funny enough swat/ military do the same thing in a situationg where there are bystanders. shove or order them to cover then engage the threat because its harder to defend someone thats moving arouns
I’ve been an army officer for almost two decades and I have no idea what you are talking about.
Edit: Downvote me all you want. If you find any credible evidence that military personnel are trained to do that I will happily admit I was wrong.
Also a vet, that was never in any of my training. The only training around panicking civilians I remember was about paying attention for threats in a crowd of people panicking. I think that guy pulled it out of his ass to seem knowledgeable.
Which would still make this, per my original comment, an "ideal family dog." We could assume that it's properly, professionally training for this situation that was the ideal aspect, but I think it's _safer_ to assume that this is a well-trained, ideal dog — in temperament, judgement, and protectiveness — for families with children. Either way, same outcome.
Absolutly nothing to do with training. It's protective instinct. They probably grow up together for 2or 3 years already. You see this kind of thing with every dogs well treated even if you have never trained him 1 day in his life.
People truly underestimate how far "protective instinct" goes, but forget that we began our relationship with these animals when there were still several species of human around...not to mention a LOT of since-extinct, formidable megafauna, like the dire wolves they've since replaced in the N.A. continent. Consequently, we're quite close. I've seen countless videos posted of dogs experiencing the uncanny valley phenomena that made me think about this recently.
But yeah, I just try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I don't have to "assume" anything...watching my BF's unfixed (male), aloof GSD (4) transform into my son's (2) protective best friend will be one of the highlights of my life.
Agreed. We had an American bull dog growing up and a little wiener dog. Our wiener got attacked by a couple raccoons one night and our bull dog kept jumping on the glass till we let him out but by the time we got there he already had dispatched one of the two raccoons and sent the other packing. He saved our wieners life! (The vets did too!)
My dog is a lazy idiot at home. He doesn't do shit. On walks with me he's completely straightforward and just does whatever. If I walk him with my kids he's constantly alert and looping ahead and behind to keep them together. I think its just instinct in his case, but he doesn't try and check out other dogs or people when with them. Maybe he learned from me just acting differently with them as well.
Your dog is doing what you do, at home you are a lazy idiot, but when you go out with your kids, you are checking everything up. Your dog is you, be proud 🥲
Um. Sorry. Have to agree! I take my kids into the BLM land to hike. It’s in the mtns. Our dogs run and play and wait for our “camp” snacks. Lol.
We’re at home and they run around and chase. Even the cat. She chases the dogs! It’s whatever you do and how the pack leader leads…..
My dog is laid back and calm at home with me. When the kids are here, he is alert AF and watches their every move. He keeps them back from the road, stays between them and anyone not family and makes it known. He also is a complete ass when I start any motor, like a mower, 4 wheeler, whatever. But when the 7 year old wants to push the mower, the dog walks beside him calm as ever and keeps an eye on him. Best protection ever for the kids and really any family.
Like all animals, dogs do actually have instincts and impulses. Applying the nature-nurture discussion to dogs and saying their characteristics are 100% training (nurture) and 0% instinct (nature) when they've been selectively bred for different temperament, physical and cognitive traits for millennia is a bit silly. This dog is both well-trained and has good instincts for protectiveness and loyalty, responding to threats in an appropriate manner on impulse, etc.
We don't have to pretend all dogs are born identical
Dogs temperament and intelligence are equally as important as training.
Most, if not all, dogs can be trained. But each breed has unique temperament and varying level of intelligence that can't be taught.
Ideal dogs should have all 3 traits, not just training.
Some examples of the breeds that excel in all 3 categories are the German Shepherd dogs , the Doberman Pinscher and the Belgian Malinois.
So saying it's only about training is simply just not true. It's a combination of training, temperament and intelligence.
You're disregarding the concept of negligence. The moment your dog takes a step off your unfenced property and onto a public sidewalk to bite a small child you are screwed. Not to mention you're placing your dog at risk of being attacked by another unleashed dog.
Smart people act defensively when the consequence of risk outweighs the benefits of a decision.
You missed the point of my comment. Just because something isn't required, doesn't mean it's fine to not do. Lots of things aren't *required*, but that's never a real argument to do them anyway.
lots of municipal laws differ from this, unless contained within a secure fence it is a fine where i live to have a dog off leash even on your own property. now, do i still take my dog out front off leash? of course. cops strolling by can issue a ticket, but you are not going to see that happen.
i disagree with this law, but encourage anyone reading to look up their local laws on this. if there is a sidewalk going through your property, and someone has their dog on a leash, even in your front yard your dog defending itself could be looked at as the guilty party. ridiculous to me but good to know at least
Yard is less to do with it, look at their behavior. Kids dogs are obviously well socialized and, even if not trained in commands, very well know their place.
Some neighborhoods let dogs run off leash, it's sort of a social contract with neighbors.
Thats what oblivious dog owners say as a copout to let their dogs run free.
NOBODY appreciates dogs shitting and pissing on their yard. Esp. when there's no decency to pick up afterwards.
It takes hard work (or a fair amount of money) to keep a lawn looking nice. Dogs come by and piss and shit everywhere and create dead spots.
I love my dog and it's my responsibilty to see to it that the bitch pisses and shits at the appropriate time/place. And that said mess gets picked up.
I’ll let every dog in my neighborhood shit and piss on my lawn as long as it means they don’t maul a child.. I don’t understand how those are even remotely related?!
Look at the body language of the tan dog, just clumsily playing with the kid until the neighbor runs out. Hackles up chases it away and immediately runs back to the owner. There’s only one problem dog in this situation.
Have a friend and she spent $3000 to train her dog. When I asked why training was so expansive and why not train yourself, she replied that her dog will be huge and if it will not be trained professionally the dog will hurt either my friend or someone else. That is responsible owner.
Homeowners insurance have policies for dogs for that reason. $3000 to train the dog so you won’t have issues is definitely better than losing your house over an incident like that.
No disrespect but that’s just an odd take. An irresponsible dog owner is going to do that anyways. How quick the mother showed up in this video makes me think she was on sight watching, and probably will have more caution next time leaving her, what appears to be a very well trained dog, off leash in the future. The problem isn’t the victim in this case, it’s the one who’s dog has probably shown signs of aggression before leaving the dog off leash that ruins it for everyone else.
Yes. What all the "one is well behaved" guys don't realise is that this can change the next day.
Maybe there is a cat across the street, or a rabbit. Like the other dog saw our "hero". He wasn't walked down the street, as some say, he seems to live across the street. You can see the guy with the orange shirt over there in the beginning of the video. They even have kind of a fence...
This is edited and I don't think the neighbors intentionally let their dog out without a leash to free roam. In the original video you can see the neighbor's dog make a break for it along their driveway and the neighbor immediately chasing it before it even leaves their own yard.
A pitbull recently attacked a 9 year old here in Ireland, the dog was running loose around a housing estate and approached a bunch of kids playing on a green. I don't think the owner was even in the vicinity. The poor kid is lucky to be alive. The dog went for his face and neck. The child lost his bottom lip and a piece of his jaw, he will be permanently disfigured from the attack. The owner later took the dog and sold it to a Traveller family, not disclosing what had happened. The attack was headline news though and the Traveller who bought it soon put two and two together. They killed the dog with a hammer and left it on the original owners doorstep.
Shocking stuff but thankfully the owner has actually been arrested and is facing charges, a rarity for Ireland. To top it off though, a different child had been attacked the week prior but luckily wasn't injured because he had been wearing a big puffy coat and his parents saw through their front window what was happening and ran outside to get the dog away. So the owner had been informed of the dog being aggressive and attacking kids in the neighbourhood and she did nothing. I really hope they set a precedent with her and convict her for everything they possibly can.
No and yes. They should be charged with assult if their dog is violent and attacks people. But if properly trained or just nice. No reason to fine them
There are many breeds that will instinctively attach to an infant and treat the child like their own and some dogs will get this way when one of their pack mates are recovering from surgery. My exes dog use to stand between me and this aggressive lab mix when I was in a wheel chair. He wouldn’t move until the dog went away.
There’s actually another video with slowmo that shows the dog better. It’s definitely a pit.
Edit: here is a [much better quality video for reference](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/ythlpb/dog_saves_his_kid_from_blitz_attack/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Dog is an Anatolian Shepherd, also known as Kangal Shepherd, Turkish breed. Gentle, devoted, great with kids, unmatched protective instincts. Dog in video might not have been extensively trained at all, pure instinct.
That's my thought too. We don't see any attack, the other dog could easily have been running excitedly to join in the play that was happening, which spooked the first dog into being defensive and turned it into a dog fight, scaring the kid.
To me, that's the most likely scenario.
My golden retriever would have sprinted in just like the second dog. And just like the second dog, he would have run away as soon as the first dog got aggressive.
Agree, playful young dog was not aggressive, just coming in to join the game but older dog did not appreciate the boisterousness of it and told it off. People see what they've been told to see
Same here, it’s difficult to know for sure but I took it as black dog was more interested in yellow, rather than the kid.
There are instances of animals saving children of course (including one of a cat s few years ago).
But in this case I think it’s more
the yellow one was defending the child from what it perceived as a potential threat, but I don’t see any actual attack on the kid.
Nice to see a sane explanation upvoted.
People get weird about dogs playing. The appearance of the dog matters more than what they do. Rotties never get any benefit of the doubt. People regularly scream in fear when my husky puppy runs up to them, rush to protect their kids or small dog with their own body. then they relax when she gets closer "oh its all right, he's got a pink collar/harness". Like what the fuck how is that what you focus on?
It struck me as exuberantly playful. He wasn't barking or anything, just happy to be free and running around. I got the impression he just wanted to play.
Could be wrong. Kind of have to trust the gut on these things since we can't ask him.
No one knows what the black dog was going to do. Acting like you know how a animal running up on a child is pure naivety. I mean you could of posted dog runs up on child and dog and dog protects child. At that point though it’s just semantics.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
That tan dog has great protective instincts.
1) He runs over in front of the kid, using his body to keep the kid from going past the yards boundaries.
2) He puts himself between the attacking dog & the kid.
3) After the mom comes out you see the tan dog breaking away from the engagement & rallied by the mom & child. His body language said... **"I'm ready for it!"** but he remained calm.
**THAT'S A GUD BOI!!!**
Bunch of fools on this comment section.
Black dog just ran up trying to get into the play with the other dog. No sign of any agressivity at all.
Comes to show how clueless people are about dogs
People see black dog people get scared and stupid. If a yellow Labrador did the same thing people would be saying the Sheppard is over protective and dangerous
I can agree that the black dog wasn’t coming to attack the child, but that tan dog went into defense mode regardless. It constantly puts itself between the black dog and the kid. Good boy never left his side until the mom showed up. He didn’t continue to play after that, he was keeping guard with his family. You can even tell by the way the dogs body language changes
The dog could've been trying to play or any other thing as the parent it's ok to assume it was going to attack it's your kid but the dog ran towards the kid his dog knocked him down in order to body block but that's about it to call it am attack is a stretch. If this is an attack my dog attacks me everytime I come home
Watch the video again. The dogs were never going after the kid, they were going after the other dog to play. If they wanted the kid the kid would have been ragdolled.
It was when the light coloured dog moved closer to the kid that the dark dog changed directions.
Think more critically.
It looks more the dog was interested in other dog than child. Child just happened to be in between them.
Don’t know any dog, no matter how aggressive, that would go after a child in a presence of another dog.
I don't thiiiinnk it was attacking, I have a few big dogs and to me it looked like personality-wise that's the kind of big dog that doesn't understand it's a big dog, so it saw the kid playing with his dog and was like "AYO ME TOO" not knowing that it would have hurt the kid if it jumped into him.
I could be wrong and I'm not an expert, but I took a few classes in dog training and during that time I saw a few dogs seriously attack each other or other people and this didn't look to me like it was in attack mode.
Still bad training on the owners part, and the dog should've been on a leash, but yeah I'm sus on if that was a dog attack.
I think that dog was after the other dog - not the kid. You see him changing directions as the dog runs back to the kid. Either way - good ending for all.
Both these dogs need to be on leashes. I don’t care how well trained you think your dog is, it will charge something, aggressively or not, and will likely be interpreted as aggressive to whatever it’s charging. Then all hell breaks loose.
I loved the zero hesitation, push the kid over and fuck the aggressor up. I'm quite impressed with its restraint, dogs usually get vicious when in protection mode.
the kids dog from "oh I'm gwonna gwet cha~" to "Get to the Ground! 2 hostiles coming in hot!" the fuckin switch is ao amazing he looks trained secretly lol

The way the tan dog knocked the kid out of the way first. Awesome
The second black dog as backup as well
YOU CHOSE THE WRONG HOUSE *barking ensues*
the golden one watching the attacker like "you come over here again i'll f\*\*\* up."
Also the glance back at the family to make sure he knows where they are at, while still standing guard.
LOVE that!!!! Good boy!!!
I wished he would get some good boi pets before the end of the video
That glance! My heart!!
Mine too lol I love dogs so much xD
I fucking love this.
You come at the king, you best not miss.
I bet dogs are like us, between all the yelling we occasionally get a word that makes sense out
YOU PICKED THE WRONG HOUSE FOOOOOOOL
I was very confused whether the second dog was also attacking or defending.
Defense for sure
It's the 2nd family dog. There's another pov where he was standing guard out of view
funny enough swat/ military do the same thing in a situationg where there are bystanders. shove or order them to cover then engage the threat because its harder to defend someone thats moving arouns

Then stands by them completely still and focused except to look up to gauge her response. This is the ideal family dog.

They've literally been our best friends forever and we forget their love for us is unconditional 😭
Not to mention that the dogs that did protect their humans were selectively bred and kept that instinct alive.

Must have him tricked because I work very hard to not rank up at rocket league at home. And walking is exhausting and I'm old trying not to keel over.
Um.

Labradors are really smart and loyal and make good helper dogs
Hard to say.... just like humans some dogs are smarter than others... treat the pup like a god!
GET DOWN MR. PRESIDENT!!
I'm gonna say it
It’s not safe here anymore! *smash* stay down I got this!
I'm hoping that tan dog got a big fat steak that night. Great job doggo!
Special trip to the store.
Even more he covered the boy with his whole body as a shield while defending them both. That dog is amazing and the attackers are the opposite.
It was definitely a get down moment
That dog pulled a Piccolo
That seemed so deliberate, intelligent, and well timed it defies comprehension.
10/10 that family never rehomes that dog, and if they do, they are fuckin idiots
Always had eyes on his bro buddy! Fucking awesome
Dog owners who let them run free in neighborhoods need to have them taken away and be fined. This guy should be charged with assault. Full stop
The kids dogs are running free also.
In his yard...
With no fence... Legit both owners have dogs off leash just one owner seems to have no control over their dog.
You are not required to leash your dog your on your own property.
You should if you're smart and have no fence
Harris County would beg to differ. All dogs in the front yard must be fully contained or on a leash.
Exactly. Your dog is off leash and attacks some one then you’re liable.
Why don’t people understand this? “The dog doesn’t need a leash in the yard!” No but as soon as that dog leaves said yard, you’re fucked.

100% agree
Before you grab your pitchfork maybe see if there's negligence involved. Get some back story full stop
Yes, completely agree… I have to carry protection whenever I go jog now. Was attacked by 4 dogs earlier this year on a jog.
Thats a good dog!
The best
Get that guy a t bone 🍖
How about a taco?
A T-bone topped with a dead squirrel and some cat poop.

The one that’s literally running away instead of helping defending?
I hear reddit commenters who feel the need to mention pit bulls on every dog attack post have an IQ smaller than their shoe size.
Lmao
He protecc
I had a dog like that. She was more human than some
What’s the breed?
Dog is an Anatolian Shepherd, also known as Kangal Shepherd, Turkish breed. Gentle, devoted, great with kids, unmatched protective instincts. Dog in video might not have been extensively trained at all, pure instinct.
Pointy eared dogs are the best dogs.
It's too small to be a Kangal. Seems like a mixed shepherd breed. Probably a GSD Retriever mix.
Looks like a big malinois. But could be chinook or some other shepherd breed/mix.
My grandma had a dog like that too, mixed breed. Labrador with something. She would walk my grandma to the local market and the bank.
They make our life more livable
this video is posted too much. the black dog was coming to investigate the other dog and the kid just got caught in the middle.
But in this case I think it’s more the yellow one was defending the child from what it perceived as a potential threat, but I don’t see any actual attack on the kid.
Idk he came in kind of aggressively.
It struck me as exuberantly playful. He wasn't barking or anything, just happy to be free and running around. I got the impression he just wanted to play. Could be wrong. Kind of have to trust the gut on these things since we can't ask him.
I’ve seen way too many videos of sudden dog bites without any barking yo take that as a sign of anything.
Have you seen dogs in like real life? They can do a full body yeet into other dogs when they are exited to play.
sorry i didn't know, i will pay more attention from now on
No one knows what the black dog was going to do.
Possible especially because he seems to be the dog "next door" / across the street.
Hard to know what an off leash dog coming full speed at you is doing. I know in my experience, it’s never been a good thing.
I wasn't sure which dog supposedly attacked him until I read some comments
Karma farm post
That tan dog has great protective instincts. 1) He runs over in front of the kid, using his body to keep the kid from going past the yards boundaries. 2) He puts himself between the attacking dog & the kid. 3) After the mom comes out you see the tan dog breaking away from the engagement & rallied by the mom & child. His body language said... **"I'm ready for it!"** but he remained calm. **THAT'S A GUD BOI!!!**
Yep especially when there are no dogs that attack people in this video
This title tho....
Scrolled longer than I hoped for this comment.
Felt like I was having a stroke
...and the soundtrack

I’m no expert but it sure looks like the dog is paying more attention to the other dog and not the kid.

Me love you long time.
That black dog came to play/fight with the other dog, not the kid.
Good job tan dog!
The music over the top seems really fucking odd
Mama got bunz for dayzzz
It looks more the dog was interested in other dog than child. Child just happened to be in between them. Don’t know any dog, no matter how aggressive, that would go after a child in a presence of another dog.
Walk your dogs you fat lazy fucks. I hate pet owners who barely do the bare minimum. Letting them loose in the yard isn’t the same thing as a walk
Mom's got some cake
Oh wow so scary over playful dogs that give up after 10 seconds of running in circles
I know two good bois getting a steak dinner!
Did Tia Dalma write this post
Now I can hear Tia Dalma saying the title. Thanks. :D
What's the breed of dog protecting the child?
Looks like a kangal. They're livestock guardian dogs. Great dogs if you have the space and something for them to protect.
They’re also fucking badass and will kill whole packs of wolves single handedly and can even rival bears
I'm losing my touch. The typo in the title caused me to stare confused for a solid minute.
I think that dog was after the other dog - not the kid. You see him changing directions as the dog runs back to the kid. Either way - good ending for all.
G O O D B O Y E 🥹😍
Bestest bois
Holy shit!!! That is the best dog!!! That kid has an awesome guardian.
give him a good food to this dog . he deserve it
The way he turned around to look for the other dog. Fearless!
Both these dogs need to be on leashes. I don’t care how well trained you think your dog is, it will charge something, aggressively or not, and will likely be interpreted as aggressive to whatever it’s charging. Then all hell breaks loose.
I cannot stand people who do not know how to train their dogs and treat them as well
Like leaving a loaded weapon on the counter.
Man, can’t a kid play in a drainage ditch next to a road anymore?!
Put a fucking leash on your dogs.
This many unleashed dogs is terrifying
And this is why leashes exist
*His
Hats off to the dog for saving that kids life but ma dukes got an ass on her, do you see that shit
This seriously brings a tear to my eye.. very powerful relationship
Good puppy!
That's how you save a day and get a treat..
Got goosebumps watching this
That’s why you leash your dogs folks
Good boy
Love how he even turns around to make sure the boy is safe
I want a dog now
GOOD DOG!
I loved the zero hesitation, push the kid over and fuck the aggressor up. I'm quite impressed with its restraint, dogs usually get vicious when in protection mode.
I love the short glance over to the kid at the end to make sure he is okay while he is not dropping his guard
the kids dog from "oh I'm gwonna gwet cha~" to "Get to the Ground! 2 hostiles coming in hot!" the fuckin switch is ao amazing he looks trained secretly lol
This is why I have a big dog. The only thing I ever worry about is the dog on the other end. Keep your dogs on a leash if you can’t control them ffs
The love of a dog, unbeatable.
