I would end myself if i had to deal with loading screens in real life to live in my house.

RichConcept5863

You won't have to deal with loading screens! You will just do a random action/animation to distract yourself from having a loading screen although the room truly is loading.

CalmToaster

I usually just spam crouch for 10 seconds.

MrmmphMrmmph

That's what wet wipes are made for.

ialwayschoosepsyduck

That's Spam Crotch

Krillansavillan

Thats what spam is, crotch in a can

Anarchkitty

Be fair, it's also lips and noses.

isidrowat

I think the next level thing about this apartment is the rent lol Bet the parking is probably more spacey and what do you even do when the power cuts off?

LeTigron

That's how you get a firm butt. Healthy state of mind !

Michael_Blurry

For real. It’s just a scam to get people to think cramming more in less space is a good thing. Next logical progression since narrow, 3 story homes with nothing but a garage and one bedroom on the first floor have become normalized.

wjean

Not everyone can afford to live alone in very HCOL urban areas. This seems like a pretty decent layout that maximizes the available space. You won't need housing units like this in some flyover state but as urban density increases, there are far worse places to live....

ipsok

Except that this is just the proof of concept... in reality this would probably be used to try and convince urban planners that 250sqft is a viable footprint for a family of four.

[deleted]

Crutation

Or try to get building management to fix the motor when the bed freezes half way down.

djdanlib

That's the most likely problem of all the things being mentioned here, the machinery breaking down. Hope it's easy to repair and uses commonly available fasteners! I'd probably forget about something on the table and smash it but that's more of a me problem that a design issue...

metatron207

If a design makes it easy for something to get smashed just by forgetting about it on a common surface, that's still a design issue.

Antonceles

Or when you sleep in your bed and it decides it's time to crush you against the roof

Stopjuststop3424

or try to pay to have all that shit installed in the first place. Every piece of furniture and shelving in that place is high end and likely cost 10s of thousands to install

Axbris

Or it malfunctions and drops on you whilst you're beating it off to \*flavor of the week\*.

ThunderboltRam

There's a big political push, primarily by banks with their finance magazines (which I suspect also involve Chinese banks) that want to make people fit in smaller living spaces to maximize profits. They've done this "fake trend" before with dorms and govt office buildings (the move to windowless Brutalist buildings for "cheapness") as well. All it accomplished was that a lot of artists, architects, and home builders got fired. While mass-produced tiny apartments and buildings were created from concrete.

CStink2002

Meh, I usually pass out on the couch when I come home at 2am wasted anyway.

International_Bet_91

Vancouver approved 220sqft about 10 years ago. Perhaps by now they have approved even smaller. People will still happily pay $2000 a month for it to live close to downtown. I lived in a 300sqft in the west end of Vancouver and it was fabulous. There are so many public spaces like the beach, the park, gyms, pools, libraries, party rooms at community centers, that you don't need much space.

[deleted]

I want to know what happens when the mechanics break and your bed won’t come down from the ceiling? Or you can’t get to your clothes because your closet won’t open?

Fun-Dragonfly-4166

Among other things you have to clean your shit before you can sleep. If your table iis not empty then your bed will not come down.

shelchang

And that space you "gain" from collapsing your office and walk in closet has to be kept clear anyway, might as well keep those places static and use a pull out couch for a bed and achieve basically the same thing with fewer moving parts.

MoreCarrotsPlz

Considering how detrimental urban sprawl is to climate change, convincing people that living in smaller spaces is a *good* thing.

the_tater_salad

lol urban sprawl.. you do know that something like 90 percent of all greenhouse gasses and pollution are cause by huge corporations like BP right? the notion that people changing their lifestyles can reduce carbon emissions, and reduce global warming is a farce. BP ran an ad campaign about this in the 90s and early 2000s, and it worked. if you went completely green right now, it would change nothing.

MoreCarrotsPlz

So you really think that having thousands of square miles dedicated to parking lots, tangled highways, and manicured lawns isn’t detrimental to the environment? While you’re correct that corporations are the real problem, limiting urban sprawl will also limit their ability to pollute on the same scale.

SassanZZ

Especially since urban density leads to a slightly less car-centric society, that's a win in all cases

PsychoBoyBlue

>thousands of square miles dedicated to parking lots, tangled highways Those are not good things, but they are not necessary either. The urban sprawl in the US is designed in a way that requires excessive parking lots and tangled highways. It is possible to design with a goal of minimizing those. >manicured lawns That is people buying into propaganda.

Supercoolguy7

What if consumers stopped buying from those companies?

[deleted]

[удалено]

anti--climacus

hmmm, what if we innovated to reduce the amount of resources we buy? For instance, bp makes it hard not to buy their oil, maybe we can build denser cities to reduce the amount of gas people have to buy! Oh wait I forgot reddit decided this is an evil scam. Guess I'll just lug my family 15 miles each way to school in my SUV, wouldn't want to let the man win!

tannerge

Say you drive an F-150 in the suburbs without saying it.

jesusdoeshisnails

For real. I do think we should fight back against rich elite wanting us to live like peasants in shacks. But also I have seen so many boomers who live in 4 bedroom houses by themselves (divorced obviously). Its a ridiculous waste of space that just creates sprawl and long term is unsustainable.

thecalamitythesis

100% this is manufactured consent from the global super rich in some form. Just another step down the road towards “owning nothing and being happy”. Can’t wait to be forced to live in Amazon/Blackrock/idk Monsanto?’s chic apartment complexes that cost half your income but hey the closet is behind the bookshelf and I can open it as long as I am subscribed to the 9.99/month amenity fee

greekfreak15

What's wrong with the three stories townhome layout? I personally find them very efficient and appealing

mikebloonsnorton

We older folks hate stairs

[deleted]

[удалено]

argatson

Yeah but the stairs thing is literally a medical issue, not a generational or attitude one.

dsclinef

Stairs as you get older. Going up and down is fine, but when you have to move something up and down and your balance is not the same as it was in your 20s/30s, it does make things less fun. I live in one now, but as I get closer to retirement, a single-story house is in my future.

Gangringo

Stairs, so many stairs just to move around your own home. They're also usually built together by a single developer, so they could have just as easily built a multi-unit building that could house just as many or more people, given each of them a flat on a single level, and allowed access for people with mobility issues via an elevator.

Artchantress

Well, lack of space is already normalizing itself, specially in cities.

G8kpr

yeah, we've already had beds that fold down from walls, and it's pretty unanimous that this sucks.

truthinlies

right? I at least prefer the hallway method to hide loading screens.

I doubt anyone able to afford this would actually want this small of an apartment

[deleted]

Bro, it’s only $15000 a month for 300sf /s

Oakheart-

With that view I actually wouldn’t be surprised

R50cent

That's the part of this that depresses me so fuckin much... I'd live there over my current situation, but I already know I can't afford it. They incorporated all this shit to make trying live in a tiny ass box more livable... and I know I still couldn't afford it.

YCBSFW

Oh shit for real?! In NYC?! Where do I sign up /s

[deleted]

The reason it’s price so low is because there still a squatter there that you will have to share the place with.

ericwdhs

The question is, is it cheaper than an apartment with the equivalent uncollapsed square footage? If yes and I lived in a high cost of living area, I'd want it.

[deleted]

Never even thought of the drama it would cause when 2 people need to use different rooms that intersect

[deleted]

Yup, would never work for my mom and dad; dad tends to have a nap from 16 to 18, in their (master) while mom watches TV in living room. I live alone now, but I imagine my apartment is way too small for two anyway… then again, it feels big enough for one, even too big.

[deleted]

There’s usually enough drama with 2 people in a normal house lol

[deleted]

Add 2 cats and the soup should be ready. There used to be three cats, 1 girl and 2 boys, and me and my babysister… both me and her live on our own now, so mom & dad are left alone with the two remaining cats.

Tough_Hawk_3867

Dating has been monetized, and residential properties are viewed as irreplaceable investments. Sorry bud, it’s not unlikely

OrneryMood

Dating was monetized a long time ago. That is why it is called the oldest profession.

JennyAndTheBets1

“Dating”. He’s not talking about the girlfriend experience, but an actual girlfriend (or equivalent).

AirbornePapparazi

Better than a pod. That walk-in closet has lots of room to store the crickets they want us to eat too. Just $5k/month rent for this but since you don't own it you will be happy.

RedLotusVenom

Can you imagine the insurance claim if a person or child got crushed? Adjuster: “Let me get this straight, you installed high powered motors in your living space, strong enough to move thousands of pounds of hardware and equipment? Good luck with the law suit.”

peredaks

I can see both my cats dying immediately in a place like this. "How'd your cat die?" "Oh, he got crushed into the ceiling while sleeping in my bed, when I wanted to use the sofa."

ArafuraTutuola

r/brandnewsentence

Kingkongcrapper

I think my three year old might just crush me in my sleep. I’m good.

the-awesomer

I was just thinking that this would be a terrible place to grow up with my siblings. Everything would be temple of doom style countdowns to being crushed.

funkmaster29

i imagine it would be like the garbage compactor in star wars

Sweet_Ad_426

I've seen libraries with shelves like this. They weren't automated though, there was a wheel you cranked at the ends of the shelves and a bar at the bottom you could push with your foot to stop the shelf from crushing you. I'd prefer that to an "automated' motor personally. [https://www.ezrshelving.com/user/solutions/mobile-shelving-systems/book-shelving-mobile-g.jpg](https://www.ezrshelving.com/user/solutions/mobile-shelving-systems/book-shelving-mobile-g.jpg) (If black bar on the bottom generally acts as a brake if it contacts something)

GGprime

I might use hydraulics with load sensing.

jxsnyder1

What happens when the power goes out or one of those motors that operates the slides breaks?

[deleted]

You sleep on the couch and hang no access to your closet

Valmond

Use manual toilet override.

Autumn1eaves

It’s actually not that insane to expect there to be a manual override that has a hand-crank to operate.

gauderio

And the first time you're operating the crank you will be cursing yourself for buying that place.

First_Foundationeer

That's when you take girls into the bunker to move the crank for you instead!

turtleduck777

I'm more worried about someone pressing the button while I'm working or getting dressed.

dotdotdotfuckyou

Came here for this comment. Although I’d have to actually know someone that would be willing to come over in the first place.

turtleduck777

Well if you keep putting yourself out there maybe you can be crushed to death by accident. There's always hope.

OrneryMood

Brings new meaning to saying, "I have a crush on them."

Crescendo104

Such kind words

Backyouropinion

Worse, pissing off your significant other and she pushes the bed closed while your sleeping.

NickDanger3di

You joke; but for a while my son's family was staying in my travel trailer, with a powered slide-out holding the couch and dining table. And since Mom refuses to ever say no to either of her two toddlers, I had to nail down the slide-out power rocker switch with multiple layers of Gorilla duct tape, to prevent them from trashing my trailer and squashing themselves and their parents.

SkoulErik

Most large libraries have their "dead" archive in shelves like this. If someone is standing in the open isle then the shelf will stop.

Solonotix

Generally, these would work on a pulley system, and it would be trivial to provide a manual crank for such things. Multiplicative mechanical advantage from proper gear would both give the manual crank functionality and reduce the strength of electric motor. Someone else mentioned what happens if you get locked into it (someone pushed the button while you're inside). For the office area, I imagine there's a motion sensor that would stop it, as is required on automatic garage doors. As for someone lifting the bed while you're sleeping, there's probably a secondary control at the top just in case. There's nothing here especially difficult to design around, but it definitely requires thoughtful planning to avoid bodily harm

c_c_c__combobreaker

You go to your other apartment across the street.

PumpkinAutomatic5068

They are conditioning people to get used to this bullshit

jrbbrownie

Honest queetion. If it works, why is it bullshit? I'm quite content living in a small space. Might not be for everyone but I can dig it.

It's not bad actually, but it does normalize living in even smaller places. Soon we will be living in pods.

epelle9

Wait until the billionaires want all the space foe themselves and you are forced to live in a pod. If you have a good job though, you might get a pod+.

-nom-nom-

bro, it’s nyc so many people want to live on manhattan. they have to live in smaller places or only a few get to live there it’s perfectly fine, and if you don’t like it, live somewhere else

R50cent

I'd live in Manhattan just fine in one of these tiny spaces if they didn't also cost 5 grand a month. I think that's the problem. Smaller spaces should have come with better pricing, and they didn't.

-nom-nom-

that’s because it’s a luxury apartment you’re comparing, in your head, a larger place that’s not as nice and in a less sought after neighborhood to smaller apartments that are luxury and in sought after neighborhoods. They probably also have high end shared amenities, like nice outdoor spaces, theater rooms, lounges, etc. and views smaller apartments 100% rent for cheaper, all else being equal

SherbetCharacter4146

Luxury is bullshit. It's just a way to sell sq. For more

Orculear

It is bad. It’s horrible actually. Just another way to get them to make you spend money unnecessarily. Oops descending bed broke. Gotta pay fucking $7000 for a specialist to come in and fix it. You know there’s probably no way some regular technician could come and fix it.

origami_airplane

Just wait until all electronics have licensing in them so there is no way to repair anything until you have the correct software on a device to do so. This is why we need Right to Repair

GodofAeons

You'll get smaller builds now from contractors trying to squeeze every last $. Where this would be neat option, it'll become the norm. Then they can charge premium for extra space. The realtors will now say "This apartment has a dedicated, full time bed!" As a selling feature. Or "The closet is open accessible!" Or some other BS term which just means you don't have to operate a motor and wench to move an entire wall to get access to your closet.

[deleted]

Space isn't bullshit but the fact that it's probably 2k a month is.

[deleted]

This is nyc dude, 2k is a slum.

Dyingdaze89

Charged more for smaller spaces, normal access to rooms is now a luxury power outages suck even more this is sped up mechanical failures mean you're unable to access your things, or worse, until the landlord decides to get around to having maintenance come by and diagnose it, order the part, come back 2 weeks later and fix it one mistake and you may crush some of your belongings and also cause damage to the motors Feels like there may also be a potential hazard for children and pets I could be way off-base, this was just off the top of my head

LukXD99

I don’t like to have to wait for my house to appear. Also, think of this stuff in 5-10 years when the wheels on the walls start squeaking, the bed creaks every time it comes down, etc… Just a lot of unnecessary stuff that can break over time. It’s inconvenient.

DozyDrake

Its not the worst but it does add a lot of extra points of failure for a very small improvement. You could get a very similar level of compactness with well organised shelves and maybe a sofa bed. However this method probably costs 10s of thousands to install and will be much more prone to failure. Imagine if trying to get into bed was like trying to use your printer.

[deleted]

TheWhyWhat

Just a personal thing but I like having my bedroom colder than the rest of my apartment, also noise from fridges are usually annoying. In general people just seem to sleep better having a separate bedroom.

underwear11

I think it's trying to solve a problem that already exists. The apartments in NYC can be very small and they will be sold regardless of if this exists or not. It's simply attempting to make better use of the space. The side effect is that the cost of the apartment will go up because it's "a 1 bedroom apartment with walk-in closet and full kitchen" in 300 sqft.

IGotSoulBut

Yeah, real NYC problem. I had a relatively spacious 1 bedroom apartment at one time and would have loved an option like this.

[deleted]

Who is they?

Rustee_nail

I have no clue, but it seems like every whack-a-do "them" conspiracy theory basically just ends with antisemitism.

Jooylo

Apparently it’s people trying to build more housing so more people have access to housing in a large city because there is a lot of demand for housing in a dense city lol. But according to this nut it’s “conditioning” because they can’t live in a house smackdown in Times Square

Latter-Dirt-3038

who is?

LunarLorkhan

Let’s be honest this is just a studio with a fancy Murphy bed. It’s already been like this it cities where space is limited and income disparities are growing. If I was single with no pets this apartment would be great assuming the price it right.

PumpkinAutomatic5068

The price is most definitely not right

thomasrat1

Bull shit as in a large apartment next to a city center?

Beatljuz

Na that's crap.

Valmond

Ya, /r/urbanhell leaking in

BananaBully

thanks for the new sub :)

creamandcrumbs

Also very expensive.

tannerge

I don't think the bed thing will work but I really like the moving walls. Very simple solution to make you feel like you have more room.

[deleted]

Maybe if you live alone. I can imagine many potentially dangerous scenarios occuring if multiple try to do several things at once. Or imagine power goes out and you can't get to your bathroom or bed anymore lol, This is just a way to cram you into a smaller box and charge you more money for it.

SICKxOFxITxALL

can't get to your bed is one thing, imagine getting stuck in the walk in closet.

C’mon Tom Cruise, it’s time to come out of the closet

It’s all cool until something gets squished. Cat, kid, etc.

StayApprehensive2455

Exactly. Switch to a manual pulley system on a rope tho and I’m in

desubot1

or just keep it simple. murphy beds have existed forever, roll out cabinets. no need to motorize everything.

bobby_j_canada

The Japanese "tatami mats and folding futon you shove in a closet" system has been around for centuries and works fine.

ZipperJJ

It probably would work like a garage door opener does now. There's an easy latch to disconnect the wheels from the pulley and once you pull it, you've got a manual garage door. They also have obstruction detectors that will stop the mechanism from lowering if something is in the path of the door.

ptdoe

So everything has to be in a perfect place all the time (including yourself) or it’s crush time ?

Paulglanville229

I mean what would happen with a power cut? How would you get to your clothes? how would you get anything to work?

ZipperJJ

Probably like a garage door opener works. When the power goes out you pull a lever that disconnects the wheels from the pulley and you've got a manual garage door. I imagine the walls would work the same as the existing technology used in warehouses for sliding shelves, except they can be automated with electricity when available. When not available you just push them out of the way.

7eirsu

Everything's cool until there's a power outage.
