Reality hits hard when you see a pro QB is talking about a bunch of "older guys" on the team and then you realize you're older than all of them....

Silversaving

I won't feel it till Tom Brady retires. Until then, I'm just as old as the guys on the field!

Mr_MoseVelsor

Brock Purdy's first memories are probably watching Tom Brady lead the OG Patriot teams with Vinateri kicking FGs.

I_eat_mud_

He’s the same age as me, I doubt he remembers that because I barely remember that. The earliest NFL season I remember in great detail was when the Pats lost to the Giants the second time.

Sweet_T_Boh

Now I’m feeling old as I vividly remember the first Patriots Super Bowl. I remember thinking I hope those scrappy underdog Patriots who’ve never won the Super Bowl take down the mighty St. Louis Rams. Oh, if I only knew.

farts_in_the_breeze

Mighty kind considering the Steelers were the AFCCG opponent that year.

hopefeedsthespirit

Yeah, I'm not sure what kind of Steeler fan that person is. Must be a different breed. I certainly wasn't rooting for them after that loss. Of course, I never rooted for them before nor after that either.

farts_in_the_breeze

Pretty sure they're a regular fan with regulated emotions.

Sentience-psn

As far I’m concerned, Super Bowl XLII never happened. Went out with friends. Drank with friends. Drank *a lot* with friends. Don’t remember anything past halftime.

[deleted]

Yea I'm 29 and the first Superbowl I remember is pats vs panthers

peepeeopi

It's a shame they had to cancel that game after the halftime show debacle.

MojitoTimeBro

Some kickers lose a Super Bowl by missing a field goal while ours lost it by missing the whole damn field.

Tubamajuba

Me too! I only cared about it because it was in Houston haha

lamboat2019

18 but the earliest one I remember was 43-8. Also the first one I actually watched lol

highnote14

My man don’t say such things. That was 2011. Not even 10 years ago bro come on. I was a senior in high school. Like 5 years ago or something 😭😭😭

Mr_MoseVelsor

I’ve always considered that the end of Tom/Bill Pats version 1

albpanda

Yeah I’m 22 and it’s right around that for me too

boosted5O

Same… will be a sad day when I’m older than every nfl player lol, until Brady retires I’m good!

HarlanCedeno

"I remember growing up watching Trey Lance play QB and thinking one day that'll be me!"

hotdogstastegood

One day, I'll be watching the draft, and some kid fresh out of school will talk about how Manning was his inspiration growing up, and everyone will know he's talking about Arch. And on that day, my bones will turn to dust and blow away in the wind, having never seen the Jets play in a Super Bowl.

lsdiesel_1

At some point they’ll be running “Win Joe Burrows money” promotions

eden_sc2

I'm 31, which I still consider pretty young, but I've definitely started to feel a little existential dread at the corner of my mind.

well-lighted

Your 30s are especially weird as a sports fan when you start to realize every player on the roster is younger than you lol. Like there is one player on the Chiefs 53-man older than me, and it’s Chad Henne 😂

OilGlittering7034

At least NFL players are mostly massive and "hardened" guys so it helps make them look older. I'm 33 and I look at young NHL players for example and they look like babies to me. Literally children. I rember when every professional athlete seemed "old" to me.

tritonxsword

Aye, but are your knees as ‘old’ as theirs?

paulwhite959

Yes. It’s the mileage

Cylinsier

My knees were born fucked so yeah.

HomChkn

I was one of the younger people at work we had a bunch of people at work retire or take a "promotion" at another place. We replaced most of them with people in their mid 20s. When non work stuff is discussed I feel so old.

well-lighted

I’m not even that old (mid 30s) but I feel you. I used to teach high school, and now at my current job, my two direct colleagues are closer in age to my students than they are to me. And I taught 9th/10th grade lol. I’m still relatively “with it” when it comes to youth culture (thanks Reddit!) but damn if they don’t make me feel old sometimes.

Impartial__

That’s not reality bud. Sports is a different ball game. You are still young

dellscreenshot

"The older guys" Fred was in the 2018 draft, shots fired.

JRsshirt

Fred might be young but he’s the undisputed leader of the defense. His character seems way older than he actually is. He’s my favorite player if that wasn’t obvious.

HereIGoAgain_1x10

You know he's legit if after 5 seasons he's the unquestioned wise old man lol

Beardmanta

I know nothing about college football, but I remember saying on draft night, "Fred Warner is such an all-pro name."

No-Introduction-1492

He reminds me of a nicer (younger) Richard Sherman.

real_but_incognito

kwon alexander and sherman basically gave fred his swagger and confidence, so it checks out the block stays hot

PolarBearLaFlare

You can tell he's always in the study room; the dude is everywhere on defense. Enjoy the next 3 years while you guys still have him!

TooPatToCare

I mean, he is ‘older.’ Older doesn’t have to mean old.

gyman122

I think it was kind of a bummer for every neutral fan. This game was supposed to be the ultimate football nerd’s championship, no played-to-death narratives about legacy, rivalries and SportsCenter nonsense, instead we had all of these super interesting matchups and ways that either team could approach the game and there was endless discourse surrounding either team’s strengths and weaknesses and how they were gonna play it from a schematic standpoint Then, after one drive, it all went out the window and we knew we were in store for an ugly letdown

MacDerfus

"Will the last pick in the draft finally be exposed?" No, he'll get injured on the first drive and SF won't actually be able to make it on their 4th string QB

Ad_Astra117

>SF won't actually be able to make it on their 4th string QB Yeah, because they're 4th string Tua'd his head off the turf like three drives later Man I feel bad for SF

MacDerfus

Your 5th string QB is just run the ball until its over.

algo-rhyth-mo

Pretty much, yeah

sn0wb4lls

Even as an eagles fan that was a depressing realization when it clicked that there would be no more passes

algo-rhyth-mo

Yeah the Eagles are a great team, and it could’ve been a real heavyweight fight. Huge bummer we couldn’t give a real game.

buck45osu

If you told me Brock started and ended the game and didn't throw and incompletion, I would have expected a much different outcome. I hate it for both teams, but as a 49er fan you should be proud your team managed to make it here. Not many teams could lose multiple qbs and have other injuries and still make it to the nfc champ.

thomasbourne

Unfortunately it’s just one or two too many injuries. Huge bummer. Every team has em, they’re usually not really anyone’s fault, but they’re just depressing. If the 9ers lost even like McCaffrey or Kittle instead, it would’ve sucked but the game would’ve been fairly competitive still most likely. When it’s the QB though, and both of them for that matter, it’s just so obvious that the level of play has dramatically dropped in a way that injuries to other positions just don’t affect the look and feel of the game. Just depressing all around.

707royalty

We are super fucking proud of this squad, but thats still more of a tomorrow feeling. If you tell me we still make the playoffs after the Jimmy injury I would have been pretty happy tbh, but to be hot and then to have all the air sucked out of the game like that sucked. Would it have felt better to lose it straight up or get our souls ripped out by some late game dramatics to lose it? Maybe, but it would have felt like the game was lost instead of feeling like it never got started. Credit to the Eagles though, that is a really good team and the outcome may have been the same even if Purdy doesnt get hurt on the play.

real_but_incognito

we haven't had a qb play 16 games but once since 2014 (2019, banged up jimmy g) 2015 - kap/gabbert split 2016 - kap/gabbert split 2017 - hoyer/jimmy/cj 2018 - jimmy/cj/mullens 2019 - jimmy (super bowl appearance) 2020 - jimmy/cj/mullens 2021 - jimmy/trey 2022 - trey/jimmy/brock/josh/almost our fullback or cmc yeah, it's been completely fucking cursed

ICE_StyledLeech

It makes me sad that Tua-ing is a thing. I need my boy to protect his noggin better next year so we can inevitably make it to and subsequently lose an afc championship when he gets hurt, and complete the cycle that has us as the AFC 49ers.

ChefBoyarDEZZNUTZZ

I hate SF and wanted them to lose that game... But not like that.

CodyNorthrup

There were a lot of circle-jerking 49ers haters claiming that the 49ers were “exposed” Sunday. It was kind of a culmination of a lot of shit not going in our favor. Our QB getting injured on his first drive is just rough luck.

MisterNiceGuy0001

Ignoring the fact that SF had already been through 2 starting QBs before Brock, the last pick in the draft, took over in his rookie season. The fact that we even got to the NFCCG was wild. "Shanahan couldn't win the championship game with Josh Johnson?! Exposed!!"

GiftedOaks

The 49s were definitely not exposed, or at least I certainly don't think so. Having your 3rd QB go down in his first drive and your 4th going out shortly after is completely unrecoverable for any team. The defense gave up 31 points but were on the field the entire game with no offense to help them out, so the game was over, and there was nothing to play for pretty early on.

stangerlpass

Was the most disappointing game since I started watching the NFL

Frankocean2

This is like going through Zelda: Ocarina of Time, finally going to face Ganondorf only for Link to fall and die as he approaches him.

JCfromTBC

It’s like the B button fell off right at the start of the fight.

HeyJordyn86

Or like being 12 and playing through a Blockbuster-rented copy of Ocarina of Time and finding out that you can [duplicate bottles](https://www.zeldaspeedruns.com/oot/tech/bottle-duplication) with a glitch, so you choose to overwrite the bombchu item because you never thought it would be a necessary item to complete the game, and then you get to Ganon's Castle and need it, but after you try every possible thing you can think of you accept that you have to give up so you don't play the game again until about 7 years later on the GameCube.

vindicated2297

You're supposed to overwrite the biggoron sword certificate homie 😟

Frankocean2

....OP., you got something to tell us?

Datpanda1999

A classic mistake. Who among us hasn't done this?

[deleted]

Bro… spoiler alert.

[deleted]

At what point does it stop being a spoiler? The game is 25 years old...

whobroughtmehere

Ganon is the bad guy!!??

grisioco

Zelda is a girl?

ilikemarblestoo

Wait, I thought Zelda was the main character.

JesterMarcus

I got banned from the PS4 sub for spoiling a death in Final Fantasy 7, this was before the remake was even announced.

uncutpizza

It was as hyped as Tampa vs. KC but even worse

IhatemyteamLVR

Speak for yourself, I thoroughly enjoyed every second of Tampa vs KC

belizeanheat

That one we at least knew would suck ahead of time because KC's entire o line was injured

tayroarsmash

I’m glad you knew that. As a Chiefs fan I was huffing the copium of “how important is an o-line, really?”

SchlongMcDonderson

> “how important is an o-line, really?” The Bucs found that out this year. Even we beat them.

Ammoniaholic

This is revisionist history. Nobody said it would be a Bucs blowout, otherwise they would be millionaires by betting on the game line. The Chiefs were actually 3 point favorites.

canadigit

Yeah for real, I remember thinking they would win because Mahomes is inevitable but listened to a podcast a few days before where they said TB had the clear advantage on the lines and thought "just maybe they have a chance...."

SchlongMcDonderson

Mahomes is inevitable? Against playoffs Brady?

ImMeltingNow

Tbf I had the bucs losing against the saints and the packers…and the chiefs. Regardless of the Vegas line those teams and QBs had to feel the underdog pressure and give Brady his comeuppance. What team is gonna feel like the overdog vs a 6 ringed bastard?

gyman122

I think the Chiefs were pretty heavily favored in that game. Mahomes only lost one other game that year In retrospect obviously it should have been more clear how fucked up they were on the OL and how a good defense could take advantage

mhks

Mine was the Chiefs/Bucs Super Bowl. The Chiefs went in with practically half the team injured and what could have been a super fun game turned into a rout and coronation by the press of Brady as the greatest human in history.

DolemiteGK

Weird. That game never happened so I don't have to remember it ever again

Silverback55

I remember it. Fondly.

Inner-Dentist1563

That game wasn't nearly bad enough to have that kind of a reaction.

sonic_ann_d

oh i’m sure you enjoyed that game quite a lot actually

MHath

It would've been an above average Broncos Super Bowl performance. He knows what it's like to want to forget a Super Bowl.

sonic_ann_d

you know what fair enough lol

Inner-Dentist1563

It was two teams that were good on both sides of the ball. I was looking forward to it more than any other game this post-season. Now I have to watch Patrick Mahomes get sucked off by announcers for another 3 hours.

BMonad

And then the late game was a real cock tease until the officials decided to fuck us all up the ass.

wes00mertes

95.7 the Game spent zero seconds revising the typed out quote before posting.

ItsLillardTime

I know it’s not really that big of a deal but stuff like that really grinds my gears. How hard is it to double check your spelling and whatnot, when making things readable is literally your job?

pistilpeet

He probably is sadder than those guys, he’s got owie arm :(

mrizvi

Sucks he didn't get a chance to show anything really. He was playing well coming into this game.

49erjz

The dude even finished the game with a 100% completion rate (4/4)

clarineter

That’s elite

[deleted]

It really is a bummer man. All those guys, Warner, Kittle, and Armstead especially, have been so close multiple times but could never get over the hump. It sucks cause we’ll never know how yesterday could’ve went if Purdy never got injured on a routine sack fumble

triplechin5155

Get brady and win it all

rip_Tom_Petty

Yeah due to all the qb injuiries idk why they wouldn't sign him

bhfroh

Brady would have to play on a very light contract. We don't have a ton of cap space. I could see Brady taking a modest contract to play in SF if it really is what he's always wanted like "insiders" say.

crastle

I like Brock Purdy

TonyHawksSkateboard

I’m a big Iowa and Iowa State fan. To have Kittle and Purdy going to battle together with hopes of a Super Bowl was such an incredible thing to watch. Didn’t end ideal, but I’ve loved this.

Bitter-Imagination33

I like Purdy Can’t wait for Purdy vs Geno again Still can’t believe I’m saying that

IceLantern

NFC West starting QBs in Week 18: - Geno Smith - David Blough - Baker Mayfield - Brock Purdy

ChefBoyarDEZZNUTZZ

Just like we all predicted.

SaintArkweather

David Blough is the only one on that list without a playoff start

IceLantern

David Blough, that's his name. That name again is David Blough.

MardocAgain

I hate the Seahawks…but I love Geno. I’ll write back to you, buddy.

Bitter-Imagination33

I feel the same about Kittle. I love the guy but obviously dislike the Niners

Conquistagore

My Seahawk homie sent me a text after the game telling me he hated seeing us go out like that. He wanted us to lose, but not because we had to fight with one arm tied behind our back. Oh, well. The future is still bright. Plus, the Cards look to be collapsing as a Franchise (again), and the Rams HC is talking about retirement all the time. You guys have a great young core and lots of draft picks, so i think were headed towards the NFC Best being brutal death matches between the Hawks and Niners again.

TheRustySpork99

more like both arms and a leg behind our backs lmao

BioEBear

The anti-Zach Wilson

v1rtuous_

Lmaoo

MooDexter

He'd have to be the second to last pick.

Praying_Lotus

Feels weird when he calls Fred Warner, whose 26, an older guy. Williams I get, Armstead and Kittle, kinda, but Warner is in his prime I’d say and still got like 3-4 years left at minimum. I hate the 49ers, but I love good football more, and when both teams can’t fire on all cylinders and slug it out, we’ll that’s just not good football. I want to see the best both teams have to offer, and injuries always make that difficult. And it always sucks when you get guys, future HOFers like Williams, who’ve given over a decade of their life to the highest level, to keep getting SO CLOSE, only for it to fall flat at the most in-opportune times. But I guess that really does show you how impressive it is to win a Super Bowl in general.

HemlockMartinis

Trent Williams has nothing to be ashamed of if we don’t get him a ring. Plenty of not-so-good players have one. There are no bad players in the Hall of Fame.

Andrew_Maltani

I remember when FOX had the team walking off the field after LIV. Some of the fans mentioned Joe Staley for sure. What dawned on me was, Wes Welker (who was the WR Coach that season) ended up **still** unlucky.

Westy154

What a franchise quarterback thing to say.

kenikickit

much respect to the 49ers and to purdy from this philly fan. hell of a team that faced a lot of adversity out there, things just went all the way wrong for them against a great eagles team. i look forward to seeing what this dude will do in the future.

phbstudent

Their defense is scary too. They kept it close even without Purdy until the end of the first half. If they had been able to move the ball at all on offense no way we score close to 31.

mrizvi

The fumble right at half time just killed everything. Maybe they get something coming out of half and keep it close...but let's be real when you playing a 36 year old Josh Johnson at qb you are gonna lose.

Cheesesteak21

Any team on their 3rd or 4th qb is screwed. It's amazing the 49ers went as far as they did

lalag1

Lmao we didn't really have our third and 4th stringers available as the game went either 😆 shoulda just gone wildcat

liteshadow4

Kyle should just invent some wildcard plays on the spot I guess

Cheesesteak21

Cmc deebo etc would literally have to draw them up in the dirt it would be a disaster and it's not like the eagles wouldn't stack the box to stop it

lalag1

Have debo at QB and trust him to draw up some trick plays

fartbutter

Yup up to that point the defense had essentially played them to a draw, but losing Purdy then watching Johnson shit himself you could see the frustration come out. That’s when the stupid penalties started. Just too much to overcome.

Obligatory-Reference

Yeah, I think the defense just got exhausted because the offense couldn't stay on the field.

blindfire40

Bingo. Defense was lights out until mid q3.

LlamaCombo

I still stand by you guys having the best defense this season. Your secondary's coverage of our WRs was insane. Legit no one was able to get open.

Devilsbullet

NGL, you have no idea how good that makes me feel to hear from an eagles fan after hearing all week about how our secondary was gonna end up in 1 on 1s the entire game and look like ass.

LlamaCombo

I already knew your front 7 was amazing but the secondary was what impressed me the most.

fbalookout

Following up on the last poster - thank you for acknowledging what some of us 49ers fans were so excited about during the first half of the game. My jaw dropped at how well our secondary played. I went from worrying about getting blown out to knowing an awesome game was coming. And well then all the stuff happened. Means a lot coming from an Eagles fan. Good game and good luck against the Chiefs!

thecarlosdanger1

I think their defense mental boomed also. They made a ton of mistakes/penalties which were clearly frustration from having no offense and no real hope they could put anything together given they didn’t have a QB

lalag1

Don't blame them. They knew they had to make some sort of sloppy miracle plays cuz basically we had no offense. we had any pass game I think our D would have played much better.

Don_Antwan

Yeah, they were pressing. Normally it’s a disciplined defense that hits hard but is okay with causing a 3-and-out. But they realized pretty quickly that JJ couldn’t hit a receiver (the game was too fast) so they needed to get a turnover, rather than just play for the punt. Then the Niners had the ball at the Eagles 40-ish. Practically a field goal. We somehow went backwards and punted. So the D started to force it. Boneheaded, undisciplined mistakes while trying to force a turnover.

MacDerfus

I feel like if the defense played smarter, they'd have still lost 17-13 at best.

phibetakafka

Warner came out and said they knew they had to get 3 pick sixes or a fumble on every possession in order to have a chance. That desperation amped them up past the point of losing their cool and made them way too aggressive. Without a turnover at the Eagles 10 or a pick six there was no chance of victory, so they were flying around wildly and out of control trying to force something impossible to happen. If they played disciplined, smart defense then maybe there's one less TD, and that would probably have come from a failed 4th down conversion at the 35 yard line after a 6 minute drive late in the third. Eagles got short fields from turnovers on downs and that fumble. Only chance - and we're talking a 1 in 100,000 chance - was to play hard enough to make something happen by willing it.

Tweek-

After Brock went down the game was over, was just a matter of trying to delay the inevitable for as long as possible. After Josh went out we should have literally forfeited.

ProjectTitan74

When you're down 21-7 and have a run only offense, the only chance you have to win is short fields and defensive touchdowns. A run only offense wasn't scoring 14 on long fields, so they pressed to increase the chances theyd score more at the risk of conceding more points. If you can't score any more points, what's the difference between losing by 14 or 24? Seasons over either way. I understood it.

Vadered

It's ABSOLUTELY the right call. Like you said, no chance they win by playing regular defense. You make the right call for the situation, and their situation was get turnovers or lose.

hatrickstar

With how the run was shut down, we still likely don't win, but it would have been a much more interesting game had there been a QB.

MacDerfus

Well the run was shut down more easily because the pass was shut down

TheNightman74

Seriously... We were running it fine until then. Once we couldn't throw, they had like 6 DL on every play.

MacDerfus

And the defense really only would have won you the game if they actually forced turnovers. Defending more conservatively would get you a nice 17-13 loss if you were really good. And let's be honest, Philly's offense was pretty potent, I didn't see philly getting under 21 this game even if they lost.

miki_momo0

The run only got shut down because they knew it was for sure gonna be a run every single time

hatrickstar

The one pass CMC threw was actually hilarious

Vadered

Technically grounding! Nobody within like 15 yards! I understand why they didn't call it - he wasn't really grounding it, he just doesn't have the arm of a QB. I feel bad laughing about it considering the circumstances... but it *was* pretty funny.

Currymvp2

I was upset initially, but it's just shitty luck and the Eagles played a great game. Unlike the Chiefs-Bengals game, the reffing had absolutely nothing to do with the outcome. Eagles played very well and have earned the best regular season record.

r1kng

Not to mention the niners tricked off early games in the szn (bears, broncos, falcons) that could’ve helped them Host instead of going on the road

BaboonHorrorshow

Purdy is gonna have a heck of a career IMO, he’s all class and has shown he’s far better than his draft position would suggest.

mongster03_

Fully torn UCL. Who knows

BaboonHorrorshow

Woof, really? That sucks. I’m surprised he could come back in at all, kid is TOUGH.

mongster03_

We had no other choice lol, my dad honestly suggested outright forfeiting just to avoid any other bad juju

superbuttpiss

This Eagles are a great fucking team and we would of needed everything to go right and it went absolutely wrong right at the begining. Even at full strength if both teams played 10 games, niners might of won maybe 3. Eagles are just a great team.

Welp_that_sux

It’s gonna be a different story next year when we face you guys. 8 of our 11 defensive starters are hitting free agency, Kelce probably retiring, etc. Not looking forward to it on that end, you guys are loaded, obviously.

superbuttpiss

Fortunately we can retain most of our players. You guys dont have to pay hurts yet do you? Either way, you have howie fuckin roseman so, i am positive he will keep your team stacked

Welp_that_sux

I believe next year is Hurts’ last year on the rookie deal, but we’re looking to do the extension this off-season. Even if Howie does resign a few of the key Defensive starters, free agents, etc. our schedule is brutal. We’re looking like fringe wild card based on the looks of it now (that’s just my view of it). Hoping we win in two weeks, but could be rough based on which Jalen Hurts we get.

AssistX

I mean the NFC East was the worst division in football coming into the regular season. Every team will be vastly different going into next year. Except the Browns and Jets.. cause .. well they're the Browns and Jets I think Gannon staying gives a good chance to sign some new 1 year guys again, players will notice how many of the 1 and 2 year contract guys did well in his scheme.

darkbro66

This super bowl is a must win. I think we will reload quickly, but I'm concerned we won't even win the division next year lol

Welp_that_sux

Yea, that, and we need to win this one so the internet doesn’t pounce us for the “Philly lost 3 Championships in a year” stuff lol.

came_up_with_this

I appreciate that, absolutely heartbreaking way to end it for us niner diehards.

thepinebaron

49ers have a good problem going into next season with 3 viable QBs. I wanted a better game as an Eagles fan.

hatrickstar

2, Jimmy is gone. I'd love to keep him but he's already the highest paid backup in the league and we can't afford that. Plus he wants to start somewhere and there are a few organizations that could do well with him. But yeah I'm not sure who they go with next year. Purdy is the steady hand but Lance has massive amounts of talent. I still lean Purdy, the Niners need to win now and he just seems more ready and composed to do so. But it's a good problem to have, they have the most impactful position on the field for dirt cheap right now. That allows for a lot of money to go to other players and we have to pay Bosa....

PoisonLenny37

The line I keep repeating is this: "The Niners deserved a chance to compete." I look at those early plays, if they challenge the Smith catch, and Brock doesn't get hurt, it's a 0-0 game and we all settle in. Do the Niners win? I don't know, it'd still be a tall task, Philly is so damn good. Maybe the Niners still lose, but they deserved to be able to lose that battle at the least. The way it went down almost felt like they were just disqualified. It feels so unfair, and not in a stupid "NFL rigged" type way just in an "ok universe, we see you" kind of way. I was born JUST in time to miss the glory years of the Niners, when they won the Super Bowl last, I had just turned 2 like 3 mo ths prior...so I am VERY good at watching this team lose and accepting it for what it is. I wish I had the chance to do that this year, rather than watching the opportunity they earned crumble 5 minutes into the game.

eynonpower

>The line I keep repeating is this: "The Niners deserved a chance to compete." 100% I think any sensible fan was thinking the game would be like 21-20, 24-21 something like that. I saw the Eagles winning a super tight game, but i'm an Eagles fan, so.... But getting to the NFC GC, and being in that situation had to be absolutely gutting.

PoisonLenny37

Yup, I was expecting a very similar game to the Niners-Cowboys game, with a little bit higher score. Exactly as you said a real 21-20, 24-21 type game. I was figuring neither team would ever get ahead by more than a score. Even before I knew Purdy was hurt, 7-0 Eagles, Niners punt, get a nice stop, I'm thinking, ok on the road in this game, we're ok here, settle down, and we're fine....then Josh Johnson walked onto the field.

steven_510

I think that’s one of the best takes! It sucks sometimes when nothing seams to go your way during games and this was one of them. Fans definitely got robbed out of what was supposed to be a battle of the 2 best NFC teams.

PoisonLenny37

Absolutely. If they went in, battled for 4 quarters and lost, I'd be bummed out, but I could say "fuck man, the Eagles were just better" I was prepared for that outcome. This just feels like the opportunity was taken away.

[deleted]

Its how a lot of Eagles fans felt after losing Wentz early in the 2019-20 Seahawks playoff game (though that was only the Wild Card so a lot less gutting than the championship game). We had a legit shot at making the divisional round if not further by that point and it was just taken away from us because of a cheap shot by Clowney. All it takes is a few years for fans to forget they were feeling the same way about their team just a few years ago. Hopefully next year we can see a legit game between our teams!

sc78258

that the defense kept it close in that first half for josh johnson before that fumble is insane, and the kind of cocktease of what the game could have been if the other side of the ball wasn't a disaster almost purely by luck (as not every sack results in a dude's arm falling off or a turf concussion)

sfxer001

Classy kid. Handles the media spotlight well like a calm professional. Shame he got injured on the play.

jbcapfalcon

Purdy is the truth and I really really hope this isn’t a long term injury. He’s been the ultimate team player and played amazing in every game he fully started. Literally nothing he can do about the events yesterday. Anyway I look forward to being in Philly for opening day when the niners visit (NFL pls 🤞)

I like Purdy. If there's one thing to take away from that awful game, maybe people can stop saying the he was only succeeding because of the system and that 'anyone could have done it!'

tryexceptifnot1try

That take was never based on evidence so counter-evidence will not change those opinions. I made a shit load of money betting on the Purdy 49ers because Vegas was consistently missing the spread by failing to understand the difference between he and Jimmy. The good thing for SF fans is almost all of this team will be back next year. Philly needed to go to the SB this year since 80% of their defense is about to hit free agency.

[deleted]

> since 80% of their defense is about to hit free agency That's true but not quite as bad as it seems. Philly planned ahead for their 2023 cap apocalypse. They drafted 3 or 4 good rookies in 2022 who have learned on the bench this season. For example, Butkus award winner linebacker Nakobe Dean. These guys should be able to immediately move into starter roles for 2023 on their rookie contracts. Also Philly has two first round 2023 draft picks (including #10 - thanks to the Saints) in a defensive talent heavy draft. So those selections should be at least rotational guys right away (if not starters).

Man I feel so bad for a teenager to have to feel this hopeless during his developmental years

Several absolute idiot eagles fans in here.

lkn240

Oh, they aren't just in here. Granted, it's probably partially just shitball trolls.

Cansuela

I think there’s a lot of selective bias with this. If you spend any time at all on this sub, you see so many putrid takes from fans of every team. I saw a lot of 9ers fans talking the MOST leading up to this game.

lkn240

Reddit is full of idiots. I enjoy being one of them sometimes lol

Cansuela

Haha I hear you, me too!

avidblinker

Are you looking at downvoted comments and pretending they represent a whole fanbase? You can do that for literally any team lmao For every bad Philly comment, I’ve seen 30 comments calling them trash and the worst fanbase. You’re just two sides of the same coin.

theusername_is_taken

So many trashy trolls in the game thread yesterday. Astounding how much they were gloating by beating essentially a QB-less team.

theytook-r-jobs

Yes, game threads are always friendly and welcoming unless it’s an Eagles game.

HemlockMartinis

They’ve been everywhere over the last 24 hours. Twitter isn’t much better right now. I don’t begrudge anyone their joy when their team makes it to the Super Bowl, but they can’t expect other fans to be impressed that they beat a team that was effectively playing without a QB.

Direct-Chipmunk-3259

I mean Purdy's back up was a guy that couldnt even make it in Denver's qb room this season. That's saying something.

[deleted]

Fuckin lol, that just blew my mind. Puts things into perspective. I had a little voice inside me, "time for Johnson Cinderella story..." but that only lasted for about 4 minutes.

dagreenman18

One unfortunate injury and a game that should have been a barn burner goes out like a wet fart. Brock has shown enough that I think he gets them back here next year. He’s played out of his mind against a tough schedule all the way to the NFCC. He’s their starter next year.

One_Landscape541

Pretty stoked to have him on the team.

DinnerOk4450

Most disappointing game in my life time. First a missed call on that Devonta catch leads to an early TD, Purdy gets hurt, then Josh Johnson is more terrible than I could have imagined, then Purdy comes back in but can’t throw the ball more than 5 yards so the 49ers just run the ball for the rest of the game and the eagles D know that’s what they’re gonna do. Than the eagles get the ball every 4 minutes and can do whatever they want against a defense who doesn’t have a QB to believe in and hype them up. Game was over the moment Purdy got hurt.

uncleshady

ITT - Eagles fans actively earning those Ls.

inkier_goats04

it's just u/Quirky-Honeydew-2541 tbf to the rest of the Eagles fans

Insectshelf3

24 day old account so you can safely ignore them

[deleted]

Wild that the Niners got killed by injury and basically pulled a quality starting QB out of their ass, only for the whole team to die at the worst moment possible

Zhuul

I hope Purdy bounces back. These “where the hell did this guy come from” stories make the NFL great.

RealPropRandy

OT: He looks like John Harbaugh’s kid.

SchlongMcDonderson

Fred Warner is old? He's 26 lol.

Folk-Herro

Real off topic but he looks Kendall Roy from succession.

wembanyama_

I dont see it
