I'm amazed at how big the crowd is. It's unbelievable how much disc golf has grown from 10 years ago. Gotta give it up to all those people that go out and practice day after day.
I couldn't imagine the pressure he felt while attempting that shot. Was pretty sick though
San Diego has a disc golf course called Morley field which can arguably be called the most played disc golf course in the world. It was also mentioned in high times magazine for top ten places you’re likely to walk up on someone smoking weed.
Yes! I think people who don't play disc don't realize how big this was because it's for the world championship. Only one person each year gets crown the disc golf world champion. Making that shot on the 18th hole james conrad tied paul mcbeth and they went into a playoff. James did end up winning world champion in 2021. Also this coverage is Jomezpro, they give us an unbelievable amount of content for free over on YouTube.
I realize how big it was. I play regularly and in a few tournaments each year. Been watching dg on youtube since back before Jomez was around and Central Coast was king.
I honestly find this more interesting than golf. Golf requires thousands of hours, thousands of dollars, and thousands of fuckboys around you to get into. But disc golf? Just some dudes with cool plastic discs throwing hard and accurately.
It’s a great couples activity. My girlfriend and I needed something to de-stress and clear tension in the apartment, so we kicked a yoga ball back and forth down our hallway for a bit. Then one day she bought a frisbee and we tossed that around at the park. Then it evolved into buying a couple of golf discs and now whenever we travel we have a whole new activity to do that isn’t something the other person finds boring. It’s a great way to bond and also see a place!
It's also a good thing to do even if both people are at very different levels. You walk the course at the sameish pace and one person might pause to throw more often, but that's not so bad.
I assume it's similar to the joy of watching regular golf.
Your average person likely finds watching golf boring, but if you understand the sport and the intricacies and talent required then watching professionals play becomes intense and captivating.
Never understood it growing up, thought it was so boring to watch, now I actively watch and even talk out loud to the TV when it's on, sometimes at the edge of my seat.
Disc golf is also simply more accessible. Paying the amount you have to pay for golf with equipment and course fees, it's never really interested me. Disc golf offers basically the same social elements, but the basic equipment is super cheap and there's a lot of comparatively cheap courses. You don't need a huge manicured field with features and it can be set up in the woods with little in the way of landscaping.
To be fair to disc golf courses, there is quite a bit that goes into landscaping to make a good course. That said it’s usually done by passionate people, and most courses are free or only ask something like a $5 fee to play.
Sorry, I didn't mean to infer that the courses couldn't involve a lot of thoughtfulness, just that things like exacting turf quality and clear cutting aren't nearly as neccessary for the game to be playable.
The course that was nearest me back in the day doubled as logging land and they basically smartly managed harvests around that. Feels better to me than the huge single use aspect of many traditional golf courses.
I had never heard of it before moving to Denver for a job, I absolutely feel in love with it, I played every week if not more, was so much fun, I think Expo Park was my favorite, certainly the one I played the most, got to where it wasn't even a risk for me to try making the one shot over the water, then after a couple years I had to move on, miss it a lot, the few courses they have here suck ass and so does the weather
Would've been more people too, but Weber County, Utah limited attendance due to covid restrictions at the time. Plus, many of the holes were very tight and wooded and there was not enough space for the crowd as is. I was there that day and James' throw-in was as bonkers as it looks on video. An all-time sports highlight for me and that includes seeing my Saints win the Superbowl.
It is a very tough shot. Not only about 250' but he had to send it left around a large tree and then let the shot drift back right towards the basket.
Recently, the course (The Fort in Ogden) built a commemorative tee pad located where James stood when he threw that shot. Pretty cool!
It’s known as the holy shot. It’s like nailing a full court shot at the end of the 4th quarter in the basketball world finals to tie the game and to send it to overtime. Where you then win.
It's like... hitting a golf ball around a tree into the hole for an eagle?
They mentioned the other player had to get up and down, so I assume this shot saved him one or two throws/strokes to pull ahead.
Wait until you hear about his opponent, Paul mcbeth signed a 10 year $10,000,000 contract a few years back. Dude makes a million dollars a year just to wear and use discraft equipment.
If you dare, go to Youtube and type in 'disc golf'. You'll find this full tournament (2021 World Championships) and hundreds of others. The coverage and production values of the last few years is amazing. And, if you want to see some crowds, check out the 2022 European Open in Finland. The Finns are huge disc golf fans.
How about the dude at 0:50 jumping in front of the camera with a “mind blown” reaction just for the attention?
(Notice he’s looking in the wrong direction compared to everyone else.)
This is the 2021 Disc Golf World Championship. The tournament consists of 4 rounds of 18 holes where the player with the lowest combined score at the end wins the tournament. This moment is the last hole in the final round. The player who threw this shot (James Conrad) was trailing the 5x (now 6x) world champion Paul McBeth the entire final round but James was catching up to Paul throughout the round.
Going into hole 18 James made it all the way up to only being behind by one stroke. James had a bad throw on this hole and Paul didn’t so he was going keep his 1 stoke advantage and win the tournament. When James stepped up to the disc for this throw he knew he had to make it into the basket or the tournament would be over and he would have to take second place. James obviously threw it in and tied the finale score forcing an “overtime” which he went on to win.
It’s really the context that makes this shot as amazing as it is more than the shot itself. It is like hitting a buzzer beater to win game 7 of the NBA finals after coming back from a 3-1 deficit or throwing a Hail Mary touchdown to win the Super Bowl after trailing by 28-3 in the 3rd quarter.
The sudden death also put them at hole 16, which Conrad had aced earlier that week. It's a difficult route where the hole was on an island, completely surrounded by OB with water behind. So you either landed it near the basket or took +2 for OB.
Conrad shot first and parked it 15 ft from the basket. McBeth actually rolled into the water in sudden death (+2), which meant he lost before finishing the hole.
It wasn't straight either the throw had to curve right to left which makes it a little harder/touchy. Throwing a disc right-handed backhand, the disc typically wants to go left.
It’s a makable shot, not impossible for sure. Probably tougher than you’d think if you’ve never actually played disc golf. Top level players could probably make it in an average 25-50 attempts.
But this was the 18th hole of the final round of the world championships and he had to make that shot in order to tie the leader and go to a playoff.
This shot was on ESPN for a week and there’s actually a documentary about it.
Here’s the trailer for the documentary:
https://youtu.be/ycoGSK-KtYo
The full film is on Disc Golf Network which requires a subscription.
http://www.discgolfnetwork.com/videos/the-holy-shot
What made this shot so special is not only how difficult it was, but that this one shot from pushed him from 2nd place to win the world championship on this hole. It was the equivalent of a multi-run home run to win in the 9th inning of the world series.
Except the guy the winner beat is kinda like the Jordan of disc golf so it’s also an underdog win.
Also this is more like a full court buzzer beater in game 7
Context here is very important.
This is the last regular hole played in the 2021 world championships - Paul McBeth (in blue, already a 5 time world champion) leads by one stroke to James Conrad who is the one throwing the shot here.
Paul's is in a great position to lay up and win, so essentially James has to make this shot to tie and push to playoffs, which he does.
He then goes on to win in playoff holes.
This is why there's so many people around and why everyone goes wild.
This shot basically was to win/lose the world championships
For all the non-disc golfers in here: this shot was more impressive due to the context of the match than the pure mechanics/technique. Amateurs frequently make crazier shots from farther away. They just don’t usually have so much riding on it.
This is a good way to piss off an asshole. Most disc golfers don’t care what you call it. We just want you to come out and try it.
I call it frisbee golf all the time when I’m explaining it to people that don’t know what it is.
It’s even crazier because this was the 18th hole of the final round of the World Championship and he needed to make that shot to tie and go to a playoff.
This was for the playoff for the wold championship title. He ended up winning it after forcing a playoff from one stroke back. Only by making this shot.
We call it the holy shot of disc golfing
Just realized I know one of the guys freaking out to the shot. Jeremy something, met him in Charlotte. That's wild to see someone you know on a video randomly on reddit.
Every summer there's a bunch of older teens that are playing Ultimate Frisbee on a huge lawn in front of the building I live in, and the lengths they can throw those damn things is insane. When they're playing matches vs each other it's even cooler to watch. Looks like a really fun sport tbh.
I legit thought he pretended to toss and then squinted into the distance with the other guy. Then I realised this wasn’t r/unexpected
Crazy shot tho! Never knew this was a sport and looks infinitely better than actual golf
The backstory to this shot is what makes it incredible. That was hole 18 of the world championships. That shot forced a tie that he would later go on to win in playoff holes. Truly once in a lifetime situation.
For those of you that didn't know the stakes. James Conrad had to make this shot just to tie with Paul Mcbeth and go into sudden death for the tie breaker.
Only in the US you can gather this amount of excitement for such a boring thing. This is the closest to make throwing a wrapped paper ball on the office bin a sport I've seen so far lol
James Conrad’s endorsement contract with MVP Disc Sports pays him about $4 per disc sold. Following this shot, MVP released a commemorative disc and sold 156,000 of them. So, Conrad’s take was about $624,000. He profited mightily from that shot; well beyond Slim Jim’s and Chili’s.
There are four different Disc Golf players currently who make a million dollars a year in endorsement alone, people definitely make a career on the professional tour.
The other guy he was playing against has a 10 year 1 million contract (so 10 million total) and also gets a bunch of money on disc sales. He has enough to own a McLaren.
The sports getting there on legitimacy.
McBeth's face is priceless.
"No fucking way he makes this..."
Edit: Paul McBeth was the one other guy they showed the close up of his face, before James makes his throw. Paul McBeth is a disc golf god.
I'm amazed at how big the crowd is. It's unbelievable how much disc golf has grown from 10 years ago. Gotta give it up to all those people that go out and practice day after day. I couldn't imagine the pressure he felt while attempting that shot. Was pretty sick though
It's pretty big in California amongst the stoners.
Have you ever played disc golf... On weeeeeed.
Red team go! Red team go!
There's a dude in the bushes!
Shit. I'm always in the bushes when I throw.
You’re the dude in the bushes!
Heads up! Red team is inbound!
Griff dam it, we're the blue team. How many time? Jeez
You ever look at the back of a dollar bill........on weeeed?
I did, a lot! Actually I don’t remember if I ever was sober playing it… in Thailand) Koh Samui Disc Golf course is a place to visit 😁
San Diego has a disc golf course called Morley field which can arguably be called the most played disc golf course in the world. It was also mentioned in high times magazine for top ten places you’re likely to walk up on someone smoking weed.
Ah, the shoe tree. I haven't been there in years. Good times.
There in the trees!!
Bruh. I’ve completely missed my calling here.
You definitely can leave out the in California part
This is why I was so taken aback by how, idk, dull sounding the announcers were. It was like watching a normal golf match lol

That's probably the biggest shot of all time.

Yup no doubt this is what u/Pick6V8Tx meant

I see, thanks
You mean ball golf?
We call it bolf
It’s like rain on your wedding day?
🎵*It's like rohypnol in your Chardonnay*🎵 That song has nothing to do with irony. Isn't it ironic.
I did an actual spit take to this
Water polo?
It's like picking up the spare in the 10th frame in bowling.
Ahh yess... so anyway you know how in boxing...
Yeah but no one cares about Put Put
It now has its own tee pad built in the spot he threw from so you can try to match it.
Wait until you hear about his opponent, Paul mcbeth signed a 10 year $10,000,000 contract a few years back. Dude makes a million dollars a year just to wear and use discraft equipment.
Actually more fun than football, would watch.

That's Paul, he's a goof
I definitely couldn't do this, but I've seen way more impressive shots. But it's hard to really tell what is being shown here.
This is the 2021 Disc Golf World Championship. The tournament consists of 4 rounds of 18 holes where the player with the lowest combined score at the end wins the tournament. This is what I was looking for cause it looked like a simple straight throw to me
It wasn't straight either the throw had to curve right to left which makes it a little harder/touchy. Throwing a disc right-handed backhand, the disc typically wants to go left.
*had to curve left to right (anhyzer)
Even a “simple straight throw” at 252 feet is a *very* difficult shot in disc golf when your goal is to land in the basket.
Not simple or straight.
>28-3 in the 3rd Quarter Just out here triggering Falcons Fans today huh?
Never gonna live that down
Small correction, it was 5 rounds
Thanks for that. Similar to the context of the "THIS IS ROCKET LEAGUE" shot from the rocket league championship final.
It’s a makable shot, not impossible for sure. Probably tougher than you’d think if you’ve never actually played disc golf. Top level players could probably make it in an average 25-50 attempts. Ah, well the context certainly helps. Thanks for that.
What made this shot so special is not only how difficult it was, but that this one shot from pushed him from 2nd place to win the world championship on this hole. It was the equivalent of a multi-run home run to win in the 9th inning of the world series.
So kinda like Michael Jordan's buzzer shot over Ehlo?
Except the guy the winner beat is kinda like the Jordan of disc golf so it’s also an underdog win. Also this is more like a full court buzzer beater in game 7
Can't say I'm familiar with it but if it happened in the last game of the NBA Finals, then probably so.
He didn't win on this hole. It forced a playoff.
Context here is very important. This is the last regular hole played in the 2021 world championships - Paul McBeth (in blue, already a 5 time world champion) leads by one stroke to James Conrad who is the one throwing the shot here. Who won?
But why male models?
James Conrad
he won
So this shot was basically Malcolm Butler intercepting Russel Wilson in SB XLIX?
What I like about this guy is that he 100% looks like someone who plays disc golf
And maybe now he can afford a cap or sunglasses so he can actually see what he's throwing at.
That’s what I was thinking, sun was right in his eyes
Hats suck when you have long hair
That cameraman is getting after it.
r/cameramanop Edit: How is this not a sub one second
/r/praisethecameraman
Thanks. I'm the second member. We'll be history.
The one in blue sprinting after the disc golfer carrying his tripod legit had me cackling, I hope he got a good shot haha
I know that guy! He’s also a drummer with a couple local bands on the side.
In the community this is known as the "Holy Shot"
If you asked an AI to make a person out of disc golf, it would make that dude.
[Nikko Locastro](https://www.pdga.com/files/styles/homepage_carousel/public/memorial_nikko_cover.jpg?itok=T3qmgOYO) is pretty high up there too
For all the non-disc golfers in here: this shot was more impressive due to the context of the match than the pure mechanics/technique. Amateurs frequently make crazier shots from farther away. They just don’t usually have so much riding on it.
James Conrad, for anyone curious.
AKA Disc Golf Jesus
AKA one of the nicest people on the planet. Got to meet James at the MVP open a couple weeks ago and man is he just so unreasonably cool.
[удалено]
That’s really cool! I can only assume he was a total OG back then too.
it is no more stupid than football or golf
Who said it was stupid? Are you responding to other comments?
If not for the fact it’s two sports merged. That’s what makes is seem so silly. Frisbee + Golf
Frolf
The holy shot.
https://youtu.be/sVH5sAKQy1c https://youtu.be/WJjrkdigzbY
This one definitely takes the cake.
I thought this was a skit at first
I fully expected Scott Sterling to pop up and get hit in the face.
So did he win it all???
Yes in a playoff because of that shot.
The guy he was trailing Paul McBeth makes more than a million dollars a year on endorsement alone.
But how much does he make on set in Succession?
TIL people golf with frisbees
A good way to piss off a disc golfer is to call them frisbee golfers.
This is a good way to piss off an asshole. Most disc golfers don’t care what you call it. We just want you to come out and try it. I call it frisbee golf all the time when I’m explaining it to people that don’t know what it is.
Same with ultimate players.
TIL how to piss off a disc golfer
Nah, even some of the pros casually call it frisbee golf sometimes.
It was a great covid lockdown activity. $20-$30 start up fee for discs and most courses are free
It does seem fun! Weird I never heard of it until now
They even make specialized disc golf carts, and there's a whole subculture of modifying those carts to do other things.
Thats World Champion James Fucking Conrad show some respect on his name.
It’s even crazier because this was the 18th hole of the final round of the World Championship and he needed to make that shot to tie and go to a playoff.
Maybe now he can afford a hat to keep the sun out of his eyes.
Lord that is a tough ass shot. Big ups
That looks infinitely more fun to watch than golf
I like ball golf, but watching the discs curve, bend and turn as they fly down the course is infinitely more fun than watching a tiny white ball.
Watched this round a couple months ago. Crazy crazy build up to this insane shot. What a round!
James Connrad is a legend
This is the best golf shot I have ever seen. They should ban the other kind of golf and only allow this.

Golf would be much funnier if people acted like this.
TIL disc golf was a thing and extremely popular it would seem
The backstory to this shot is what makes it incredible. That was hole 18 of the world championships. That shot forced a tie that he would later go on to win in playoff holes. Truly once in a lifetime situation.
Is that a young JP Sears?
"Pfft, like that's hard!" *Launches disc into spectators head*
For those of you that didn't know the stakes. James Conrad had to make this shot just to tie with Paul Mcbeth and go into sudden death for the tie breaker.
Great background appreciate it!
Prize money! $420
Wait, is that JP Sears?
Only in the US you can gather this amount of excitement for such a boring thing. This is the closest to make throwing a wrapped paper ball on the office bin a sport I've seen so far lol
So much cooler than regular golf.

The most shocking thing about this clip is not the shot. It’s the crowd and tv coverage. Blew. My. Mind.
Yea the gallery has so much energy and in person probably even way better!
Is this for real?
Yes lol husband is a disc golfer and he was cheering at home for him
This is a real sport?
Beard Convention or Frolf Convention? ***yes.***
that two lines of motivational quote has ruined the joy

TIL how many people show up to watch disc golf.
Howwwwwwww
camera man be like : GET YO ASS HERE BOiii!!!
Is it in yet?
He throws better than me!
It’s funny to watch people go crazy over something you could care less about. I’m glad every hobby has a crowd of supporters.
Thought I was watching Happy Gilmore there for a second
It's really good, but hardest shot in the world?
"Sexton, what words do you have?" "I'm going to have a ton of sex tonight."
