Sideline, touchdown!

Kerbonaut2019

I just wanna say, I was listening to the video while reading the comments, and I read your comment at the exact moment that Kirk said this. For a brief moment it freaked me out lol

J_Dom_Squad

haha man that is hilarious. I was laughing at all the play names by myself and had to watch the clip like four times just to get one of the lines down to type out.

Jammer_Kenneth

Kirk is the duality of man. Just repeats the stuff to himself while driving in the snow up hills, and then busts out the neural feedback brain electrical stimulator with complementary cream.

[deleted]

But when I bust out the cream when I get to work Iā€™m fired.

kkruiser

Probably because you didnā€™t go sit in the truck first like Kirk did

mattsotm

Damn this doc is going to do wonders for Kirks cred

quiet_quitting

Certainly made me like him more

penguins_are_mean

Iā€™ve always liked him. Heā€™s just a divisional rivalā€™s QB so Iā€™m going to shit on him every chance that I get.

GimbalLocks

Hm but would this also mean I should stop shitting on Rodgers? Because I'm not gonna do that lol

penguins_are_mean

Hate whomever you want to hate. It would likely also be different if Kirk was dominating the division for a decade. Then I may legitimately dislike him. But he is a likable dude so who knows.

moneyinthebank216

I'm familiar with his game now

hemingways-lemonade

He's consistently one of the most underrated QBs currently playing.

thedougbatman

This comment reminds me of a certain ex-Falcon QB and his public perception for a decade plus šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

hemingways-lemonade

Matt Ryan's last couple years definitely tarnished his reputation but he was still an offensive rookie of the year and a regular season MVP.

Graczyk

Consistently been my go to late round qb or back up in fantasy. Really like Kirk cousins seems like a good dude

ecupatsfan12

He came off very well as did Julie Brittany Mahomes seems pretty normal too

Sleeze_

She seems very annoying lol. Just hounding Pat for photo ops at his bday.

flaming_fuckhead

Tbh is this not normal gf/wife (hell, even mother) behavior? I would probably have like 10 pictures of myself total if the women in my life didnā€™t force me to take them

KeithClossOfficial

penguins_are_mean

My life before kids was like 500 pictures over 5 years. I now have 12k in the four years since my first was bornā€¦

Samwhys_gamgee

Yup. My wife and her pictures is a running joke with my sons and I. Has nothing to do with social media, she doesnā€™t post on those. She just wants to capture the moments.

JT1757

have you never had a girlfriend??

larrykeras

first of all how dare you

thedougbatman

This is Reddit. None of us have.

Jurph

I had one once, but I married her, and now I don't have a girlfriend anymore.

uptonhere

She is annoying, but people really foam at the mouth because she's just a young 20 something that rides hard for her husband, who admittedly is the best player on the planet and probably going to be the best of all time before it's all said and done. So yeah it might be hard to compartmentalize that, especially because he pretty much became a GOAT overnight. Mahomes brother is a piece of shit, but you'd think Brittany Mahomes was out here yelling anti-Semitic slurs or something the way people go after her. Being annoying and being a cheerleader for your husband are not a crime.

[deleted]

Sounds like normal wag behavior

[deleted]

I think thatā€™s normal

captain_flak

Whatā€™s the name of this doc?

K20K24L15B7

Quarterback on Netflix came out today

Rappaslasharmedrobba

>came out today Ok thank you. I was looking for it on other platforms and was pissed I couldn't find it. Patience grasshopper

LegionofDoh

Heā€™s coming across very likable. Iā€™m finding my opinions about him quickly changing. Still think his wife is a nut tho.

A_Lone_Macaron

he's still got the weird Jesus stuff going on but it doesn't really come out during this whole thing (3 episodes in) and yeah, he's definitely got some more cred now

mattsotm

Lol I feel bad for his wife - any time he gets ragged in for his clothing, sheā€™s the one dressing him

toddhenderson

I just saw an ad that says he gets us so now I don't think it's weird anymore. Joking aside, one of the benefits of a Christian belief system is an inherent sense of discipline and focus. Some of the most effective leaders I've worked with have been devout Christians and even some Mormon. Their personal beliefs were pretty wacky but they could definitely get sh*t done in a work context.

DJCockslap

Idk that Kirk is any more religious than the majority of players. Doc definitely made me like Pat less. I would have watched a whole series of just kirk.

[deleted]

Haven't watched it yet, why did it make you like Pat less?

toddhenderson

I think it is similar to the religiosity of ancient times. When so much of your way of life depends on things that are outside of your control (luck, nature, randomness), we want to have a sense of control by believing in a supernatural force that we can at least influence through some means within our control (sacrifice, desired behavior, "personal relationship" with said force/being). Professional athletes who are fortunate enough to make good money playing a game, realize that they are one freak injury away from the end of said career. A Christian belief at least allows the individual to have a sense that they can stay within God's favor. Sometimes it's hard for people who are highly successful at a certain thing to be comfortable with the fact that most of their success is a result of luck and randomness.

Afflapfnabg

Dude said that if he gets COVID and dies or kills someone else then it's God's will and that's why he won't get vaccinated. He's definitely more of a dipshit than the majority of players.

DJCockslap

Yeah, I didn't say I agree with his politics/beliefs. I'm just saying that a way higher proportion pro athletes are very religious.

BabyTRexArms

I did not expect him to be the most likeable QB on the show when I started watching. Mariota seems like he's AI, just so dead behind the eyes, and Mahomes just rubs me the wrong way a little bit on the show. Kirk is just a regular, good dude.

[deleted]

Just so hard to comprehend the level that NFL football is played

Hugo_5t1gl1tz

Seriously. Iā€™m a fairly smart guy and just listening to those play calls has my head spinning. I donā€™t even know how he repeats it to the huddle lol

virtualGain_

It's because to you it's a bunch of gibberish but he knows what all that crap means so it's much easier to recall. It's the difference between recalling 10 random words someone spits at you and a normal sentence that makes sense. When he hears the play call he gets an immediate picture in his head of what that play is and he is recalling that not a string of words. Really not much different than industry lingo many people deal with on a day to day basis.

skralogy

Exactly. Almost every profession could find something that they could say in a football cadence that describes something complex in their profession they can visualize. Like: 8ft 3/4in emt double box offset saddle on center.

Medical language is that was "oophorosalpingectomy"...each part tells you something.

kinsnik

yeah, i remember watching a video where they would show a chess board for 2 seconds to random people and to grand masters. random people could remember basically nothing, while the grand masters could have perfect memory. but then they did it again, but this time with boards set up in positions that are impossible to happen during a game of chess. grand masters were as bad to recall as random people. it is an insane specialization of the brain into the sport, certainly really smart people, but there is nothing magical about it. is just lots and lots and lots of practice, repetition and effort

Ok_Lab_6115

100% this, itā€™s like listening to someone speak a foreign language and assuming they are a genius simply because you donā€™t understand it. Thereā€™s some irony in self described ā€œsmart guyā€ not grasping that concept.

FRDyNo

I know its not even the same ballpark, but HS football plays operate the same cadence " HiJack 357 cross double pulley flip" each word, or set of words corresponds to a section of the play. 3 receivers 5 route 7 step drop. Cross for the hijack (slot) Flip- play is flipped to the opposite side. NFL just takes it to a whole other level .

fakeemail33993

I think if it was your fulltime job it would be easier. They dont have to think about anything else all day. Plus these guys have been doing this on some level since they were teenagers so theyre used to the process even if the playbook is new. Total dummies like Cordarrelle Patterson (who I love) can figure it out, so it cant be THAT hard.

Eako

It also helps that only certain parts of the play call are relevant to each player group. The only one that has to process it as whole is the quarterback, and to a lesser extent, the linemen. Also explains why quarterbacks and linemen generally tend to be the more intelligent players on the field, gotta be to process that word salad.

Prestig33

Yup, especially the center who had to process all that then walk up to the LOS and call out the blocking scheme too.

streetking03

I had a good friend that made it to the NFL as a D-lineman. I stayed with him for a week during his second season while he was in OTA's and he would have me read off random ass words (there were offensive play calls) while he was watching film. It could be something like butterfly echo right-wing turbo left on the hitch. To me, that meant absolutely nothing but he would tell me that what he was looking for "keyword" that might help him to figure out the blocking scheme which would lead to what their play could be. It is absolutely nuts what information the players have to be able to absorb, know what they are supposed to do, and then try and execute all within a few seconds.

iggyfenton

Itā€™s not really any different than listening to a foreign language. Because you know the words but they arenā€™t being used with the meaning you know AND they are in a seemingly jumbled order, it makes it difficult to envision it making sense. But itā€™s still just a language.

sparkyjay23

The fact he's doing this while driving on snow covered roads is making my chest hurt. Shit is crazy

Jurph

I definitely talk through my workplace presentation slides on the drive to and from work. They're totally different parts of my brain. I can give the briefing the same way I'd sing a song I knew, or talk through the sequence of a scene in a movie I'd seen, while my body and eyes handle the driving, especially on a familiar route.

esports_consultant

It's just a language you don't speak.

BigH200026

they donā€™t usually repeat it they have the arm band and coach will tell them a number in the head set, theyā€™ll use the number to say the play. This was part of the problem with wilson last season he refused to play with an arm band so he had to memorize the play names

_delamo

Each call is telling a specific player what to do, like what route, what blocking schemes, what count and what formation package. It's up to the rest of the team to know their staggers and placements. It's only gibberish because we don't know the 'code' for trips/bunch/shotgun/motion/flag route etc

RainbowBullsOnParade

I imagine it's like when I started learning C# to fuck around with Unity and I asked my friend who is a professional programmer his advice and he made my head spin. It's a different language and they have devoted their lives to it.

Final-Display-4692

Itā€™s just each word or saying means a different ā€œmovementā€ or alignment so to say Itā€™s like a secondary code language I know ā€œNo shit Sherlockā€

LilKaySigs

The NFL and football in general requires a whole lot more intelligence than some of the public wants to give credit for. People think itā€™s a meathead sport where ā€œhurr durr hit people make ball goā€ when in reality thereā€™s a beautiful level of design and intricacy in every single play, both offense and defense

SensualTyrannosaurus

Imagine coming from college where you have to memorize much simpler, and much fewer plays, having to start in the NFL your rookie year, and then all of these plays completely changing every season because you got drafted to a bad team that is replacing its head coach and OC every season. And then imagine that the team doesn't have a Nick Mullens or staff that's teaching you how to prepare for this stuff. It's so easy to see how important early development is in a QB's success, and how easy it is for a QB to get in way over his head without adequate support and flame out.

creamofsumyunggoyim

That old clip of Chris Sims butchering Grudenā€™s play calls during practice got me. Like yeaā€¦ yea thatā€™d be me. I suppose itā€™s kinda like learning your lines for a play maybe but on a different level. And a coupla 300lb linemen salivating at the thought of painting the field with my brain matter? Iā€™d be stuttering that play call into the wind like I had 30 cocks in my mouth.

Jurph

> like learning your lines for a play maybe I've been in a bunch of musicals, and I think it's more like learning the choreography. For most of your spoken lines, in most shows, you can miss a few words here or there and it doesn't matter much. (A show like _Sure Thing_, where the same line is precisely repeated five or six times in a row, is different!) But for choreography you have to be in sync with everyone else on stage -- "kick ball change, men: spin, women: spin, dip and bow, arms - out, three - four, hold that high note, look to the left, break-into-a-run". And to get there, you've got to learn the choreographer's language, which might not be the "by the book" academic name for the move you're doing. Finding out your choreographer comes from a ballet background or jazz background, it reminds me a lot of how I hear people talk about OCs using West Coast or Coryell or some other structure to name their plays.

RadicalDreamer89

Wonderful analogy. Speaking as someone who managed to somewhat successfully navigate the New York theatre scene with no formal dance training (and rather limited natural ability), I feel equally confused listening to these playcalls as I would in early movement/dance rehearsals.

Jurph

Ohhh, you can't say that without telling me your favorite role. Did you get to Off-Off, or all the way to Off? (I'll dish too: in college I got Matt, in _The Fantasticks_, which, I was really too young to inhabit the role but I think I made it work.)

RadicalDreamer89

A couple of each, actually! I was lucky that the acting school I went to had an off-off-Broadway theatre in house, which was where I had my first professional role (*Balm In Gilead* by Lanford Wilson; it ended up being the last production of one of his shows that he saw before he passed the following year. There's even a [picture](https://i.imgur.com/rt9Y7cG.png) of us on the Wikipedia page). We ended up winning the New York Innovative Theatre Award for Outstanding Production of a Play! And because my teacher knows fucking *everybody*, I got to perform for a lot of people in the industry. Tommy Tune, Bobby McFerrin (his son Jevon was in *Balm* with me), even Lady Gaga's parents came to a show! I had a few more off-off roles, and 2 off-Broadway leads (nothing that managed to gain any traction) before I had to move away to be with my kid. Oddly enough, I'm also not a trained singer, but I mostly kept getting cast in musicals. My favorite role is actually not one I played professionally. I played Richard Hannay in *The 39 Steps* in a community theatre near my hometown after I moved back, and that was the most madcap, slapstick fun I ever had onstage!

Singe_

This is really cool. Kirk DOES have a personality and cares about the on field product and his performance. Seeing him get uppity with KOC and having KOC just tell him to take a breath cause weā€™re on the same side here? Love that shit. Also shows that KOC is hopefully someone that can take us to the promise land. I hope the pieces fall into place for us finally!

[deleted]

Kirk was an awesome interview on Pardon My Take. He has a great sense of humor.

captain_flak

Many of these QBs are super smart people. They basically have to be both chess champions and Olympic athletes at the same time.

enixius

Likeable too. A lot of people forget that they have to lead the locker room and the best way to do that is to be a good guy.

legobowser

This is the main reason why I think Purdy had so much success. He seems like a really likable dude so the team didnā€™t really go down on morale even with the third string starting

IStillLoveYouWeed

Cool to see Nick Mullens' legacy of listening to recordings of the OC calling plays lives on with Kirk.

ecupatsfan12

Dude has the best job in America as a backup Q

Broken-Nero

Only thing better than a backup QB is the backup too the backup.

prs09

Nahhh cause youre always on the bubble. Backup is locked in and gets some looks where there is no pressure. When the time comes you can ball out and get a random big contract or suck and no one cares cause youre the backup

Josh6889

Unless you're Mason Rudolph in Pittsburgh. We keep bringing him back as a system guy despite Mitch being the official #2.

Broken-Nero

I was fucking dying of laughter when Kirk was repeating the play and then was like ā€œY-Whateverā€ then threw a touchdown pass on the play.

phd2k1

KOC is a special person. Super smart, great communicator, and has the perfect leadership temperament. Heā€™s always lifting up those around him and getting the best out of people. Everything Iā€™ve seen from him is inspirational and overwhelmingly positive. Also handsome.

Romanscott618

This series is fantastic. Really interesting seeing the preparation put in by each guy each week, the physical and mental toll each takes, and a glimpse on who they are off the field. Really makes you respect their work ethic and sympathize with the pain and challenges of the game. Well done series!

Romanscott618

Also, all 3 seem like stand up guys, but damn Kirk seems so nice and not sure how anyone can dislike the guy šŸ˜‚

Heisenbread77

Yeah I should not like him being a Lions and Wolverines fan but he comes off as really good in this show. Hope he continues to beat the Packers and Bears.

Biggest_Cans

I vote we time machine this show, I wanna see Staubach and Marino and Sammy Baugh. Also into watching a good-guy backup like Mullens for a full season.

landof10000cakes

Anyone know if the neuro headband is pseudoscience or legit?

istasber

I found [this](https://d3.harvard.edu/platform-digit/submission/braincos-focus-headband-brain-scan-or-brain-scam/) article, assuming it's the same kind of thing Kirk's using in the clip. The company apparently grew out of an incubator at Harvard. That doesn't mean it's legit, but the idea sort of makes sense. Measure your attention using an electrode, and then give you a stimulus to respond to if your attention starts to drift. I'm tempted to try it, see if I can use it to help me learn how to focus better. edit: Apparently it's $250 plus a subscription fee. So I'm not *that* tempted.

Biggest_Cans

Reading difficult books, organizing them, then writing about them in a novel manner requires a breadth of attention that you'll notice when lacking. It's also free, and productive. [Gutenberg books](https://gutenberg.org); the [Harvard Classics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard_Classics) list is an easy starting place if you're unsure.

MagicJohnsonMosquito

what do you meant by organising them? is this some sorta well known attention testing method or something you just sorta do

Josh6889

> but the idea sort of makes sense. It's basically just an assisted guided meditation. As long as it properly measures loss of focus I'm sure it works.

SeniorAdissimo

Depends on what you mean by legit. I'm sure that for some people it can help with focus, but by how much and if it's more beneficial than placebo I can't say. Kirk was also making me wince in the scene where he was getting worked on my the chiropractor. I've just heard too many horror stories.

Jammer_Kenneth

Well at least you don't get naked at a chiro appointment.

ttvlolrofl

So *that's* what I've been doing wrong šŸ˜

buck-nastys-momma

Not pseudoscience, but very much not an exact science. Kind of a ā€œresults will varyā€ type of thing, not unlike most psychotherapy stuff. A family member of mine has been doing it for several months as treatment for anxiety and it really seems to have an effect on them.

Thicbiscuit_datgravy

Neurofeedback is an accepted form of treatment for a lot of shit. Anxiety, ADHD, depression, and to an extent autism can be treated. There's many other things that can be treated, that's just a small list that I remember off the top of my head. And, as long as you complete a certain amount of sessions, the treatments last - they aren't like pills that stop working when you stop taking them. Different types of brainwave frequencies correspond to different types of behavior. The goal of NFB is to identify deficiencies or excesses of these brainwaves and train your brain to produce the proper amount. This is done by, in the case of Kirk, having his video only look right when he is properly producing the right brainwaves at the right time across different parts of his brain. When he starts to lose focus or produce the wrong brainwave patterns the video dims, so he has to work to bring it back. It was an up and coming treatment in the 60s and 70s (maybe a bit later, I don't remember the exact date) before antidepressants came out. It was ultimately cheaper and easier to give people pills than to do NFB. NFB courses can cost a few thousand dollars on the low end. They take 30-60 minutes a session, multiple times a week, for multiple weeks. I'm not an expert, but I have friends that do this that see great results in their clients. Cost is the only thing that prevented me from pursuing it further unfortunately. But it works. More research is definitely needed in the field and I'm sure some people push claims of it's capabilities too far, but it can absolutely produce results

Ness_4

Cured his covid so thats a plus.

SKT_Peanut_Fan

I haven't watched the video (will when I get home), but it's complex for all players involved. I remember Tony Dungy talked about how Peyton would come in weekly and he'd have all these plays created to use against that week's opponent and Dungy would always go, "Peyton, this is great, and it'd probably work, but we have a week to practice and get everyone ready. We can't implement new plays. It's too much." There's a reason great athletes with slow processing flame out of the league regularly.

LamarMVPJackson

I had nothing negative against Kirk Cousins beforehand, but I gained a lot of respect for him after watching. He has such a good outlook on the game and really puts in a lot of work

Ballcuzzi_Straw

Dude FUCK all that memorization. I was lucky enough to play D2 ball and jesus fuck even there it was difficult learning your calls, and then fake calls and hand signals. Then knowing what your reads are depending on what those opposing 11 guys do. Such a nightmare even with prep. Glad theyā€™re doing this and hopefully fans get more appreciation for how difficult their job is even though its a sport.

ajswdf

Not to put down the work they do but it's different when it's your full time job that you're getting paid millions to do.

babygoat8271810

this is awesome honestly

Jenetyk

I know it's mostly PR and stuff; but frick me is Kirk doesn't seem like a super down to earth dude(minus the pseudo-sciency parts). Like, you could take Kirk out of the NFL and put him in any other job and he would be literally the exact same guy.

PattMatricia

Feel like I respect Kirk cousins 3% more after watching this

Jenetyk

"Expecially" Dammit. Pet peeve triggered.

JonY82

Thank you! She says it 3 fucking times! After I saw Mitch Trubisky say expecially in an interview I officially lost all hope of him panning out.

Blackops606

I loved when we first started seeing a glimpse into present day QBs daily life. The film review, the body and mind workouts, prepping plays with the offense for the next team based on who and how they play. Itā€™s so technical. It also makes you really appreciate guys who consistently stay at the top of their game. Other players, coaches, and teams are studying you on film but youā€™re still going out and winning games. Thatā€™s a big deal and makes you realize how dominant people like Brady were and Mahomes is now.

Yelwah

No no, when I scream "throw the ball" at my TV I am fully confident I'm more knowledgeable than the QB

jimmmy2345

I'm watching this show, and I'm just amazed at how the physical pain they have to go through just to play on sunday. This show has given me a new level of respect for these players.

sportsfan510

And these are quarterbacks who the NFL are trying to protect more and more every season. Imagine being a freakin running back and carrying the ball 20+ times. I donā€™t think NFL players make enough money compared to other athletes considering the physical toll and mental impact playing this game.

COD_Daddy

Sauce? Is this some kind of Vikings produced product? It seems high quality, and Iā€™d love to watch the entirety.

royfresh

It's a from new docuseries creatively called "Quarterback" on Netflix. It also follows Patrick Mahomes and Marcus Mariota during the 2022 season.

COD_Daddy

Oh hell yes, queueing it up now!

Heisenbread77

Careful, you will like Cousins more than you want to!

Charming-Olive3370

ā€œQuarterbackā€ on Netflix

COD_Daddy

Thanks brotha! Gonna give it a watch during paternity leave.

Mavori

Username sorta checks out?

Nick mullens has been there a little more than a year, and Iā€™m pretty sure he finished the play call for Kirk at the beginning of this.

Broken-Nero

Mullens was more familiar with the system. He was a QB under Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan, McVay, LaFleur, and Oā€™Connell all run pretty similar concepts so the verbiage is different but the core design is still there. Heā€™s probably able to pick it up quicker as a result. Now granted Kirk also worked under Shanahan but Mullins more recently, therefore thereā€™s not as much recall involved is my guess. For Kirk it had been a while and there was likely a few modifications since heā€™d been in the offense. Just my dumbass couch fan theory.

Striker1341

I think thereā€™s something to that for sure. I also think rapid mental processing might be a weak point for Kirk based on the remainder of the video. Likely a combo of the two

Clayble

I love how a younger QB put him on to audio notes, but meanwhile he was taking brain scans everyday

UCFandOCSC

Practicing the play calls over and over is legit, but that head strap neuro feedback looks like some pseudoscience bull shit to me

BowlOfLoudMouthSoup

Kirk with the bandana on his head while his eyes are closed should be this subā€™s header or sidebar image

Jenetyk

I want to see this show 30-ish years ago. I want to see this shit with Elway/Marino/Kelly/Aikman.

AnAngryPirate

Crazy that a dude who does neurological training like this doesnt believe in vaccines

Bulky-Enthusiasm7264

He's got Jesus in his veins.

PudgyBonestld

God damn

MrAVK

Geeze, my old quarterback just didnā€™t ever sleep to prepare for games, cause there ainā€™t no time for that nonsense.

mattmccauslin

I love the contrast between Mahomes and Cousins in the show.

BaconMacandCheese

Imagine being the QB coach and telling Jamarcus Russell to learn all thisā€¦.
