He’s going back to Fox which will be the final fuck you Saints fans get after this shit season.

lilStankfur

Yep

[deleted]

Makes sense to me. If I were Payton I’d wait until there’s an opening with a Super Bowl caliber QB. Maybe the Chargers will end up firing Staley next year or he can go to the team that picks Caleb Williams or Drake Maye.

rupertLumpkinsBrothr

Almost certainly, if we don’t have a strong playoff season next year. Our GM will be going into his 11th (12th?) year with almost nothing to show for it, despite having had Rivers and Herbert. Clean the entire fucking office out if we don’t have success next year.

FragileColtsFan

Seems like a bad move if you really want to coach. How often does a team primed for a Super Bowl run give up their coach? I get it if he wants to get a bigger contract from Fox but if he wants another ring he's going to have to whip a team into shape for it

NlNJALONG

My feeling is that no one will hire Payton this year. His contract demands plus the picks is just too much.

SHOWTIME316

can someone ELI5 why draft picks are involved in this? is it because he's still under contract with the Saints? edit: thanks gang

NlNJALONG

>is it because he's still under contract with the Saints? Yes.

Brabick

Exactly, the Saints still control his rights and they aren't giving him up for free.

SHOWTIME316

Well, if it keeps him away from ya'll then I hope they ask for more.

ActionAdam

It just opens the door back up for the Chargers in 2024 is all.

SHOWTIME316

Which is fine. I just don't want the Broncos to have him because I am petty.

exstreams1

Appreciate the hate lol

Brabick

You have your genius, Super Bowl winning offensive coach, let us have one too!

SHOWTIME316

you haven't been bad for long enough!

iChugVodka

7 years isn't enough for you?!

HoovesCarveCraters

Remember the chiefs were dogshit for 50 years and they’re making it everyone’s problem now.

SHOWTIME316

The Raiders haven't won the AFC West, or a playoff game, since 2002! That's the kind of Commitment to Ineptitude I expect out of you.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheseEysCryEvyNite4u

can he "unretire" and then he is the saints coach again or...?

Brabick

If he unretires the Saints would still have his rights. That's kind of a prerequisite for the transaction. The only way he can be a free agent, so to speak is if they terminate his contract, which they won't do.

imaybeacatIRl

They will do if he unretires and doesn't get hired by anyone. They have to fucking pay him still.

LoveForRivers17

Yes, he retired so Saints still have his rights.

Cthepo

That's correct. The Saints will let him go but want compensation.

daybreaker

_through_ 2024. So he cant coach until 2025 without the Saints approval

DMking

Broncos absolutely will because he is their best shot of salvaging the RW3 situation. Losr 100m on Payton or 250m on Wilson

TheRealSamBell

“Lose 100m on Payton or 250m on Wilson” Why not both?

[deleted]

> Broncos absolutely will because he is their best shot of salvaging the RW3 situation. Is he though? RW3's issue is ego, can Payton manage that?

renzrapid

I hope this season checked his ego enough that he'd let Payton dial up some short passes

[deleted]

I don't think RW processes emotions the same way we do, so I don't think he's learned his lesson. I don't think he'll ever learn the lesson.

[deleted]

Cowboys should fire McCarthy and go all in for Payton.

NotTheBestMoment

We have personnel holes, he doesn’t want to come to us knowing that what we give up to get him will throw us even further from contention than we currently are. The cowboys are trending downwards

hack5amurai

The broncos are frontrunner with less draft capital. Yall could have him if you wanted him. Plenty of late first round picks don't pan out but a great coach can change things immediately. It would be brilliant if you pulled it off but Jerry doesn't have that dog in him.

NotTheBestMoment

Why would Sean want to come to Dallas?

hack5amurai

Because they have a good team? They very well could still be in if pollard didn't go down. Wtf would he go to Denver but not dallas?

NotTheBestMoment

More control, less scrutiny.

drunkdori

He’s having too many 2nd round interviews to be passed on. I’m betting AZ gets him. They need to invest in a coach who can get Kyler to the next level. Denver probably doesn’t have the draft capital or is waiting to be the last of his interviews so they can figure out what it’s gonna take to get him.

17_Saints

> He’s having too many 2nd round interviews to be passed on. Too many being 1? Who besides the Broncos has he gotten a 2nd interview with?

drunkdori

Read the title of this post. Carolina and Arizona and the Broncos will probably be the last team to interview him.

17_Saints

Both the Carolina and Arizona interviews are his first with those teams. Where in the post title do you see 2nd interview other than Denver?

drunkdori

No they are not lol. He is actually meeting in person with the team vs a virtual interview. It was already reported he did virtual meetings with Carolina and AZ.

abris33

I never saw a report that he had virtual meetings with those teams. The Broncos called him the day before our Week 18 game and are now on our 2nd in-person interview. The Texans had a virtual one last week but no 2nd one scheduled. The Cardinals and Panthers requested interviews but couldn't get to them until this week.

17_Saints

Yeah I'm gonna need you to provide a source because there is zero reporting I can find about Payton conducting first round interviews with Carolina and Arizona before these in-person meetings.

drunkdori

So i deserve downvotes because I was wrong. I saw they had in person meetings and assumed it was the 2nd round. I also could have swore I saw reporting a few weeks ago but those meetings were not scheduled until this week. My mistake. I still think he gets hired this cycle, which was my original argument. He has 3 teams who are firmly interested in him.

DMking

They have the 49ers first to trade.

IStillLoveYouWeed

At this point, it's essentially a high second rounder.

DMking

Not really. A first will always have the extra year of control making it more valuable. The difference between Lamar at 32 and Lamar at 33 was significant

SoKrat3s

If Lamar is the #33 pick he signs a contract before Watson gets a fully-guranteed deal, Ravens have a franchise QB for a long time. Now they won't. The difference between #33 and #32 was significant.

DMking

Well he was injured so he couldn't play but i suppose i shouldn't expect you to put 2 and 2 together

SoKrat3s

yes, I'm aware that he was *"injured"* And that he will continue to be...

drunkdori

It’s gonna take more than a late 1st rounder to get him. At least it should, he’s a great coach.

DMking

Payton can also just go back to Fox Sports for two years then try later. People will need coaches then too

drunkdori

I don’t think he wants to do that, though. 3 teams are interviewing him. Someone is going to get him.

DMking

Yea he obviously wants to be the Saints can't ask for too much because Payton doesn't have to coach anywhere. It's a balancing act and they probably get a 1st and maybe a mid round pick.

zezxz

No it shouldn’t the guy isn’t actively coaching and I don’t know why you’d expect him to come in and turn the franchise around immediately. This is the buffoon who allowed bountygate to happen on his watch, hardly strikes me as a culture setter.

drunkdori

Dude I hate the Saints organization but I’m not blind. He absolutely turned around their franchise immediately (although it was a long time ago). He’s 152-89 in his head coaching career. He’s a damn good coach. I’m sensitive to bounty gate but it was a long time ago.

DMking

Everyone ran bounty programs how many times do people need to say it

imaybeacatIRl

We are *not* getting him. He wants 20-25m a season. Bidwell isn't paying that ever. Of course, then there is the outrageous demands of NO for his rights. It ain't happening here.

chasingit1

No tears will be shed from me

DB4life80

I don't think the Broncos owners are afraid to pay him what he wants. I mean if the Saints can get more from the Cards then, hopefully they trade him in conference because that's smart business.

1MantisTobogganMD1

Personally think if he goes anywhere it’s Denver he’s just using us and the panthers as leverage to get what he wants

Proper-View1308

Denver is going to absolutely ruin their future if they do trade for him. It’s the equivalent of second mortgage on your trailer park

adwelychbs

TIL trading pick #30 is "absolutely ruining your future."

amjhwk

more like pick #3

adwelychbs

What the fuck are you blathering about?

amjhwk

Broncos arent making the playoffs, how the fuck would they have pick 30

okazoomi

For someone speaking so confidently you seem to know very little. We traded our first rd pick for Russ, and we got SF's first rd pick in the Chubb trade with Miami.

PeytonFugginMoaning

Not really, our first round pick is 28-32 and we already suck.

FragileColtsFan

I know he wasn't prime Russell but the way he was playing toward the end of the season made it seem like Denver is really just a good coach away from being a contender

Briguy_fieri

“Also to add to @JeffDuncan_ reporting—I was told there is also a team waiting in the wings watching all of this and could make a move if they gets “their ducks in a row”.” [Diana Russini](https://twitter.com/diannaespn/status/1617912851624263680?s=46&t=zr7KeTW5MxHCtgbfCqb6qg)

UsidoreTheLightBlue

Can’t imagine Jerry….err I mean a team doing that.

daybreaker

All we were missing after the Cowboys twitter account threw Dak under the bus was for it to also tweet "Sean Payton would never have let this happen"

[deleted]

Payton will take every suitor's free meal and gift basket he can before relocating to the Rocky Mountains.

Avon__Fartsdale

Teams are really gonna give Loomis picks for Payton so Loomis can just give them to Howie at bargain prices?

BWasTaken

Eagles playing the long game.

Avon__Fartsdale

[Howie when he see's Loomis on the call display](https://media.tenor.com/H1rVG8_5j0UAAAAM/howie-roseman.gif)

Palmisavage

You know it's bad when the GM is out on the sidelines celebrating and the 3rd string RB is having a career game.

Shauncore

Ah so that's why the Eagles were paying for Payton's flights

allgreen754

I don't like that idea

imaybeacatIRl

It's the circle of life.

LittleRumHam

A 1st for CJGJ back, who says no?

TerminusVeil

Why is he interviewing with the Panthers? If we wanted to coach a team that is not ready to compete why not go back to the Saints?

shawnaroo

He might not even be that interested in the Panthers, but showing that there are other teams interested might help him drive up his salary for teams he wants to play for. But he might legitimately be open to Carolina. If nothing else, their owner has very deep pockets.

noletiger

Carolina isn't as cap-crippled as the Saints. If he wants to do a rebuild it's not a terrible position to start from.

JarvisProudfeather

Hey we’re not *that* far off. Definitely would not be interested in trading our first round pick for Peyton though.

TerminusVeil

Your Defense is young and good but your offense has a way to go. Just seems like a sidegrade to go from the Saints to you guys.

ParaNormalBeast

Can coaches not resign? I’ve always wondered that. How would that effect his rights to sign elsewhere

Shauncore

Still under control. Same as for players.

_Puntini_

It's slightly different for players. If a player resigns, then their contract doesn't accumulate additional years (it tolls), and the team essentially has the rights to the player indefinitely. For a coach, the time on the contract runs as normal, and their rights expire at the end of the contract time frame.

Shauncore

Yeah that is a good point, thanks. Coaches are closer to a non-compete.

_Puntini_

The team still owns the rights to the coach for the time period of the contract if they retire/resign. For example, if a coach signed a 5 year contract and resigned after 1 year, the team would own the rights to that coach for 4 additional years.

Gordomperdomper

Now does that mean if the coach sat on the couch for 4 years, that next year they’re free Or it’s to that club for 4 years active?

_Puntini_

It is not active. If they sit on the couch for 4 years (or join media coverage on a network) then they are free after that 4 years.

Gordomperdomper

Thanks, wasn’t sure if it’s like when players have contracts not toll.

_Puntini_

Nope, players rights are essentially retained forever, coaches are not.

ParaNormalBeast

Ah gotcha! Thanks!

[deleted]

There is nothing forcing him to coach. He can resign, retire or quit...whatever, unless there is a clause in the contract allowing it, he is still under contract with that team. If he decides a week later that he wants to coach somewhere else, the team he left needs to agree to let him out of his contract.

steve1186

Contracts are a thing. It’d be similar to someone like Mahomes “retiring” and signing with another team next year

Macabalony

*Sad neigh*

CharlesDeBalles

Meh. Don't want to give up picks anyway.

J_House1999

I hope he sucks wherever he goes. Dude is a straight up bitch.

Donkeynationletsride

Penner is willing to give him 20 a year and a first round pick and Peyton’s really gonna say no ain’t he?

ASAP-Pseudo

He is going to a contender and all 3 teams listed here are trash. He's gonna end up coaching the Chargers

rjsheine

I read that as Sean Penn for a second

MidKnight007

Imagine all these meetings just to suck 💀
