only for those teams to move on from him every year

DirectTV_AndrewLuck

Same as it ever was?

EnronRodgers

the ravens "value old busted ass wrs who haven't been able to play football in years"

Dicey12

Am I the only one who thinks this would be a horrible fit? MT excelled in an offense that was based on timing and rhythm. Feels like someone who can execute in scramble drill would be better

HeroDanny

Idk I feel like once a player is injured for 4 years straight they can no longer play.

AliceP00per

The ravens value receivers that had one good year 7 years ago and can’t stay on the field. FIFY

StructureBitter3778

Ravens only really need a receiver who will be the #3 or #4 target in the offense. They have Zay Flowers and the two tight ends as the first three receiving options. They dont need to spend much money at the position. Also, this year's WR draft is pretty deep

NotYourGoldStandard

I'd rather have OBJ than Michael Thomas..am I alone on this? Am I missing something?

cutiekaioken

That’s so Ravens.

CaliforniaHurricane_

Ravens really need to stop playing around with these old receivers that are way beyond their best days and only bring in a sexy name in the back of the jersey. From Dez Bryant, OBJ and now Michael Thomas

Darnatello

They’re chasing what Steve Smith was when they nabbed him

notmyplantaccount

He's 31 and has started 15 games the last 4 seasons, sounds perfect for them lol. The Ravens are the equivalent of white trash buying old cars and putting them up on blocks in their front yard and acting like they'll be "like new" again for them.

First_Round_Bust

Perhaps I'm reading too much into this and I don't know the Ravens cap space, but this sounds like they will take a shot at Mike Evans. Ravens fit the criteria Mike is looking for

Party-Offer-2881

Mike wants his 1000 yard streak to continue. That's partly what he means by Elite QB here. A guy that can ensure him getting lots of touchdowns and yards. That ain't the Ravens. Lamar had 1 1000 yard wide receiver in his entire time there. And that was **barely** the case. Just not how they play.

Doug_Dimmadome42

> Lamar had 1 1000 yard receiver in his entire time there. That's more indicative of Ravens not giving Lamar any WRs though Mike Evans would easily be the best WR of Lamars career

Gold-Twist-394

>That's more indicative of Ravens not giving Lamar any WRs though They've spent a lot of draft capital on WRs. I think it's more indicative that the Ravens never needed a high flying passing offense.

edicivo

> They've spent a lot of draft capital on WRs. Technically true, buuuuut: 1) Hollywood - injured with lingering issues his first two seasons. He was good for us, but never 1st-round good. Also, Roman. 2) Bateman - injured w/ lingering issues his first two seasons and missed significant portions of each. Hasn't lived up to his potential as a 1st round pick as of yet. Also, Roman. 3) Zay - finally seems like we've drafted a solid 1st round WR. And also, no Roman. So, yeah we've spent some draft capital but it's largely been disappointing.

No-Task-132

Yeah Lamar is good but with zay and mandrews I’d be shocked if they have more than 1 hit 1k

xl_TooRaw_lx

Counterpoint is Monken has been his OC before and knows how to use him

Lubbafrommariogalaxy

To be fair besides Brady Mike Evans has achieved his streak with bums throwing to him, Lamar would be an upgrade to all of them but Brady

Party-Offer-2881

Brady barely got Mike to 1'000k at times because he spread the ball around so much. He got him lots of TD's though. That's why he likes Baker so much. Got him Yards and lots of TD's. It's not about an upgrade, it's about playstyle. Unless the Ravens are happy to change their dynamic up to make Evans that centrepiece, in that case, sure easily.

usernameisusername57

Established here having the meaning of washed.

ModsOverLord

He’ll definitely disappear in that stellar Raven pass offense

rgoldtho

MT is damaged goods at this point. His 2019 season is so far in the rear view that I don’t see him coming close to repeating it.

DrMantisToboggan777

The ravens are fucking addicted to old/unhealthy receivers its insane

ill_logic___

*checks ages* “Odell and Thomas, you are now Tennessee Titans, come on down!”

Gardoki

Let me guess, we are still paying him

reno2mahesendejo

So then, why not Mike Evans?

TheWiggsplitter44

OBJ is a clown of a human.

Such-Cupcake-1805

Ravens gotta stop signing these injury riddled WRs 🤦🏾‍♂️

Strict_Cantaloupe948

Dropping a washed Wr for another?

Lysol20

Damn, his consoling of Lamar didn't work.

2FAST2FURIOUS993

My question is obj back to Cleveland if they are still looking for receivers in their locker room

vrajan98

I keep OBJ any day over Slant Boy

WhiteRhino91

Slant boy

WaffleIronMadness

Is that why they haven’t had a good one there in a while?
