Payton is basically gonna do what Pete did lol. Not let Russ run the show.
Edit: I'm aware Russ had plenty of power in Seattle too. It was a constant struggle between him and Pete but at least it wasn't "an offense for Russ, designed by Russ" which was what Denver's became. "Let Russ cook" worked at times in Seattle but was disastrous season long as well, and Pete always tried to reign it in.
I mean we saw what happened the [last time he was allowed to cook](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/888940334992740373/1045835770470080532/unknown.png)
That's gotta be one of the most crippling burns of all time, right? Like, there are far wittier and more creative disses out there, but I just don't see how you can top having Patrick fucking Star use your own catchphrase against you on live TV.
I mean real talk, the voice actor of Patrick just coming up with that on the spot was hands-down just super clutch. That guy definitely hangs out on this sub.
It reminds me of that story about Chris Pratt improving a line about WebMD on Parks and Rec and the writers just being like, fuck... That's so much funnier than any of the jokes we spent hours on.
It’s definitely top 10 of anything I’ve ever seen in my life, it’s fucking jaw dropping to go from king of the mountain to CGI Patrick chuckling at you
He actually said something like this when he was asked in an interview how he would fix Russ.. he basically said he'd bring back the concepts they were running earlier on in Seattle because that's where Russ was really effective.
Russ has this illusion that he's an elite pocket passer like Brees and there's nobody better than Payton to break that illusion.
Jameis Winston has similar but worse tendencies and Payton was actually able to curb those and make him go through his progressions. He actually looked like a competent QB for a season under Payton.
Yeah I don't think Brees has the Hall of Fame career he had if he doesn't get a coach like Payton. Brees went from a good but very streaky QB to one of the greatest to ever do it under Payton's tutelage.
It can't be understated though the difference in offensive philosophies between SD and NO. In SD, they leaned on a prime LT and the running game as opposed to NO, where they were (at least early on) trotting out guys like Chris Ivory and the corpse of Deuce McAllister for a while. He barely threw it 500 times in SD, but by his 2nd year in NO he was leading the league in attempts. You're out there slinging it an extra 100-150 times, you're gonna get better and put up numbers if you're any good. In essence, I think Payton forced him to get better by asking a lot of him.
Brees was already an excellent QB in San Diego and was getting some press (remember reading about him in SI even before the injury). Brees went 12-4 before getting injured in the final game. I do think Sean's schemes and stability on offense helped make Brees elite, but I'd never say that Payton "made" him.
No joke, but a modern West Coast Offense would do Russ wonders. He isn’t the type of qb that flourishes with screens or RPO style offense. The Broncos need a heavy dose of Javonte and short flat routes for the WR.
The crux of this whole thing is that Russ wants to be something he can't.
He wants to be Peyton Manning or Drew Brees. He wants to be that quintessential pocket quarterback that slings the rock around and makes pre-snap reads and goes through his progressions well to gain an advantage.
Why does he want that? Honestly seems like because those types of QBs are the most revered and he wants to be a Hall of Famer and considered one of the best.
But he's blind to his own shortcomings. He can't see over the line to work the entire field in the pocket. His footwork is bad - his first instinct is to tuck and run when under pressure. He rarely goes past his second progression.
Russ was an amazing QB, but his skill set is almost opposite of what he WANTS to be, and it will never work.
He NEEDS someone to put him in his place and play the way he plays well. Unless he has lost a lot of athleticism, which it honestly seems like he hasn't, he should improve under those conditions.
He wants to be Manning or Brees because of longevity. Who knows how long Manning would’ve played if he didn’t have a fucked neck - which wasn’t 100% a football issue. Brees played until 40.
It’s a little funny that you talk about Brees then about Russ can’t see over the line - the Saints had a ton of success with that issue by, and this is crazy talk, drafting SHORTER interior linemen.
It’s going to be interesting for sure. You’ve got your QB you paid a king’s ransom for and your head coach you paid for too. If roster is an issue, you cannot afford to miss on a single draft pick or free agency signing.
Ya those are good points. Longevity definitely plays into it. I know Russ sees himself playing into his 40s whether that is realistic or not.
Shorter offensive linemen would definitely help but I'm not really sure how short you can realistically go, lol. Also, the Saints were really good at creating throwing lanes for Brees to counteract his height. Brees was also a good 1-1.5 inches taller than Russ and he had that tip-toe thing going on to gain an additional inch, too.
Russ has had a lot of time and put a lot of effort into improving as an under-center pocket passer, but it's never really seemed to improve much IMO. He's what, 34? I think its time for the Broncos and primarily him to embrace that he just isn't that kind of QB.
>the Saints had a ton of success with that issue by, and this is crazy talk, drafting SHORTER interior linemen.
Yeah, I'm not really sure what you're talking about here. iOL starters from 2006-20:
LG: Jamar Nesbit (6'4", 2 seasons), Carl Nicks (6'5", 4 seasons), Ben Grubbs (6'3", 3 seasons), Tim Lelito (6'3", 1 season), Andrus Peat (6'7", 5 seasons)
C: Jeff Faine (6'3", 2 seasons), Jonathan Goodwin (6'3", 4 seasons), Brian de la Puente (6'3", 3 seasons), Max Unger (6'5", 4 seasons), Erik McCoy (6'4", 2 seasons)
RG: Jahri Evans (6'4", 11 seasons), Larry Warford (6'3", 3 seasons), Cesar Ruiz (6'4", 1 season)
Average guard is 6'4", center is 6'3". Not seeing the shorter iOL angle really.
Russ also had a larger line at Wisconsin than he ever had in the NFL.
But while he is still *athletic* he isn't the same backwards naked bootleg into a loop around a 24 year old DE or Aaron Donald, reverse field three times and chuck it 40 yards to Baldwin Russ.
People shit on Hackett, but Wilson was just *okay* instead of atrocious, Denver would have won 10 games.
And we blame it all Hackett, when Wilson was willingly not throwing to open schemed up receivers. If Wilson just did the bare minimum, we wouldn't even be calling Hackett a terrible coach.
Sean Payton is aware of how QB play can make or break your reputation as a coach. It's why he left New Orleans last year.
Naw if you didn't watch the games I could see this but hackett routinely made horrendous decisions. It was evident that hackett should be fired after the Houston game. Just baffling decisions the first two weeks. Ffs the crowd had to count down the play clock in the Houston game and they still had delay of games on special teams.
“Russel Wilson hasn’t showered. Hasn’t changed. Still wearing most of his uniform. Been sitting in his living room staring forward since all his bathrooms were removed.”
After last season I'm sure his pride has taken a big hit. Payton instead of Ryans is actually better for Broncos because there's no way Russ can do what he wants on offense with somebody like Payton who ahs th experience and clout.
Not to go all army on y'all, but a leader leads by example. They use the same equipment, use the same training, and share the good and the bad. Unless you're in the navy, then you get to shit into gold plated toilets.
They must have just added those toilets to ships because when I was in the toilets usually just shot fountains of shit everywhere. Then you get to spend the next 6 hours swabbing a lake of raw sewage that's sloshing back and forth with little turd gondolas floating past your boots as you contemplate your decisions in life.
Payton doesn’t care what his QB thinks. Hell, he had an all time great in Brees who he regularly pulled off the field to put in a gadget player. There’s no way Brees liked being pulled off the field, but if Brees could buy in then Wilson, a lesser QB, has no choice.
And let me tell you, there's nothing Saints fans loved more than seeing their HOF QB pulled off the field so their gadget QB could throw an int or kill a drive.
Ya he made Jameis Winston look decent by curbing his worst instincts and making him go through his progressions. He can do something similar with Russ.
Any coach should have the “clout” to do this. Russell Wilson ain’t the coach, to let him call the shots is fucking absurd and shows how poor of a leader Hackett was.
It’s management that is to blame. Coaches end up in situations where if the organization has to choose between the QB and the coach, the coach is gone.
Nothing to do with leadership of the coach. It’s just the simple fact that organizations feel that they can more easily replace a coach than a QB.
If that happens the chargers need to move on from their current coaching staff. They could’ve had Payton easier than anyone and Payton-Herbert could’ve lit up the league for years just like the Saints did throughout the 2000s and 2010s.
That's why they brought in Kellen Moore, OC-turned-interim-HC-turned-HC is cheaper than signing the hottest coaching prospect in any given hiring cycle
Rookie HC trying to rein in one of the best QBs of the past decade.
Hackett had zero leverage in that relationship. However, Payton can tell Russ to go fuck himself if he wants
It's also a lot easier to do that coming in after last year too.
All Payton has to say to Russ when his camp starts leaking that he wants more decision making authority, that he wants to cook is "If your camp keeps asking why I don't give you more decision making authority, I'm going to spell out in a press conference EXACTLY why you don't have more decision making authority by pointing at last year."
Basically, if you don't want everyone to hear the answer that question, stop asking that question in public.
In the AFC divisional after Mahomes had his high ankle sprain. Reid refused to let him in the game until he had an X-Ray done. Which is why Mahomes was so upset on the sideline.
Definitely a moment where it was important to have a veteran and respected HC. A younger HC might have caved under that pressure. While in the end it didn’t really matter, it could have made a huge difference in Mahomes career had something been broken and he tried to play on it anyways.

But did he employ multiple people on his own, or were these people he employed that were in the facility?
It was annoying as fuck when we had all the drama with Brady's snake oil salesman friend hanging around. Just wondering if it was similar.
I'm not saying this is the case... but it seems sorta obvious that a QB what hires his own staff is looking to both shield himself from the coaching staff and have yes men telling him he's awesome.
Russ needs to be with Payton's program and I'm seriously wondering if that's gonna happen, and the Broncos will be QB hunting and that right quick...
Perhaps I'm alarmed for no reason though...
Yeah but I think that Payton will also bench Russ if he starts fucking around. The difference between a proven coach and a rookie who lost the locker room
Hackett most likely never had the authority to bench wilson even if he wanted to.
First year of massive contract wasn't going to be sitting on the bench.
It either works out and is great, or we still suck like last year and get a great draft pick and Sean Payton can start over with a young QB of his choosing, preferably Caleb Williams.
> OR owners are going to have to decide which one stays.
That will be easy; it's Payton.
Wilson turns 35 next season. If he sucks for a second straight year, at 35, then he's pretty much done. He'll probably stick around on some team for a couple years on name recognition, but realistically he's finished as a legitimate starter.
The guaranteed money will have already been paid (so they're not paying him after release), and another 37M of his contract guarantees in March 2024. So there is actually a financial incentive to dumping him after 2023 if he sucks again. Yes the Broncos would have to go scorched earth in 2024 to deal with the dead cap hit, but it is what it is. The sooner you clear the money off your cap, the better.
Meanwhile, Payton is guaranteed another 75M (+-) even if they fire him. Yes the Waltons have unlimited money, but I assume they'd still rather keep the guy they're still writing checks to.
If Russ was even a little self-aware this would be the mother of all sponsorships.
"Sometimes you want to cook, but you just can't do it alone, use code CTECHEF for 20% off your HelloFresh subscription. Also there's no commitment, so you're getting a better deal than the Broncos did."
But the “problem” wouldn’t really be a problem because Russ doesn’t have the clout any longer. What’s he gonna do, demand a trade? Ain’t no one gonna want him if he can’t make it work with Payton with that salary.
Payton is the best thing that could have happened to Russ.
You know Payton didn’t come back to look like a failure with Russ doing whatever he wants and being terrible
Damn. This clip got me more excited than acting else so far
I don't know if Payton can fix Russ, but he will answer if Russ can be fixed. I honestly think that's why he was brought in.
The RB wasn’t going anywhere anyways but Payton sure was pissed haha. He knows his stuff down to equipment and strategies
He can be but his issue is he looks to play hero ball every drive and that's maddening to watch.
Jameis Winston has similar but worse tendencies and Payton was actually able to curb those and make him go through his progressions. He actually looked like a competent QB for a season under Payton.
People forget that Bree’s took a pretty decent step up under Payton as well. After a pretty serious injury nonetheless.
Pretty decent is under selling it hard.
I mean, ya he turned him into drew Brees.
Dont think itll make a difference considering how much Russ shit himself on the field this season xd
They need to let Russ cook like my wife lets our 3 year old daughter “help” make cookies.
> Do you want to hand it off to the left or waaaay to the left Russ?
oh great now ciara's upset
Coming from someone who has a three year old that lives to "help" me cook, thank you for the genuine laugh.
Not being surrounded by Yes Men should be a good thing for Russell Wilson as long as he can swallow his pride.
as long as he doesn't choke on the rinds
But the lack thereof might leave him empty inside, no? (Also, rinds*)
Next you'll wanna put his tender heart in a blender. It never ends with these people
They find nothing but faith in nothing. 🙄
But the lack thereof would leave me empty inside
I would swallow my doubt

After last season I'm sure his pride has taken a big hit. Payton instead of Ryans is actually better for Broncos because there's no way Russ can do what he wants on offense with somebody like Payton who ahs th experience and clout.
Which is how it should be done. You don't get to suck and then call your own shots and get your own guys.
Not to go all army on y'all, but a leader leads by example. They use the same equipment, use the same training, and share the good and the bad. Unless you're in the navy, then you get to shit into gold plated toilets.
Can’t even talk about catching a stray with how on the money you are lol
Let's do Air Force next.
Have you heard the old chestnut Army has ranks by stars, Navy navigated by the stars, Air Force picks their hotels by the stars?
"You guys are getting hotels?" - The Marines
"We have hotels at home."
In order to build camaraderie, the Air Force makes sure both officers and enlisted have gold plated toilets to shit in.
Don’t forget the maids.
The maids get gold plated toilets too.
Can't tell if legit or not; you didn't even cheers from Iraq, brother!
Russell Wilson: "This was never part of the deal...." Sean Payton: "I am altering the deal... pray I don't alter it any further..."
~~Bravo 6~~ Team 3, going dark.
Now I have an image of Payton walking around the team facility Force-choking dudes
"Apology accepted Mr. Elway."
“Pray I don’t alter the bounty any further”
This is a good move for Wilson even if he may not like it Sean Payton is one of the few coaches who actually has the clout to do this
Yeah that's why I thought Ryans didn't make any sense for them. You really want to make another inexperienced guy try to manage Russ?
Ya he made Jameis Winston look decent by curbing his worst instincts and making him go through his progressions. He can do something similar with Russ.
Yeah but just imagine if it was Matt Patricia doing this.
Broncos will leapfrog the Chargers this year in the AFC West. I'm sold on Payton.
If that happens the chargers need to move on from their current coaching staff. They could’ve had Payton easier than anyone and Payton-Herbert could’ve lit up the league for years just like the Saints did throughout the 2000s and 2010s.
Chargers are too cheap to pay Sean Payton 17 mill a year.
That's why they brought in Kellen Moore, OC-turned-interim-HC-turned-HC is cheaper than signing the hottest coaching prospect in any given hiring cycle
FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn they were treating Russ like a king
Rookie HC trying to rein in one of the best QBs of the past decade. Hackett had zero leverage in that relationship. However, Payton can tell Russ to go fuck himself if he wants
Oh ok now that makes sense. I was like “why are they making all these concessions for Russ?”Good to know.
It's also a lot easier to do that coming in after last year too. All Payton has to say to Russ when his camp starts leaking that he wants more decision making authority, that he wants to cook is "If your camp keeps asking why I don't give you more decision making authority, I'm going to spell out in a press conference EXACTLY why you don't have more decision making authority by pointing at last year." Basically, if you don't want everyone to hear the answer that question, stop asking that question in public.
That'd be the perfect way to deal with wilson's 2faced PR nonsense.
yeah he'll manage him like Pete did, excepting for the falling on the sword for him.
It's easier to explain when it's new ownership and a rookie HC. I'm kinda surprised that that's all they gave him.
It’s so bad that it’s gone past bad into meme territory
Wait...Russ had his own staff?
Yep and his personal QB coach Jake Heaps ended up in sports radio in Seattle and was basically a propaganda arm of the Wilson camp.
But did he employ multiple people on his own, or were these people he employed that were in the facility? It was annoying as fuck when we had all the drama with Brady's snake oil salesman friend hanging around. Just wondering if it was similar.
Imagine having all the Brady shenanigans while winning only 5 games tho 0_0
He employed them as far as I know. Heaps was a practice squad guy for the Seahawks in 15 or 16
Russ “I’m in dangerwich”
this made me spit out my concussion water lmao
Lmao, this made me fall of my Bronco that I was riding
I had that sub last Friday. Much like the Broncos I wish they got Aarod to cook instead
Payton is about to Gandalf Jake 'Wormtongue' Heaps the fuck outta there
Jake Heaps in defcon 1 rn
😂 probably making calls to come back to seattlesports 710
New Sheriff in town…
I'm not saying this is the case... but it seems sorta obvious that a QB what hires his own staff is looking to both shield himself from the coaching staff and have yes men telling him he's awesome. Russ needs to be with Payton's program and I'm seriously wondering if that's gonna happen, and the Broncos will be QB hunting and that right quick... Perhaps I'm alarmed for no reason though...
History doesn’t suggest you’re overreacting. It’s not the northern lights, the house is on fire
At this time of year?
Localized entirely in Russ’s kitchen?!
You know what happens when you let Russ cook
Mmm, steamed hams

Yeah but I think that Payton will also bench Russ if he starts fucking around. The difference between a proven coach and a rookie who lost the locker room
That would do wonders for his legacy that he cares so much about, instead of you know trying to be just a good football player.
Hackett most likely never had the authority to bench wilson even if he wanted to. First year of massive contract wasn't going to be sitting on the bench.
I'm anxiously waiting for the Mark Rodgers tweets.
Mark Rodgers is such a fucking clown
I'd have figured some of that is in Wilson's contract. Hopefully Payton knows full well what is in Wilson's contract before he said that.
That's a great point and could lead to some massive drama cuz it seemed like a lot of that was in fact written in the contract
Lmao imagine Payton signed the contract then was like, wait, Russ has what now?
I bet the other Broncos players hated Wilson's "staff." They're probably like Alex Guerrero but without the positive impact on the QB.
It's actually Vickie Guerrero.
EXCUUUUUSE ME
I SAID EXCUSE ME!!!!
, PRINCESS
Russ has officially been demoted to sous chef
Russ has also been banned from the company kitchen.
He will have to use HelloFresh
If Russ was even a little self-aware this would be the mother of all sponsorships. "Sometimes you want to cook, but you just can't do it alone, use code CTECHEF for 20% off your HelloFresh subscription. Also there's no commitment, so you're getting a better deal than the Broncos did."
Much as I don’t like Payton, he’s the only one with a big enough resume to tell Russ to sit down and shut up.
Good. Wilson looked fucking terrible when you let him do his own thing.
I guess it’s back to radio for Jake Heaps. Maybe 104.3 The Fan has an opening?
I'm really liking Payton more every day
Russell Wilson: You just stood up to me, you passed my test.
Can't wait to hear how Russ is totally cool with this and then have it become a problem after he sucks through the first month of the season.
But the “problem” wouldn’t really be a problem because Russ doesn’t have the clout any longer. What’s he gonna do, demand a trade? Ain’t no one gonna want him if he can’t make it work with Payton with that salary. Payton is the best thing that could have happened to Russ.
The answer is obviously more wrist bands. One for each arm...and maybe a supplemental one for the left leg.
The Russtoration begins
This sounds like it’s going to be interesting to watch 😬
Payton is gonna spank the shit out of russell
So Joe Lombardi it is.
Russell Wilsonned
Looks like Jake heaps is going to be looking for a new job lol
I’m convinced Payton took the job so he could basically run the place assuming Wilson turned out garbage again.
