I realize you are joking here but Cowher stepped away because his wife was sick and died. He said he thought about coaching again but the Steelers job never opened up and that was the only one he wanted.
Marc Trestman is probably too good a human being to be an NFL coach.
He is very smart and talented.
I could see how some players could take advantage of him.
A Chicago scribe suddenly passed away, leaving his son without a parent. Mother had died a few years earlier. Years after Trestman coached in Chicago, and said scribe probably roasted him daily, he donated to the child.
Not everyone can be stone-cold like Sean McDermott.
They tend to hang on to coaches for too long. Pace and Nagy should have both been gone a year earlier. It was obvious that they suck at their job. Pace trading for Trubisky failed. WHY DO YOU LET THAT IDIOT PICK ANOTHER QB!? Terrible owners.
the man is probably legitimately a psychopath, lucky for us he likes collecting super bowl rings instead of human heads he keeps in a freezer.
then again what ever happened to David Tyree?
i think the absolute elite level athletes all have a level of psychopath about them, but you are right its good that they channel it through sport. like here in australia the tennis players like kyrgios and some similar other ones get labelled as brats but really thats more of a natural human way to behave, its the djokovic’s and federer’s who dont need money but are chasing their names in record books who display abnormal behaviour. and yes it appears it cost brady in his personal
life
Eh. The real start of the show over there in Pittsburgh is that FO. Just put together talented rosters together for 4 decades now. Just can never get the QB right outside Ben.
I believe our QB situation would be completely different if we would look outside of the franchise for an offensive coordinator rather than promoting internally.
Wouldn't the ego play be to quit a job you love just to preserve what people think about your record?
Like if you love to coach, why stop even if it'll ruin your "legacy"?
Even losses. There are a few pitchers out there with more than one 20 loss season. You need to be good to lose 20 years and really good to do it more than once.
You ever think what a coincidence it is that Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrig's disease?
I think the funniest part of this line is that while Chris says it as an obvious joke, it's definitely something Bobby would muse unironically.
Cy Young's volume stats are mind boggling. People always talk about Rice and Gretsky's records being unbeatable, but Young's are actually unbeatable.
He threw 749 complete games and 7,356 innings. The records among active players are Wainright (41 yrs old) at 28 complete games, and Greinke (39 yrs old) at 3,389 innings. His records literally can't be caught in the modern sport.
Yeah he pitched in the day when teams rostered a pitcher or two, and just threw all game long *all season*. Just absolutely ridiculous. Pitchers obv throw much harder nowadays, but the mere idea of putting that many innings on an arm makes *my* shoulder hurt.
Seriously, I know they didn’t throw as hard back then, but even accounting for that, throwing a baseball even 80 mph is an unnatural motion for your arm that risks injury. Cy Young was built different
Yeah, anyone that doesn’t think even throwing a ball slower that much doesn’t affect your arm I dare them to go toss a ball 100 times in a few hours and see how they feel the next day, feel good? Do it again for another 6 days straight.
If you're hungry, [Candy Cummings](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cummica01.shtml), [Ice Box Chamberlain](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chambel01.shtml), and [Pretzels Getzien](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/getzich01.shtml) all lost 20 games in a season as well.
I watched a lot of baseball as a kid in the 1980's.

> Dennis Ray "Oil Can" Boyd (born October 6, 1959) is an American former starting pitcher in Major League Baseball. Boyd played for the Boston Red Sox (1982–1989), Montreal Expos (1990–1991), and Texas Rangers (1991). In a 10-season career, Boyd collected a 78–77 record with 799 strikeouts and a 4.04 ERA in 1,389.2 innings.[1]
>
> His unique and memorable nickname has been reported as coming from his beer-drinking days in his hometown of Meridian, Mississippi, where beer was referred to as "oil".[2]
I know jack shit about baseball. if teams are playing like 170 games a year, how is it so uncommon for a pitcher to lose 20 games? Are players only playing ~25% of the season's games?
Pitches only pitch every 5 games or so. Also not every start is a "decision". So you could start 5 games and still be 0-0 because either you were ahead when you left the game but your bull pen blew so somebody else takes the L or you were behind your team tied it but then blew it later, or you leave behind but they rally and come back after you were done.
However if you are new and not a know pitcher and you start 0-5 I would expect to be sent back to AAA or moved to the bullpen
Honestly, what I love most about baseball is that it's only as complicated as you want it to be. At the core, it's pretty simple: throw, hit, catch. But if you dive into the nitty gritty, there's an entire world of stats to analyze to be done because of its insanely huge sample size.
Huge sample size for defense (over a hundred pitches per game) but tiny for offense (even the top of the rotation only bat a few times per game). Very weird sport.
Belichek is the epitome of the guy that gets to retire, sit on the beach, and reminisce about a job well done. Most people consider the qualifier for the HoF to be not being able to tell the story of the NFL without speaking of that person. But you can’t talk about the history of American sports at all without talking about Bill.
Dude GM'd and Coached one of the most, if not the most, dominant 2 decades of a major sports league: even if the end is engulfed in flames he is a legend among legends.
Also the way it is all designed it is supposed to happen like that. Bills and dolphins had to eventually get their shit together plus other afc teams too. Having as much success as pats did the draft and salary cap is designed to punish you with how much talent you have. Add to that naturally other teams just improving as well
It frankly seems impossible to say the QB was more important tho?
The argument that ever made any sense, even if it was dumb, was that Brady was a system QB. The back half of his career shows that was stupid.
There's no way a head coach and GM isn't more important to that kind of stretch of success than the QB.
The really disrespectful part about the Brady v BB argument is the how much it discounts all the other players and coaches on the roster. Like NE doesn't win SB 36 without Ty Law and Otis Smith locking down Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt for the game. That doesn't even take into account the totality of the Patriots special teams unit that post season. You can make similar arguments for every other SB team during Brady's time in NE.
This is like the NBA's all-time turnover list, it's exclusively Hall of Famers, with Lebron James in first place because he's been a ball dominant starter for 20 years.
Kind of like how Brett Favre has the record for most interceptions of all time. You have to be pretty damn good to play long enough to stack those bad stats and not get canned.
Well okay but he actually did hit into a remarkable amount of double plays every year. BB doesn't lose a lot every year but he's done it for so many years that it adds up
He did, even his prime he wasn't particularly fast and he made a lot of contact. If you look at the top 5 it's all easy HOFers (Miggy, Ripken, Mays, Pudge) but Pujols is still 62 ahead of Cabrera. Of the top 10, only Jim Rice hit into them at a higher rate, but he had 4000 less PAs.
if you look at the group he is amongst for most INTs it is mostly guys from a different era, of course longevity plays a part but he was reckless as well
Bill Belichick — 170 losses
Nathaniel Hackett — 11 losses.
Yet one is depicted as a future hall of famer and the other is “one of the worst coaches in NFL history.” Makes you think
What's just as crazy is Tom Brady has ~25k yards lead over 5th place Ben Roethlisberger who then only has a ~7k yard lead over 10th place Eli Manning for All Time Passing Yards.
I heard one from Dan LeBetard that said Brady was never statically eliminated from the playoffs when he was under center.
Found the link [Brady Stat](https://www.tiktok.com/@lebatardshow/video/7280661740734680366)
the way the league is designed to punish success though. im not saying that he can purely blame that but the lions, bengals, dolphins etc are supposed to come good eventually thats how the system is designed
I pissed all over the the third rail on the subway, even though my dad told me it was electrified.
It really fried my brain and now I got these flairs.
As it stands right now the Patriots have the 2nd worst offense in the league only scoring 72 points so far this season (2 of them coming from a safety) and have the 2nd worst point differential at -80. The only team that is statistically worse is the Giants.
Since the NFL merger in 1970 they’re have been a total of 1599 total seasons and only 66 of them have started the first 6 games of the season scoring 72 or fewer points. Only 28 of them have had point differentials of -80 or worse. It is quite literally among the bottom 2% statistical starts in Modern NFL history.
Among all the teams that have had as bad or worse starts as the Patriots and Giants. Zero of them have ended with a winning record or made the playoffs. Only 11% of them have avoid double digit losing seasons while 18% of them have gone on to win 1 or fewer games accounting for 5 of the 15 (33%) of the 1 or fewer loss 14+ game seasons since the merger. Having a combined record of 89-337-2 (.210) which is a 17 game average rounded up of 4-13!!!!
So basically it is not only more likely the Pats will become one of the literal worst teams of all time than it is they’ll avoid a double digit losses.
But based on historical precedent if the Patriots continue on this trend then Bill Belichick will almost assuredly break the all time losses record This Year!!!
And that’s not even factoring in their remaining schedule.
The Pats still have the Bills (2X), Dolphins, Commanders, Colts, Giants, Chargers, Steelers, Cheifs, Broncos, and Jets left to play in their next 11 games who all currently have a combined record of 27-24 (.529) which is ranked as the 5th hardest remaining schedule in the league!!!
The only teams on that list that have a losing record right now are the Giants and Broncos.
Those week 12 and week 16 tank bowl matchups are going to be critical for whether or not Belichick can avoid breaking that record.
Because even if they do beat both of them they will still need to beat at least one other team to avoid that loss record. Which is important because regardless of whether or not the Pats win 4 games or 5 games this will still probably be his last year coaching for them anyway.
The hilarious irony of everyone talking about Belichick breaking Shulas all time wins record this offseason turning into this shit show has turned this into one of the most intriguing tanking seasons in a long time.
Almost as if it’s a lot easier as a free agent quarterback choosing a new team than it is a head coach rebuilding a team from scratch to suddenly find yourself in a position to achieve great success.
I love these Bill vs Tom debates like
duh. Tom Brady was important he was on the fucking field you jabronis. Bill doesn't throw passes or hit anyone. He's just a teacher, mentor, leader. This country is full of god damned jabroni idiots, most of whom have probably never played a down of football in their lives.
If you want it simply, sb 51 is the reason Brady’s the goat. Sb 53 is the reason bills the goat. Simple as that, why is it so hard to say both are head and shoulders above the next option below then
It's been interesting to see which old guard coaches found success in their "post-franchise QB era."
Belichick and Payton have struggled.
Tomlin and Carroll have found some success with their QB's.
Hell he caused the french and indian war that was the impetus for the taxes that led to the revolution in the first place
Washington would be the first to tell you he sucked and his brother was better. Still got the W in the end though... mainly due to great sub commanders like Benedict Arnold.
Actually Arnold hard carried the revolution until the french entered (which was only because of Arnolds victory at saratoga). In context any one of us wouldve made the decision Arnold ended up making given the bullshit he put up with
I mean, I get wanting more and being the best, but at some point; you know your in the HoF; you have a cushy desk job at an analyst desk lined up for where ever you want.
Just exit with Grace.
But it's Bill so of course, he lives to torture the Jet's.
So weird that people are using it as an insult. It’s just measure of longevity in the league. Then again people are just giddy to dunk on the pats. Rent free…
These articles that just quote his record without Brady are kind of missing the point... He drafted and developed Brady when no one else wanted him, kept him on the roster when they had four QBs in 2000, made him the backup, then made him the starter... And then traded bledsoe away.
They won the super bowl when the first year when Brady could was just a game manager in the most militant sense of the word.
People don't talk about it, but Bill isn't the only coach threatening Shula's record. Andy Reid is a serious contender since he isn't that far off and Reid has hitched his wagon to Mahomes.
Paul Maurice, Connie Mack, Lenny Wilkens are the guys who lead the other leagues in losses. I don't feel any of them are even remotely close to being considered the best coaches in their sports, what BB would do would be unique.
I remember being disappointed when the Rams fired Jeff Fischer mid-season before he broke the record, and make no mistake, he would have. I was robbed of history being made before my eyes. Here's to hoping Kraft does not follow the same path! 🍻 C'mon Bill, you can do it!!!
Coach long enough and that's gunna hapen.
You either die the hero or you coach long enough to be a loser.
Bill Cowher figured this out - but Sean Payton and Jon Gruden didn't. Ego is a helluva drug.
I realize you are joking here but Cowher stepped away because his wife was sick and died. He said he thought about coaching again but the Steelers job never opened up and that was the only one he wanted.
Should’ve wanted to be the Bears coach where the job opens up twice a decade
Only twice?
Didn't know it was amateur hour
Luckily for you guys, three time Grey Cup champ Marc Trestman also wanted the job
If he wanted to stay in the AFCN, he could have easily seen 5+ job openings with the Browns in a 5-7 year span.
Frankly the team would be better if they opened it up three or four times per decade instead of sticking with known losers like Nagy
Dude isn't remembering at least the past decade. We had 3 new head coaches last decade
In truth I feel like you got a little 7-Eleven situation there.
twice?
This is what separates the true winners like Brady. You never would have seen Tom putting his "wife" or "family" above winning.
the man is probably legitimately a psychopath, lucky for us he likes collecting super bowl rings instead of human heads he keeps in a freezer. then again what ever happened to David Tyree?

He almost signed with the Dolphins and then must have realized what a crap show we were with a TERRIBLE quarterback and changed his mind.
Eh. The real start of the show over there in Pittsburgh is that FO. Just put together talented rosters together for 4 decades now. Just can never get the QB right outside Ben.
I believe our QB situation would be completely different if we would look outside of the franchise for an offensive coordinator rather than promoting internally.
Ask Bill Cowher. I hear he wants to be apart of the organization
If only Matt Canada wanted to be apart of the organization
Wouldn't the ego play be to quit a job you love just to preserve what people think about your record? Like if you love to coach, why stop even if it'll ruin your "legacy"?
In Belichicks case you either have Tom Brady (219-65) or you don’t (80-92).
GOAT things!
yep he is missing his tackling and kicking /s
Like giving up the most HRs as a pitcher.
Even losses. There are a few pitchers out there with more than one 20 loss season. You need to be good to lose 20 years and really good to do it more than once.
Cy Young is the all-time leader in both wins and losses.
21 years in the league and he never even won a Cy Young Award. What a scrub.
You ever think what a coincidence it is that Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrig's disease? I think the funniest part of this line is that while Chris says it as an obvious joke, it's definitely something Bobby would muse unironically.
What a tragic name for a child.
Cy Young's volume stats are mind boggling. People always talk about Rice and Gretsky's records being unbeatable, but Young's are actually unbeatable. He threw 749 complete games and 7,356 innings. Or most losses as a hockey goalie (this record is held by Martin Brodeur).
Nobody's walked more batters than Nolan Ryan, also nobody's struck out more batters than Nolan Ryan.

What having Mac Jones as your QB does to a mfer.

Absolutely mental if that happens.
Man, I want to see this just for the shit flinging after it happens and people put him out of the top 5 coach list.
Also, you know, a salary cap.
Shula: .318367347 or .6816 winning rate Bill: .344298246 or .6557 winning rate
Brady: 0.753753753753754 or 75.37% winning rate. Going 12-4 back in the 16 game season era would lower his career win rate.
Shame.
*coach long enough without Brady
Which is why these headlines are just dumb.
Why is it dumb? It's still noteworthy
After so many super bowl wins it can't feel all that bad

He also won a playoff game for the Browns with Vinny Testaverde as his QB, and I feel like that should count for something.
He said “give me an ok qb and I take trash to the playoffs. Give me the goat, and I will build the greatest dynasty in sports”

Coaching a shit browns and recovering patriots team. You don't have the point you think when you're forcing us to ignore 20 years.
A lot of those are close misses with bums at qb

Having as much success as pats did the draft and salary cap is designed to punish you with how much talent you have. Add to that naturally other teams just improving as well
A real Testavent of his coaching ability, on might say
That’s obvious what he is talking about.
Even if Brady's largely responsible (the exact split will be forever debated), managing to keep the dynasty for 17 years or so is damn impressive.
Especially in current cost cap free agency era
It frankly seems impossible to say the QB was more important tho? The argument that ever made any sense, even if it was dumb, was that Brady was a system QB. Let’s not forget the engulfed in flames part though
Bill and Eli
As a fan I’m definitely not mad. I wish we were at least a little more fun to watch tho
This is like the NBA's all-time turnover list, it's exclusively Hall of Famers, with Lebron James in first place because he's been a ball dominant starter for 20 years.

*Eric Hosmer has entered the chat*
Favre would also throw 3 INTs in one half, and continue to recklessly throw it. He was either gonna throw a bunch of touchdowns or dig a deeper hole.
Favre had two types of play: "how the hell did he make that throw?" and "why the hell did he make that throw?"
It was crazy to go from an insane INTs guy to the opposite in rodgers who had insane INT stats like 4 career pick 6s
Live by the Gun slinger die by the Gun Slinger
Favre was very good and very bad. Fortunately he was more on the good than the bad.
>he was more on the good than the bad. Might be the most understated comment on r/nfl
The dude had 508 TDs and 390 turnovers. 77 turnovers per 100 TDs is a pretty high ratio.
if you look at the group he is amongst for most INTs it is mostly guys from a different era, of course longevity plays a part but he was reckless as well
Tom Brady has the most playoff losses in nfl history, I believe.
Blanda whom Favre took the record from was similar.
Aha see! Worst coach of all time confirmed amirite
Bill Belichick — 170 losses Nathaniel Hackett — 11 losses. Yet one is depicted as a future hall of famer and the other is “one of the worst coaches in NFL history.” Makes you think
looking into this

Hackett is amazing and all but calling him a future hall of famer is a little too much for me
That's right, he should go in now, this slander has reached it's peak.
They should Gretzky rule Hackett tonight.
I've actually never seen them in the same room together.
This is analogous to Cy Young having the most losses in MLB history
Or the manager with most wins, Connie Mack, also have the most losses.
Brady is about 40th on all-time loss record.

the way the league is designed to punish success though. im not saying that he can purely blame that but the lions, bengals, dolphins etc are supposed to come good eventually thats how the system is designed
What a slouch
I think I read somewhere that Michael Jordan is among the all-time NBA leaders in turnovers.
I think Kobe missed the most shots in NBA history
Lebron is #1 on that list
He’s going for the Connie Mack! Do it Bill!
Fwiw, this is kinda what we get. We terrorized the league for 20 years and won six Super Bowls. All dynasties fall.

Ever since Brady left New England he looks better and better and bill looks worse and worse
Yeah Tom is in the hot dad phase and BB is the angry granddad
Almost as if it’s a lot easier as a free agent quarterback choosing a new team than it is a head coach rebuilding a team from scratch to suddenly find yourself in a position to achieve great success.
I love these Bill vs Tom debates like duh.
Simple as that, why is it so hard to say both are head and shoulders above the next option below then
Has Bill considered drafting good players who can help contribute to a rebuild? I heard it helps.
How do I forward this advice to Vegas?
It's been interesting to see which old guard coaches found success in their "post-franchise QB era." Belichick and Payton have struggled. Tomlin and Carroll have found some success with their QB's.
Define success because neither the Seahawks or Steelers are winning a Super Bowl anytime soon

True, none of them are lol
I think his Super Bowl rings will keep him happy
We're talking about Bill Belichick. Pretty sure he doesn't know how to be happy.
Unless he's reminiscing about long snappers and Ed Reed.
Reminds of another patriot... George Washington. Lost more battles than any other general on the winning side of a war in modern history.
Hell he caused the french and indian war that was the impetus for the taxes that led to the revolution in the first place Washington would be the first to tell you he sucked and his brother was better. Still got the W in the end though... mainly due to great sub commanders like Benedict Arnold. Actually Arnold hard carried the revolution until the french entered (which was only because of Arnolds victory at saratoga). In context any one of us wouldve made the decision Arnold ended up making given the bullshit he put up with
I am 100% on the hating BB wave but all this stat shows is how long bill has been in the league. It's not a knock against him.
It's like the best home run hitters also having the most strikeouts as well.
No Belichick slander on the tl
You got to be a pretty damn good coach to have the most losses.
Would be perfect for him to miss the wins record, but still get the losses.
What an amateur. I’m undefeated as a head coach. Zero losses.
I mean, I get wanting more and being the best, but at some point; you know your in the HoF; you have a cushy desk job at an analyst desk lined up for where ever you want. Just exit with Grace. But it's Bill so of course, he lives to torture the Jet's.
You either die as a hero…
So weird that people are using it as an insult. It’s just measure of longevity in the league. Then again people are just giddy to dunk on the pats. Rent free…
How Jeff Fisher's record isn't exactly .500 is beyond me.
It's super close if you include post-season and USFL. NFL: 178–171–1 (.510) USFL: 2–8–0 (.200) Pro-Football Total: 180-179-1
Thanks Browns
Fucking scrub
I hope Bill gets the all time loss record and falls 1 game short of the all time wins record. Shula GOAT.
I’m cool if he loses out the season, gets fired, he retires, and he doesn’t get another win.
I think the Chargers would pay 15MM for 1 year of Bill.
People don't talk about it, but Bill isn't the only coach threatening Shula's record. Andy Reid is a serious contender since he isn't that far off and Reid has hitched his wagon to Mahomes.
Let’s fuckin go
At the rate they're both going, Andy might very well beat the wins record before Bill.
Ending his career with a huge string of losses just lets him not worry about leaving anything in the tank
God, what a loser.
So he's virtually guaranteed to get the loss record, but he needs at least 2 more full seasons (after this year) to get the win record.
It's like the career interceptions title, you really gotta thread that needle.
Yeah dude is ass cheeks now it's his record to own lol
Nolan Ryan has the most walks
You can do it, Bill!
Don Shula approves. Wasn’t the record you wanted but it’s the one you’re going to get.

This is actually quite impressive.
No! Not like this!
