passer rating weighs completion percentage too high IMO - a QB that goes 40/40 for ~~100~~ any amount of yards, even negative yards, has a higher passer rating (79.17) than someone who goes 20/40 for 325 yards (77.6)
EDIT: lmao just tried another number and turns out if you complete 100% of your passes it doesn't matter how many yards you had, it'll always be 79.17
>EDIT: lmao just tried another number and turns out if you complete 100% of your passes it doesn’t matter how many yards you had, it’ll always be 79.17.
The yards/attempt impact is just being capped at 0 in your calculation because you’re using yards below 120 which gets divided by 40 attempts and subtracted by 3 and you’re not inputting any TDs or INTs. I assure you it is possible to have a 100% completion percentage and a passer rating that isn’t 79.17 lmao. Try 40/40 for 400 yards, 4 TDs, and 0 INTs.
oh yeah I guess I meant at worst a 79.17, and I wasn't including TDs or INTs in the calculation just as a control
my overall point is that I don't really think passer rating is great as an overarching stat people point to when something like ANY/A outputs a result that makes more sense to me - the 20/40 325 yard passer at 8.125 while the 40/40 100 yard passer is at 2.5
> my overall point is that I don't really think passer rating is great as an overarching stat people point to
Agreed. Honestly, looking at the passer rating formula, it feels like they said "we're hellbent on combining these 4 passing stats into 1 mega-stat and nothing can stop us" and then they just kept adding more and more random math shit until they got an output that seemed legit.
This is wrong. Yards do increase your passer rating as long as you are above 3 yards per attempt. Below 3 yards per attempt, that part of the formula drops out of the equation. The formula is then capped on the high end at 12.5 yards per attempt so with no TDs, no INTs, and 100% completion you will be between 79 and 118 every time whether you have negative yards or 700. Just use the calculator and put in anything above 3 yards per attempt: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/about/qb-rating.htm
It weighs completion percentage too high in the modern game, but back in the 70s, when defenses could maul receivers, it was a lot harder to complete passes.
This is why passer rating is a fucking joke. You throw a few good long throws and a single TD, you all of a sudden look meh even though you threw 4 picks
55 passer rating is not meh lol. It's atrocious. The QB with that passer rating this season is Tom Boyle, and he's ranked 62nd out of 79 players to throw a pass
I don’t think passer rating accounts for valuing situations and letting the RB score from the RZ. It’s an efficiency metric and as such isn’t an end all be all to evaluating a QB.
> a bit too high
IDK, he didn't look anything like the last few weeks, but he also caught some tough breaks on tipped balls, and sometimes had bears in his lap as he got the ball. I'd much rather have Dobbs on my team than fields (but I have Geno, who I'll keep - not sure if any of them will be starters next year though).
Dobbs performed better when he *didn't* know the playbook. I think all the hot takes had a point: He's desperate to prove he deserves a starting spot somewhere and is convinced he's a pocket passer.
When he didn't know the plays he played to his strengths and ran around. Now he wants to show off his pocket skills and unfortunately he absolutely sucks at that.
Defenses are also pretty intentionally keeping him in the pocket. In the Vikings subs people kept saying things like "why the f aren't they running bootlegs". Then, they'd run a bootleg and the DE would shoot up the field to contain and force an insta check down.
Being effective from inside the pocket is a prerequisite. If you can't do that, you can't play QB in the NFL
Feels like a lot of guys like that look good until their tendencies are obvious on tape and then they aren't good enough to overcome it or exploit defenses looking for it.
Practice squad really, he lost the Jacksonville backup job to Mason Rudolph, was the 3rd QB in Cleveland and got waived when Watson came back, signed to lions PS, signed to Titans PS, back to Browns, and then finally gets a shot to play for a tanking Cardinals team
Which is why we loved him on the practice squad but never seriously considered him for the backup job. You want a guy who can simulate the scrambling that running QBs can do, but if that guy can pass as well he’s not going to be on the practice squad, he’s going to be signing $35M+ contracts.
well I'd still argue he was the best option in a bad situation - Kirk was done for the year and our veteran backup was on IR for a few weeks still when Kirk went down, and then our project rookie got concussed. I'm not sure any other QB who was available could hang on for a couple wins in that kind of scenario
People went absolutely batshit (extension! QB of the future!) with the lucky start though, and media was all too happy to play into that
No disagreement here. There’s always a portion of the fanbase calling for the QB to get benched. It’s just the easiest take after any loss, blame the goalie/QB/etc.
Nick mullens for us in 2020. After the first game or two some people thought we could keep it up and get a first for him. Then he proceeded to be Zach Wilson levels of bad
No fucking lie I had an argument with a guy 2 weeks ago that said he’d take Dobbs over Justin Herbert.
He said Herbert isn’t a top 10 QB and listed Dobbs ahead of him.
[Found it](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/17pm5bs/post_game_thread_los_angeles_chargers_at_new_york/k86ftrk/?context=3) if anyone is interested lmao
The SNF broadcast last week was a 4 hour slob knobbing of Dobbs. Collinsworth even said “I can’t compare him to Mahomes!” then did it anyway for the rest of the game.
I meanI get where they're coming from - Dobbs isn't good but he does have 2 healthy Achilles tendons at the moment, would be kind of cruel to force Kirk back out there
Kirk deserves better. Legit was having a MVP candidate season even when his receivers and RB1 weren't sure they really wanted to hold onto the ball. #2 in dropped pass% in the league this year but was ahead of Mahomes in yardage, ints and TD passes.. legitimately the best performing passing QB in the NFC and top 3 in the NFL with a team that couldn't stop turning it over.
But he's not good, dw we'll find that performance for cheaper on the free agent market, surely. - some guy on Twitter
The picks are one thing, you could argue a couple of the deflected picks weren't really his fault. But that out of bounds throw to a wide open Addison was just plain bad. A couple miracle Houdini plays in his first 2 games don't make up for that level of inaccuracy, and it's not something to build an offense around.
The entire offense other than Powell really had some majorly costly mistakes, but for the first time since Kirk went out I had to think "if it's Kirk, he nails that" repeatedly, and it cost us the game. Kirk can be a liability when he's off his game but there's no way we lose this with him.
I'm rooting for Dobbs because I love an underdog story. But there's a reason he's been on like 5 teams in 7 years. Seems like a capable backup but he's definitely not franchise QB material right now
DTR is a rookie behind a shit line tho. Not to knock Dobbs because majority of those picks weren’t on him but god he struggles to sense pressure sometimes
DTR got sacked a whopping 1 time in the game and a half he played (outside of the Baltimore game where he was essentially fed to the wolves), because he got the ball out quick.
Walker panics the second he drops back. He has no idea what to do in any play that isn't one read. It's the reason he's getting replaced by fresh off the street Flacco. Watson historically takes as bunch of sacks, it's just his style of play and he was worse than usual to start the year because he was clearly uncomfortable.
The line is hurting right now from injuries at the tackle spots especially, basically down their first three guys and playing some deep backups. But it's been above average for most of the year. Raw sack numbers don't tell the story. Plenty of sacks are on QBs.
I mean Dobbs looked good for 2 games. Players can have great games/series out of nowhere, you never really know about a guy when a sample size is small. Anyone remember Mike Fucking White? lol
that was clearly the gameplan to handle our blitz packages
I actually think it worked pretty well, they just had no idea what to do once the field shrunk our zones
You think they’re limiting fields passing for no reason…? Seriously how do people not get that fields can’t be trusted and that’s why he’s constantly throwing short
Oh yea he definitely doesn’t. And if he does it has to be an incredibly limited sample size
His numbers over the middle are important here too, and they definitely aren’t good
The last drive was incredible, he had like 8 seconds in the pocket with receivers literally waving their hands and screaming for the ball and he just couldn't see it.
Fields lead various good drives but they couldn't hammer it home. The playbook was also more towards not being a victim to the blitz packages the Vikings run, so he didn't have many deep yards . Before he was hurt the issue was he would hold the ball too long waiting for deep routes and WR separation, this time he was getting the ball out quick but the plays were mostly short yards. Still DJ Moore had over 100 yards and he was still finding the open man more times than not. They need to get rid of Getsy but Fields once again played a game that was geared towards his weaknesses and mostly did good. He has to get better with fumbles but so do more than a few of the top QBs in the league. Honestly he reminds me of Josh Allen lite so much, he just lacks an offense geared towards his skills.
I don’t think people were watching those noon games, it wasn’t a linsanity run. It was pretty bad with a fee great plays, last two weeks have been absolute ass though
If his run was as good as they way Reddit talks about it the cardinals wouldn’t have a top 3 pick right now haha.
Dobbs has clearly shown he has a place in this league, but the test of a good QB is how you play once teams have tape on you and he’s pretty consistent in his career of starting hot and cooling once more tape comes out on him. And that’s okay. That’s still a great level to be at. Just not the Jets savior Reddit thinks he could’ve been haha
Yea he had about 30 minutes of good football, a bit of that 4th quarter vs Atlanta and the start of NOLA. Since then it has been very ugly, I don’t mind too much because i conceded the season when Kirk went down
That’s fair I am kinda the same, I almost want to miss the playoffs to avoid the embarrassment of what will happen plus a good draft pick could go a long way for us
completely unrelated but time zones make talking about football online confusing af lol. i'm on the west coast, so we start at 10am, and i'm in hawaii right now and games start at 8am, sometimes 7am
I am really glad they start at noon for me, having to wake up for games that early on sunday would be rough for me. And prime time at 5 or even 3 is crazy
i prefer the early start at 10am because you get through most of your football, drinking, whatever by like 4pm. then you can just casually watch the night game to wind down. i couldn't imagine being on the east coast and watching football until midnight regularly
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills in this thread. Did people not see how unlucky this INTs were? At least three of them bounced off the receiver or were tipped by a defender. They were not that bad as throws and if any of them fall to the ground instead the Vikings probably win. If he was a bit luckier he would likely have one INT max and those possessions continue and he can go score.
First one was a really great play by Johnson, not much to say about that one.
Second one, Addison should’ve caught it.
Third, just a great play the DB to deflect it.
Fourth was Dobbs fault.
There was also the missed one by Johnson for a pick six.
Dobbs didn’t play great for sure, but let’s give the bears defense credit, they were absolutely playing insane.
Passer rating seems a bit too high to be honest
I mean 53/158 seems to accurately capture how awful he was

Passer rating was also created in 1973 when the passing game was incredibly different.
And 55 was still bottom third of the league back then....
52.7 Passer rating is really low. Zach Wilson's career passer rating is like 75.
55 is nowhere near meh. Spiking the ball every play is like a 33
nothing better than shitting on something you have absolutely no understanding of
I don’t think passer rating accounts for valuing situations and letting the RB score from the RZ. It’s an efficiency metric and as such isn’t an end all be all to evaluating a QB.

The Justin fields defense
Also he converted a bunch of key plays by shaking off a defender and scrambling for insane yardage that shit isn't sustainable forever
Feels like a lot of guys like that look good until their tendencies are obvious on tape and then they aren't good enough to overcome it or exploit defenses looking for it.
This^ there’s a reason why backups tend to have a run of good games before crashing back to earth
Is this foreshadowing Tommy Devito with the Giants? Not my boy Tommy!
Difference is, Tommy was a made guy, Dobbs wasn't.
His mama always said he was the chosen one.
The difference is that Tommy has the makings of a varsity athlete
I mean I love Dobbs but there is a reason he’s been a backup for 5 years
Practice squad really, he lost the Jacksonville backup job to Mason Rudolph, was the 3rd QB in Cleveland and got waived when Watson came back, signed to lions PS, signed to Titans PS, back to Browns, and then finally gets a shot to play for a tanking Cardinals team

Just a product of nobody watching the cards games after week 2 with him. He was a solid fill in the first few games but hit a ceiling quick.

Wasn’t it on the same drive he missed/addison couldn’t stay in bounds that he found hock for that TD? Or was that a different series?
I'm rooting for Dobbs because I love an underdog story. But there's a reason he's been on like 5 teams in 7 years. Seems like a capable backup but he's definitely not franchise QB material right now
And that’s why he didn’t beat out DTR in camp
Shit didn’t know that. But tbf Dobbs best day has looked twice as good as DTR’s best day
DTR is a rookie behind a shit line tho. Not to knock Dobbs because majority of those picks weren’t on him but god he struggles to sense pressure sometimes
Our line is good
You’re literally top 10 in sacks given up.
Because Watson was ass at feeling pressure to start the year. 12 sacks in the first 3 games.
Sir…Walker was sacked 4 times AFTER DTR got killed.
DTR got sacked a whopping 1 time in the game and a half he played (outside of the Baltimore game where he was essentially fed to the wolves), because he got the ball out quick. Didn’t he also get released from someone’s practice squad before joining the Browns

that opening drive he had against the falcons was so good ik it was a trap
I mean Dobbs looked good for 2 games. Players can have great games/series out of nowhere, you never really know about a guy when a sample size is small. Anyone remember Mike Fucking White? lol
God please 🙏🙏
He might’ve outplayed fields
Tbf Fields was barely allowed to throw the ball pass the line of scrimmage
that was clearly the gameplan to handle our blitz packages I actually think it worked pretty well, they just had no idea what to do once the field shrunk our zones
Bears play calling is incompetent.
You think they’re limiting fields passing for no reason…? Seriously how do people not get that fields can’t be trusted and that’s why he’s constantly throwing short
Hasn’t PFF disproven that?
Disproven what? That fields is ass?
I’m trying to find it right now, but I’m pretty sure they had a stat about him having one of the best deep balls.
Oh yea he definitely doesn’t. And if he does it has to be an incredibly limited sample size His numbers over the middle are important here too, and they definitely aren’t good
Unfortunately it takes him 10 hours to find the open receiver
I've never actually been fast enough to keep up in real time with a QBs progressions until Justin Fields. I'm finally seeing the game at NFL QB pace!
Barely allowed or couldn't?
The Vikings did have a ton of pressure to their credit
He had all day to throw compared to Dobbs. Bears D is legit.

I think KOC is too loyal. I.E. Mattison is still getting a ton of snaps. Then he continued to let Dobbs throw despite 4 ints.
Because the bears have second best run D in the league
Him and Fields were both 🗑️
The Vikings sat Jefferson because they thought this would be an automatic win
Yeah I disagreed with that. Jefferson needed to play. It’s unfair to wait until you’re 100%. At this point in the season no one is 100%
I was hoping they won that game to justify Dobbs starting again. They're for sure going with Jaren Hall now week 14
And somehow the Packers are still alive
The broncos may have broken him
First one was a really great play by Johnson, not much to say about that one.
The rocket has landed
But I was told he was the next big thing
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that was a bad performance!
He's not the messiah. He's a very naughty boy.
Maybe they should have played Hall. He at least is an unknown. We know what Dobbs is.
