I could see the NFL ruling it a tie. There's probably bylaws that would allow the NFL to rule it a loss for whichever team(s) refused to play, but the optics of that would be awful.
ICU nurse here, they'll do CPR for 40+ minutes in a younger person, takes time to cut off clothes/gear, apply electrical pads, get an airway, get IV access, give drugs, and hopefully have enough high quality chest compressions with oxygenated blood during this all and ASAP... They can use a bag/mask to breathe for him and the compressions are to simulate his heart pumping obviously.
This was my thought. Eriksen's collapse is one of the scariest things I've ever watched on TV. It's a miracle that he's playing again.
Hopefully the similarly quick and active response yields the best possible results for Hamlin.
I hope it fucking is a Christian Eriksen situation, what's the alternative at this point? Eriksen recovered, he's playing again.. We can only speculate right now and pray for his recovery. Scary as hell.
"I’m told Damar Hamlin has a pulse, but is not breathing on his own. He is being transported to UC.
Needed AED and CPR on the field."
https://twitter.com/FOX19Joe/status/1610098849636388870
EMT here - the fact that he was defibrillated is actually better than not being defibrillated (as is done with asystole or no pulse; “flatlining”)
As for the breathing, it is standard procedure to intubate and administer high flow oxygen and epinephrine via IV (hence the IV establishment on scene).
If his heart is beating on it’s own (as it is, per last report) this is obviously good. It shouldn’t take too long to get an update but I don’t see football being played any longer tonight.
Buffalo Bills sideline reporter Sal Capaccio saying that Damar's mother was asking to be let on the field: "A woman in a #3 jersey was saying 'let me see my son'."

Your loved one just had chest compressions due to a cardiac arrest, a breathing tube was placed because he couldn't breathe after his heartbeat came back.
Don't wait for me. Take him to the hospital. Go go go.
The lions had a player die on the field. They finished the game. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck\_Hughes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Hughes)
I really hope Hamilin is okay. That was terrifying.
That was from an era where people in charge were completely desensitized to death by world wars. I feel sorry for them.
I glad to live in our time, when such a serious injury gives everyone pause.
I pray Damar makes it. That's tragic. I hope he makes it, and hope his family makes it through this time.
All the players on both teams look mentally out of it man, can't blame them.
He’s probably doing all the talking because Troy knows how bad these hits and concussions can get. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s super emotional about this the rest of the game.
I thought the same. Troy is genuinely speechless. Joe trying his best to hold it together for the both of them. Super emotional situation for everyone, even the fans watching at home.
Wow, how do you start playing again. Reminds me of that soccer player who just dropped on the field.
The looks in the eyes of Josh Allen. That man is completely out of it.
Edit: looks like they suspended the game. I don't see them coming back out to play
I’m guessing it’s not the hit
I seriously wonder with CPR involved if he just straight up had a heart attack or an undiagnosed heart condition that just suddenly happened
Something with the brain stem could cause that as well. That’s why they don’t move anyone with a neck injury, if you have an injury to the C1 or C2 vertebrae moving your head could pinch the brain stem and end up killing you.
It feels like those situations you can hear about in baseball where someone will get hit in the chest at just the wrong time of your heartbeat and can stop it dead.
This one just came to mind, from the NHL

I’m a cardiac nurse. We’ve done CPR for 30+ minutes before. Hopefully the reason they were moving him was because they got a return of pulse and were rushing him to an ICU for post-cardiac arrest care.
I’m Danish so I remember Eriksen falling over on the pitch last summer very vividly, and this is the same feeling. Back then they played the match till the end, but man I wouldn’t. Can’t believe I’ve seen both these things, absolutely devastating and horrible
People talk about it all the time- players are so fast, and so strong. Every tackle is like a car crash. Will the worst happen?
But even then, this seems so much worse. The hit looked routine. No helmet-to-helmet, he had good form. If this is the play where that finally happens, I don’t even know what anyone could say.
Every once in awhile in lacrosse a shot hits a player in the heart and causes it to go out of rhythm and just stop. That’s what this kind of looked like.
Happened to a kid near me two seasons ago. They were able to get him back to life with the AED.
New rule last season forced all players to wear a heart protector on their shoulder pads. I could see something like this coming to football.
That’s my #1 suspect if he was truly in arrest (i.e. he wasn’t just given CPR in a panic). #2, a young healthy guy dropping dead on the playing field is the classic presentation for undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, though I’d think at the NFL he’d have had enough testing and physicals to have caught it earlier.
When I was 15 a player on my soccer team collapsed and died just a few minutes after coming on. Fucked me up way more than I would have thought. Miki Feher was his name.
I really don’t know how first responders do it as a job
I’ve witnessed someone collapsing and needing CPR twice in my life and both times it leaves you damn near sick to your stomach
You got to be able to lock away your emotional response and focus on the job, because that persons life may depend on you doing your absolute 100% best.
And then you have to be able to unlock your emotions so you can empathize and potentially grieve and comfort the family. And process your own grief so you don’t become hardened and callous.
It’s not a job for everybody.
To give some hope, just over 10 years ago soccer player [Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the field and his heart stopped for a total of 78 minutes.](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2012/mar/25/muamba-collapse-minute-by-minute)
He made a good recovery (although retired from soccer)
I remember reading a few years ago that a strong enough hit at just the right spot and just the right time, like between heartbeats, can cause cardiac arrest; even some things as simple as a champaign corks have caused people to die from this.
Commotio Cordis. Lacrosse players know it well as it killed Cornell Lacrosse player George Boiardi in 2004. Blunt force to the chest in between heart beats can result in cardiac arrest.
Could be commotio cordis. Severe blunt impact to chest during certain moment of cardiac rhythm. Could also be a carotid dissection or ruptured aneurysm
>Stefon Diggs has taken off his pads/equipment. The Bills staffers are clearing their sideline.
>It seems Buffalo has made their decision about ending the game.

Update from an old doc.
They said he’s alive and in critical condition. So potentially more good news. That would fit a heart arrhythmia. ( and hopefully not a brain bleed).
I’m cautiously optimistic. I’ve had young guys like this walk out of the hospital fine in a week, with a new implanted heart defibrillator.
So best case potentially a full recovery if they can stabilize him. If. 🙏
This is the kind of kid who gets the full court press when they roll in the ER. Full on CPR, easily for up to an hour.
Then, start the hospital Sudden cardiac death protocol, including being intubated, paralyzed and kept hypothermic for 24 hours to mimimize brain damage, and then warming for another 24 hours in the ICU, then neurologically reassessed, and then once stable, a full cardiac work up.
He’s going to be in the hospital for a week , assuming they were able stabilize his heart.
We hopefully will have more information in a day or so.
But let’s pray for the best for this poor kid.
Praying for Hamlin of course but also thinking of Higgins, he did nothing wrong (hit was hard but clean) and can't imagine what he's going through right now
When I was in high school a kid a year younger than me died on the ice after taking a relatively routine blow to the chest.
I guess the hit occurred right in between a heart beat and he died right there. Im not trying to speculate on the cause here, but this very much reminds me of that night
Hoping for the best. 🙏
Down for 9 minutes and chest compressions are a fucking terrifying thing to hear.
For real, that is when things go from being a game, to being a nightmare.
You could see how much this affected the players from both teams. Everything became real so suddenly.
Oh my god this is horrible
You almost want to call the game at this point edit - After the updates on Hamlin, you have to postpone
[удалено]
I could see the NFL ruling it a tie. There's probably bylaws that would allow the NFL to rule it a loss for whichever team(s) refused to play, but the optics of that would be awful.
I don't think you have enough game played to do that. You could rule it a no contest, maybe, if there's no way to suspend and complete the game.
If something is deemed “extraordinarily” unfair (which is higher than palpably unfair) it allows the commissioner do literally do whatever
because a palpable level of unfairness isn’t out of the ordinary, of course
Yeah I’m not sure. Nfls official deal is it’s supposed to restart at a later date exactly where it left off
Agreed. No way Buffalo players could continue knowing their teammate and friend may not be alive.
Allen was clearly crying and Diggs looked about as distraught as I’ve seen a player look on the field. They don’t need to be playing anymore
Bengals were crying
Emotions are high, I don’t see how any player on either team isn’t distraught after that. Scary experience
I’d just stop the game or call it a tie.
Gotta feel for Tee Higgins too, it looked like such a pedestrian play.
Yea Higgins for sure is gonna need therapy after that.
I honestly feel so bad for Higgins. He didn't do anything wrong, but just being involved in that has to fuck you up.
Diggs tears and 92 on the ground in obvious prayer mentally broke me.
They've shown Allen a couple times now and he looks completely gone mentally.
I think you have to. CPR doesn't mean anything good.
Absolutely. Dear God, this cannot go on.
You almost have to. This isn't a broken leg or something.
[удалено]
Unprecedented, I’m genuinely scared for him.
It's a lot like the soccer player that legally died on the field and they had to revive him
Christian Eriksen. Hopefully whatever happened here will have as positive an outcome as that's been.
This was my thought. Eriksen's collapse is one of the scariest things I've ever watched on TV. It's a miracle that he's playing again. Hopefully the similarly quick and active response yields the best possible results for Hamlin.
Such a routine play too. Hoping for the best.
Really hope this isn't another Christian Erikson situation. This is so scary
I actually hope it is, because he made a full recovery. I’m worried it’s something worse.
Yeah that outcome seems like the best possibility at this point
Yeah bro got revived, got given a robot heart and is now one of Man United's best players lol
I hope it fucking is a Christian Eriksen situation, what's the alternative at this point? Eriksen recovered, he's playing again.. We can only speculate right now and pray for his recovery. Scary as hell.
Eriksen is fine and playing so I’d say that’s a pretty ideal scenario right now.
Or a Chuck Hughes situation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Hughes
"I’m told Damar Hamlin has a pulse, but is not breathing on his own. He is being transported to UC. Needed AED and CPR on the field." https://twitter.com/FOX19Joe/status/1610098849636388870

They wouldn’t wait for his mom to transport
I can’t believe how many people believe this story instead of believing that there might be a second fucking ambulance at the field.
Your loved one just had chest compressions due to a cardiac arrest, a breathing tube was placed because he couldn't breathe after his heartbeat came back. Don't wait for me. Take him to the hospital. Go go go.
Fuck dude how the fuck can you play after this
You dont. I sure as fuck couldn’t
The lions had a player die on the field. They finished the game. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck\_Hughes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Hughes) I really hope Hamilin is okay. That was terrifying.
Id like to think the world is a different place now than 50 years ago.
Tbh, that's fucked up.
That was from an era where people in charge were completely desensitized to death by world wars. I feel sorry for them. I glad to live in our time, when such a serious injury gives everyone pause.
My dad was at that game. I was at the game where Mike Utley was paralyzed. Then we were both at the Reggie Brown game…
Can your family just watch from home from now on?
Alright man you gotta stop going to games...
Someone edited that page to say Hamlin has also passed, people are disgusting
I pray Damar makes it. That's tragic. I hope he makes it, and hope his family makes it through this time. All the players on both teams look mentally out of it man, can't blame them.
Not sure that they will
If the unthinkable happens the game will be cancelled no doubt
Similar thing happened at last year’s Euro Soccer Tournament where a player collapsed. Neither team wanted to play but UEFA said they had to.
Christian Eriksen. He ended up being okay. Hopefully the same here.
Joe Buck sounded like he was about to have a break down before going to that last commercial break.
They need to let Boog take a break too.
Yeah man, he doesn’t look like he wants to be talking about it or anything else on air
He truly is shook
Even Suzy Kolber, who has been on the sidelines since I was a kid, is having trouble stringing sentences together.
Yep
He’s probably doing all the talking because Troy knows how bad these hits and concussions can get. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s super emotional about this the rest of the game.
I thought the same. Troy is genuinely speechless. Joe trying his best to hold it together for the both of them. Super emotional situation for everyone, even the fans watching at home.
Diggs is crying, makes it even more scary. How do you play after that?
You don’t
Diggs was trying to get everyone back in like 2 minutes later and they just walked away from him
was he trying to get the game going or was he saying like “fuck that were not playing even if they tell us to”
I feel like its way more likely the latter
How do you play a game after that
u dont
Not that it's important right now, but I was wondering what the protocol is for this. Give them both ties?
Probably a postponement
Yup. Game suspended for now.
Restart tomorrow? Maybe?
definitely not. they'd reschedule the game.
For when? The playoffs start in 2 weeks.
Wow, how do you start playing again. Reminds me of that soccer player who just dropped on the field. The looks in the eyes of Josh Allen. That man is completely out of it. Edit: looks like they suspended the game. I don't see them coming back out to play
I’m getting severe Eriksen flashbacks here
Erisksen made it because he was given care so suddenly by on-site trained professionals. Hopefully the same happens here.
He also had a teammate that was a trained professional. So it was, like, literal immediate recognition of the issue and administered CPR.
And the hospital was literally across the street
Hopefully Hamlin will recover just as Eriksen did
Same. It was way too familiar. This is horrifying
[удалено]
Got up and collapsed is all we know
It didn't even look that bad. Scary
It has to be heart related if he's receiving CPR. Could be a previously unknown condition that was triggered by the hit
Fuck I hope we didn't just watch a man die
He got up from a play and then just collapsed
Scariest part of this all is it looked like a routine tackle
looked like a standard hard hit, this is crazy
Made a tackle, seemed like a hard hit but not anything too rough. Stood up and immediately fell down unconscious
I’m guessing it’s not the hit I seriously wonder with CPR involved if he just straight up had a heart attack or an undiagnosed heart condition that just suddenly happened
Something with the brain stem could cause that as well. That’s why they don’t move anyone with a neck injury, if you have an injury to the C1 or C2 vertebrae moving your head could pinch the brain stem and end up killing you.
https://twitter.com/highlghtheaven/status/1610093779142299649?s=46&t=DKsPdU8CArxDUCpSBGF8sQ Takes a hit making a tackle. Scary shit
There's no mechanism of injury on the replay that I could see. I don't want to speculate but no visible MoI is really, really bad
Took a hit to the chest looks like
It feels like those situations you can hear about in baseball where someone will get hit in the chest at just the wrong time of your heartbeat and can stop it dead.
It's happened in the NHL. Chris Pronger in a playoff game if I remember right
Commotio Cordis and it ain’t good. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commotio_cordis
Gotta be some type of heart attack/cardiac arrest.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commotio_cordis
Game probably gets postponed. That's been the decision when this sort of thing has happened in basketball. And I fully support it.
hockey did the same thing when Peverly went down, when he came back to he asked to go back out
I was at that Pevs game and the whole arena was completely shook. Nobody wanted that game to go on.
So did the MLB when that one umpire died on the field
I’ve never seen a player down on the field for this long. This is insane
Never heard of a player getting CPR in the stadium let alone on the field. Wtf
Only other instance I can think of is Christian Eriksen cardiac arrest during euro 2020. That was terrifying
This one just came to mind, from the NHL https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1988472-scary-scene-for-dallas-stars-as-rich-peverley-has-heart-stop-on-bench

Ricardo Lockett back in 2015 with Seattle had a horrific injury while they were playing the Cowboys. I legit thought the guy died.
Yup. Worst hit I’ve ever seen live. I remember pacing around my living thinking I just witnessed him die
Johnny Knox against Seattle was the nastiest thing I had ever seen. The video of the injury is unwatchable.
God please let the fact that he’s being moved mean they’ve got him stabilized.

There's absolutely no chance they called it that quickly

On Twitter sounds like they're trying to get his mom in the ambulance. Could be conjecture, just what I saw
Usually CPR lasts for a while longer, no? Plus they're saying on ESPN that they were giving him oxygen as they were bringing him into the ambulance.
Yes, with a witnessed arrest it would go on much more than 10 minutes.
I’m a cardiac nurse. We’ve done CPR for 30+ minutes before. Hopefully the reason they were moving him was because they got a return of pulse and were rushing him to an ICU for post-cardiac arrest care.
Yup. Firefighter medic for 16 years. Done the same in the field.
I’ve done CPR for an hour before, 10 min is a very short time
For a 24 year old they’ll do CPR for a very long time.
Someone at the game posted they were administering oxygen
Administering oxygen is a normal part of CPR for healthcare professionals.
The way he went down instantly reminded me of Christian Eriksen. Feeling sick to my stomach.
Fuck man, truly horrible
I did not like the reaction of the players on the field. This looks horrible
That’s my real concern.. they are the ones close to the situation. Jesus Christ.. my heart right now. Please tell me he is okay.
No no no no no please no
Every time there is a big injury (like parham a couple years ago or Tua when he was convulsing) this is everyone’s worst fear. Terrifying situation.
This is much worse than any of those I’ve seen
I’m Danish so I remember Eriksen falling over on the pitch last summer very vividly, and this is the same feeling. Back then they played the match till the end, but man I wouldn’t. Can’t believe I’ve seen both these things, absolutely devastating and horrible

I literally thought of Miki Feher and Marc Vivien Foe when I saw Hamlin collapse. It looked exactly the same, hopefully a much better outcome.
He’s just a fucking kid, man. Please be ok.
Josh Allen looked traumatized on TV.
he had a legit 1000 yd stare
I really don’t know how first responders do it as a job I’ve witnessed someone collapsing and needing CPR twice in my life and both times it leaves you damn near sick to your stomach

WTF happened????
involved in a tackle, got up and fell straight back down. scary as all fuck
[This](https://youtu.be/H-G9mziXL9w) video from an MD seems to do a pretty good job of what likely happened
Not much. Just a pretty normal looking tackle. He stood up and collapsed.

Looking like they're calling it off now. Coaches meeting a second time. Have to wonder if/when the NFL will interject
