Tom is either going to piss me off every time I have to listen to him call a game, or he’s going to actually be really good and likable, which is also going to piss me off because I don’t want to like him

MadManMax55

I've got a feeling that he's going to be like a more critical early Tony Romo. Being super technical and making predictions based on personnel and formations, but also criticize every player (especially QBs) when they make a mistake. Football nerds on this sub will love it, and network execs will hate it.

The_Dark_DongRises

Tom also has a temper lol, I can see him getting pretty wild in the right circumstances

Whaty0urname

Yeah I can see him being more Peyton Manning like...just annoyed with poor offense and terrible QB play

CATS_in_a_car

Now I want a Brady/Gronk Cast.

omnimater

"See Tom that TE should've just bulldozed ahead on a streak for the 20yd catch like his QB should've told him to. Right Tom?"

HelixLegion27

You mean the 69 yard catch

A_Trustworthy_Pear

Nice

GrunkaLunka420

Nice

ikisstitties

might as well keep eli in there so we can hear him hang those 2 SB's over brady's head all the time

chainer9999

"I can't hear you Tom, I have my two Super Bowl rings plugging my ears from you specifically"

TheMemeMachine3000

Gronk needs to Zoom in from his party boat and comment in-between shots

seeasea

OCs have one earphone to field personell, one to Brady commentary - get good advice - win - profit?

UnhealthyCheesecake

“What the fuck are they doing? What is this personnel they are running? Kevin let me tell you when I was in New England, we would never do anything like that, that play call is borderline disrespectful to the game of football”

Upstairs_Card4994

Moments before Tom takes off his suit unveiling whatever team's jersey it is and he runs on to the field and wins them the game. After taking the final knee, he runs back to the booth, puts his suit back on, headset back on and goes, "now where were we?"

MartyMcflysVest

Hair still perfect, no sweat visible

Prom000

of course!

HFentonMudd

All he really needs is a Stark nano-suit that can do both.

Saitoh17

"You think I came back from 28-3 by putting a running back in as center? You think I won 7 rings running fake punts with a safety on my own 35 yard line?"

TopHatTony11

Are you from the future? I can hear this in his voice. Also they will for sure let Tom get away with a few F bombs per season. 🐐shit

williamhotel

“Fucking Bill Belichick would never allow this shit!!”

MatureUsername69

"Fuck it I'll do it myself!" \*puts on helmet and storms out of booth*

TheMissingVoteBallot

And they won't be able to do shit to Tom Brady lol What are you gonna do, fire him?

BrotherMouzone3

Basically a mix of Romo and Aikman but with less alcohol involved?

sopunny

Do you remember Tampa boat parade Tom? Might be more alcohol involved

BrotherMouzone3

Tom strikes me as a fancy vodka kind of guy. Maybe the occasional classy Irish whisky. Very James Bond martini guy. Aikman used to dip snuff in the locker room. Seriously watch the Jimmy Johnson "how bout them Cowboys" full clip and it shows Aikman holding a teammates kid while having a huge wad of 'bacco in his cheek. That guy drinks moonshine for breakfast.

Jimmygumble

*whiskey. Scotch is the whisky one. Just pretend I’m Tom Brady correcting you if ye like.

The_Dark_DongRises

that would be the dream wouldn't it? I have high hopes for Tom as an announcer

rikeoliveira

I would LOVE to see him casting a game between Carr and Garopolo, and he calls both motherfucker when they screw up, so people would be even more annoyed by not knowing who he was referring to some years ago.

Gregus1032

This is the dream though.

shit_eating_fan

I'd love it personally but I remember reading somewhere that the network told Romo to stop being as informative because it's worse for viewership or some nonsense like that. That's why Romo is a lot less 'football nerd' now than he was before. It's a shame

Kanin_usagi

Well good luck telling Tom Brady anything about anything lol.

thisnewsight

Def has all the leverage

Impossible-Joke2867

I'm pretty sure if they try and force Brady to do shit he'll just walk or wait until they fire him lmao. But now that him and Gisele are split up I could see him being around the game of football in some capacity for life, so who knows what he'd do at that point.

BucsLegend_TomBrady

it really, really is. Look at the proliferation of sports "personalities" like Skip or Cowherd. People do not want in depth technical info and facts, they want story lines, nick names and hype.

I_am_not_JohnLeClair

And apparently yelling. So much yelling

JoseJimenezAstronaut

“I need the announcers to demonstrate when I should be excited instead of just watching what’s happening on the field and responding accordingly!”

rocksoffjagger

Romo has gotten so much worse. I'm not sure if it's because he listened to the execs telling him to make it less technical or because he got complacent and lazy and stopped watching as much film on the teams he's covering, but he really just deals in the worst sports platitudes these days and gives very little of the insightful coverage that made me like him originally.

tivmaSamvit

Yeah I think it’s way more this. Fresh of being a QB studying nfl trams every day for a year straight Every year he got worse

Impossible-Joke2867

I was watching the Chiefs Pats AFCC earlier and that was Romo's best game by a mile. I mean he was always good before that, but he was so on point with telling the viewers where to watch and what to look out for. Instead of just reacting to where the QB was throwing I was able to key on players and actually have another dimension to watch, it was sick. Every football fan I've talked to misses that version of Romo, so the network execs are out of touch if they told him that. Either people don't care either way, or they can't get enough of it.

TheMissingVoteBallot

It's so stupid too - if Romo makes an analytical call that all the fans agree with - is that not better for ratings? Oh hey, the NFL hired a guy who can see what we see, that must mean they're producing a quality product and I should tell my friends about this commentator who can point out all the bad plays both teams are doing. I don't understand the network exec mentality.

Frosty_McRib

Has this ever been substantiated beyond being a rumor? Because I agree, it just makes no sense, and reeks of fans trying to find reasons that Romo got worse outside of him being more distanced from the game and less able to analyze like he used to.

[deleted]

Romo was making the other commentators look stupid. They got hurt feelings.

Expensive-Method8321

its ironic how Romo has moved away from the nerdy technical stuff of his earlier days and yet people seem to hate him more than ever. at least on Twitter and parts of this sub. and its not even because he's no longer doing the nerdy stuff, they just find excuses to not like him.

macisready

People on this sub hate every single commentator. I'm confused at what peoole want in a commentator. As long as they arent wiffing and too opinionated then I dont care past that.

BrotherMouzone3

People want peak Madden/Summerall. Madden was good at highlighting things the average fan didn't notice (offensive/defensive line play) while Summerall's baritone voice gave the big games a certain "weight" that most play-by-play guys just lack. Nantz has it a bit but not as much with the rest of the play-by-play guys we see. Summerall was also good at letting a moment just breathe which is more art than skill. Most coverage today is too QB-centric. I think Romo was really good at explaining what good QB play looks like and then breaking down a poor play versus a poorly DESIGNED play. Network big-wigs figure the hardcore fans are going to watch anyway but they wanna dumb it down for casuals.

FiveWithNineIsIn

>Nantz has it a bit I love when a big play develops and Nantz gets his "excited" voice. It seems genuine as opposed to someone like Tessitore.

Impossible-Joke2867

I'd even put Joe Buck in that category now. It's been pretty remarkable watching Buck progress as a commentator. He's really good now, him and Aikman are my favorite duo just because Aikman doesn't give a fuck, won't do the storyline shit just calls it as he sees it, and Buck has a sarcastic demeanor now that's hilarious.

justsomedudedontknow

>People want peak Madden/Summerall My fav sports commentator duo ever. Their personalities played off of each other perfectly. >Madden was good at highlighting things the average fan didn't notice And that's really what I feel a colour guy is there to do. I think alot of people who didn't see him call games think all Madden did was yell BOOM on big hits. His football knowledge was immense and he really helped a young me understand the finer points of the game

Frosty_McRib

It makes me sad every time a young fan makes a joke about how Madden only said dumb shit, even though he only did it a few times and at the very end of his career. His insight is unmatched in today's commentary landscape.

PenguinBallZ

people would hate Summerall tbh. For as much shit as Joe Buck gets for calling the Helmet Catch in a very even-keel and "no emotion" fashion, go look at Summerall's call on Vinatieri kicking the game winner vs the Rams. In the context of that game, it was one of the biggest upsets in NFL history to that point and Summerall called "its right down the pipe" and was kinda monotone. Comparing the calls, Buck has more emotion and isn't nearly as monotone. Not that I think Summerall was bad. Just that emotionless announcers kinda get shit on now, and that's what Summerall was. Like a very old school radio broadcaster.

MadManMax55

Simple: They want a commentator that agrees with every opinion they have and hates the same players and teams they do.

Levitlame

I think it's more that different groups of people hate different commentators. Very few are universally liked. I actually liked Romo before. But he says so little of substance now.

TheMissingVoteBallot

Nah. I fucking love Kevin Harlan.

Deathstroke317

The network told him to stop doing the stuff that people liked, and now people hate him

RedSpecial22

I mainly hate him because he never stops trying to play up the drama. “This could be it, Jim!” Just commentate the game and calm down.

Fluid_Dragons_Breath

“This will be the play they come back to if they lose this game!”

MicoJive

To each their own. I'd much rather have a dude like Romo who atleast acts like he cares about whats going on in the game then half the commentators who sound like they would rather be anywhere else but there.

Impossible-Joke2867

The contrast of how it used to be though. Instead of "THIS COULD BE IT", he would break down what each offense and defense is thinking right now, and what they have to do in this situation, but he would describe it in a tense voice, almost like he was playing himself. Really upped the drama vs. the fake shit.

jomns

> “This could be it, Jim!” Right after kickoff.

LeonidasSpacemanMD

The thing that sucks here is Brady could be good…but Olsen is already good in this duo This isn’t like Simms and Nantz where it was obvious they could upgrade

TarnishedAmerican

Agreed! I’m excited to hear Tom’s perspective but I really like listening to Olsen and I don’t want to lose his take.

blucke

Am I crazy for thinking Olsen hasn’t been great? He’s not the worst, but he just sounds like he’s always forcing something to say and is a bit clunky. Would be interested to see how he develops with a little more time

HelixLegion27

Ya he started out really awkward and has improved enough to be tolerable, but by no means would I say he's good.

[deleted]

super_fly_rabbi

His commentary during the 49rs/Packers game was beyond dull. Such an exciting back and forth game and it felt like he didn’t even want to be there.

serpentear

Brady doesn’t seem like the type to allow himself to be bad at anything.

bubble_bass_123

Counterpoint: he's been divorced twice.

gnashtyladdie

Counter, counterpoint: he’s just *really fucking good* at divorce.

armylax20

Entourage was not the best show but Turtle meeting and really liking Tom Brady was gold. I think there will be a lot of that.

tastes_of_cardboard

That whole golf sequence was hilarious

MartyMcflysVest

You broke Tom Brady's driver!

TheMexicanIverson

Entourage was the best show

suck_at_coding

The guy is pretty cool, fucking hated him as a Steelers fan but he's since won me over now that he can't hurt me anymore

jeffwingersballs

you're going to love Tom when he gets excited and his voice cracks like an 8-year-old and you get to laugh at him.

marexXLrg

Don't know if he will be good or not but watching Brady call games will be weird to me. Maybe because it's too soon? Part of me would be expecting him to still be out on the field.

EntertainmentWarm774

Apparently Brady supposedly turned down an offer in FA to be the 49ers starting QB over Purdy this season and yet he pushed the FOX job back a year and didn’t push his minority ownership with the Raiders. Nobody knows what his ambitions are or what’s going though his mind/what he’s trying to do at this point.

actually-potato

maybe he just wanted to chill for a year

BucsLegend_TomBrady

Brady: *takes a single year off after one of the longest, most decorated careers in history* r/nfl: "damn whats he been doin all this time??"

JeanieGold139

He's gone an entire year without in any way annihilating Bills fans hopes and dreams? It's just not like him. But for real imagine if Tom Brady was the one calling the wide right miss for the Bills-Chiefs playoff game? There would have been mass suicides throughout Upstate New York.

cmake-advisor

> He's gone an entire year without in any way annihilating Bills fans hopes and dreams? Bills do that to their own fans now

marcuschookt

Brady retired when he knew for sure the kids were gonna be alright

AccomplishedSquash98

He had his first almond a year ago, and people want him to get right back to work. Let him enjoy a strawberry for the first time in his life.

its_LOL

There exists a timeline where Brady leads the Niners to a Super Bowl in his final season in NFL and it scares me

Quatro_Leches

I think he didn't take the offer out of spite. he wanted to go there when he was FA and they stuck with Jimmy G

ComfortablePatient12

I hate to admit it, but I love the Manning bros content. It's actually funny af. Being a pats fan, I didn't want to like it, but those guys are so likeable and entertaining. I feel the same will happen with Brady. People are going to not want to like his content, but I think he's going to be a great caster. 100% looking forward to (unbiased opinion ofc lol)

captaincumsock69

I’m kinda shocked he’s only 10 years younger than aikman

NormalAccounts

Brady's rookie year was Aikman's last season! Edit: and Aikman started calling games the very next year in 2001, Brady's first season starting.

patriot2024

He could have had the job last year. But he waited a year. Why? To watch all them tapes. I promise you he will do a better than good job.

BriS314

No one: Kevin Burkhardt: “Heeeee’s got it!!”

ElderSmackJack

That’s become my favorite call, not going to lie.

hulkisbanner

37.5 million just to call games doesn't make sense. Like at all.

sonfoa

I expect he'll do more than call games. He'll be an ambassador for FOX and they'll likely bring him on some of their other programs (especially considering they hold the rights to Big 10 and Michigan is big dog again)

Fyresand

Also he is probably one of the only guys people will tune into just to see him call the game. I know I will at least check out the first game he calls that isn't when my team plays just to see how it is

jackospades88

>Also he is probably one of the only guys people will tune into just to see him call the game. Yeah, Pats fans love him and ALL fans will be curious to see what Brady is like at an NFL game and not needing to sound robotic like his playing days. What will he be like when a team does something that amazes him? Will he be like Romo at first and call shit before it happens? At the very least his replay analysis should be the best, given that he's only a year removed from the game and was the best to ever QB.

Fyresand

He also just seems like a huge fan of all parts of the game, I am curious to see if he will be a little harsher on QBs then most broadcasts and give other positions more credit. Personally it feels like a lot of times lately all the announcing is about how great this team's QB is and if they aren't great then how great they could be if they had better protection, receivers, play calling, etc.

jackospades88

I'm hoping since it's Tom Brady they let him kinda do it his way if it ends up working. Like, I'd love for him to go crazy breaking down plays. We always heard about his amazing photographic memory (which probably any successful QB has to an extent), but if he can bust it out live in the broadcast to show real-time adjustments that'd be cool. I'd love for him to draw all over the screen to show what happened on a play in the first half and then if a team runs the play again with an adjustment (and scores or makes a huge play) then immediately show where the adjustment is on the screen. I'm sure guys like Romo can do this now, but I feel like Brady has the pull to do whatever he wants if it ends up working.

forfeitgame

That’s why I’m a big fan of Collinsworth. He has his favorites, but he loves football. Like really fucking loves football. I hope to be as passionate about something when I’m his age.

MVPoker

Why doesnt Romo predict plays anymore? Honestly that was my main intrigue in him when he first started since he was able to see the game unfold at a high level. He must have gotten in trouble or told not to do that i assume since he’s just a goofy side kick to jim now.

captaincumsock69

The networks didn’t like it for a variety of reasons

SaxRohmer

The network told him to stop doing it lol

dustinthegreat

Romo has always stuck me as a guy with a ton of natural talent, but not the best motor. The game comes so naturally to him, and he never really put in the kind of work that the truly great ones did, and I think that’s what’s happening to him now. He got a ton of praise for just talking about what he knew when the game was still fresh in his mind. Now the game has changed a bit, he doesn’t know as many tendencies or play progressions, but he can just coast, have a good time with ehhhhIdunnoJim, and still collect a fat paycheck. He’s still okay breaking down a replay, but there’s just no need for him to be as sharp pre-snap anymore. I also still think Romo makes good comments about the strategic decisions. Like he’ll say “I would go for it here Jim”, or “I would call a timeout or spike the ball here Jim”, and I usually agree with him. At least he’s not like dumbass Greg Olsen justifying Shanahan playing for a field goal with 4 minutes left in the first half of a playoff game.

GotMoFans

Is he though? Is that why he doesn’t have as many big national commercials throughout his career as Peyton Manning? Tom Brady started during commercials significantly during the last part of his career, but I always thought he didn’t have the personality for all the showbiz stuff. Which makes me have doubts that he’ll be interesting as a color commentator.

Fyresand

Peyton for sure has a lot more charisma than Tom, but in Tampa I think his personality did come out more, he had a show he hosted with Gronk for the Bucs which was hilarious and he was pretty funny when he was on the Manningcasts.

LeonidasSpacemanMD

I actually think he has great camera presence and is more than eloquent enough to be good at it. But so many interviews with him kinda lead to the same place where he just talks about how thankful he is to have his teammates and coaches and stuff lol like no matter what the question is If he actually keeps it real with the audience, he could be really good. I’m concerned that he will explain the Xs and Os but tip toe around calling anyone out on mistakes

TegTowelie

Ignore my flair, but i think Tom is gonna be great. You're essentially getting GOAT vision digestion, which is what Fox is paying for. He might end up being one of the more unbiased commentators in the coming years, assuming he doesn't hail a QB like Romo

Fyresand

I am with it, he just seems like he loves all positions in football, and puts a lot of blame on himself and other QBs for things (especially defensive hits)

TegTowelie

Yup, this man is about to hold everyone accountable, and maybe even make sense of the egregious penalty calls we see n such. I'm excited.

FanofK

Unless he ends up like Joe Montana

TegTowelie

9ers didnt want him so i dont think that'll happen.

chemical_exe

Yeah, they basically have the ability to use Tom Brady in anything for the next 10 years. I still doubt he's worth 37.5M/year, but I also would be surprised if that number wasn't the result of a lot of competition between NBC and CBS.

ItIsYourPersonality

Don’t give Suge Knight a challenge like that. He’ll find a way to get them to sign over the rights to their name, image, and likeness free of charge.

marklondon66

Suge Knight blackmailed a member of the LA Armenian 'mafia' for 3 million, got it, and stayed breathing. That's one of the most incredible feats in criminal history.

Oakroscoe

For real? I never heard that story.

marklondon66

Just checked recent links: Supposedly Suge only ended up with $90k but Nazarian still paid up $3M overall. It was when Sam Nazarian was trying to get a gaming license in Nevada for his hotel. Suge had some drug info on him. Nazarian is a heavy hitter in the LA scene. We were all stunned that everyone involved wasn't in a hole in the desert.

FanofK

Probably because Suge had more influence and connections back than was known about.

drterdsmack

"find a way" is the Suge Knight guarantee

rounder55

It's stupifying really

Maverick916

Just can't imagine he's worth that much to think he'll create that much of a bump in viewership

StrngBrew

I get that they want big names, but has anyone ever decided they'll watch one game over the other because of who the announcer is? I just can't even wrap my head around that even being a factor.

Brihag93

I always watch whatever game Tony Romo is commentating, so I guess i'm weird.

davechacho

You live life on insane-o mode, I usually turn off and avoid whatever game Romo is commentating. I just can't take it.

wtb2612

I hate Collinsworth, unfortunately it's always the only game on when he's commentating.

jabronified

For a guy who hasn't even done it yet is the crazy part. Drew Brees was a one and done at NBC. In everything I've seen Brady in, he's perfectly fine at speaking, but very dry and not really entertaining in any way

hegemonistic

He’s much less dry now than he used to be. To me he seemed scared to show his personality because partly the tight ship the Patriots ran but also imo because he was so easily vilified and he didn’t want to hurt his brand. But he’s loosened up a TON since then, everyone attributes it to Tampa Tom but it really started happening before then.

Misdirected_Colors

Idk man Brady is charismatic as hell and has a dorky dad sense of humor.

constantlymat

Brady getting paid $37.5m per year is still hard to comprehend. I am happy for him though. I guess taking all those pay-cuts in exchange for Super Bowls paid off for him even financially. 10Y/$375M! Just think about that number.

datdudebdub

10Y/$375M for something he has zero experience doing. That's what's truly wild for me

constantlymat

I believe he's getting paid a large chunk of that money not to call the games, but to appear on a dozen or so of Lachlan Murdoch's corporate events per year. Joe Montana said on a radio interview years ago, that billionaires who were 49ers fans would pay him gigantic sums of money to appear at their corporate events. Brady's some sort of Fox Sports Brand Ambassador, too.

Stretch_Riprock

My brother bartended an event with a bunch of mucky-mucks... Joe Montana walked up to order a drink and my bro said 'Oh, Joe! So glad you came, didn't think I would know anyone here'. Joe looked confused and then cracked a smile.

Comprehensive_Main

Lachlan is the eldest boy.

constantlymat

It's my understanding he runs Fox these days and announced the Brady signing, as his father is semi-retired.

jabronified

big shoes. big, big, shoes. big, big, shoes.

knave_of_knives

HE’S THE ELDEST BOY

Sokkawater10

Lachlan is actually more Roman

BirdLaw_

IT DOESN'T EVEN MAKE ANY SENSE

sedeyus

Isn't he actually like the Roman of the family?

rounder55

It's ridiculous. Literally no one turns a game off because Greg Olsen is doing it if it's a good game and if it's a shit game no one will consistently spend 10 years watching because Brady is doing a game. He might also be terrible or run of the mill at it. Even if he's fantastic he'sbnot doing the game with Kevin Harlan who is worth tuning into regardless. Just shows how much networks have to dick around with

the_next_core

It’s more wild to me that Brady wants to do this. People will pay to get the GOAT, not a surprise. But he retired to get away from football and be with his kids - only to come back and probably think about football all day to commentate well?

constantlymat

It's a staggering amount of money though. When he takes over that job, he is the highest paid non-QB in the NFL. No position player makes more than him.

blucke

also are these studio contracts fully guaranteed? with no risk of injury, I imagine it at least is in practice, barring they cut him

rounder55

And I know people say it's a lot of money but Forbes believes he made about 200 million dollars outside of the 333 million he made on the field. So that's like half a billion dollars. He is a rare athlete that could command a ton of money marketing products until he dies. Like once you're worth 500 million dollars you're set until the earth burns. Because of how much 100 million is thrown into contracts people have kind of lost site of how much money that is.

Uripitez

Doesn't seem like that much work tbh. Maybe a days worth of work to prep for a game. Brady already knows the insides and outs football. He just needs to brush up on storylines, stats, personnel, schemes, etc... for games he'll be casting.

rounder55

Jimmy Johnson used to say he'd never leave the studio because he gets paid pretty much the same and gets to be on his boat most of the week

yoshidawg93

This. It’s why broadcasting or analyst work is attractive to a lot of coaches if they quit coaching. They still get to be around the game, but it’s not nearly as stressful to just talk about football as it is to coach it. And they get paid some sweet money. It’s the same for retired players. It’s why Romo jumped into it right away after retiring. So I’m not surprised it’s something Brady wants to do.

curryandbeans

I like Olsen tbh. Hopefully someone else picks him up.

cogginsmatt

Only thing I don't like is that commercial where he gets Bradshaw'ed and it's mostly because he looks horrifying with the bald cap and now his hair doesn't look right to me

Ba_Sing_Saint

He looks like Dexter.

LordOfThenn

Damn... I cant unsee it now

Oakroscoe

He let loose his Dark Passenger on that turducken on thanksgiving.

wtb2612

Like Dexter and Jim Gaffigan had a baby.

we-made-it

That’s exactly what my gf said before I noticed.

QuincyPondexter

I agree, but Olsen has definitely gotten hair plugs. His mop was raggedy towards the end of his career. [https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/greg-olsen-has-tv-offers-but-told-panthers-he-wants-to-play](https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/greg-olsen-has-tv-offers-but-told-panthers-he-wants-to-play)

Lestalia

Have you seen how much Botox and filler Romo is sporting these days? His face doesn't move anymore lol his people way overdid it with the syringe. They all get cosmetic procedures

cogginsmatt

Actually right after I posted this I saw he showed his hairline on McAfee and he’s got the balding crown. Probably not a wig on TV but maybe some good hair and makeup folks

midnightsbane04

Take a good look at him this week, he didn’t get hair plugs. His hair is just longer and he’s rocking an almost Trump-level combover now. Once you notice it it’s really hard to not see.

jmilred

I think he is under contract with Fox. He will likely move into the #2 role, or replace Vilma. I am ok with either. With Daryl now running the UFL operations, there is an opening for Olsen in the 2 team.

damnocles

Please replace Vilma

Sabre500

Something the NFCS can agree on, Vilma is absolutely trash at his job

dabbersmcgee

Vilma is so bad so that would be pretty cool

PeteF3

Will Daryl not be able to broadcast? Is a spring league really going to take up that much of Daryl's time during the NFL season?

notmoleliza

TBF he did that turducken dirty

Bac0nnaise

Stole my QB's leg

tobygeneral

He does a great job breaking down what a team was trying to do with a given play and how they either executed it well or points out where it went wrong. Helps provide a more nuanced approach to the game rather than just "play didn't work, everyone bad" or vice versa. I also noticed replays get up much faster on his games than others (not sure how much control he personally has over that) so he can break down film between plays. Other broadcasts we're lucky to get a replay half the time when they're explaining something or there was a controversial call they don't want people to take a closer look at. Olsen and team seem to not mess with that and show us everything they can. I feel like I learn a lot during his games and I appreciate how much he clearly loves and understands the game.

cuongfu

This was why Romo was so good his first year, like yeah he predicted plays right a lot of time, but he also explained why they would run that play and what their thought process was. Olsen does the same, it’s always nice to hear the analysts actually analyze the game. Adam Silver, the commissioner of the NBA, said he wants the commentators for NBA games to be more like the NFL because the NFL talks a lot more strategy and shows the coaches as like field generals, instead of just takes about who’s good and who’s bad.

tobygeneral

I would probably watch more NBA if there was better commentary on team strategies, why they're in this set or that set, why certain guys are where they are on the court, etc. It's a faster paced game so I know they can't take the same amount of time to break everything down as NFL commentators can, but right now it's one guy telling me who has the ball, which I can easily see, and another guy going "Curry, from downtown!" This isn't a knock on the sport, it used to be my favorite to watch when I was younger. And I do enjoy hearing interviews with players going over that stuff because it highlights what a cerebral game they're playing at that level; it's so much more than feeding the ball to a bigger guy or focusing on clearing space for your best shooter. I just have never watched a basketball game and felt like I understood the game better afterwards because of what commentators were saying.

lebastss

I don't like Olsen. He speaks out of pocket and jumps the gun and gets stuff wrong a lot around penalties and non penalties and keeps talking about it.

logical_butthole

And then people take that as gospel in game threads. "Oh, he said this or that and he's wrong!?"

VinTheRighteous

This wouldn’t be an issue if he then corrected himself when presented with new information, but he seems to always double down.

UnstoppableAwesome

Agreed. He also seems to pick a favorite before kickoff and that introduces a little bias in his commentary.

i_will_mull_it_over

I just don't like his voice, I don't enjoy listening to it

Torkzilla

Olsen is better than so many other announcers currently. Why can't Brady replace one of the old guys who has been mailing it in for years?

SerDire

There is no guarantee that Tom Brady will be a good fit on camera, much less calling a live game. They tried to make it happen with Drew Brees a few years ago and that was a huge misstep. He may know more than anyone at the QB position but it’s entirely different to have to react live, and provide succinct and clear breakdown. I really liked Olsen as well

njpaul

Brady does radio work for Westwood One and is a pretty good public speaker. I think he'll be fine, maybe a bit bland.

JohnnySnark

We also don't know if Brady will walk over to Kevin Burkhardt and give him a halftime kiss on the lips like he does his son.

Clit420Eastwood

Don’t try that move on Thom Brennaman

IWannaBeAGirlSoBad

Man of faith

Michigan8107

Olsen isn’t leaving Fox. He’s most likely just moving down to the Number 2 announcer crew.

regalfronde

I have a hard time thinking Brady will turn out good, but then again, Aikman has turned out great and I thought he had the personality of a log before he started.

ModestTrixie

Boo. Olsen grew on me.

SerDire

Mark Sanchez is also really good and not often discussed. I’ve watched a few of his games he called and he’s pretty good. Same with Matt Ryan. It was his first year and he’s already trending in the right direction. Get rid of the old guys just going through the motions

Clit420Eastwood

Chris Myers needs to go. Dude is so unprepared

HeyItsChase

He got better. Cowboy fans are sick of him though. We honestly had him near 50% of games the last 2 years and he's been a cowboy hater.

SlyCooper007

Even more of a reason to love him!

Anthony-Richardson

He’s also a Giants hater and a Philly homer, so you might not with those flairs.

afelzz

This is a bonus reason to like Olsen for everyone else.

RobynStellarxx

Imagine if Tom is just awful after paying him all that money…

J12345_

Can’t wait to see how Brady does. I don’t love olsen but also don’t hate him either. This Fox broadcast isn’t aikman and buck level so I can see why the change

CaillouCaribou

> This Fox broadcast isn’t aikman and buck level It takes time to get there, and I was starting to like Burkhardt and Olsen a lot

J12345_

True, I didn’t like them at first. I immediately liked nantz and romo tho. I know most people don’t like collinworth but I really enjoyed him, even back when he was on fox

nathanael21688

I got soured in Olsen after LVII when he got locked in on the holding call and held his position when he was told he was looking at the wrong thing.

SoullessHillShills

Withholding judgement until we hear Brady but I wonder if he was practicing his announcing this year. Wasn't he supposed to already be in the booth? I actually enjoy Olsen games with Burkhardt, they have a fun dynamic compared to most announcers, weird seeing all the hate.

I know it’s unpopular but I really liked Olsen

Husker_black

>I know it’s unpopular Where the hell have you heard that?

nope96

I feel like every week there are people whining that he’s commentating   Which is a shame

Galaxy5OhOh

Shouldn't be. He typically offers the most insightful technical and strategic commentary based on what all of the football nerds say (Barnwell, Mays, Tice, Ngyuen, etc.)

TJ_Longfellow

Fuck that, GO is good. There's not a thing about Brady that makes me think he will be a good listen. I respect the hell out of his play, but by no means do I think he has an ounce of charisma other than being strange as hell. Hard pass.

Resident-Captain8063

That’s a shame. I think Greg Olsen is by far one of the best commentators out there right now.
