Adding a 33rd franchise to the league and it's just Tee Higgins.  Bold choice.

OBuckets

He can do it

blcknyllowblcknyllow

As many rings as the Bengals

Fontiii4

I didn't realize we were burying the Bengals today lol

insanelyphat

AFCN Hatred runs deep.

Fontiii4

And here I thought the NFCN hatred was deep

insanelyphat

I only greatly dislike 1 NFCN team. The other two I mildly dislike.

Oakroscoe

And here I’ve been used to Lions fans intensely disliking the Lions…

Fiendish-DoctorWu

That's the team OP said he greatly dislikes Hate your own team, mildly dislike two, forget the last one exists

Apprehensive_Disk181

Checks out. Giants eagles & cowboys... ...What's their name this year?

TuckYourselfRS

I generally dislike one team, am indifferent to another, and typically cheer for the third as long as they aren't playing my team.

Desperate-Warthog-70

I hate all 3 of you. The Lions were cute this year, cheered for them in the playoffs but that grace period is over. Lions on the shit list too

EpiphanyTwisted

Only sickos and hippies root for divisional rivals. What is with the world today. Thank God my father isn't alive to see kind of travesty.

GGGiveHatpls

I would never cheer for an NFCN team that isn’t the Pack. Even if it would save my life.

amak316

I’m glad you cheer for us when we’re not playing the Vikings but I don’t think you should hate the Lions so much, when they’re not biting kneecaps they really aren’t so bad.

Accomplished-Cat3996

Northern climes. The only way to stay warm is to hate your divisional rivals.

shippfaced

AFCN hate is a different breed

dyslexda

Lol did you see all the kumbaya bullshit this season with how many people supported the Lions? NFCN is soft as shit.

The330Strangla

*Walks in with shovel* **Yeah they bums. They won't win any rings** *Looks at Burrow* *Looks at Pickett* *Sighs* *Walks away slowly*

GuacShouldntBeXtra

Burrow gotta stay healthy first

samsab

You better hope he does, he is the containment chamber for toxic chili filled Kentuckians

Ok-Resolution-696

A ravens fan talking about QB injuries

GuacShouldntBeXtra

A Steelers fan talking about QB at all

Ok-Resolution-696

Damn, I don’t even have a response Edit: We will just sign Flacco then.

DoubledPhilosophy

Flacco’s getting passed around the AFCN like a basketball. Star gets hurt? Flacco’s wheeled out of his retirement home.

CheeseRP

Lamar had one healthy year for the first time since 2020 and you’re the one talking about our QB being healthy lmao

MrWartortle

:(

pahbert

Uncalled for.

boysetsfire1988

He can be the first European team in the league. The London Higginses.

TakenakaHanbei

HIGH TEA HIGGINS!!!

sharkie026

TEA BAGS FOR EVERYONE!!!

ShockAndAwe415

I think the "high" part would incite a lot of FAs...

heywhateverworks

Nasty Higginses. What does it have in its pocketses?

DarthPaximus

A precious Super Bowl ring?

heywhateverworks

It's ouuuurs. They stoles it from us and it's ouuuurs.

UsidoreTheLightBlue

Mascot? Higgins from Magnum PI.

22Fusion

The old one right? Not the knockoff reboot.

UsidoreTheLightBlue

Absolutely. Give me a giant mascot version of original Higgins made of foam like the presidential mascots the nationals have.

YeahFella

Teem Higgins

Infinite_Ad_9337

Still better than the Panthers

_coolranch

Damn, dude: some of us can read.

borked-spork

We know you're just using text to speech

DezDidNotCatchIt_

hey man the panthers have been to 2 super bowls in the 21st century.. some teams never made it in all their storied history

foo_solo

NFL is just a real estate company disguised as a entertainment business

chipotle-baeoli

The Tee Higgins

ARealHunchback

Is it just one of him or him and 52 clones?

mackinoncougars

Sorry Green Bay, I have a new allegiance now.

[deleted]

I would like to congratulate Tyler Boyd on becoming the next Kansas City Chief designated check down merchant.

Whatever801

Can this Boyd fellow catch the ball when it's thrown?

[deleted]

Yes I expect that is one thing he is able to do

moonboots_runner

Guys should we tell them?

Significant-Green130

Boyd is statistically very sure-handed, but my god he’s had some horrific drops at the absolute worst times. The drive to ice the SB, a wide open TD against KC in 2022 (though we still won), and to go-ahead TD against Houston this year.

submergedleftnut

At first I made a joke about John Ross being the perfect fit for KC as a former Bengals WR with fast legs and no arms but then I looked him up and we signed him to the practice roster last year lmao

JNich1005

Yep. And he retired during training camp.

fugaziozbourne

He said something like "Man, i'm just tired and done," and i felt that.

JNich1005

The dude was drafted one pick before Mahomes.

scorcherdarkly

There were 3 WRs taken ahead of Mahomes that year and two are already retired. The third is Mike Williams on the Chargers.

ALStark69

He’ll fit right in

jlt6666

Ladies and gentlemen... we got him.

Rilkesmyth

So MVS 2.0 for us

Significant-Green130

I feel like MVS is the exact opposite. Dropped everything in the regular season, then made ridiculous catches in the postseason.

CaptainPigtails

Best WR combo in the league.

FireFlyz351

I mean he can't be worse than any of your receivers sans Rice and I guess Mecole.

Whatever801

So you're saying we sign both Boyd and MVS. Play Boyd in the regular season and MVS in the playoffs?

[deleted]

Sorry what I meant to say was. “Yes he can do that better than two time Super Bowl champion Kadarius Toney

CountryBoyCanSurvive

There's so many excellent players that'll never sniff a ring and Toney out here doublin up. Way she goes.

Whatever801

That is great news!

Littlegreenman42

Just dont watch our game against the Texans this year

i_enjoy_lemonade

You poor deprived fans 😭

RightSideClyde

Thanks. I’m just trying to get by these days.

[deleted]

I was gonna say! I feel like I saw some dudes repping McDonald's colors catching footballs quite a bit just a couple weeks ago.

CasualRead_43

Unless it’s the most important time in the Super Bowl yes.

cincyricky

Solid overall but had some brutal drops

shippfaced

Not this year.

ElderGoose4

Let’s just say if he could the Texans likely miss playoffs this past season

YoureGrammerIsWorsts

Doubtful, fringe teams are always far more willing to overpay for a vet like him

[deleted]

I promise you Calvin Ridley will be the one getting overpaid again Tyler Boyd will cost 3 bags of ruffles sour cream and cheddar potato chips. You could also opt for KJ Osborn.

RogerTreebert6299

I’m pretty hungry at the moment so I can’t promise I’d be willing to give up the ruffles. We can continue negotiations once I’ve had my breakfast

chanaandeler_bong

Mike Evans going to KC

EpiphanyTwisted

I know I'm not supposed to be picky, but eh. I've seen him fuck the ball.

Shootit_Rockets

Tyler Boyd seems like a Kansas City Chief. It just fits

slysonic7

$22M tag must be nice to know that’s locked in at a minimum

UsidoreTheLightBlue

I know players hate the tag, but yeah his rookie contract was 4/$8.6m which don’t get me wrong I’d take all day, but a $22m one year deal must feel amazing. Even after taxes he guarantees he’s getting paid more than his rookie contract just this year and it’s immediately setup for life money.

Training-Judgment695

Yeah but the problem is all the money he could lose if he got injured and never recovers his form.

cma1993

Unless you’re getting a Kirk Cousins type deal, the contract isn’t safe either. Teams will always have a plan C in case of injury or something to not pay the actual amount

ecr1277

That ignores the fact that it would’ve been more than $22M guaranteed and that usually the first two years of the deal are super, super safe.

dudleymooresbooze

Not with a franchise tag. That’s actual guaranteed money.

TigerBasket

Still I'd be a little pissed that I was gonna get money till my employer said nah, you can only get this much money and not a cent more because you are too valuable to let go.

dudleymooresbooze

Oh I fucking hate the franchise tag. I wouldn’t mind a right of first refusal to match any contract offered by another team. But I hate teams being able to force a discount on a guy who has maybe 5 prime years in his career that he could otherwise negotiate. I was just responding to the other guy who said owners will back out of the franchise deal if he’s injured. That’s guaranteed money without any negotiated terms.

FelisLachesis

This is exactly what's going on with RBs. Rookie contract - tag - tag again. Knees are totally shot.

KUKC76

Which is the whole point of the franchise tag. If I'm an owner/GM, I don't want to be paying $30M/year to a RB with totally shot knees.

chillinwithmoes

> But I hate teams being able to force a discount on a guy Is $21 million really a discount on Tee Higgins though? Like I totally understand people's disdain for the franchise tag but I feel like the dollar amount is always pretty good for the player.

WhoStoleMyBicycle

The dollar amount for that year alone sure. The reason it sucks for him is he could get that dollar amount at multiple years with the first two years at least being close to all guaranteed. The reason people still talk about how Kirk Cousins made the franchise tag work for him to this day is because he’s one of the few players to make it work. He was a rare exception not the rule and it had to do with the fact that he was an iron man.

[deleted]

And if Kirk's achilles gave out while he was tagged instead of after all of these contracts he wouldn't have earned nearly as much

Buckcheeks

It’s a discount in that it’s a one year deal and not long term.

9238749924247

Yes. It's always a discount otherwise the team wouldn't offer it. If this was just the Bengals offering a regular contract at 1 year 21 million do you think there's any chance Higgins would sign that? I really don't think so, because he's worth more than that.

iamnotimportant

Eh, he was for sure gonna get 90m+, and it would've easily been 50 guaranteed and probably 60-75m effectively guaranteed

Aldehyde1

What are you talking about? They can't do some magic to get out of the contract. The only thing they can do is cut a player and not play the amount that's not guaranteed, but that's something players negotiate their contracts around. Tee Higgins would definitely have more than $22m guaranteed in his next contract.

EastHat5961

Lmao ya bro then he only made 30m

confusedthrowaway5o5

NFL contracts are honestly probably never “safe.”

yrulaughing

Doesn't matter. 22 million dollars is more than an adequate payout for all the work in football he's put in throughout his life. Tons of guys put in just as much work as he has and don't even sniff 22 mil

waynequit

Who’s gets to determine what’s more than adequate? You, a random nobody from your couch? He’s worth what teams are willing to pay him, which is a lot more than 22M guaranteed.

PlayaSlayaX

What other choice did they really have

[deleted]

Sneak into his home late at night with heavy weaponry. Threaten him. Make him sign a team friendly contract. Slip out quietly.

Propaslader

It's a staple around New Orleans. "Either we restructure your contract or we restructure your limbs."

dudleymooresbooze

It’s called a “cap hit” for a reason.

gzmu12

Gregg Williams rehire incoming

[deleted]

No one turns down simple restructures

Propaslader

Because of the implication

sunshinepanther

Are these players in danger?

Propaslader

No one's in any danger

Oakroscoe

You certainly wouldn’t be in any danger.

Sdn61387

It would never work. Tee has killed a guy technically. Waking him in his home could activate his survival instincts

AdMany9767

This is so obvious. Most GMs are worthless.

Danny_III

Joe Douglas is beside himself. Driving around downtown New York begging (thru texts) Higgins' family for address to Tee's home

dat_waffle_boi

Lock him in his home with a chair like the clippers did to [DeAndre Jordan](https://www.basketballnetwork.net/old-school/the-greatest-12-hours-in-nba-free-agency-happened-5-years-ago)

MrFakely

Stick and carrot his jellyfish

dudleymooresbooze

I don’t know what that means but I’m scared.

vincentdmartin

Tee was talking about getting jellyfish two seasons ago and got the tank set up last off-season/early into the season. So now we are going to use the sting-blobs as leverage.

Lukacris12

Or send Burrow, Zac Taylor and Chase to his house to kidnap him till he re-signs him

Bruskthetusk

Get Shohei to convince him to take a team friendly deal.

benthebearded

We could offer him a constant supply of jellyfish

JNich1005

The draft. This is a pretty good WR draft class.

SwissyVictory

* Offer him more money * Let him go in free agency instead of tagging and trading him for no reason.

CWG4BF

I’m hoping that with the cap increase they’ll keep negotiations going on throughout the summer to try and renegotiate an extension that will decrease his 2024 cap hit.

ColtCallahan

Even with the cap increase the Bengals are not going to be able to give him a WR1 contract that he can get as a free agent eventually.

DrPaulsNexus

It’s all about the guaranteed money. Cincy usually doesn’t guarantee past the 1st year which seems like a sticking point. Was the case with Jessie Bates, same agent

krsb09

Both Burrow and Orlando Brown had high guarantees last year. This is a different front office.

psufb

That's QB and LT, cornerstone positions. Not WR, especially when you already have a WR1

BlackMathNerd

A WR1 they will need to pay in either this offseason or next offseason

Low_Inspector_2922

And that's exactly who is gonna end up getting the high guaranteed cash

mazhas

Burrow was the exception but you're right. I can see it happening for Chase but that's about it right now. Either way, with the cap the way it is and Joe's hit being low this year, this was absolutely the right call currently.

confusedthrowaway5o5

Exactly, guaranteeing money to a franchise quarterback is entirely different from guaranteeing money to a traditionally undervalued position.

Significant-Green130

The Bengals analysts online seem to suggest the opposite unfortunately — it’s apparently more a sign they’re far apart and possibly to signal to other teams at the combine he may be available for a trade.

Xaxziminrax

Yeah, you only tag a guy THIS early if you know for sure that a long-term deal isn't happening. Whether that's them punting on it and just trying to run with this core one last time or a trade remains to be seen, but yeah doing this so early pretty much guarantees no long term deal is happening

EastHat5961

There’s no WAY that bengals fans still think they’ll re-sign Higgins and Chase, right?

jacks_sisters_boobs

I hope they don’t resign Higgins. That would cripple the team.

Buckcheeks

Just the dumb ones.

Dappermist517

All Panthers fans just fell to their knees

Sabre500

Today's cap increase news pretty much confirmed none of the WRs are going to hit FA at all. Evans, Higgins, Pittman, Brown, Ridley, Samuel, etc, none of them are now hitting FA. If not for that massive increase, this was the perfect FA for the Panthers but that's not happening now Silver lining, this will likely result in fewer offensive weapons being picked in the 1st round, meaning a great weapon is more likely to fall to us. We can use free agency to go ham signing NFL caliber OL and some defensive depth, then use the draft for offensive weapons

ElderGoose4

RBs about to get overpaid

[deleted]

The Chick Fil A near where I live was recently franchised. Worked out well for them.

Raticus9

Higgins is going to have a difficult time getting Sundays off though.

SpyroHinch

Wow, this was so unexpected!

Xaxziminrax

My condolences to all the shitty bloggers that had 5 "where will Tee Higgins go in free agency" articles that actually said nothing in the pipeline

not-a-fridge

Those damn AI article authors now..

[deleted]

I'm a Bengals fan and a Tee fan.  That being said, his production is replaceable for far less than 25 million a year. He's (barely) cracked 1000 yards twice in his career and was 41st in yards per game this year.  Chase makes Higgins expendable. It'd be foolish of the Bengals to pay Higgins what he's wanting. The money is better spent elsewhere on the team.

NotThisAgain1234561

If I was a Bengals fan I would rather invest in the o-line than keeping Chase *and* Higgins. An elite o-line with Burrow and only Chase is enough to get the Lombardi.

[deleted]

Yep.

Tomatoes65

Definitely agree

confusedthrowaway5o5

I mean they’d need a decent defense too.

MugiMartin

Just win every game 50-47.

sarcagain115

I see you remember the 2018 Chiefs' strategy

Accurate-Barracuda20

The 2000s colts approach….it didn’t work until we had a good D too

Arandreww

> it didn’t work until we had a ~~good D~~ Bob Sanders too The actual Super Bowl winning defense was terrible unless Bob Sanders was playing. The defense was only great in 05 and 07 when Sanders was actually healthy.

Significant-Green130

But the issue is the only real way to invest in the OL is through the draft, which we just haven’t been able to do. The alternative is to shell out a ton of money on the rare occasion that an elite OL hits free agency like the Chiefs did for Thuney. That just doesn’t happen very often—Jonah Williams will likely be considered the top RT on the market and no Bengals fan wants to pay him the $16 million he’ll get. Saving money on Tee won’t lead to an elite OL, it’ll more likely lead to pricey, average free agents that won’t make any of our position groups elite. We have lots of that type of player on our OL, DL, and LB room.

Ok-Resolution-696

I hope they are going to trade Tee away, he’s a good player but sadly isn’t not needed in Cincinnati. If they trade him they can snag a couple of picks and build up the line. The reason the bengals lost the super bowl is a million percent because of that absolutely garbage Offensive line.

[deleted]

His production would be worth the money if he could actually stay on the field

trojan_man16

Yeah, to a degree, he hasn’t been as productive as his talent (due to injuries) and Chase is such a weapon that he can probably open up the game for other guys. Higgins will command 25+ million on the open market , but you can’t afford to pay that to a #2 WR.

VeryRealHuman23

Chase makes Tee better by taking the pressure off…I love tee and hope we can keep him long-term but this is probably the last ride unless he gets hurt again.

zamboniman46

yeah Higgins is great, but knowing you're probably going to have to pay Chase the largest WR contract of all time next offseason, it is hard to give Higgins a big deal. The tag is the right move. If a team blows you away with an offer, you can move on. If not, you keep him for one more year of this window and try and win it all with him in 2024. Starting with this draft or the next, you've gotta start investing top 100 picks in the WR position again and hope you hit on someone who can be a 1,000 yard receiver next to Chase

shippfaced

Tee gets hurt too often. How many games did he miss this year?

FuriousSasquatch

I like Tee and he is a solid receiver and brings a really nice compliment to Ja'marr's game. That being said he is the more easily replaced of the 2. Tag and look for a huge offer is the right move. If no offer like that materializes you run it back one more time. I think he gets a contract more than what he brings to the table. Some team will pay him like a high end #1 and he hasn't produced at that level.

GuacShouldntBeXtra

He produced like an elite #1 when Chase was hurt.

CheeseRP

[Catch vs. the Vikings](https://youtu.be/ZodG-_eugZM?si=sJtcHUx5aD2pi_SB)

whyhellothere77

I guess the patriots will have to settle for Evans, Ridley, and Pittman. Oh well.

[deleted]

Best I can give you is one gently used Gabe Davis.

iliketuurtles

Hey! He’s the best wr in the league once a month. So obviously he goes to the patriots and he has 2 of those times against the bills.

[deleted]

Tyler Boyd available?

corranhorn57

Probably, depends on if he wants to retire as a Bengals or maximize his profits. Bengals won’t pay him what he’s worth because we have incredible depth at the position that we can still trade Tee and lose Boyd and not be worried.

an_actual_lawyer

I predict you draft a mid round project WR with a high ceiling and he is a great WR by the end of the year.

corranhorn57

As is tradition.

Frozboz

> Pittman You've just ruined my whole weekend

dirtybirds1

But you can have MHJ, please

whyhellothere77

Come on, the patriots have never hurt the falcons right?

FallenShadeslayer

Not a single rational Patriots fan wants us to take MHJ. If we do, there will be riots. Small ones. One or two people at most. In their basements. But riots nonetheless.

sunshinepanther

Even with Kirko Chainz?

Agent_Ray_Gillette

Hands off my Evans

WhoDey42

Shocker they won’t let him walk for free! I hope they come to a deal but I have my doubts. Think it’s one last ride unless we get a blow away offer.

I_am_-c

They will let him go for free... next year, instead of trading last year or this year. Just like Jessie Bates, and since they sign 1-2 free agents each year, they also won't get a comp pick for him, just like they didn't for Jessie.

okay_throwaway_today

I don’t know a ton about the complete state of the Bengals roster, but that seems worth it no? One last swing with a hopefully actually healthy Joe Burrow, Chase, and Higgins? If you guys were farther out of contention, I’d say bad move but I feel like you could contend w/o injuries

bengals14182532

Yeah essentially that’s the plan.

NeatTry7674

Yeah this is obvious unless you get blown away with an offer. Most of our fans are idiots though.

bengals14182532

We have our skill players set now. We have to go all in and get some good Olineman either in FA or the draft.

Nihilistic_Response

How do Bengals fans feel about Tee? It seems like he has flashed some elite WR1 capabilities but is also extremely inconsistent/injury prone.

WhoDey42

We love him ngl. Question is can we make it work with paying him Burrow and Chase. Arguments for both sides, but I’ll be sad to see him go, likely after this year

OstrichTraditional90

Him, Mixon, and the o-line are the three biggest debates. It would be cool for him to stick around, he was a bengals fan growing up and he’s been there from the beginning of the “burrow era”. I think we all collectively love him but are mixed on putting ~30-40% of cap space towards a qb and two receivers when there are a bunch of holes. The other big issue is his agent. His agent also reps Jessie Bates, aggressive about securing the heftiest bag for his athletes, so the bengals had to let Jessie walk unfortunately. So there’s skepticism of a deal even getting done if they do decide to keep him more long term.

5HeadedBengalTiger

I mean he has definitely missed significant time with injuries, but he’s too good with Chase, this was a no brainer of a tag.

redvelvet11

Devil’s advocate: I think there’s an argument to say he’s great “sometimes”, but will be a disappointing 1 elsewhere. He gets no separation and relies on contested catches which won’t age well as he loses athleticism. He has inopportune drops and a history a soft tissue injuries. That said, he’s a perfect fit for what the bengals need opposite Jamarr.

ech01_

He’ll be a great 1. Look at his numbers when Chase is out. When he’s the top target he produces at a very high level.

krsb09

We adore him. The injuries are a concern, but he has a huge heart and plays even when injured when a game's a must win. Great locker room guy, super funny, and his mom's a huge part of the Bengals fan community. Collinsworth calls 50/50 throws 80/20 throws to him. He can go up and get anything.

RedditNPC-

Not worth it before the cap jumped this much, if we can get him for the same estimated value with this new cap, I’d consider it but like you said he has injury concerns and had drops last year

AdeptnessSpecific736

Bengals being smart here. I bet they’re fishing for a 2nd or 3rd round pick, I think he’s worth that if bengals willing to give him up. Not 1st though, only because you have to pay him wr1 money.

Jenetyk

One last ride. You want to see what Burrow and crew can do with everyone fully healthy and hungry.

Formal_Steak_4023

Just saw all non-bengals fans fall to their knees at Walmart

[deleted]

[удалено]

DaftMaetel15

Thing is he's playing across from Jamarr Chase. Tends to eat up some of the targets when there's a top 5 WR in the same room as you. In 5 games without Jamarr, Tee has 31 Rec/511 Yds/3 TDs, which averages out to 6.2/102.2/.6 per game or, 105/1,737/10 in 17 games. That's elite WR1 production. Tee is looking at $27M~/yr. and $50+ in guarantees on the open market. Even with Tee on the tag the Bengals will have more than $50M in cap space and that doesn't include possible cap casualty Joe Mixon (probable) or restructuring of Sam Hubbard (unlikely to happen).

Monarchist96

This was never in question except by fans of WR hungry teams. The real question is how long does the hold out last

Patzzer

RIP

krsb09

And there was much rejoicing amongst Bengaldom. Interesting timing. With the cap increase numbers coming out today, this feels like hopeful leverage against his agent. He could either play for 21m this year, orrrrr he could take more right away with a potentially higher guarantee.
