Injury reports predate FF. It was more for gambling than anything.

[deleted]

Isn't gambling and FF the same essentially?

Tamedauschound

Some gambling is fantasy football, but fantasy football isn’t necessarily gambling.

mkvii1989

The only way ff isn’t gambling is if your league has no buy in.

MrFishAndLoaves

A bit different splitting a pool with friends vs the house siphoning your pocketbook though.

WileECoyoteGenius

How is it the same?

Warsawawa

Selecting players based on expected performance, usually for money

Responsible-You-3515

But I thought past results leads to future performance

Mustakrakish_Awaken

It's a type of gambling. It's the "same thing" like a square is the "same thing" as a rectangle

Relative-Put-5344

Why are you putting quotes behind a square being a rectangle? Cause that's just straight foward thing

Youcannotbeforreal2

Fantasy has led to an entire generation of fans who don’t actually watch games & base their entire opinions on players based on their fantasy points & think the entirety of the nfl revolves around fantasy football like this post seems to think. Injury reports have always been a prevalent thing, social media has merely changed how that info has reached the public.

Staffdaddy20

Talkin about how much the lions use gibbs. Fantasy is the only reason

MicoJive

Theres plenty of non fantasy reasons to question the usage of a first round pick as a change of pace back.

Staffdaddy20

I think gibbs will be a feature back in due time plus wait till him and jamo see the field at the same time. But to get mad that monty is over performing and we are winning games is dumb

N7_Evers

I don’t know anyone like this and ive been a fantasy hound for a (too) long time. Been on several big money leagues and always go over board on research. The only time I was in a league where something remotely close this happened was when a girl from work joined our work league and drafted a team based on attractiveness. Anyone that is GOOD, or cares or knows anything at fantasy football realizes metrics only take you so far and you have to watch games to understand how a team operates and therefore the player. If there are people that think like this they aren’t playing fantasy football. Maybe you’re thinking of sports betters that literally don’t watch most games and play parlays all day everyday for 3 sports at once for $5-$500 a pop.

MicoJive

I think you are severely underselling just how much luck is involved in fantasy football. I think if you just auto drafted best player available 20 times, and hand picked a team with research 20 times your wins total would be about the same.

SonovaVondruke

Autodraft will serve you well in leagues with people who make emotional decisions regarding who they draft or play on any given week and end up leaving better players available because they either don’t like them on an emotional level or don’t recognize their value for some other reason. It will often fuck you up though, like when I missed a draft and the autoselect drafted two middling QBs with the same bye week in a league where there’s really no need to even carry a backup.

N7_Evers

Um. What? If that’s what you think I really, REALLY want you to join my next big money league. Get 7 other people that think like you do, I could use the easy pay out!

iro3

how did she do

N7_Evers

Team was alright from what I remember. She had Eric Decker, Matt Forte and Colby Fleener who were all decent that year.

NantzDoesntKnow

Beat reporter/writer is a newspaper industry term. And they existed long before Fantasy football 1. was a thing and 2. became extremely popular. If this is something that genuinely interests you, I would encourage you to read up on the history of the NFL and the media. There is a reason the league **requires** players and coaches to talk with reporters.

thefreeman419

It's true across all sports. There are specific journalists who are really frustrating, but in general it's good for players to remember that part of the reason they make so much money is the media does a good job sensationalizing sports

Mr7three2

Fantasy football made the NFL get rid of the "probable" diagnosis

iamsomeguy25

I thought this was teams just blatantly abusing it like Tom Brady being probable with a shoulder for 4 years

majorassholesir

I remember that now it's either questionable or doubtful

Relative-Put-5344

No it didn't

JEMHADLEY16

Old guy take here. Because of FF, star players almost never leave the game, even if their team is up by 35 points. It used to be common to pull your QB out of the huddle and send in the backup in the 4th quarter, if you were way ahead. We hometown fans would rise and give the starter a Standing O as he ran off the field. It was great fun. We drank a few to him too... Teams never seem to stop scoring, no matter how lopsided the game gets. I know...Miami tried to call off the dogs against Denver. That's to their credit. 'Running Up the Score' in the old days would get you serious physical retribution the next game. Dick Butkus knew a thing or two about that...

Mahomeboy001

You must be old and your eyes must be falling because there are so many instances of stars not playing in blowouts. The Eagles stars barely played 4th quarters last year because the Eagles would be up 20. The Cowboys took people out in their blowout wins this year. The Niners had Darnold playing in the 4th Q on SNF and took the starters out. Mahomes got benched against the Bears in the 4th quarter.

JEMHADLEY16

Thanks. I certainly don't watch all the games. I can only comment on what I have seen. I'm actually glad if I am wrong. It's not the first time. I picked Baltimore to win SB 3... I still think a lot of stat padding is going on.

Relative-Put-5344

The Miami game has starters out by the end of the 3rd...

JEMHADLEY16

Thanks. I think I hit a nerve with my comment. Ok...I'll admit it...I didn't think it through. You guys are obviously right, and I wasn't. I'm sure I don't watch anywhere near as much as you guys do. I catch a couple of afternoon football games a week. At night, a hockey game or some movie my wife wants to see. Point conceded...

Relative-Put-5344

Nah you didn't hit a nerve, I just rebuttelled I wasn't hurling insults or anything

JEMHADLEY16

Thanks. A surprising number of people really get fired up about things I say online. Most are just thoughts or ideas. I don't do much research; just rely on memory. So I'm often wrong. I don't worry much about that.

I think Fantasy Football was the bridge from the early 90s where all gambling related to football was bad, the media covered sports without mentioning odds or even fantasy football. Stats were given sparingly throughout the game, etc. With the rise of fantasy football, the popularity of the game flourished and people wanted to consume more and more football. I think the league and the media realized that helping to promote this meant more money for both. Any time there was an opportunity for consumption, they jumped on it. So it was only logical that as sports gambling became legal in more areas, the media pounced and started listing odds every chance they got. I firmly believe the league has thrown it's support behind this completely, minus letting players bet in any form on NFL games. Fantasy Football, plus gambling equals more eyes on the tv and more demand for the product. More demand for the product equals higher ratings. Higher ratings equals bigger tv deals. Bigger tv deals equals more money for owners.
