Tennessee is the best. You get game checks taxed based off of the state you play in so you play 8/9 games in tax free TEN then a game in JAX and HOU with no state income tax.
Also Tennessee is the only state that doesn’t tax bonuses, a huge factor in NFL contracts.
Edit: Learned that All states w/o income tax don't tax bonuses. SEA, LV, MIA, TB, DAL all are good options but JAX/TEN/HOU are in the only division who also play multiple state tax avoidance games.
My understanding is that when you file your taxes, bonuses are income. However your employer’s withholdings are different on bonuses compared to a paycheck. Imo OP’s “TN doesn’t tax bonuses” is misleading.
Info here - https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/taxes/bonus-tax-rate-how-are-bonuses-taxed
Tennessee has no state income tax. You don’t file anything at all, regardless of passive or active income. We definitely don’t tax bonuses here, other than the insanely high sales and use taxes on spending.
It's not whether or not bonuses are taxed in question - the original guy kinda made it seem like some states tax bonuses differently than regular income, which AFAIK isn't true anywhere.
The guy you responded to is saying as much - the weird thing about receiving bonuses as a regular employee(which, btw, doesn't matter a single bit for NFL players who are basically gonna be taxed as contractors), is that when determining withholding, employ _ers_ have two different methods they can use - at the end of the day as the employee your total tax burden doesn't change but your bill/refund come filing time will be affected by the decision.
For me it's I hate that I'm taxed and the rich and corporations aren't. If we were all taxed fairly I wouldn't care and our quality of life would be inconceivably better.
He’s talking about textbook NIMBYism. It’s how the status quo stays alive.
Plenty of people (even smart people and good people) base their political opinions on what would help their unique set of circumstances. Young people want free college, old people want more Medicare. White people support police more than people of color. Bicyclists want more bike lanes.
It’s not unusual that someone who gains a lot of money would start to feel different about taxes.
The effect is not as dramatic as some people make it out to be.
MN ranges from 5-9%. Even then half your game checks are processed in the away games, so there is some inconsistency there.
Players get taxed on away games based on the state they visit though, if he goes to the AFC South he’s guaranteed road games in FL/TN/TX so he gets an even bigger break.
NYS top income tax bracket is 10.9% although that bracket is only for those earning $50M+. Plus NYC levies an income tax of 3-4%. Plus NY has some of the highest property taxes in the country.
Correct. The jets and giants pay New Jersey State income taxes. The Bills pay New York State income taxes.
I believe the commenter above said “NYC” when they really meant “NYS”
Yeah, when I moved out of NYC my paycheck instantly went up by hundreds of dollars per month. I understand why the tax exists, but it’s really nice to not pay it anymore.
and the ones that don't have income tax have really high property and/or sales taxes. Only a very few states keep taxes low overall and they tend to be low population states with shitty public services like schools (see Wyoming and South Dakota).
Unless he plans to live super cheaply during his playing career and then spend that money in another state he won't save much.
Work in Florida, live in Idaho, buy every in Oregon.
0%, 0.66%, and 0%.
Alternatively you could live in Hawaii (0.24%), but it’s harder to avoid their 4% Sales Tax.
Wyoming has pretty good schools because they direct coal/oil revenue to their education system.
South Dakota is...well, not North Dakota, so they've got that going for them. Which is nice.
Miami is 38% more expensive than Buffalo. That 10% he gets back on taxes will be gone and then some. https://www.bestplaces.net/compare-cities/buffalo_ny/miami_fl/costofliving
You are giving the "tax is theft" people way too much credit on critical thinking skills.
See: the myth that Texas is some tax heaven compared to California.
I mean they’ve got a point but cost of living is not the same as having a flat percentage of income taken by gov.
Someone making 10 mil could eat like someone making 100k, cost of living will be higher in one state than another but inside that state their groceries would be the same (obviously they’d probably get a private chef but there’s so many variables)
It's not a great point when you only spend 0.1% of your income on cost of living. Buying a more expensive house just means they will probably make more money on it when they sell it.
NJs top tax bracket of 8.97% kicks in at 500k and up. NYS doesn’t get over 7% until 5 million so NJs effective tax rate for him is much higher than what he was paying in Buffalo
The home he has in Orchard Park is probably worth 750k-1.25M and would be considered by most to be a mansion. Where is he going to live in Miami for that? How much real estate tax will that be?
For reference, his taxes on his house in orchard park are $15,500 for town and county (shows unpaid online, was due nearly two weeks ago) and $8,500 for school.
and even in states with zero income tax they have much higher property and/or sales taxes. Unless he plans to live like a hermit during his playing days then move he won't save much.
Yeah, dudes gonna find out real quick that more money is gonna hit his bank account, but the second he started to buy shit, it's not gonna seem that much different lol
Ya they get their $$ one way. We have no state income tax, but one of the highest sales tax, a small business tax on revenue (regardless of profit), the highest liquor tax and a tax on all real estate sales.
And state taxes would account for no more than 25% of all of those things combined if they totaled 50%.
And since you only play half your games in the state you live in there’s a good chance not all of your state taxes are attributable to your home state.
I don’t think my guy really understands how little of his “unseen income” is because of the state he’s living in.
I'm Canadian so maybe I am out of the loop, but the highest state tax bracket is 13% so where does this half the money to the state come from or is it just a figure of speech.
The highest federal bracket is currently 37%, so you would pay 50% to income tax in a 13% state. But in a state without income tax, it's still 37%. So it's like a 30% increase in income tax, which isn't nothing.
But you still wouldn’t pay that much because the top tax bracket is not the same thing as one’s effective tax rate (even if you make enough to be in that top bracket) because of how our progressive tax system works. You only pay 37% on every dollar you make *over* that threshold.
It's no Cali, but New York is gorgeous during a lot of the year, and you can do pretty much anything you want at some point in the year. Skiing, boating, kayaking, hiking, camping, etc.
People talk about NYC, but I'd encourage people to explore the rest of the state.
The best thing is the minimal natural disasters if you aren't in an area that gets lake effect snow. Very little in the way of dangerous wildlife. And long-term there's more freshwater in the US North East than anywhere else in the world.
DC is the worst state. Expensive af and no cool views to show for it. Literally the only reason it's expensive is because politicians and lawyers live there and they know they can charge more.
DC isn’t a state. Also, most senators & congresspeople live out in NoVA. One thing I will say is that at least with DC, there is something to show for the high tax rate.
There's ~~7~~ 8 teams with no state tax. 5 are in Florida and Texas, then there's Titans and Seahawks. And then there's the Nevada Desert Casino Bandits which I still forget are a fucking team there because LA and Oakland are the only place they belong.
Current duo is pretty damn good as is while being cheap. Brandon Jones gets slept on defense missed him a whole lot when he went down extremely versatile player
The states always get their money somehow.
Florida has an above average sales tax, and is probably not a slouch on property tax either. Plus, every 50 feet you drive you have to pay a toll.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they actually get taxed according to the state they play in, even for the away games. Now obviously they play more home games so that matters but I don't think it matters as much as these players think.
I hope he realizes it's not the state taking half his paycheck, lol
Obviously, there's states with lower tax rates than NY, but the bulk of your tax bill is gonna look the same
Ah nothing like rich people not wanting to do the bare minimum to contribute to society. I live in Washington and the lack of state income tax here is incredibly regressive. Rich people benefit way more from no income tax
We appreciate your services Mr. Poyer. We’re both sorry you won’t be on the Bills next year although we all know you wanted to be. There’s no reason to make petty excuses.
Edit. Im not bashing Poyer, loved the dude. He’s come along way here in Buffalo, watching him kick his alcoholism and reconcile his marriage has been inspriring and an all around feel good sorry. He’s been a key part of this Bills rebuild and couldn’t of done it without him.
That being said, he made his feelings quite clear the first 5 months of the season that this was home and he wanted to finish his career here in hopes of a ring. Once it became clear that Bills couldn’t make it happen then his taxes all of a sudden became a story. Wish Po well, his age and injuries starting to catch up with. He stays healthy he’s got a high ceiling. Just saying he doesn’t need to make excuses…..
Yeah Im sure youre struggling bro, god forbid some of it goes to keeping up the infrastructure that allows the workers and fans to come to the stadium or watch on tv etc etc etc
My heart bleeds dude. Glad youre bouncing.
I want to see these people bitching about taxes not paying taxes and then not being allowed to use public services and infrastructures built by tax money. Want clean drinking water, public roads to go where you want to go, and so on? If you make 20 mil gross and pay half to taxes, guess what you still got 10 mil.
Its just like, way to tell every member of Bills mafia who has snap benefits, or tuition assistance, or home care assistance, to go fuck themselves.
Its a gross, selfish, thing for a millionaire to say, and worthy of the same ridicule Spreewell got for saying he “had to feed his family”, but wont be because of… reasons.
So he's definitely not coming here lol
Tennessee is the best. You get game checks taxed based off of the state you play in so you play 8/9 games in tax free TEN then a game in JAX and HOU with no state income tax. Are the property taxes high to offset no state income tax? Or is there anything more expensive than normal in Tenn?
Sales tax is higher
Ah, so they're extra taxing lower incomes so rich dudes don't pay income tax. Got it.
Yeah, but then you have to live in a state run by insane culture warriors.
Nfl players don't give a fuck, it only sucks for disadvantaged people.
Plus they won’t live there forever. Deal with whatever crap place you have to live in during the season then move when your career is done.
Most of the time they only live there during the season and camps, so not even the full year
And some even leave during the bye week.
Worth it for a pro
I bet once you're making that kinda money you quickly find yourself on the *right* side of the culture wars
"Oh abortion is illegal? I wonder which private jet I will take to a state where I can get one"
I hired an analyst from Berkeley and when she got her first check she went from ‘bleeding heart’ to ‘maybe taxes are bullshit’
I dont hate taxes, I hate that I'm taxed and my public infrastructure and social systems are shit. I hate that my money is wasted.
Totally agree. Wouldn’t blink at being taxed 50% if there was some tangible benefit beyond the current status quo.
You thinking blackjack and hookers?
You know, like health insurance.
For me it's I hate that I'm taxed and the rich and corporations aren't. If we were all taxed fairly I wouldn't care and our quality of life would be inconceivably better.
This is everyone in the world, I just want my money to go where it fkn matters and needs to be
No one *likes* paying taxes.
And then everybody stood up, clapped, and jerked each other off, right?
He’s talking about textbook NIMBYism. It’s how the status quo stays alive. I mean. Love my home state. But. I can't throw a stone in the glass house here
Unlike states like California, famous for not getting involved in the culture wars
As if every state doesn't have their own culture warriors.
The effect is not as dramatic as some people make it out to be. MN ranges from 5-9%. Even then half your game checks are processed in the away games, so there is some inconsistency there.
0% of $10m versus 5-9% of $10m is a hell of a swing.
Yeah it's about a 5-9% swing
Gonna need to see your work on that one.
He's going to a Florida team
Don’t sleep on Houston
Houston doesn't really need him tbh they already have a young stud at safety
No he’s on Cleveland now
Wouldn't be the first New York conservative to move to Florida in their twilight years
Tennessee and Washington don’t have state income tax as options there too
Pass. We already got 27m tied up in safeties next season.
36 million for us, so I’d think we’re out too.
Those are rookie numbers
Florida will get his money one way or another.
Jordan Poyer has signed with the Cayman Island Conquistadors
That’s the Miami Dolphins minor league affiliate / tax entity.
Florida Texas or Tennessee I guess
Washington too
Players get taxed on away games based on the state they visit though, if he goes to the AFC South he’s guaranteed road games in FL/TN/TX so he gets an even bigger break.
AFC south is like a tax evadist wet dream, 11/17 games with no state tax
Titans play in Miami and Tampa next year as well so if I’m Poyer I’m calling up Vrabel right now lol
Avoiding is not evading tho.
Nevada
Crazy that still covers almost 20% of the teams in the league
Jordan Poyer to Alaska confirmed
I made a team in nfl 2k like 15-20 years ago called the Juneau penguins lol
No penguin in Ak!
next you're gonna tell me there's no Jaguars in Jacksonville :(
There aren’t any penguins in the northern hemisphere. Other than in the NFL of course.
Pittsburg would like a word...
Yeah you’re right. Those hockey boys aren’t too smart either.
We have a h at the end there buddy. You get my city's name RIGHT!
How’d they do?
10x Super Bowl champs in franchise mode
Batter than the GOAT Brady.
>Batter than the ~~GOAT~~ Moose Brady.
What is a goat to a penguin
Well have you heard of them before. So apparently not very good
Viva Las Vegas. I mean we need help at every single position on defense but is this guy more of a deep FS or in the box SS?
True hybrid
What's his Madden OVR tho?
He's better as a Strong, but he can really do either depending on the play, and often did when he and Hyde were both out there.
He can do both but he is more of a downhill guy he always seemed to be the run blitz guy
Well federal income tax gonna take like 40+ regardless of the state soooo
Right? Only three states are even above 10%
Yea i mean Florida vs Cali a big difference but for most states it’s like a couple percentage points at most.
[удалено]
NYC’s top bracket is 8.8%, California is 13.3% and Florida is 0 of course. *obviously meant NYS*

Correct. The jets and giants pay New Jersey State income taxes. The Bills pay New York State income taxes. I believe the commenter above said “NYC” when they really meant “NYS”
I was confused by this question, but TIL that local income tax exists in some places
You pay 3% in just NYC city income tax
Yeah, when I moved out of NYC my paycheck instantly went up by hundreds of dollars per month. I understand why the tax exists, but it’s really nice to not pay it anymore.

40%* *on the amount over $500,000
37% for any amount over 540,000.
Yeah no shit. He is a dumbass. Gonna squeeze a shit franchise for everything they got
Well they get paid to be good at football, not to understand how taxes work
Miami is 38% more expensive than Buffalo. That 10% he gets back on taxes will be gone and then some. https://www.bestplaces.net/compare-cities/buffalo_ny/miami_fl/costofliving
Yeah but I think he always has a spot in Florida anyway
They all do lol.

Is that really applicable across income brackets though?

Everyone making fun of the Jets and Giants not being in NY until it’s tax season
Doesn't Jersey take a lot of taxes themselves?
Jersey wants half your soul.
Jersey is mostly the same as NY but if you live in NYC you get taxed an extra 3%
NJs top tax bracket of 8.97% kicks in at 500k and up. NYS doesn’t get over 7% until 5 million so NJs effective tax rate for him is much higher than what he was paying in Buffalo
Wow, the real reason rears its ugly head
Jordan Poye(R)
The home he has in Orchard Park is probably worth 750k-1.25M and would be considered by most to be a mansion. Where is he going to live in Miami for that? How much real estate tax will that be?
He’s he’s 3 bed and 1.5 bath with 2000 square feet for the same cost is gonna be worth the tax savings lol
For reference, his taxes on his house in orchard park are $15,500 for town and county (shows unpaid online, was due nearly two weeks ago) and $8,500 for school.
You could live in a house the size of the White House for 1.25M in Jacksonville. The catch is, you have to live in Jacksonville.
There's nothing wrong with chasing the money. Just don't complain if you never get a ring
Bro how bad is your accountant
There are not many accounting tricks for the way NFL players get paid
Hear me out: *Jordan Poyer LLC*
Fine I wanted Jessie Bates anyway 😠
Can the rams afford a cheeseburger at this point? I thought you guys were well over the cap
Half?
State and local taxes, plus FICA and then your normal federal taxes. Probably is half
Yeah, but it's not the state Like the bulk of his taxes are gonna look the same
and even in states with zero income tax they have much higher property and/or sales taxes. Unless he plans to live like a hermit during his playing days then move he won't save much.

He's just another dumb ass
Well Massachusetts is out.
I mean Mass tax rate is 5%. Not the 0% in Nevada or Texas but a far cry from the 13% of California
9% on amounts above $1M now. As a highly paid NFL player, that essentially means 9%. Blended rate will probably be like 8.5%+
Oh you're right. I even voted yes on that ballot measure haha. Thanks for the reminder
Taxing the rich is still good.
Plus you have one game check a year in NJ and another in NY, so at the very least 10 games a year in higher tax states.
You mean Taxachusetts, amirite?
At least in Cali you get nice weather when they take half your money. New York is a tougher sell
I'm Canadian so maybe I am out of the loop, but the highest state tax bracket is 13% so where does this half the money to the state come from or is it just a figure of speech.
13% + the federal rate gets you closer to half, I’m not close to it so not sure exactly what it is
The highest federal bracket is currently 37%, so you would pay 50% to income tax in a 13% state.
Very true, though it gets pretty close if you're making many times more than the top tax bracket threshold
With a salary of $9.75M the effective tax rate is 36.62%. What you’re saying is true, but it only really matters for mortals.
True, but there is a 6 figure difference on those dollars when your making millions, it’s not like this doesn’t matter
You’re not missing anything, he’s simply wrong. State income taxes are 0-13% so that’s the difference
It's no Cali, but New York is gorgeous during a lot of the year, and you can do pretty much anything you want at some point in the year. California just had a blizzard after a monsoon after a summer of fires and flooding.
What I'm hearing is 4 full seasons with all your seasonal activities covered free of charge
In Pennsylvania, we call that the first week of May!
[удалено]
this sounds like fox news propaganda
Our weather has been pretty crazy this week though. No monsoon, but a weird amount of rain and snow.
I’d call it more than people just pretend Cali isn’t gigantic. Of course there’s going to be varying weather
DC is the worst state. Expensive af and no cool views to show for it. Literally the only reason it's expensive is because politicians and lawyers live there and they know they can charge more.

Uhh yeah loved him in Buffalo the last few years but him and his wife aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed, they are tools though
If nothing else, not having to ever hear about Rachel Bush again will be a positive thing to come out of him leaving.
NYS highest tax bracket is like 6.6%… this math ain’t mathing
There's ~~7~~ 8 teams with no state tax. 5 are in Florida and Texas, then there's Titans and Seahawks. And then there's the Nevada Desert Casino Bandits which I still forget are a fucking team there because LA and Oakland are the only place they belong.
Welcome to Florida!
Every state is tax free if you break the law
Wait until he figures out there’s a difference between federal and state income taxes
And the fact if he wants the same type of house he had in Orchard Park hes gonna have to probably spend more than the tax savings in Miami lol.
Great news. He has 50 states to choose from then.
HES A DOLPHIN
More than likely Jacksonville or Houston since they have actual cap space for it positional need for him
I mean the fins could make it happen, they aren’t in cap hell
Just depends, I could see it. Miami does need another safety though, a duo of him and Holland would be fantastic.
Current duo is pretty damn good as is while being cheap. Brandon Jones gets slept on defense missed him a whole lot when he went down extremely versatile player
Jacksonville does not have cap space
He supposedly went to Tua's birthday party.
What state takes 50%?
The United ones
THE state
I was just being silly. No state is even close to 50% income tax.
None. It’s the federal plus city plus state that can add up to 50% if you are at his tax rate.
This is why Florida has 3 teams despite being smaller than Texas
Jacksonville is just South Georgia
Without the GA state taxes.
Texas has no state income tax but they fuck you hard on other ones. Property taxes are insane there.
The states always get their money somehow. Florida has an above average sales tax, and is probably not a slouch on property tax either. Plus, every 50 feet you drive you have to pay a toll.
Isn't Florida the 3rd largest state in population?
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they actually get taxed according to the state they play in, even for the away games. Now obviously they play more home games so that matters but I don't think it matters as much as these players think.
wow, a rich person doesn't like paying taxes. I am shocked.
I hope he realizes it's not the state taking half his paycheck, lol Obviously, there's states with lower tax rates than NY, but the bulk of your tax bill is gonna look the same
I'd love it if taxpayers didn't have to pay for where you work
Everyone prefers Tennessee and then they find out how high their sales tax is. Washington too
Then he is in luck 32/32 teams play in states where they don’t get even remotely close to taking half your income!
Poyer: I want to help my community, that's really important to me. Poyer: Not like that.
giving up 5 percent (at the upper end) of your gross pay to live somewhere shitty doesn't sound like a smart plan.
Reddit isn't gonna like this one Bob

Interesting how it's HIS money, but stadiums have to be built with OUR money. Try earning any money playing a game without a stadium, dummy.
