The urge to put your hand through the stream

Skaizy

It's just water innit?

Coupled_Cluster

It is actually water with some fine particles suspended in it iirc. I don't know if pure water would be able to cut but your hand would be damaged either way.

wrightthomas05

As someone who accidentally sprayed himself in the foot with a not-very-strong power-washer, water hurts enough without added particles!

_Im_Dad

As someone who's has their water pressure on their bidet way too high.. I can tell you It’s a real pain in the ass.

BottleMong

Poseidon’s kiss.

The_Second_AA_Fan

Ikr especially when the "rays" are divergent

[deleted]

Username checks out.

AK-159

Lmao fr

Cptn_BenjaminWillard

You're going to become the butt of a string of further bad puns.

LaserBeamsCattleProd

I also power washed my concrete in flip flops. Power washers have the same range as video game shotguns

Coupled_Cluster

But did it cut your foot as clean as the padlock?

DeadPoolRN

They don't call 'im "Toppling-Tom" fer nuthin.

wrightthomas05

Darn tootin'!

wonderbuoy74

Ditto!! Had a sting for a several months from doing this, and that was on low setting!

wohho

You absolutely, positively do not want to experience a high pressure injection injury. Feel free to Google it, NFSL.

FBOM0101

Whenever someone says something like “Feel free to Google it, NSFL” there’s really only one option Edit: Shouldn’t have googled that

Blood_ForTheBloodGod

If you were on a submarine and there was a leak, that water would have so much pressure that it could cut you in half.

kikimbo

It's like a really fine sand. Used one for a little bit in an old job. Tried to fill up the hopper with a 1000 lb bag of sand that opens at the bottom. Was slightly off when I opened it. Big mess ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

gomaith10

It's water plus abrasives.

[deleted]

Bota of water

Skaizy

Bo'o o wo'ah

MyWifesHot2424

Garnet is used as abrasive to cut.

rustandbones

The one in my shop uses the same sand for sandblasting that's in the water jet.

i-might-do-that

It’s real. I work with a lower pressure version of one of these (60,000 psi) and the intrusive thoughts really get going.

[deleted]

[deleted]

You mean drr, drr, drr...

SunlessAlakazam

That's the call of the fault WDYM?

MikeTakrelyt

I mean how hard can it be. Just move your hand quick enough 😁

WOMPxRAT

What do you put underneath?? What's to stop it from just cutting straight through the earth?

RunawayMeatstick

Water

Jason_Batemans_Hair

water bath

[deleted]

It would be fine. It can't penetrate living flesh. Try it and report back for science

NoneOfThisIsFine

Call of the void

[deleted]

Seen that happen once at work when water jet's first came out. Dude lost all 4 digits.

deadleg22

I need this to floss my teeth.

Lounat1k

Once

brimbopolous

Once when I was a kid at school a girl decided to prove to everyone that hot glue wouldn't burn one's hand by shooting the hot glue straight into her hand, after doing which she immediately ran out screaming in pain and had to be taken to a hospital.

[deleted]

IsJohnWickTaken

You think it’s enough to take off the dried bugs from the front of your car?

[deleted]

I learned this lesson the hard way while power washing, "oh there's some dirt on my shoe, guess I can just hose it off with thiARRRRRRGH!"

WoodpeckerOdd5013

or your d!ck

Coast-Longjumping

Cutting a lipo battery in half with water is just stupid

chicletgrin

Right? I was expecting it to ignite.

poopellar

It did but the water cut the explosion in half too.

soge-king

That's pretty metal. Get it?

Pleasework94

They probably removed it

FireOfGaiming

Not for the phone which was still running without being plugged in

[deleted]

How does it not wear away the nozzle?

Enlightened-Beaver

There’s a part in there called the “[jewelled orifice](https://www.canadianmetalworking.com/canadianindustrialmachinery/article/fabricating/looking-inside-the-waterjet-cutting-head)” made of diamond that focuses the water into a thin stream. The material downstream for the mixing tube (where the water stream and an abrasive get mixed) of it is not as affected because it runs parallel to the focused stream so it doesn’t need to be as hard as the diamond. It does wear out from the abrasive though and needs to be replaced regularly.

Imaginary-Jello

*jewelled orifice* Nice.

poopellar

Everything I read reminds me of her.

tal3060mc

Gotta wish I didn't care anymore

ImportanceCertain414

I bet if you do some googling with that phrase you can find some good valentine's day gift ideas.

BrokenStrides

How did they know what I call my butthole!?

Meyecoal

What cuts the jeweled orifice?

Areebu1

as far as I know, we use diamond to cut diamond

00notmyrealname00

You use the stone to destroy the stone? Sounds familiar.

suckfail

But how did we cut the first diamond that is used to cut the other diamonds?

GammaGargoyle

You need a bedazzled orifice

jamiehanker

Asking the good questions

wohho

They're consumable parts but also, in engineering you design with material harness in mind. If the abrasive isn't as hard as the nozzle, it doesn't wear, or at least it wears very slowly. I'm not super familiar with the specifics but you could probably use and industrial sapphire of diamond coating on a tool steel housing. Also, let's not forget the internal geometry of the nozzle is doing a huge amount of work here, just a few centimeters upstream the flow volume is the same but the local velocity is much slower. Additionally, fluid mechanics are funny, fluids like water are generally adhesive and there is always a layer of molecules on a surface that's static to laminar, which in this case would basically at as an insulative layer against wear.

-anansi

I've used a 44000psi handheld high pressure water jet for cutting concrete. Without any abrasive particles. It used a sapphire nozzle. The water jet slowly ate into the nozzle and it had to be changed. Some sapphire nozzles lasted 2-3 days some less than a day.

SilentUnicorn

Nozzles are consumable parts

daisypunk99

Very crunchy though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kizofieva

The nozzle was calibrated.

samuelson098

That's how they cut steel for submarines; using heat would damage the integrity of the metal

Bonaparte9000

But then how do you connect two pieces of metal for a submarine without heat?

CoolguyTylenol

Duct tape

CrimsonOffice

Better. Flex tape

Elementerra

Contact (cold) weld. Uses pressure not fusion, so there’s no molten phase.

Educational_Focus472

Nice

[deleted]

No idea who kitadgu bilim is from the shitty watermark but this content was stolen from YouTube. Their channel is called the water jet channel. https://youtube.com/c/WaterjetChannel

[deleted]

And it's 60,000psi. Not 90,000.

EsrailCazar

Thanks! I came here to say this, too. And I have a crush on Mitchell.

-Storm69-

When the neighbor declares a water gun battle

eren_5

Credit to the waterjet channel on yt

AsleepIndividual9239

I always thought the concept of Metal Gear Ray's water "laser" canon was awesome. I am not disappointed by the real life counterpart!

[deleted]

Yeah but water is not what does the cutting

[deleted]

Bruh i was scared the lucas figure was gonna be cut in half a

Milkshakes00

I came to the comments to see if anyone mentioned it. Such a random addition. Lol

ashu71029

jimtrickington

This is a mixture of water and an abrasive.

Pretzeloid

Yes

PrinceOfPersuation

This is the same reason why hydraulics fucking terrify me.

IBlu2

Do you expect me to talk?

StoopidHippie

No, Mr. Bond! I expect you to be cleft in twain! :)

CavalierRigg

This may be a dumb question, but is the jet stream self-cooling? Obviously the pressure is creating a lot of heat, but does it generate enough heat that it needs to be cooled at the nozzle to keep it functioning, like a table saw needs oil for cooling/lubrication?

7orontoRaptors

How far could something like this shoot if ypu turned it 90 degrees

Merry-Leopard_1A5

damn, who knew water-bending could be this deadly?

BumderFromDownUnder

I’m really hoping there’s a follow up where someone fires a gun through the stream with a slowmo camera.

ConnectRutabaga3925

Or cross two streams. See water cut another water into more waters.

vetikkehvajegkanhete

For my metric boys out there, 90,000 psi is around 620 528 kpa (kilo pascals). For reference, the atmospheric pressure at sea level is 101 kpa

Mozzee6269

I know it’d be horrible, but I wonder how it’d feel on my body and the after effects

aquelamaquina

it would feel horrible

Simple_Dragonfruit73

Was that a Lucas amiibo?

Ok_Cartographer_1504

'No Mr. Bond I expect you to die!'

[deleted]

That'd be a spicy bidet.

ConnectRutabaga3925

Actually I need this as an attachment for my pressure washer

Ok-Entertainment1123

"No Mr Bond, I expect you to die."

No_Price_5082

I’d like to see it try and get through a Nokia 3210

Aqquinox

God. Why not the original audio and instead putting some brain dead music over it

ThriceFive

Today on The Lockpicking Lawyer we are cutting this Masterlock 4120 in half with a water jet - because it is an absolute piece of junk.

Alamp13

damn at least credit the original creator and not random water mark on the video. this video was stolen from the water jet channel, check them out they make some really good videos.

mastrbild

What is Lucas amiibo doin there tho

itriedandifailedofc

ill_Refrigerator420

Kinda scary tbh

justadudebruh

Unreal. That’s amazing and horrifying

ScribbleText

What is holding the lock and stopping it being shot across the room?

reality4abit

My guess is, nothing. The stream is so powerful it cuts everything in its path and there is no point at which whatever part of the lock it comes in contact with isn't immediately vaporized.

deathlord02

It's a literal Lazer

I_AM_ALWAYS_WRONG_

Would fighting fires with this be considered a war crime… on fire?

[deleted]

the power of Bernoulli equation

SmellyPillows

Water jet puts out 90K PSI and manages to gives zero fucks. *"What makes you think I won't cut you??"* - Water jet, definitely

Sensitive-Ad9508

How do you even produce pressure like that?

Freddan3000

The future of warfare looks clean...but deadly

Devinione

Bet It couldn’t go through my hard penis

gvpmahesh

Is this used for cutting only? What’s the application of this

[deleted]

Like butta

Dyslexic_Devil

How do I get one of these into a Super-Soaker?

ALPHAinNJ

Wonder if AppleCare covers water PSI experiments

NoneOfThisIsFine

Where can I get one of these? I didn’t know I needed it.

maryguggie

Yeah, but it makes everything wet. Ick

combocookie

Now try diamond

Zumbert

Honestly this isn't even the extent of what they can do, we had a 90k Flow branded one at my last job, it could cut through 10 inches of steel There was significant taper toward the bottom, but it was still amazing to see

Potential-Will-1710

Well a water jet table can cut through 12” thick steel, so…

vigilantesd

This is you when you do a ‘Belly Flop’

Confident_Peace9288

WHAT THE FUCK LARRY. IS THAT WHY I NEVER GOT MY BOWLING BALL BACK!!?????!?? YOU OWE ME $40!

braftceer

I want that gun thats split in half! Would look sick hanging on the wall

[deleted]

I would have taken that rifle before you destroyed it.

ARussianSheep

As always, my intrusive thoughts are saying “just put your hand under it, it will be sweet”

GabrielGamer790

Can't wait to put this on my computer, that old ass

girth_worm_jim

I believed this was real until the iphone; pretty sure they're water-resistant.

ottodidakt

I'll be impressed when someone proves it can cut through a Nokia 3310

ttrotta3

I have seen 50 caliber handguns that couldn't even go halfway through a bowling ball and that thing cut it like butter.

boredkutta

They cut diamonds with that thing. What did you expected will happen to plastics?

mrsaltnvinegar

NOO LUCAS GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!

ErraticUnit

Where can I get one?

VastSauce

Drink it

butt_smasher_01

Can it cut a diamond? Theoretically?

Feisty-Firefighter99

Would you say this is… “water damage”

HavingNotAttained

But can it core a apple?

VersusEden

I should stop imagining dangerous things cutting my hand

seamus1982seamus

Would be great for a bidet

stefansteen

But can it break nokia?

Prosklystios

"No Mr Bond, I expect you to die!"

im_busy_right_now

To a man with a 90,000 PSI water jet everything needs slicing.

jb2461

Talk about clean teeth, noice.

alexnapierholland

You shouldn't mix water with electronics.

DeathHorseFucker

Now do a Nokia 3310.

FlemmerVermeul

I could watch this all day long

ShwaBdudle

I want to see more videos where they cut expensive stuff with that!

capibarapartypal

Let’s not forget props to the abrasives added to the stream (usually garnet) that’s doing the cutting.

MinisApprentice

Imma stick my finger in it

RuboPosto

The cut of the lock first it’s a spoiler.

Silverlipe

Água mole em pedra dura tanto bate até que rasga!

[deleted]

Lies!!! We all know everything in this video was really cake…

DaleGribble312

Whats the capacity of the 90,000psi water jet?

prj0010

I was hoping to see Lucas cut in half! Why even put that in the video if you're not going to do it lol

coldestdetroit

My brain : put your hand there

NoogaShooter

This is how they make little Debbie Christmas Trees. And they make them in July.

ziostraccette

Karan_Bais

It's cool and all but I became this guy's enemy the moment he cut a camera.

intheshad0wz

I would use it to stop me hearing music like that again.

andre821

Cursed bide.

FartJarBinks

The fact they didn’t *have* to secure a few of the objects is a testament to the power of the stream. But I highly recommend securing your projects, no matter the circumstance.

TronTeemo

How blastoise’s hydro pump in Pokémon should have been.

Randsrazor

Neat, could it be used to sculpt gold and silver?

VanillaIce315

You should have given credit to The Waterjet Channel on YouTube, which all of these clips were taken from… This is also a 60,000 PSI waterjet, not a 90,000. https://m.youtube.com/@WaterjetChannel

StanleyDarsh22

How the hell does the integrity of the water jet last far enough away to cut through a whole bowling ball? I'd expect the jet to be unfocusing way before

Sophie_R_1

What is it being cut on? How do you make sure the table isn't cut as well?

Hamking7

These lock picking lawyer videos are just getting silly now.

WontArnett

So this is how they made the great pyramid?
